Merklinger has a shutout through 6 with 6 K's. Tees up 3-0. Audio trouble with everybody else.

Edit. Merklinger is the new Odorizzi (at least for tonight). 8 innings of shutout ball. Jeffress in for the 9th. Kjeldgaard has been held to 1 RBI, 14 K's by Tees hitters today after yesterday's outburst.

Edit2. Jeffress lit up again. 5 hits and 3 runs in the 9th. He can't get any off speed stuff over the plate so hitters just wait for the fastball. He finally got the "save" with a strikeout with the tying and lead runs on base.

just got back.. have 3 kids under 5, so 2 were getting tired.

Odorizzi looked better than the final numbers. He sat at 99 on the notorious stadium gun all 6 innings, and his offspeed stuff was frequently around 76, throwing it for strikes.

In the second, he walked a guy and with 2 outs, he gave up a long fly that was very playable, but the LF dropped it. They scored it as his first hit and an earned run, but I didnt see it that way. Come to think of it, there were quite a few drops that inning by the T-Rats.

In the third he lost it a bit and started throwing up gopher balls, with all 3 coming in a very short span of pitches that were all line drives over the CF wall. The pitching coach talked to him after the third HR and he was solid the rest of the night.

Probably the biggest knock on him was that he was giving up fly balls, though most were pretty shallow.

*******************************

Gennett scorched a nice double down the 1b line. The 3-run HR by Davis was a moonshot that barely cleared CF.

The first pitch of the game was fouled off and fielded by my 4-year-old as we were about to enter the stadium, giving him his 3rd baseball souvenir in 3 t-rats games.

In the bottom of the first D-Vo started things off with a huge triple to CF. Next ball is lined to the pitcher and D-Vo freezes off of 3rd base with no outs and ends up in a rundown. Still that inning, someone knocks a single and I think Morris tries to score from 2B. The RF nailed him by several steps.

With 5K+ in attendance, I ended up in the grass, and was nervous about my little ones running around free out there. Just as my wife & I were discussing it, a foul ball hits some lady, and the game was stopped for several minutes. I didnt see it, but I saw them taking her out on a stretcher.

Final: @Brevard County 4, Charlotte 3

Brevard County box score

As noted above, Jeremy Jeffress made the 9th inning far too interesting, nearly blowing a four-run lead. He gave up three runs on five hits, walking none and fanning one. Dan Merklinger was phenomenal, going eight innings and striking out nine while walking three and surrendering three hits. Scott Krieger's recent hot streak (multiple hits in each of his last five games) got him moved up to third in the order, where he went 1-3 with a double and a sac fly. Matt Cline was 1-3 with a walk, the only Manatee on more than once. Erik Komatsu did not play.

Brevard County play-by-play

The Manatees' three-run 4th:

Brevard County Bottom 4th

  • Matt Cline singles on a line
drive to left fielder Christopher Murrill.
  • With Scott Krieger
batting, wild pitch by Matthew Moore, Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Scott
Krieger doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Reid Fronk.
    Matt Cline scores.
  • Sean Halton called out on strikes.
  • Shawn
    Zarraga walks.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a line drive to
center fielder Isaias Velasquez. Scott Krieger scores. Shawn
    Zarraga to 2nd.
  • With Michael Roberts batting, throwing error
by Matthew Moore on the pickoff attempt, Shawn Zarraga to 3rd. Brock
    Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Michael Roberts grounds out, second baseman
Matthew Hall to first baseman Michael Sheridan. Shawn Zarraga
    scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd.
  • Juan Sanchez lines out to
    second baseman Matthew Hall.

Jeffress's inning:

Charlotte Top 9th

  • Tim Beckham singles on a ground ball
    to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Reid Fronk lines out to
    second baseman Steve Braun.
  • Stephen Vogt singles
on a line drive to center fielder Juan Sanchez. Tim Beckham to 3rd.
  • Greg Sexton singles on a line drive to center fielder Juan
Sanchez. Tim Beckham scores. Stephen Vogt to 2nd.
  • Matt
Spring singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
Stephen Vogt scores. Greg Sexton to 2nd.
  • Michael Sheridan
flies out to right fielder Scott Krieger.
  • Anthony
Scelfo singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
Greg Sexton scores. Matt Spring to 2nd.
  • Christopher Murrill
    called out on strikes.

You'd think, given the lack of walks and the high hit total, that Jeffress got unlucky, but he gave up five line drives.

Nashville tops Omaha 5-2 on Saturday night

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds beat the division-rival Omaha Royals 5-2 on Saturday night at historic Greer Stadium in front of 8,083 fans in the third game of a four game set.

