Anyone know why Khris Davis left early?

Anyone know why Khris Davis left early?
Was he hurt? This time of year, any time a player gets yanked for no apparent reason makes me think promotion or traded.

Edit: Appears he was HBP so that may have something to do with it.

Final: @Brevard County 15, Charlotte 7

Brevard County box score

Wow, that's a lot of runs for Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees drew only one walk, committed three errors, and their pitching staff put up a collective 4/6 K/BB, but 18 hits goes a long way. Brock Kjeldgaard isn't having a very good season, but he had a very good night, clobbering two homers and a double while going 4-5, driving in seven, and scoring three runs. Sean Halton also homered as part of his 2-5 night. Shawn Zarraga was 3-5 with a double, and Erik Komatsu was 2-5 with a double. R.J. Seidel bumped it and allowed five runs in four innings.

Brevard County play-by-play

Let's highlight the six-run 7th:

Brevard County Bottom 7th

    scores.
  • Steve Braun grounds out, third baseman Greg Sexton to
    first baseman Michael Sheridan.
  • Matt Cline singles on a line

Final: Mississippi 5, Huntsville 1

Huntsville Boxscore

I took a rare night off from baseball and just finished watching "The Last Samurai" to unwind from a long week at work and I came back to the Link Report ready for action... well so much for that. I wish I had kept track of the amount of 1st inning runs Mark Rogers has allowed this season. Mark got the start tonight going 4.1 IP on 79 pitches (44 strikes), he allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 4. Lucas Luetge pitched 3 scoreless inning of relief, he was awfully good allowing a single hit and walk against 2 strike outs. Eddie Morlan finished the game on the bump allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits, 1 walk, and 1 strike out over 1.2 IP.

No Star had multiple hits or an XBH though Drew Anderson did walk twice. Eddie Morlan committed the only error, leading to his unearned run.

Final: Lansing 6, Wisconsin 4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The

Lansing

Lugnuts took advantage of a run scoring wild pitch and three innings of

scoreless relief from their bullpen to hold off the Wisconsin Timber

Rattlers

Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Lansing

edged the Rattlers 6-4 to defeat Wisconsin and take two out of three

games in

the series between the Midwest League rivals.

Wisconsin (36-53

overall, 10-11

second half) scored quickly in the first inning as they loaded the bases

with

one out. Hunter Morris knocked in

the first run with an RBI grounder. Cutter

Dykstra followed with a two-run triple for a 3-0 lead.

But, Lansing (47-43,

11-10)

rallied for four runs in top of the third to take the lead.

Randy Schimpf tripled in the first run of the frame.

Kenny Wilson followed with an RBI single.

Brad Glenn put the Lugnuts up 4-3 with a two-run double.

The Rattlers even the

score

thanks to an error. Scooter Gennett

reached second on a dropped fly ball to left to start the inning.

Kentrail Davis doubled to left and Gennett scored the tying run.

The Lugnuts had a

runner at

third base with two outs in the top of the fifth inning against

Wisconsin

starting pitcher Damon Krestalude. The

Rattlers right-hander uncorked a wild pitch that let the go ahead run

score.

Wisconsin had an

opportunity to

tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

They had runners at first and third with no outs and Gennett at

the

plate. Gennett sent a sinking liner

to left that was ruled a catch. The

throw to the plate was in time to get the runner heading home for a

double play.

Lansing added an

insurance run

in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ahrens to go up

6-4.

Wisconsin got a two-out

walk in

the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate against

Casey Beck,

but Beck got a strikeout to end the game.

The Rattlers continue

their

homestand by hosting the Great Lakes Loons in a three game series that

starts on

Saturday night at 6:35pm. Jake

Odorizzi (5-1, 2.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.

Elisaul Pimental (8-3, 2.91) is set to start for the Loons.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Damon Krestalude pitched well through the first 2 innings, fell apart in the 3rd, and then uncorked the wild pitch to allow a run to score as mentioned above. Damon gave up 9 hits in his 6 IP allowing the 5 earned runs on on 2 BBs and 6 Ks. Matt Costello pitched 1.1 innings allowing an unearned run, but he was pretty fortunate, especially in the 7th. Flame throwing Santo Manzanillo reigned in his control for a day and pitched 1.2 very solid innings with 3 Ks. The Lugnuts did execute a perfect double steal against Santo which directly contributed to Costello's unearned run.

Kentrail Davis went 2-4 with 2 doubles, Cutter Dykstra added a single to the triple mentioned above to finish 2-4 and also committed his 13th error of the season at 3B.

