Third consecutive post with a starting pitcher update -- the Rattlers' Chris Mehring points out that Jake Odorizzi takes his normal turn as scheduled today -- looks like Hiram Burgos gets re-slotted later this week, probably in Monday's doubleheader.

Fortunately, RHP Michael Fiers is good to go after an early departure from his last start. He's your Huntsville TBD this afternoon.
Chris Cody is now listed as the starter in the box score. Fiers must have been a late scratch.

Final: Brevard County 6, @Fort Myers 3

Impressive Sea Cows as of late...

Brevard County Box Score

After a very lackluster first half, have to admit I didn't see 18-12 to start the 2nd half for this squad, basically the same group of players from the first half with minor tweaks; the Manatees scored two runs in each of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings, and five pitchers combined to get the job done here, prior to a day off Monday; looks like the Brewers are still taking it easy with R.J. Seidel, who would have qualified for the win with one more inning of work; lefties Brandon Richie and Daniel Meadows wrapped around an inning of work from Jeremy Jeffress, as the three kept the Miracle off the board from the 5th through the 8th -- Trey Watten wrapped it up, allowing one run in the 9th...

The top four in the Manatee lineup went only 2-for-14, but they added four walks and an HBP, and catcher Shawn Zarraga had a perfect day at the plate -- two singles, an HBP, and a sacrifice fly; Brock Kjeldgaard had the only extra-base hit among the nine Brevard safeties, as he was 2-for-4 with a double; Josh Prince is now 35-for-41 in SB attempts, three SB's here; all nine Manatees reached base at least once...

Brevard County Game Log

Only four of the 18 half-inning frames went 1-2-3, so the squads combined to make this an entertaining read; two huge defensive plays -- CF Juan Sanchez and Prince teamed up to throw out a Miracle runner out at home in the 3rd for the first out of the inning -- and RF Scott Krieger nailed a man at the plate to end the Fort Myers 4th; it's unfair to highlight Jeffress' inning only when several did their own good work, but we will anyway --

Fort Myers Bottom 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Jeremy Jeffress replaces Brandon Ritchie.
  • Angel Morales singles on a line drive to right fielder Scott Krieger.
  • Estarlin De Los Santos grounds out, pitcher Jeremy Jeffress to first baseman Sean Halton. Angel Morales to 2nd.
  • Brian Dozier flies out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Evan Bigley grounds out, third baseman Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton.

Cody went 6 1/3 innings giving up 1 run. Tied 1-1 going into the 8th.

Edit. Jax self-destructing in the 10th. 2 infield singles (so far) on throws that eluded 1B Vinnie Rottino. Vinnie with bad throw home on Gindl's grounder allows the leading run to score.

Edit2. 3 runs on 4 infield groundballs, a double steal by Lawrie and Gindl and a couple of wild throws to the plate. 4-1 going into the bottom of the 10th. I had to double check that the Stars were not playing the Timber Rattlers. Let's see if Henderson can finish this game.

Final: Wisconsin 7, @South Bend 1

Rattlers call down the thunder

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers turned in solid to special performances in their 7-1 win on Sunday over the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Wisconsin offense knocked out nine more hits, including two-run homers from Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris. The defense turned in their third error free game out of four in their current road trip with a couple of spectacular plays for good measure. Eric Arnett continued his resurgence with three scoreless innings for a save. And starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi topped it all.

Gennett started the scoring for Wisconsin (40-56 overall, 14-14 second half) with a long two-run homer to right-center with two outs in the top of the third inning.

Wisconsin tacked on three runs – with a little help from the Silver Hawks (40-55, 10-17) – in the top of the fourth inning. Khris Davis scored from third on a wild pitch. Morris scored from third on a passed ball. Michael Marseco knocked in Cutter Dykstra from third with a safety squeeze bunt and the Rattlers were up 5-0.