Marty McLeary (3-6) threw his second quality start for the win, allowing two runs while scattering eight hits with two strikeouts in six innings pitched. Over his last three starts, the veteran right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA (3 ER/17.1 IP). Mike McClendon continued to dominate in relief, striking out three over three shutout innings to earn his first Triple-A save.

Coming into tonight's game hitting .400 (22-for-55) over his last 18 games, Adam Stern continued to stay hot for Nashville going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Erick Almonte also added two hits, his third multi-hit game in a row.

The Sounds jumped on the board in the opening frame as Nashville third baseman Mat Gamel crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for 1-0 lead. The long ball was Gamel's fourth of the year and first since July 2.

The Royals knotted the contest at 1-1 in the next frame, as Mike Moustakas singled for his first Triple-A hit and later scored on a two-out RBI double by second baseman Marc Maddox.

Nashville upped the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning after Joe Koshansky reached base with a single to begin the inning and later scored on a Ray Olmedo fielder's choice. Stern then singled home Olmedo for the second run of the inning.

The Royals came within a run in the top of the third inning as Alex Gordon doubled off the wall in left center to bring home Ed Lucas.

Nashville extended the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Stern homered over the right field wall, his third tater of the season. Later in the inning, designated hitter Almonte smacked a hard hit ball off Moustakas' glove that ricocheted into left field, bringing home Norris Hopper from third base for a final 5-2 lead.

Omaha starting pitcher Philip Humber (4-6) was removed from the game with two outs in the bottom of the second inning after he was hit with a Martin Maldonado line drive on his non-pitching shoulder. Following Humber, Federico Castaneda allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

The Sounds and Royals wrap up their four-game series with Sunday evening's 6:35 pm CT finale at historic Greer Stadium. Left-hander Sam Narron (4-3, 2.88) takes the hill for the Sounds against Omaha right-hander Manauris Baez (2-1, 4.05).

Nashville box score

Hey, a Phil Humber sighting. Nice job by McClendon. Gamel committed a throwing error, his 10th error of the year.

Nashville play-by-play

Omaha was only down by one in the 4th and had runners on first and second with no outs when a sac bunt attempt went horribly wrong:

Omaha Top 4th

  • Marc Maddox reaches on throwing error by
    third baseman Mat Gamel.
  • Cody Clark singles on a ground ball
to left fielder Adam Stern. Marc Maddox to 2nd.
  • David Lough

BC edges Charlotte to take series

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Opportune hitting and an outstanding start by Dan Merklinger propelled the Brevard County Manatees to a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Merklinger threw eight shutout innings and struck out nine, while allowing three hits and walking three. He extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 14 1/3 innings.

Brevard County (13-9) managed just three hits on the night, but they were all timely as they were all in the third inning as the Manatees plated three in the frame.

Matt Cline led the inning off with an double and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Scott Krieger then doubled to right to score Cline and put Brevard County on the board.

Two batters later, Shawn Zarraga would walk and then Brock Kjeldgaard singled to center to drive in Krieger to make it 2-0. Then with Michael Roberts up, an errant pick-off attempt to first by Charlotte's Matthew Moore advanced Zarraga to third and Kjeldgaard to second. A RBI ground out from Roberts would then give the Manatees a 3-0 lead.

Brevard County would get another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Krieger that scored Steve Braun and that run would prove to be very beneficial.

Jeremy Jeffress relieved Merklinger in the ninth and had trouble finishing out the game as he allowed five singles and three runs as Charlotte (9-14) cut Brevard County's lead to 4-3.

But with two outs and runners on first and second, Jeffress was able to punch out Christopher Merrill on a called strike three to preserve the Manatees victory.

With the win, Brevard County took three of four games from the first half winners of the South Division. Also with losses by both Tampa and Daytona, the Manatees moved into second place in the North Division and are just one game back of the Yankees for the division lead.

The Manatees will now hit the road for their longest road trip of the season with ten-game trip spanning over 11 days.

Brevard County will take on the Palm Beach Cardinals for a four-game series beginning on Sunday. Then the Manatees will travel to Fort Myers for a four-game set against the Miracle, starting on July 22. The road trip will conclude with two games against the St. Lucie Mets, beginning on July 27.

The next home game for the Manatees will be on Thursday, July 29 at 7:05 p.m. against the St. Lucie Mets.

Odorizzi looked better than the final numbers. He sat at 99 on the notorious stadium gun all 6 innings, and his offspeed stuff was frequently around 76, throwing it for strikes.

Just wanted to check with you, uwis, but the times I've been to Time Warner Field, the velocity display board is missing some bulbs on the right-hand digit. Are you sure he was getting clocked at 99, and it wasn't just the defective light board? He was nowhere near the upper 90s when I saw him pitch earlier this season. I wouldn't question your firsthand reporting (thanks, btw) if not for the defective light board.