Brock K's season is mirroring last year in Wisconsin where he was having a hard time getting over .230 until around now. If he and Krieger (someone I really liked after last year) get going, this team could get hot in a hurry.

Final: @AZL Padres 2, AZL Brewers 0

AZL Brewers box score

I keep thinking that Dane Amedee is a "college arm" because he went to LSU-Eunice, which I didn't initially realize was a junior college, but he's really just 19. Amedee put up quite a nice line tonight: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 1 HR. Unfortunately, the Brewers could manage only three hits, handing Amedee the loss. Justin Parker (1-3, HBP) and Joey Paciorek (0-2, BB, HBP) were the only Brewers on base more than one. Playing for the first time since 7/11 Demetrius McKelvie was 0-4 with two strikeouts, clinging tenuously to his below 50% strikeout rate, now 31 in 63 plate appearances. Tyler Roberts and Max Walla did not play.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

The Brewers' best chance to score came in the 1st:

AZL Brewers Top 1st

  • Eric Farris grounds out, first
baseman Joe Agreste to pitcher Mark Hardy.
  • Nick Shaw grounds
out, second baseman Ryan Skube to first baseman Joe Agreste.
  • Kenneth
Allison doubles (3) on a fly ball to right fielder Corey Adamson.
  • Joseph
    Paciorek walks.
  • Justin Parker strikes out swinging.

They didn't put two runners on again until the 9th, when McKelvie came up with two outs representing the go-ahead run:

AZL Brewers Top 9th

  • Nick Shaw grounds out, second baseman Ryan
Skube to first baseman Joe Agreste.
  • Kenneth Allison flies out
    to center fielder Mykal Stokes.
  • Joseph Paciorek hit by pitch.
  • Justin Parker singles on a ground ball to shortstop Paul
    Bingham. Joseph Paciorek to 2nd.
  • With Demetrius McKelvie
batting, wild pitch by Stalyn Valdez, Joseph Paciorek to 3rd.
  • Demetrius
McKelvie pops out to third baseman Bryan Altman.

At least he made contact.

Manatees crush Stone Crabs 15-7

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Brock Kjeldgaard led the way by going 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and seven RBI as the Brevard County Manatees pounded the Charlotte Stone Crabs 15-7 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in front of 1,898 fans.

Six Manatees had at least two hits or more, while four drove in at least two runs. Brevard County (12-9) was 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position and pounded out 18 hits. The Manatees also benefitted from three Charlotte (9-13) errors as the Stone Crabs have committed eight errors so far in the series.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth and the game tied at 5-5, Sergio Miranda started a big inning off with a bunt single. Scott Krieger followed Miranda with a single and then Shawn Zarraga cleared the bases with a double - one of his three hits on the night - down the right-field line to make a 7-5 game.

Stone Crabs starter Frank De Los Santos exited after the Zarraga double and Rayner Oliveros came in and struck out the first batter that he faced, Kjeldgaard, but it was a dropped third strike and catcher Matt Spring's throw sailed over the first baseman's head as Kjeldgaard advanced to second and Zarraga went to third.

A walk by Steve Braun would load the bases, but Brevard County could only manage one more run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Cline to take an 8-5 lead.

The Manatees blew the game wide open in the seventh as Kjeldgaard and Sean Halton each hit three-run bombs to give Brevard County a 14-5 lead.

R.J. Seidel started on the mound for Brevard County and went just four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits, while walking three. Mike Ramlow earned the win in relief as he threw three scoreless innings.

Cline, Erik Komatsu, Halton and Krieger had two hits apiece. Cline and Zarraga also drove in two, while Halton had three RBI.

Brevard County will look to take three of four from the first half champions of the South Division with Saturday's series finale scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Dan Merklinger (3-4, 4.81) will get the start for the Manatees, while the Stone Crabs will send Matthew Moore (4-8, 4.75) to the hill.

Manatees' Kjeldgaard drives in seven

Robert Emrich/Special to MLB.com

A little change went a long way for Brock Kjeldgaard on Friday night.

Kjeldgaard slugged a pair of homers and knocked in a career-high seven runs as the Brevard County Manatees pulled away for a 15-7 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

A 31st-round pick by the Brewers in 2005, Kjeldgaard finished a triple shy of the cycle for the Manatees (12-9), who are in second place in the Florida State League North Division. His previous career best was four RBIs, accomplished most recently on June 10, 2009 for Class A Wisconsin.

The 24-year-old first baseman opened the scoring for Brevard County with an RBI single in the second inning. He smacked a three-run blast in the fourth and another in the seventh before capping his big night with a double in the eighth.