Odorizzi retired the first nine batters he faced. The final out of that streak came on an incredible diving catch by D’Vontrey Richardson in right-center. The Rattlers center fielder raced back on a ball hit by Ender Inciarte and laid out for the ball turned away from the infield to secure the third out of the third inning.

The streak ended when Odorizzi allowed a leadoff triple to Keon Broxton and an RBI double to David Nick to start the fourth inning. Then, the Rattlers starter retired the next three batters to allow the Wisconsin hitters a chance to extend the lead.

Davis started the two out rally in the fifth with a single. Morris followed with a home run to right and the Rattlers went up 7-1.

Odorizzi pitched seven innings, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out eight before turning the game over to the bullpen. The bullpen on Sunday was Arnett, who came in and tossed three scoreless innings to pick up his first Midwest League save. Arnett struck out a pair and made a play on a hot line drive hit back to him to end the game.

Wisconsin and South Bend will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one, a seven-inning contest, begins at 4:00pm CDT and features Nick Bucci (4-4, 3.63) as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers against Mike Belfiore (1-8, 3.93). The starting pitching matchup in game two, also a seven inning contest, is Hiram Burgos (1-5, 5.40) for the Rattlers against Diogenes Rosario (4-4, 3.57) for the Silver Hawks. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 3:40pm CDT.

Wisconsin box score
Outstanding game from Odorizzi. Gennett finished 2-5, adding a double to his homer and almost knocking another ball out on a long fly out. Morris was 2-4 but left the game in the 7th after fouling a ball off his foot. Khris Davis was also 2-4, with a double and HBP. Kentrail Davis was 1-5. What are the odds that Cameron Garfield would draw the Rattlers' only walk? Garfield also had a single and was hit by a pitch.

Wisconsin play-by-play

The first five strikeouts for Odorizzi were of the called variety. After allowing three straight hard-hit fly balls, starting with Richardson's catch to end the 3rd, Odorizzi was faced by South Bend's two-headed 3B monster, Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson, who were both first-round picks last year:

South Bend Bottom 4th

  • Keon Broxton triples (16) on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • David Nick doubles (18) on a fly ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Keon Broxton scores.
  • Bobby Borchering strikes out swinging.
  • Matthew Davidson strikes out swinging.
  • Ramon Castillo grounds out, shortstop Michael Marseco to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Niiiice.

Arnett's last 9 innings - 2 hits 1 run....now that is more like it....I have a feeling that there are several on this board that have their opinion already locked in on Arnett and will not exactly be rooting for his future successes.

Hawn with 2 more home runs...if Morris is injured for a period of time, I would ove to see what Hawn can do in Appleton...

I am really pleased with Huntsville's streak of wins versus jacksonsville, a team that seems led by a jerk manager and with a bunch of "opinionated" players.

And oh yeah, Gennett is amazing.

Final: Huntsville 4, @Jacksonville (Marlins) 1, ten innings

We'll post the Stars' version of the recap when available...

Extra Inning Errors Cost Suns in Sunday Loss

By J.P. Shadrick / Jacksonville Suns

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (56-44, 16-14) committed two errors in the tenth inning contributing to three runs that gave the Huntsville Stars (49-51, 16-14) a 4-1 win in front of 2,195 Sunday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Stars reliever Jim Henderson (4-2) picked up the winning decision, pitching two hitless relief frames. Suns reliever Garrett Parcell (4-7) fell in the losing decision after being charged with three runs, one earned, in the tenth inning.

Huntsville opened the scoring in the fourth inning against Suns starter Elih Villanueva. Zelous Wheeler led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a Chris Nowak hit-by-pitch and Taylor Green walk. Villanueva dealt a wild pitch to score Wheeler for a 1-0 Stars lead (audio).

The Suns tied the game against starter Chris Cody in the seventh inning. With one out Matt Dominguez singled to centerfield, moved to second on a Ryan Curry single and to third on a Brandon Tripp hit-by-pitch. John Otness next hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Dominguez for a 1-1 deadlock (audio).

