Fiers out of the game after two innings. Don't know why but they said Fiers looked unhappy about it.

Still no update via the broadcast. It's been a while since I listened to a full 10-0 broadcast, it's the bottom of the 9th. Rally cap!

There was quite the scary moment in the 8th when Caleb Gindl, whom the broadcasters had indicated had been playing really nice defense in center field as of late, crashed into the wall and crumpled to the ground after attempting to make a catch. Right fielder Drew Anderson anxiously waved out the training staff and yet Gindl managed to stay in the game. Tough kid, and a big injury scare averted.

Final: West Tenn 10, @Huntsville 0

Huntsville box score

Mike Fiers made the start but left after two scoreless innings for an unknown reason. Lucas Luetge took over and was hammered, allowing eight runs in three innings, including a grand slam, the second day in a row the Stars have been slammed. Huntsville couldn't get anything going on offense, in part because Brett Lawrie got the day off; they managed just five hits and drew no walks. Caleb Gindl was 2-4 with his eighth steal, and Taylor Green was 1-3.

Huntsville play-by-play

Patrick Arlis relieved starting catcher Dayton Buller in the 8th. After allowing the grand slam in the 4th, the Stars needed to shut down the Diamond Jaxx from there on out to have a chance to get back in the game, but this happened instead:

Is Peralta working on getting more ground balls like Rivas? Because his strikeouts are down this year as well.

Final: @Helena 11, Orem 5

Eight-run inning lifts Helena over Orem

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (15-14) scored eight runs in the fourth inning to coast to an 11-5 win against the Orem Owls (14-15). The victory gave the Brewers a much needed series win as they head on the road for a seven-game stretch.

John Dishon led off the fourth with a walk. After five hits, two more walks, and a hit batsman, the Brewers held a 9-1 advantage. Brent Dean, Robbie Garvey, and Brandon Sizemore each singled in the inning. Carlos George doubled, and Cody Hawn found his fifth homerun of the season.

Four Brewers had multi-hit games: Garvey (2-4), Hawn (3-5), Dishon (2-3), Dean (2-4). Hawn, who finished the night with a homer and a double, now leads the Pioneer league in doubles (14) and RBI (30).

Matt Miller (3-1, 3.30) started on the mound and got the win. He threw five innings and allowed three runs. Two runs came after the long fourth inning. He finished with three walks and three strikeouts.

Jimmy Nelson, a 2nd round draft choice out of the University of Alabama, was sharp out of the pen, throwing two hitless innings. He struck out five and walked one.

The Brewers now make the trek to Ogden for four games and Orem for three. They find themselves still two games back of Great Falls for first place in the Pioneer League North. Action returns to Kindrick Field July 29th for a two-game set with Great Falls, which could decide a first-half champion.

Helena box score

Nice for Nelson to finally put up a scoreless line. He now has 14 strikeouts in 8.1 innings, impressive considering he's probably doing it almost entirely on his average-velocity fastball. Miller came in with only five walks in 25 innings; he got eight ground outs against only four fly outs. Hawn's line now sits at .313/.402/.565 in 132 PA. Good college players should hit well in the Pioneer League, and first basemen in particular have to hit a ton to be real prospects, but you have to like what Hawn's done so far. The same goes for Shea Vucinich, who was 1-4 with a walk tonight and is now hitting .336/.413/.579. Nothing wrong with that line from a middle infielder.

Helena play-by-play

Nothing better than a good half-page inning:

Helena Bottom 4th

  • John Dishon walks.
  • Michael Walker reaches on force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Wes Hatton. John Dishon to 3rd.
  • Brandon Sizemore hit by pitch. Michael Walker to 2nd.
  • Brent
Dean singles on a ground ball to left fielder Daniel Eichelberger.
John Dishon scores. Michael Walker scores. Brandon Sizemore to
    3rd.
  • Carlos George doubles (7) on a fly ball to left fielder Daniel Eichelberger. Brandon Sizemore scores. Brent Dean to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Yeison Almeida replaces Brian Diemer.
  • Robert Garvey singles on a ground ball to center fielder Andrew Heid. Brent Dean scores. Carlos George scores.
  • With Shea Vucinich batting, Robert Garvey steals (1) 2nd base.
  • Shea
Vucinich flies into double play, center fielder Andrew Heid to third
baseman Thomas Nichols. Robert Garvey out at 3rd on the throw.
  • Cody Hawn homers (5) on a fly ball to left field.
  • Gregory Hopkins walks.
  • John Dishon hit by pitch. Gregory Hopkins to 2nd.
  • Michael Walker walks. Gregory Hopkins to 3rd. John Dishon to 2nd.
  • Brandon
Sizemore singles on a fly ball to left fielder Daniel Eichelberger.
Gregory Hopkins scores. John Dishon scores. Michael Walker to 3rd.