Kjeldgaard had been batting .219 with four RBIs in his previous nine games.

"Just before the game, my hitting coach [Dwayne Hosey] made a few adjustments," he said. "I raised my hands a bit and those pitches that I had been missing the last few days I hit pretty good."

Scott Krieger contributed a pair of hits and scored four times, while Shawn Zarraga was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Kjeldgaard credited the pair for setting the table for him.

"That was big," he said. "It's nice to hit when there are runners on base. It gives you a little more when you know you can drive somebody in. When you're always hitting with guys on base, it sure helps you out."

Reliever Mike Ramlow (1-2) earned the win, yielding two hits and striking out one over three scoreless innings.

"He came in after they scored a few runs and he shut the door," Kjeldgaard said. "At that point, it was a close game. We were kind of going back and forth and then we scored a few more and he shut them down. That's always going to be a good thing."

Former first-round pick Tim Beckham went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Charlotte. Leadoff man Chris Murrill reached base three times and scored twice.

Final: Ogden 5, Helena 3

Brewers swept by Ogden

The Helena Brewers fell for the sixth straight time against the Ogden

Raptors on Friday night at Kindrick Field. In a game that was scoreless

in the sixth inning, the Raptors plated five runs in the final four

frames to go on to win 5-3.

A bright spot for the Brewers tonight was the work of RHP Stosh

Wawrzasek. Wawrzasek, the former 16th round pick in 2008, pitched five

scoreless innings, striking out six and walking two.

Helena's scoring didn't come until the seventh and eighth inning. Greg

Hopkins, who was making his second start since coming back from an

injury against Billings on July 6th, led off the inning with a single up

the middle. He later scored after singles from Mike Walker and John

Dishon.

The Brewers scored two more in the eighth. Gerald Ogrinc and Shea

Vucinich both singled in the inning, and were driven in by a double to

centerfield by Cody Hawn, who leads the Pioneer League in doubles with

13. That was as close as they would get, and the Raptors went on to win

5-4.

The Brewers will try their luck against the Orem Owlz tomorrow night for

the start of a four-game home series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05

with gates opening at 6:00.

Helena Boscscore

Wow what a skid the H-Crew is on, despite excellent starting pitching and a rare clean game defensively they still fell again. Stosh Wawrzasek started and pitched very well, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 6 over 5IP. I just noticed, is that a mullet in his profile picture? Cody Ross saw his first action of the season allowing 2ER on 4 hits and a walk over his 2 innings. Chad Robinson whom I thought had reinjusred his shoulder last week only managed to record 1 out in the 8th before being lifted for Thomas Keeling. Keeling couldn't stop the bleeding, walking in one of Robinson's baserunners. Alex Jones finished the game pitching a perfect 9th with 2 strike outs.

No Brewer had multiple hits, Cody Hawn managed the only XBH, a double, and is OPSing a cool .997 following today's action.

Helena Recap

I really liked Chad Robinson as a draft and follow, this is too bad. Very uneventful game until the 6th.

Final: @Nashville 5, Omaha 4

Koshansky, Sounds walk off with win over Royals

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - First baseman Joe Koshansky' s second home run of the evening, a leadoff blast in the bottom of the tenth inning, propelled the Nashville Sounds to a dramatic 5-4 victory over the first-place Omaha Royals on Friday evening at historic Greer Stadium.

Koshansky's game-winning blast, which came on the first pitch he saw from Royals reliever Blaine Hardy, was the slugger's team-leading 15th of the year and provided Nashville with its 14th last at-bat victory of the season.

The slugger's walkoff heroics became necessary after the Sounds gave up a two-run lead in the ninth.

Nashville (49-43) improved to 5-5 in extra innings on the year while Omaha fell to 7-7 in extra frames.

Koshansky's game-winning homer gave Sounds reliever Donovan Hand (1-0) his first career Triple-A victory. The right-hander worked a scoreless top of the tenth.

Hardy (2-2) took the loss after surrendering the game-ender to cap off his two-plus innings of work for the Royals.

Sounds starting pitcher Chase Wright took a bittersweet no-decision after he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits over seven innings of work, departing with Nashville holding a 4-2 lead. It marked the eighth time in his last 12 outings that the southpaw held the opposition to one earned run or fewer.

With his eighth quality start of the year, Wright lowered his home ERA to a miniscule 1.88 in his eight outings in Music City this season (10er/48.0ip).

The Nashville defense backed Wright by turning a season-high four double plays on the evening.

The game got off to a late start following a 47-minute rain delay.

Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Wright. Kurt Mertins led off with a single to center then scored one batter later when Ed Lucas dropped a sacrifice bunt up the third base line. On the play, Wright overthrew first base to allow Mertins to come all the way around to score in unearned fashion.

Koshansky propelled the home team to a 2-1 lead in the fourth when he belted a two-run homer off the top of the clubhouse building in center field. The blast came against Omaha starter Luis Mendoza. Brendan Katin, who opened the frame with a single up the middle, also scored on the longball.

Adam Stern (2-for-4) increased the Nashville lead to 4-1 in the sixth when his opposite-field, two-out triple to left-center off Mendoza plated Erick Almonte and Ben Johnson.

Royals catcher Manny Pina pulled the visitors back within 4-2 in the seventh with a mammoth solo homer to left-center off Wright that cleared the 80' foot high guitar-shaped scoreboard. The tater was the backstop's second of the year.

Omaha didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, rallying to tie the contest against PCL saves leader Chris Smith.

The Royals loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk. David Lough followed by recovering from an 0-2 count to draw an RBI walk before Alex Gordon lined a game-tying single to right on the first pitch he saw from Smith, knotting the contest at 4-4.

With the sacks still full and none out, Smith - who suffered his third blown save of the year - recovered to retire Kila Ka'ahuie on a popout then struck out Mike Moustakas and Jai Miller in succession to escape the jam without further damage.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. meeting on Saturday night. Right-hander Marty McLeary (2-6, 9.44) will make the start for the Sounds to face Omaha right-hander Philip Humber (4-5, 4.60).

A spectacular fireworks show will follow Saturday's on-field action and hundreds of area Scouts will spend the evening at the ballpark during the team's annual Camp Greer overnight event.

Nashville box score

We always get "historic Greer Stadium", but I like when "guitar-shaped scoreboard" gets worked in too. Congrats to Hand and Koshansky. Entering the season, I bet Mat Gamel (0-4, BB) didn't foresee at least eight guys being promoted from Nashville to Milwaukee ahead of him. Mitch Stetter tossed 0.2 scoreless innings.

Brewers' skid hits six as late rally falls short

By AMBER KUEHN, Helena Independent Record

Reigning Pioneer League pitcher of the week Red Patterson turned in his best outing of the season on paper, but you wouldn’t have known it from talking to him.

The Ogden Raptors starter carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning Friday against the league’s second-best hitting team, a big reason why the Raptors won their sixth straight game and earned their second straight series sweep with a 5-3 victory over the Helena Brewers at Kindrick Field.

Despite Patterson’s strong start and longest outing—he gave up just two hits, an unearned run and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings—the humble right-hander who is 3-0 on the season wasn’t overly pleased.

“I didn’t feel good out there, I actually had a lot of trouble keeping the fastball down, threw a lot of balls,” said Patterson, who walked two.

“Things went the right way, but by no means was that one of my top starts. Great outing ... and yeah, the stats look really good, but from a pitching standpoint there’s still a lot to work on. I got away with a lot of things tonight.”

Helena manager Joe Ayrault was impressed with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 29th-round draft pick.

“He mixed his pitches well, attacked the zone early in the count,” the Brewers skipper said. “I thought a few at-bats early in the game we gave them away, got ourselves out, but tip your hat to that kid, he threw a heck of a game.”

Helena starter Stosh Wawrzasek nearly matched Patterson in the pitcher’s duel, turning in his best performance of the season. It was a scoreless ball game when Wawrzasek left after five innings, in which he had given up just three hits.

The Brewers bullpen self-destructed a bit, with Austin Ross getting tagged with the loss in his first professional appearance. Reliever Chad Robinson returned from an injury that had kept him out since July 1. While Robinson got roughed up in the eighth, Ayrault was just happy his right-hander felt good when he came off the mound.

Helena got hot late, as has become custom for the third-place squad. A night after bringing the tying run to the plate, the Brewers brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth.

After Mike Walker reached on an error by Ogden second baseman Casio Grider, the only miscue of the game, Brandon Sizemore stroked a broken-bat single to center. But strong fielding by the Raptors prevented the Brewers’ rally.

“We talked about being ready when the bell rings,” Ayrault said. “Shoot, maybe we’ll play ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ early in the game, I gotta tell the sound guy up there, to get them rolling right from the get-go. But I would much rather have a team that’s a late-inning team anyway.”

Now, the Brewers find themselves below .500 (12-13) for the first time this season, while Ogden improves to 15-10 and holds a two-and-a-half game lead in the South Division.

“You’re going to have your ups and downs,” Ayrault said. “Hopefully it just bounces back in our court and we get on a hot streak.”
