Concerts Worth Seeing... Live Music Thread

Great thread idea, RKFG. One of the main reasons I'm leaving Alaska is because I miss live music so much. Most of the artists that head to Alaska are has beens and the price of a ticket is outrageous. For example, tickets for 311 and Presidents of the US were $50, and Everclear is here this week for $40.

Here are the shows I plan on seeing when I get back to the lower 48.

Friday, Aug 13 - Interpol @ The Rave

Saturday, Aug 14 - Red Man/Method Man @ The Rave

Monday, Aug 16 - STP @ The Rave (I never saw them in the 90s when they were huge so I'm really looking forward to this show)

Friday, Sept 3 - Eminem/Jay-Z @ Comerica Park

Saturday, Sept 18 - Louis CK @ The Pabst Theatre (Not a concert but hilarious stand up comedy)

Thursday, Sept 23 - Tokyo Police Club @ Turner Hall

Saturday, Oct 2 - The Eels @ The Pabst Theatre

If anyone's even remotely a fan of My Morning Jacket or Tool and have the opportunity to see them, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not going. Unless it's sold out and I need tickets... 2 of the best shows I've seen. Wilco at the Pabst last spring was a treat as well, after years of seeing them in the craphole that is the Rave.

As for concerts with actual dates, I'm contemplating seeing Built To Spill @ Turner Hall on Friday, but will most likely pass due to budgetary reasons. Pretty much anything at Pabst/Riverside/Turner in Milwaukee is worth seeing. Great venues.

I only say this because I'm not sure how much mainstream recognition they have for their live performances, but Robert Randolph & the Family Band rock you every single time they take the stage. Randolph himself is especially a dynamic performer. I went to see them again at Summerfest this year, and they were, of course, sensational. Not sure when they'll be in the area next, so sorry (& sorry if everyone & their mother knows how great they are live).

If you appreciate guitar at all, this will be a show for you. I've honestly/embarrassedly even gone to one of his shows with my parents (but my friends went too!)

I hadn't been to the Rave in about 4 years and remembered the sound as being pretty crappy most of the time. I went last Friday to see Band of Horses and actually thought the sound was pretty good. I'm not a gigantic fan of their most recent album (or second for that matter) but I enjoyed them a ton, a lot of energy and whatnot.

I'm going to Lollapalooza the last day. I'm most excited about The National and Arcade Fire, but of course The National lead right into Arcade Fire and are on a different stage. I'll be lucky to see 1/3 of The National's set if I want any sort of decent view for AF.

I'm highly unimpressed with The Rave's calendar until October when I would like to see Black Label Society and would love to go see Slayer/Megadeth/Anthrax on Oct. 16.

There's a chance I may start going to Rave shows again since I will be moving to the Milwaukee area in a few weeks. Those late night drives back to Madison after a show can really wear you down.

Anyone ever been to "The Stage" at 7200 W Fond Du Lac Ave on the NW side? I hadn't heard of it before and saw a listing on Pollstar that interests me.

The Arcade Fire played Mad Planet on November 24, 2004 and it was the greatest show I've ever seen. I saw them again at Lollapalooza either in 2004 or 2005 and them and the Pixies were the highlights of the festival. Don't miss them!

Turner Hall is a great venue, you'll enjoy it. My band played it once and I hope to do it again. The people in charge of booking Turner/Pabst/Riverside are really improving the live music experience in Milwaukee.

Lyle Lovett is playing the state fair on opening night. I saw him two years ago at the Overture in Madison and he was pretty amazing. He tours with a "large" band and they put on a stellar show. People tend to think of him as a country act - which would be accurate to an extent - but they cover all the American roots music bases: country, gospel, jazz, bluegrass, blues, folk, R&B, etc. And Lovett's got an amazing voice. Maybe an act that fits better in a theater than outdoors, but worth the price of admission if you like good American music.

If anyone is a Pink Floyd fan and wants to see a good show for cheap, Think Floyd is playing on the 7th at State Fair. I've seen them twice and for a cover band, they were very good both times i saw them.

BTW, did anyone here go to the Dead Weather show a few days ago at the Pabst Theater? I really wanted to go but couldn't make it.

Do you know if they tour with Neko Case and Dan Bejar? I am seeing them in a week at Lollapalooza and hope its not just Newman.

Speaking of which, anyone else going to Lolla? This is going to turn into a long post, but here is my rough schedule. Any suggestions on other bands to see? I don't plan on going much during the day since the lineup isn't as good as last year: Here is a link to the full lineup where you can switch days with the pulldown:

My rough schedule:

Fri: Drive By Truckers, New Pornos, Black Keys, The Strokes

Sat: Metric, Spoon, Cut Copy, Phoenix (kind of a disapointing day)

Sun: Erykah Badu, Wolfmother, Cypress Hill, Soundgarden (unfortunately going to have to miss The National)

I know they will be at the Madison show so i'm assuming they will be at lollapalooza. i wouldn't be going if they weren't.

They were all there at Lolla. My favorite part of the show was just watching how weird Bejar is. When its a song that he didn't write, he just walks off stage and gets another beer. Comes back out eventually cracking one on the way out, picks up an instrument and plays or just stands there. For 2 songs I think he was playing but had his back to the crowd for some reason. Then he just switches on his rock star persona and kills it on his songs.

As for other bands at Lolla, Cut Copy blew my mind. I had only heard a couple of their songs, but they put on an awesome show. It was too bad hardly anyone was there because Green Day had started up. Those that were saw an awesome show with a lot of interaction and great music.