  • Brent Dean flies out to center fielder Andrew Heid.

Final: @AZL Angels 9, AZL Brewers 6

AZL Brewers box score

Francisco Rivero started and allowed six runs in an inning of work, though only one was earned. He was removed after one batter in the 2nd inning; not sure if that was a pitch-count thing or what, but Rivero had previously gone at least four innings in every appearance, so he was stretched out. Like their MLB brethren, the Brewers dug themselves a big hole but almost climbed out of it, closing to 7-6 in the 5th inning, but couldn't get over the hump. Eric Farris was 2-4 with a walk and two doubles, while Tyler Roberts, Yadiel Rivera, and Kenny Allison were each 2-5 with a double, Derrick Shaw was 2-4 with a triple, and Justin Parker was 2-3 with a walk. Max Walla was 1-4 with a double, struck out once, and tallied another outfield assist. No Demetrius McKelvie. Roberts keeps hitting, but committed his 8th passed ball in 16 games. The opposing starter was 2010 Angels first-rounder Cameron Bedrosian, son of former big-leaguer Steve Bedrosian.

AZL Brewers play-by-play
Rivero got the first two batters out in the 1st inning before the next seven reached. An error by first baseman Jason Rogers made them all unearned. Roberts was up as the tying run with two outs in the 9th but popped out to the catcher.

Final: Albuquerque (Dodgers) 9, Nashville 7

Isotopes Defeat Sounds

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds endured a 9-7 defeat at the hands of the Albuquerque Isotopes on Tuesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in a contest that featured more runs scored (16) than total hits (14).

The loss was the second in a row for Nashville (51-45) following a three-game win streak and dropped the Sounds a game and a half behind first-place Iowa, which swept a doubleheader against Oklahoma City.

The game got off to a sloppy start as the teams played a 37-minute first inning that including nine runs scored on only two hits. The clubs combined for four errors, five walks, a wild pitch, and a passed ball in the opening frame.

Sounds pitcher Chris Waters suffered through a disastrous start as Albuquerque plated six first-inning runs using only one hit. The left-hander matched his season high for walks in a game within the first seven batters of the contest, issuing five free passes over that stretch including one with the bases loaded.

After Waters walked the bases loaded with three straight, the Isotopes got on the board when former Sound Jay Gibbons lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Ivan DeJesus, Jr. After a walk to Jamie Hoffmann re-loaded the bases, Lucas May - who struck out six times in six trips to the plate in Monday's series opener - drew an RBI walk on a 3-2 pitch to make it a 2-0 contest.

With Justin Sellers at the plate, Waters made a pickoff throw to first that glanced off the top of first baseman Erick Almonte's glove, allowing two more runs to score and increasing the visitors' lead to 4-0 without the benefit of a hit. Sellers then jacked a two-run homer to left, his third longball of the season, to up the Isotopes' lead to 6-0.

Waters (5-7) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs in his lone inning of work, the shortest start of the year by a Nashville pitcher. It marked only the fourth time in 18 starts that the southpaw allowed four or more runs in an outing.

Nashville got three runs back in the bottom of the inning against Albuquerque starter Alberto Bastardo using only one hit of their own as the Isotopes committed three errors in the frame. Ray Olmedo - who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the night - recorded the lone Sounds' hit of the inning, a two-out RBI single that cut the deficit to 6-3.

Albuquerque third baseman Russ Mitchell upped the Isotopes' lead to 8-3 in the second when he slugged a two-run homer to left off Nashville reliever David Johnson that sailed just inside the left field foul pole, his 15th roundtripper of the year. DeJesus also scored on the blast after preceding Mitchell with a single.

DeJesus continued his solid night in the fourth when he drilled a two-out solo homer to left off Johnson, the infielder's fourth tater of the season.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever LaTroy Hawkins made his first rehab appearance for the Sounds in the contest and pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings with one strikeout. He threw 17 pitches (12 strikes) and did not allow a ball out of the infield (two groundouts, one lineout).