The Stars took advantage of Jacksonville mistakes for the 10th inning lead. Patrick Arlis led off with an infield single before a Henderson sacrifice bunt moved him to second base. Brett Lawrie's infield single moved to Arlis to third base with one out. Caleb Gindl next hit a ground ball to first baseman Vinny Rottino, and Arlis scored when Rottino's throw sailed high, giving Huntsville a 2-1 lead (audio).

After the runners at first and second stole second and third base, Wheeler hit a ground ball to drawn in shortstop Ozzie Martinez who threw wild over the catcher, allowing both runners to score for a 4-1 score (audio).

Final out audio

Suns LH Andrew Miller will face Stars RH Wily Peralta (making his AA debut) in the final game of the series Monday at 7:05 PM. Monday is Clay County Night at the Baseball Grounds and Belly Buster Monday. Tickets are available through the Suns box office at 358-2846 or by visiting jaxsuns.com.

Huntsville Box Score

More solid, clean winning fundamental baseball -- a pleasant positive as of the past few days up and down the chain; Chris Cody hit one batter but walked none in his 6.1 innings -- the Suns had a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings against Chris, but did not score; only Taylor Green (double, walk) reached base more than once for the Stars, so Cody's effort was required; statistical oddity -- Brett Lawrie only 3-for-his-last-18, yet has a five-game hit streak...

Huntsville Game Log

Stats can be so unfair -- brought in to relieve Chris Cody to try to protect a 1-0 lead in the 7th, Eddie Morlan inherits a bases-loaded, one-out jame. Only one run scores (on a sacrifice fly), yet Morlan is charged with the big "BS" next to his name in the box score -- don't worry, Eddie, we take note, nice job...

Play of the game early on -- CF, RF, doesn't matter -- when will teams stop running on Caleb Gindl?

Jacksonville Bottom 3rd

  • John Otness doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Elih Villanueva out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Chris Cody to second baseman Brett Lawrie. John Otness to 3rd.
  • Lorenzo Scott flies into double play, center fielder Caleb Gindl to catcher Patrick Arlis. John Otness out at home on the throw.

Any word on when/if they'll shut Jake down? He's nearly doubled his innings total from last year.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Final: Helena 4, @Orem 2

Owlz drop from first half contention

Orem Owlz

The Owlz dropped out of contention for the first half title with a 4-2 loss to the Helena Brewers Sunday night. Cody Hawn hit two home runs in the game to power the Brewers.

Hawn's two-run home run in the first inning put the Brewers out in front and they never looked back. The Brewers tacked on another run in the second inning to go ahead 3-0. Travis Witherspoon chipped away at the lead with a solo home run(6) in the sixth inning, but Hawn's second home run of the game in the top of the ninth put the Brewers up 4-1. Thomas Nichols led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run but the comeback was cut short as Helena closer Brian Garman retired three of the next four Owlz batters. Nichols broke out of a slump by going 3-for-4 on the day with a single, a double, and the home run.

Matt Miller, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 draft, started the game for the Brewers and pitched six innings giving up only four hits and one earned run. He was relieved by 2010 second rounder Jimmy Nelson who threw 2.1 innings and gave up three hits and one earned run.

"We gave up two runs in the first inning and in this league that shouldn't beat you," Owlz Manager Tom Kotchman said, "but when you are facing [Helena's] fifth and second rounder, it can be good enough to beat us."

The Owlz squandered away a couple of big rallies early in the game by grounding into three double plays in the first four innings.

Kevin Johnson made his first start of the season on the mound and threw five strong innings only giving up four hits and three earned runs.

"Johnson did a good enough job to win, but we just didn't do it," Kotchman said. "That's been the story of this club this season, we've played just good enough to lose."

