Braddock needs to be in 2011 rotation

You don't use options until you are added to the 40-man roster. If you are in the minors and on the 40-man roster you are considered to be on optional assignment(Jeffress) unless you are on a rehab assignment in which case you would be acquiring MLB service time(Gamel this year). If you spend at least 20 days on optional assignment you use an option for that year. I believe that Gallardo and Braun were added to the 40-man roster just before being called up. That is how I understand the rules.

Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Honestly I think a pinned thread on options & roster management questions would be very useful in this forum. Don't want to hijack this thread any more than I/we already have, so I'll take a crack at starting one.

I'd much rather use Braddock in the setup man role for at least two more years and seeing how his arm holds up before even considering him in a starting role. Maybe then it could make sense to try the switch.

C.J. Wilson in Texas was a RP for his first five seasons before trying him in the rotation this year and he's been very effective, so it's not like if Baddock was used in the pen for a couple of years that he has to stay in that role permanently.

Plus, while starters are obviously more important than relief pitchers simply because they throw so many more innings, back-end of the bullpen pitchers aren't without importance as we saw early in this season as Hawkins and Hoffman's terrible struggles was a significant role in burying the team. A cheap young duo of Braddock and Axford the next two/three years or so handling the 8th-9th innings could be fun to watch, but obviously somehow the rotation and team defense will need upgrading for those two to be closing out important games instead of as things are now.

Cot's doesn't have all the info for options with specific players. When I have askled for clarification in the past on specific players, the writers over at JSOnline have actually been helpful over email. I don't know if they can contact the league office where all that info is on file like GMs can.

I don't know of a good source for options on specific players. The player index for the 40-man and 25-man roster on this site has them I think. The links seem to be broken though. 404 not found

And Rivas, Odorizzi, Heckathorn will be a great 7-8-9 when Braddock & Jeffress hit arby & get traded. Maybe Arnett & Covey will be ready for the role after that.

I understand Braddock staying in the relief role for injury concerns, but if they keep Jeffress as a reliever, I'll be pretty upset. He's definitely got "top of the rotation stuff," can throw in the upper 90's late into games and his issues are definitely not arm related. We have plenty of minor league starters who project to be decent middle relievers. We can't throw our "high upside" starting pitchers into relief roles until we're absolutely certain they can't cut it as a starter.

Braddock-Jeffress-Axford could be dominating, but if we continue our quest for starters on the discount FA rack, we won't have many leads for them to hold & save. Since they wasted on option on Jeffress this season, we have two more years for him to get "stretched out" as a starter. No need to rush him to the majors just so we have the best 7th inning guy in baseball when he could be at the top of our rotation if we have a little patience.

That's what relievers do, pitch when their situation arises. Axford has been worked when needed, as has Loe. If you decide you have to baby your relievers and have a day or two off between outings, you need a dozen relievers. When you figure out how to do that with a 25 man roster, let us know.

When the season is lost & you're talking about arguably your most valuable young bullpen arm, you most definitely put his workload ahead of his "situation". To be honest, the Brewers might just be being careful here. I thought I read shoulder or arm fatigue as his injury.