Bastardo (4-1) picked up the win with a quality start for the visitors, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Sounds plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth against Albuquerque reliever Ramon Troncoso, but had a pair of runners thrown out at third during the inning to shorten the rally.

Mat Gamel and Brendan Katin drew consecutive walks to open the frame before Gamel scored on a one-out Olmedo single to left, a play which ended with Katin being tossed out at third after the throw to the plate was cut. After a Luis Cruz single put runner on first and second, the Sounds worked up a replay of the previous run-scoring play. Catcher Ben Johnson grounded an RBI single to left to plate Olmedo, with Cruz being erased at third by the mid-diamond cutoff man to end the inning.

Gamel wrapped up the night's scoring in the ninth when he slugged a two-out, two-run homer to center off Isotopes reliever Cory Wade. The third baseman's fifth home run of the year brought the score to its final 9-7 standing (click the lead link in this post for the audio).

Almonte went 1-for-4 for the Sounds to extend his hitting streak to seven games, matching the veteran's best effort of the year.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 PM meeting on Wednesday night. Left-hander Chase Wright (6-5, 3.56) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Albuquerque knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (1-1, 4.94).

Nashville Box Score

Reliever Mike McClendon retired all five batters he faced, three ground balls, two K's; Mat Gamel's 2010 AAA OBP is inching up, now at .370; Luis Cruz 2-for-4, still at .291, but his production binge from early in the season has dried up -- zero RBI in 60 July AB's; where will Josh Butler slot into the Wright - McLeary - Narron - Lofgren - Waters rotation? Shouldn't be difficult to find a spot -- we tend to think of Butler as a youngster, but he'll be 26 in December...

Nashville Game Log

This game sure had elements of the big league contest Tuesday night...

Peralta's gem propels Manatees over Cardinals

Palm Beach Cardinals Site

Jupiter, FL- The Brevard County Manatees (42-52, 15-10) beat the Palm Beach Cardinals (52-42, 13-12) tonight at Roger Dean Stadium by a score of 5-1. Wily Peralta (6-3) tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out four to help the Manatees take a 2-1 series lead.

Catcher Sean McCraw had a great game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two-runs scored. McCraw also swiped a bag, which was his first of the year. Peter Fatse had another multi-hit performance and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Palm Beach starter Brett Zawacki (3-3) allowed four runs on five hits and walked four in six innings of work.

Alex Castellanos accounted for the only Palm Beach run with a two-out RBI triple in the eighth inning. Castellanos finished 2-for-4. Slugger Xavier Scruggs finished 2-for-3 with two singles and scored a run.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium. Kevin Thomas will take the hill and will look to help the Cardinals salvage the final game of the series. First pitched is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

JUPITERWily Peralta pitched three-hit shutout ball for seven innings as the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 5-1 Tuesday night in a Florida State League baseball game.

Peralta struck out four and walked two in improving to 6-3.

Peter Fatse, Sean McCraw, Matt Cline and Erik Komatsu each had run-scoring singles for the Manatees, who will finish the three-game road series against the Cardinals tonight.

Brevard County Box Score

Well, Wily Peralta surely tired of us asking for a dominating performance, perhaps most impressively pitching around infield errors in three of the first four innings; Peralta struck out two to end the 2nd inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd base; Angel Salome walked in his return to the lineup, again as the designated hitter...

Brevard County Game Log

With a 5-0 lead to begin the bottom of the 8th, why would Jeremy Jeffress be removed after a two-out walk? No indication of an injury delay in the game log -- that doesn't bode well, does it?

Palm Beach Bottom 8th

  • Pitcher Change: Jeremy Jeffress replaces Wily Peralta.
  • Niko Vasquez called out on strikes.
  • Charles Cutler lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Xavier Scruggs walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Ruben Flores replaces Jeremy Jeffress.
  • Alex Castellanos triples (5) on a fly ball to center fielder Erik Komatsu. Xavier Scruggs scores.
  • Richard Racobaldo grounds out, pitcher Ruben Flores to first baseman Sean Halton.

Here's to investigative journalism http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif --

From our contact at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL, home of the Palm Beach Cardinals:

I was not at the game last night, but my press box assistant seems to think he was having some shoulder discomfort. That is not confirmed however. Nor is it a true medical opinion.

So with those disclaimers, it'll be something to keep an eye on. Time for Adam, Tom, or Anthony to make a phone call or two.