Helena box score

Hawn finished 3-4 and bumped his line to .326/.409/.593. Awesome. Johnny Dishon also had a nice game, 2-3 with a walk and his 10th steal. Those two tallied five of the Brewers' six hits. Shea Vucinich was hitless but walked and was hit by a pitch. Miller walked four and struck out three, while Nelson had two of each. Both kept the ball on the ground well, 11/4 GO/AO for Miller and 4/1 for Nelson.

Helena play-by-play

The recap is wrong: Garman came on with one out and one on in the 9th and retired the only two batters he faced. He's allowed only one earned run in 15.2 innings this year. Miller induced double-play grounders to get out of jams in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th. His best Houdini act was the 2nd:

Orem Bottom 2nd

  • Brandon Decker walks.
  • Michael Sodders singles on a line drive to center fielder Franklin Romero. Brandon Decker to 2nd.
  • Thomas Nichols singles on a line drive to right fielder John Dishon. Brandon Decker to 3rd. Michael Sodders to 2nd.
  • Ryan Broussard strikes out swinging.
  • Jesus
Campos grounds into double play, shortstop Shea Vucinich to second
baseman Connor Lind to first baseman Cody Hawn. Thomas Nichols out at
    2nd.

Final: @Albuquerque 14, Nashville 2 (7 innings)

Sounds trounced by Isotopes in rain-shortened game

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds had their three-game winning streak snapped with a rain-shortened 14-2 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday evening at Isotopes Park.

The game was called due to rain at the conclusion of the seventh inning, following a 30-minute delay.

Isotopes starter John Ely turned in a quality start and Albuquerque hitters belted a trio of three-run homers on the evening to contribute to the victory.

Ely (4-1) was credited with a complete game as he held the Sounds to two runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out five batters in the outing.

The Sounds (54-47) took a short-lived lead in the top of the first inning as Lorenzo Cain opened with contest with double to center off Albuquerque starter John Ely then scored on Mat Gamel's one-out RBI single. Gamel's run-scoring knock increased his longest hitting streak of the year to nine games.

Nashville starter Chris Waters struggled in the opening frame for the second consecutive outing, giving up four runs in the bottom of the inning as the Isotopes stormed out to a 4-1 lead.

Jamie Hoffmann and Russ Mitchell singled before John Lindsey (4-for-4) smashed a three-run homer to center off Waters, the first baseman's 16th roundtripper of the year, to put the home team on top by a 3-1 count. Former Sound Jay Gibbons followed with a double and, after Waters walked a pair of batters to load the bases, scored the fourth run of the frame on a Justin Sellers sacrifice fly. Sellers drove in a game-high five runs on the night for Albuquerque.

The Isotopes upped their advantage to 7-1 in the fourth with their second three-run homer of the night, this one coming off the bat of Mitchell against Waters. Hoffmann drew a one-out walk and Ivan DeJesus, Jr. singled before both scored on Mitchell's 17th longball of the season.

Waters (5-8) drew a loss for the fourth straight start after giving up seven runs on nine hits over just four innings of work. He walked a season-high five batters for the second straight outing. The left-hander has posted just one victory in his last 12 trips to the hill for the Sounds (1-7, 5.86 ERA, 38er/58.1ip).

Left-hander Chuck Lofgren took over on the Nashville hill in the fifth and fared no better than Waters, giving up seven runs (five earned) over three innings in his first relief inning of the season.

The Isotopes greeted Lofgren with a three-run fifth. Hoffmann contributed an RBI single before Gibbons plated two unearned runs with a single later in the frame as Albuquerque stretched its lead to 10-1.

The Isotopes tacked on their 11th run in the sixth when Sellers doubled home Michael Restovich, who had drawn an inning-opening walk from Lofgren.

First baseman Joe Koshansky led off the seventh inning with his team-leading 16th home run of the year for Nashville, a blast to center off Ely that made it an 11-2 contest.

Sellers walloped the home team's third three-run homer of the night in the seventh off Lofgren, the infielder's fifth big fly of the year.