The velocity display board isn't missing any bulbs, it's just that the upper left portion of the second digit is permanently lit up. As a result, all pitches that are 93 mph kind of look like 99 (even though the two nines are different, with the second one looking more like a lower case g). So actually Odorizzi was throwing mostly 93 with a few 94s while I was watching. If a pitch is actually thrown 99 (as a few Jeffress pitches were iirc) the two nines would look identical.

AZL Brewers box score

A rehabbing LaTroy Hawkins got the start and allowed a run in two innings, after which Brooks Hall took over. Hall went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Eric Farris was 2-4 with two doubles and Robbie Garvey was 2-3 with a triple. Max Walla was 1-1 with a walk and a HBP, and Tyler Roberts' video-game numbers took a hit with an 0-4 night. Former Brewers draft pick Jemile Weeks, also on a rehab assignment, led off for the A's and went 0-4.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Hall's two walks came to the last two batters he faced. He was relieved by Dexter Bobo, who struggled with his control, walking in the tying run, but managed to stanch the flow of free passes before the A's could take the lead:

The only three hits in the entire Manatee game for Brevard came in their three-run 4th inning. Considering Jeffress' 9th inning difficulty, it's a good thing Dan Merklinger posted zero's for eight innings. Big win for the team on a night when both Erik Komatsu and Sergio Miranda were rested.

Final: Huntsville 13, West Tenn (Mariners) 6

Stars use a huge sixth inning to smash the Diamond Jaxx

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars (13-10, 46-47) scored seven runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 13-6 victory over the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (7-16, 46-46) Saturday night.

The top of the order got things going in the first as Brett Lawrie and Caleb Gindl tallied back-to-back singles against Diamond Jaxx starter Blake Beavan. A Zelous Wheeler fly ball to deep center moved them up 90 feet. After Drew Anderson was hit by a pitch, Chris Nowak picked up an RBI when he grounded in to a fielder’s choice (audio). With runners at the corners and two away, Taylor Green came up large with a two-run double to deep left (audio).

The second inning started just like the first, as the Stars picked up back-to-back singles. This time it was Dayton Buller with a grounder up the gut and Lee Haydel laying down a beauty of a bunt to reach base. A Lawrie groundout moved both runners up a base and Gindl smacked a sacrifice fly to score Buller and advance Haydel to third (audio). Haydel would score on a wild pitch and the Stars had a 5-0 lead (audio).

But West Tennessee being the power-hitting team they are, came back forcefully as Carlos Triunfel drilled a two-run homer off Chris Cody in the third (audio).

In the fourth they continued to chip away as Alex Liddi led-off with a double to left. One out later fellow MLB Futures Game participant Carlos Peguero doubled down the right field line, plating Liddi and cutting the Stars’ lead to two (audio).

Beavan went four innings for West Tenn., giving up five runs on six hits. He struck-out three while walking one.

Huntsville had a golden opportunity in the fifth, loading the bases against former Star (2006 and 2008) Steve Bray with no outs. Chris Nowak hit a fly ball to left that Joe Dunigan caught and gunned to the plate to nail Gindl for the double play. Bray got Green to ground out and the Stars came away empty handed.

Meanwhile Cody was excellent, going 5.2 innings and striking out a season-high nine while walking only one. He gave up three runs, all earned on five hits.

Huntsville got all the insurance they needed and then some in the sixth. With one out, Buller tripled off the glove of a hustling Dunigan, and Haydel followed with a chopper through the right side to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Stars (audio). Lawrie flew to right for the second out of the frame.

Then, the wheels came off for Bray and the Diamond Jaxx. Gindl singled to left, advancing Haydel to second. Wheeler followed with an RBI single, and advanced to second when the throw came in to third in an attempt to get Gindl, which failed as the ball got away from Liddi (audio).

With runners at the corners and two away, West Tenn. decided to intentionally walk Drew Anderson. That didn’t work out so well as Nowak continued his hot hitting with the Stars, drilling a double to left, clearing the bases and making the score 10-3 (audio).

But they weren’t done as Green followed that with a two-run bomb, extending the advantage to 12-3 (audio).

The Diamond Jaxx got one back against Nick Green in the eighth, but Anderson went yard to make the score 13-4 in the bottom of the frame (audio).

Reliever Mark Willinsky gave up a couple of runs in the ninth, but West Tenn. really didn’t have a chance as he finished the 13-6 victory off with Matthew Lawson groundout (audio).

Everyone in the Stars’ lineup tallied a hit and every player with the exception of Chuck Caufield scored a run. Nowak and Green drove in four runs each while Haydel and Gindl tallied three hits apiece.

Cody (5-7) earned the victory while Beavan (0-1) suffered the loss. With the victory, the Stars once again take sole possession of first place in the Southern League North.

