Nashville Media Notes

25-YEAR SERIES SPLIT: In a pretty amazing feat (and possibly Omaha broadcaster Mark Nasser’s favorite game note ever), the Sounds and Royals have split their 376 all-time regular season meetings dating back to 1985, when the Sounds moved up to the Class AAA level and joined the now-defunct American Association. The clubs are tied at 4-4 in meetings this season and split the previous two season series, 8-8. The Sounds were the last team to win a season series between the rivals, triumphing 9-7 in 2007.

There probably is a slight injury with Huntsville RHP Amaury Rivas that got him placed on the 7-day DL, but this writer who was at the Southern League All-Star Game wrote:

West Tenn's Steven Hensley and Huntsville's Amaury Rivas weren't available because they pitched over the weekend.

So perhaps it was even some creative roster juggling to give Rivas a mini-break.

Scooter "The 5'9 165 pound muscle" Gennett with another long ball! I wonder as he continues to fill out and adds some more muscle to his smaller frame, how many his doubles will turn into homeruns. Didn't expect the second smallest player on the team to be 3rd on the team in HR's only behind two true power hitters (Davis and Dennis). He is just a fun prospect to follow... Few more walks from Del Howell than you'd like but not to bad of an outing. Theilbar had another not so hot outing tonight in the first game.

Final: @DSL Athletics 4, DSL Brewers 3

DSL Brewers box score

The Brewers had only four hits. They got two in the 9th to make it close, but no cigar. Rolando Pascual, pitching for the first time since 7/2, allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings while managing to let slip four wild pitches. The only Brewer to reach base more than once was Yonki Hernandez, 1-4 with a walk. Jose Pena did not play.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Explain this one to me:

DSL Brewers Top 6th

  • Yonki Hernandez strikes out swinging,
catcher Abraham De Leon to first baseman Jose Rosario.
  • Ruben
Sanchez strikes out swinging, catcher Abraham De Leon to first baseman
    Jose Rosario.
  • Jose R. Garcia singles on a fly ball to center
    fielder Jonesy Zarraga.
  • Juan De Leon singles on a fly ball to
center fielder Jonesy Zarraga. Jose R. Garcia scores.
  • Raul
    MondesiJr. called out on strikes.

By the way, Jonesy Zarraga is one of only two other players ever, and the only one active, to share Shawn's last name.

Final: @Brevard County 9, Charlotte 6

Brevard County box score

Despite another lackluster start from Wily Peralta (5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1HBP, 1 K), the Manatees rode six runs late runs to victory. Pete Fatse led off and led off well, going 4-5 with a double. Scott Krieger continues to mash when he makes contact, going 2-3 with a double and a homer and--naturally--a sac bunt. Erik Komatsu also had a sac bunt but was 3-4 otherwise, while Sean Halton was 3-5. Shawn Zarraga was pinch-run for again late in the game. I wonder if he's nursing an injury or just ponderously slow. Brandon Ritchie walked five in

1.2 innings but managed to allow only one run.

Brevard County play-by-play

Peralta's only strikeout came to the first batter in the game. It was knotted at five going into the 8th:

Brevard County Bottom 8th

  • Shawn Zarraga reaches on throwing error by pitcher
    Michael Jarman.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Josh
    Prince replaces Shawn Zarraga.
  • Scott Krieger out on a
sacrifice bunt, pitcher Michael Jarman to first baseman Michael
    Sheridan. Josh Prince to 2nd.
  • With Sean McCraw batting,
Josh Prince steals (31) 3rd base.
  • Sean McCraw walks.
  • Peter
Fatse singles on a ground ball to first baseman Michael Sheridan.
Josh Prince scores. Sean McCraw to 2nd.
  • Juan Sanchez
singles on a line drive to center fielder Christopher Murrill. Sean
McCraw scores. Peter Fatse to 3rd.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a
line drive to left fielder Kyeong Kang. Peter Fatse scores. Juan
    Sanchez to 3rd.
  • Sean Halton grounds into a force out, second
baseman Anthony Scelfo to shortstop Tim Beckham. Juan Sanchez scores.
Erik Komatsu out at 2nd. Sean Halton to 1st.
  • Sergio
Miranda grounds into a force out, third baseman Greg Sexton to second
baseman Anthony Scelfo. Sean Halton out at 2nd.

Final, Game 1 (7 Innings): Wisconsin 7, Lansing 4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Two

days

off didn't cool the bats of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin banged out 13 hits to beat the Lansing Lugnuts in game

one of a

doubleheader on Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field.

Cutter Dykstra drove in three runs to help the Rattlers to their

fourth

consecutive victory.

Scooter Gennett started

the

onslaught in the bottom of the first inning.

The Rattlers second baseman launched a home run, his seventh of

the

season, to center with one out to put the Rattlers (36-51 overall, 10-9

second

half) in front 1-0. Later in the

inning, Dykstra drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single.

Lansing got a run in

the top of

the third inning on an RBI single by Sean Ochinko.

But, that was the only run allowed by Del Howell.

The Wisconsin bats got

that run

back plus two more in the bottom of the third as they strung together

five

straight hits. Kentrail Davis

started the uprising with a double. Khris

Davis followed with a single to put runners at the corners.

Hunter Morris singled to sent Kentrail Davis home.