Second baseman Eric Farris led off the second with a single for the Sounds to extend his PCL hitting streak to nine games. He is 3-for-7 in two games with Nashville since returning from the D.L.

The teams wrap up the series with 1:05 p.m. CT contest on Monday afternoon. Left-hander Chase Wright (6-6, 4.25) will man the bump for the Sounds to take on Albuquerque southpaw Alberto Bastardo (4-1, 4.24).

Nashville box score

Both Cain and Gamel finished 1-3. You can listen to Koshansky's blast here. Ugly line from Lofgren. But hey, we scored first!

AZL Brewers box score

Charly Bashara started and went seven strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned). Dexter Bobo finished up the last two frames. Second baseman Nick Shaw had a great night, 4-5 with two doubles. Shaw had been doing a great job singling and taking walks, but had only five extra-base hits entering today. Jason Rogers was also a force, homering to go with two doubles of his own. The 6'2", 250-pound first baseman had displayed even less power than Shaw coming in, with just four extra-base knocks to his name, so it's nice to see him start flexing his muscles and take advantage of the hot Arizona air. Tyler Roberts continues to hit well, also doubling twice and drawing a walk. Roberts committed no passed balls but did have a throwing error. T.J. Mittelstaedt, 3-4 tonight, continues to rebound from his slow start. Max Walla was 1-4 with a double and three strikeouts. It had been reported that Jody Gerut would begin a rehab assignment in Arizona tonight, but he did not.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Two out thunder from the Brewers in the 4th:

AZL Brewers Top 4th

  • Tyler Roberts doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Jean Acevedo.
  • Jason Rogers doubles (3) on a ground ball to left fielder Jean Acevedo. Tyler Roberts scores.
  • Maxwell Walla strikes out swinging.
  • Yadiel Rivera called out on strikes.
  • Thomas
Mittelstaedt singles on a line drive to center fielder Alfredo Morales.
Jason Rogers scores. Thomas Mittelstaedt to 2nd on the throw.
  • Derrick Shaw doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Guillermo Pimentel. Thomas Mittelstaedt scores.
  • Nick Shaw doubles (5) on a fly ball to left fielder Jean Acevedo. Derrick Shaw scores.
  • John Bivens strikes out swinging.

I guess Roberts was trying to pick off the runner here:

AZL Mariners Bottom 4th

  • Carlos Ramirez walks.
  • Ji-Man Choi singles on a fly ball to center fielder Kenneth Allison. Carlos Ramirez to 2nd.
  • Jose Flores singles on a fly ball to right fielder Maxwell Walla. Carlos Ramirez to 3rd. Ji-Man Choi to 2nd.

Rogers. Carlos Ramirez scores. Ji-Man Choi to 3rd. Jose Flores

  • Jean Acevedo grounds out, shortstop Yadiel Rivera to first baseman Jason Rogers. Ji-Man Choi scores. Jose Flores to 3rd.

Stars sneak past Suns in extra innings

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars (16-14, 49-51) took advantage of two Jacksonville Suns (16-14, 56-44) errors in the top half of the tenth inning to prevail 4-1 Sunday afternoon.

It was a pitcher’s duel early on as Chris Cody and Elih Villanueva were both excellent on the hill. The Stars got on the board first in the top of the fourth. Zelous Wheeler led-off the inning with a single to center. Wheeler swiped second base and with one away Chris Nowak got hit by a pitch. The Stars loaded the bases after Taylor Green drew a walk. Villanueva managed to get Lee Haydel pop out, but with Patrick Arlis at the plate, the former Florida State Seminole uncorked a wild pitch. Wheeler came hustling home and the Stars grabbed the 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile Cody walked a bit of a tightrope. In the first inning the Suns got a runner to third but a sharp liner to Green allowed him to turn the unassisted double play and get Cody out of trouble.