Amaury Rivas (8-5, 2.66 ERA) takes the mound Sunday afternoon against Mauricio Robles (6-5, 4.31 ERA) as it’s a battle of Southern League Mid-Season All-Stars. You can hear the action only on www.huntsvillestars.com beginning at 12:45 PM central time with the Window World Pre-Game Report.

Huntsville Box Score

Soft-tossing Chris Cody has only 52 K's in 72.1 innings, but he fooled the Mariners' AA bats here for nine punchouts, as noted; Drew Anderson reached base four times; Caleb Gindl and Lee Haydel seem to be sharing CF duties as of late -- it will be of long-term benefit to Caleb to get some reps there; Taylor Green has his SLG % up to .432, 27 of 65 hits for extra bases...

Huntsville Game Log

Seven is one of the prettiest crooked numbers --

Huntsville Bottom 6th

  • Chuck Caufield pops out to third baseman Alex Liddi in foul territory.
  • Dayton Buller triples (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Leury Bonilla, deflected by left fielder Joseph Dunigan.
  • Lee Haydel singles on a line drive to right fielder Scott Savastano. Dayton Buller scores.
  • Brett Lawrie flies out to right fielder Scott Savastano.
  • Caleb Gindl singles on a line drive to left fielder Joseph Dunigan. Lee Haydel to 2nd.
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to left fielder Joseph Dunigan. Lee Haydel scores. Zelous Wheeler to 2nd on the throw. Caleb Gindl advances to 3rd, on missed catch error by third baseman Alex Liddi, assist to left fielder Joseph Dunigan.
  • Steve Bray intentionally walks Drew T. Anderson.
  • Chris Nowak doubles (10) on a fly ball to left fielder Joseph Dunigan. Caleb Gindl scores. Zelous Wheeler scores. Drew T. Anderson scores.
  • Taylor Green homers (6) on a fly ball to right center field. Chris Nowak scores.
  • Chuck Caufield singles on a line drive to left fielder Joseph Dunigan.
  • Pitcher Change: Luis Munoz replaces Steve Bray.
  • Dayton Buller pops out to first baseman Johan Limonta.

Wisconsin can't hang on against Loons

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - On Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers went toe-to-toe with the team with the best record in baseball. But, the Great Lakes Loons scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Wisconsin 6-5 and run their season record to 61-30. J.T. Wise delivered an RBI double to send the go-ahead run home for the Loons.

The teams traded runs in the third inning. Jaime Ortiz tripled in a run for the Loons in the top of the inning. Kyle Dhanani singled in the tying run with two outs for the Rattlers in the bottom of the third.

Wisconsin's starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi entered Saturday's game with one home run allowed in nearly eighty innings pitched. In the top of the fourth, the Loons got to him for three solo homers. Gorman Erickson started the inning with his second home run of the season. Later in the frame, Angela Songco and Blake Smith hit back-to-back home runs with two out to put Great Lakes up 4-1.

Scooter Gennett and Kentrail Davis started the Rattlers (36-54 overall, 10-12 second half) on the comeback trail in the bottom of the third. Gennett doubled to start the Rattlers' half of the inning. Davis followed with an RBI double. Cutter Dykstra drew a one out walk to put the tying run on base. Chris Dennis went one better than tying the game.

Dennis launched a three-run homer to right-center and Wisconsin was in front 5-4.

Odorizzi settled in after the third inning and retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced without allowing a hit.

Adrian Rosario came out of the bullpen to record a three-up, three-down top of the seventh. Then, the Rattlers turned to closer Jon Pokorny in the eighth inning to go for a two inning save.

Pokorny retired the Loons (61-30, 18-4) in order in the top of the eighth, but ran into trouble in the top of the ninth.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez started the inning with a single, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and stole third. Ortiz singled him home to tie the game 5-5. A wild pitch moved pinch runner Stetson Banks to second base and one out later, Wise doubled in Banks to give the Loons the lead.

Great Lakes closer Luis Vasquez struck out the first two batters of the bottom of the ninth. Then, D'Vontrey Richardson drew a walk and Gennett singled. But Davis grounded out to short for the final out of the game and the Rattlers fell 6-5.

The Wisconsin bullpen has now been charged with 15 blown saves this season. Also, the Rattlers record in games decided by a single run fell to 5-24 after Saturday's game.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Kyle Heckathorn (6-5, 2.65) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Great Lakes will send Josh Wall (6-4, 3.56) to the hill.

Wisconsin Box Score

Well, we know what the main storyline on the Rattler season recap will be, don't we? Close, but no cigar. Closer Jon Pokorny still has the peripherals, but that second inning of work was a killer; Jake Odorizzi had only given up six home runs in his career (over 150 innings) before surrendering three in one inning here; battlekow points out that Chris Dennis sees his first action in the outfield (left field) all season...