Ryan Curry smacked a two-out double in the second but Cody struck-out Jason Delaney to end the inning.

In the third, the Suns got another man to third base and this time Lorenzo Scott hit a fly ball to center that Caleb Gindl caught and fired to plate. His throw was true and John Otness was out by a mile.

Cody hardly broke a sweat after a one-out double in the fourth went for naught for Jacksonville.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning that Cody sent the Suns down 1-2-3, and he ran into more trouble in the seventh. Back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with only one away. Stars’ manager Mike Guerrero opted to call on Eddie Morlan to relieve Cody and try to get out of the inning.

Morlan would do exactly that but not before an Otness sacrifice fly tied things up at one. Cody got a no-decision but pitched well, going 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, surrendering the lone run, walking nobody and striking out two.

The game remained tied until the fateful tenth.

Arlis legged out an infield single against reliever Kris Harvey. Stars’ pitcher Jim Henderson got down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, putting the go-ahead run into scoring position. Brett Lawrie followed with an infield single of his own and the Stars had runners at the corners with only one down. Gindl chopped a ball to first base that Vinny Rottino threw wild to home, allowing Arlis to score and giving the Stars the 2-1 lead. Huntsville showed off their trademark aggressiveness by pulling off a double steal. With runners on second and third, the poor defense continued as Wheeler hit a grounder to short that Osvaldo Martinez threw wildly to home, so wild was his throw that two runs scored on the play, extending the lead to 4-1.

Henderson tossed a scoreless bottom of the 10th to give the Stars their third consecutive victory and a much-needed series win over the Suns. The Stars managed to win the game despite only tallying six hits (no one had a multi-hit game) and zero RBI.

The Stars look to take four of five from the Suns as they play at 6:05 PM central time Monday night. Michael Fiers (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will take on Andrew Miller (1-5, 5.52 ERA). You can hear all the action only on www.huntsvillestars.com.

Let's hope the staff's info is correct and Fiers is good to go tonight.

Silver Hawks: Bats silenced by Timber Rattlers

By LATASHA MILES, South Bend Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- Wisconsin's Jake Odorizzi quieted the South Bend bats Sunday afternoon.

The Silver Hawks generated just four hits and lost a 7-1 Midwest League baseball game to the Timber Rattlers.

Offensive contributions were limited. The Silver Hawks' only run scored in the bottom of the fourth when David Nick doubled home Keon Broxton. Broxton had reached base on his 16th triple of the season, three shy of the Midwest League record.

"Our approach wasn't the same as it was (Thursday night, a 12-hit win over Beloit)," Nick said. "We didn't come out swinging like we normally do. We have to take good swings on our pitches. It wasn't an issue on our effort, (but Sunday) we couldn't get anything together offensively and the results showed with just four hits."

In his six innings, Odorizzi held the Hawks to three hits, striking out eight. Eric Arnett of Indiana University, followed with three scoreless innings."We threw out a pretty good guy today with Odorizzi," said Jeff Isom, Wisconsin's manager. "He located both sides of the plate. He threw the ball very well and the (Hawks) just ran into a quality pitcher."

"When you get down that many runs, you have to put hits together and we didn't," Silver Hawks skipper Mark Haley said. "Our hands were tied and they kind of took us out of (the game)."

Hawks starting pitcher Adam Worthington opened strong, two scoreless innings, before allowing five hits, five runs, including a home run. Worthington pitched 3 1/3 innings before being replaced by Brad Gemberling.

"We were a little flat," Haley said. "We have to be a little more patient and we (have) to make adjustments. Early on, we were keeping the ball down and pitching well, then we left a few pitches up in the count. (Wisconsin) is an aggressive team (and) the game just got away from us."

The series will conclude Monday when the two teams face a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 PM (4:00 Central). "We (have) to execute our plan no matter what," Haley said. "We have to pick it up a notch (Monday) and make sure we pay attention to detail."