Dykstra and Chris Dennis continued the hit parade with

back-to-back RBI

singles and Wisconsin was up 6-1.

Howell had a bit of a

hiccup in

the top of the fifth inning as the first two batters of the inning

reached base.

But, the defense turned a neat 6-4-3 double play to get the first

two

outs of the inning. Then, Kentrail

Davis made a fine running catch in right field to end the inning.

Balbino Fuenmayor

homered off

Caleb Thielbar with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to get

Lansing to

within 6-2. But, Kentrail Davis drew

a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to put Wisconsin back up

by five

runs.

Lansing made it

interesting in

the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. Brad Glenn

sent a

deep drive to the wall in left, but Khris Davis had room to make the

catch.

However, a run scored on the sacrifice fly.

AJ Jimenez followed with an RBI single.

The Lugnuts made the score 7-4 and knocked Thielbar out of the

game.

Closer Jon Pokorny came

into

the game and got Kevin Nolan to pop out to short to end the game.

HOME RUNS:

LAN: Balbino Fuenmayor (7th, 0 on in 6th inning,

off Caleb

Thielbar, 2 out)

Wisconsin Boxscore

As disappointing as Arnett's season has been, I've been that happy for Del Howell. I was disappointed to read his velocity is only slightly above average for a lefty, but he's made such vast improvement over the course of the season I'll say I've actually crossed the line and I'm proud of him. Caleb Theilbar has now been scored upon in 6 of his last 7 appearances. D' Vontrey Richardson was 2-4, Scooter Gennett's only hit was the HR, Kentrail Davis was 2-3 with the 2B mentioned above, Cutter Dykstra was 2-3, and Hunter Morris was 2-3. After starting slow Hunter is hitting .308 over his last 10 games.

Wisconsin Recap

It's nice to be on the other side of a crooked number in the 1st. D'Vo... god bless him, continues to make outs on the bases.

Wisconsin Bottom 1st

  • D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a
ground ball to right fielder Brad Glenn.
  • With Ryan Gennett
batting, D' Vontrey Richardson caught stealing 2nd base, catcher A. J.
    Jimenez to shortstop Kevin Nolan.
  • Ryan Gennett homers (7) on

Royals quiet Sounds, 3-1, on Thursday night

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds lost to the division-rival Omaha Royals, 3-1, on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Continuing his dominance against Nashville this season, Gaby Hernandez (7-5) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits while fanning a season-high 11 batters over 6 2/3 innings. Hernandez moved to 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA (1er/19.2ip) in three starts against the Sounds. In 16 starts against the rest of the PCL, he is 4-5 with a 6.65 ERA (69er/90.2ip).

Royals All-Star first baseman Kila Ka'aihue added to his team-leading RBI total, driving home all three Omaha runs on the night.

Nashville falls to 48-43 with the loss, as every member of the Sounds lineup struck out, totaling a season-high 15 times.

Omaha got on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Royals third baseman Alex Gordon smacked a leadoff triple down the first base line into the right field corner to reach base. Ka'aihue followed with an RBI groundout to second base to score Gordon from third for the first score of the game.

The Royals added another run in the next inning for a 2-0 advantage. After Chris Waters retired the first two hitters to begin the frame, Omaha loaded the bases with a single, Joe Koshansky fielding error, and Gordon walk. Ka'aihue then recorded his second RBI of the game by picking up a bases loaded walk to score Ed Lucas from third.

After Gordon was hit by a pitch, Ka'aihue did more damage in the Omaha seventh, as the Royals first baseman smacked a two-out double to score Gordon from first base for a 3-0 deficit.

The Sounds scored their only run in the next frame to cut the lead to 3-1. Nashville designated hitter Erick Almonte doubled to center with two outs to reach base and scored on another doubled from Ray Olmedo.

Nashville began a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, as the first two batters reached base. Koshansky walked to lead off the inning while Almonte reached base on a weak infield grounder to third. With Anderson De La Rosa representing the winning run at the plate, Omaha reliever Josh Rupe retired the next three consecutive batters while fanning De La Rosa to end the ballgame.

In his team-leading ninth quality start, Waters (5-6) picked up the tough loss. The left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over seven innings.

Tim Dillard provided 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief, walking one while striking out two. Mitch Stetter added 1/3 frames and a strikeout.

The Sounds and Royals continue at 7:05 pm CT on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game set. Left-hander Chase Wright (6-5, 3.73) takes the hill for Nashville against right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-7, 4.57).

Be sure to arrive early, as the first 2,000 fans through the turnstiles will receive a premium Sounds hat, thanks to Vanderbilt Sports Medicine.

Nashville box score

The Omaha 2-3-4-5 of Rick Ankiel, Gordon, Ka'aihue, and Mike Moustakas (making his AAA debut) sounds pretty fierce. Lorenzo Cain was 0-3 with a walk, and Mat Gamel was 1-4. Brendan Katin was 1-4 with a double and two strikeouts.

I'm a sucker for a come from behind victory like this one. Mike Fiers wasn't as good this time out going 5 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs, while walking 2 and striking out 3. What a job the relievers did though! Mark Willinsky pitched a scoreless frame breaking his streak of consecutive appearances giving up at least 1 run at 7. Andre Lamontange followed pitching 2 scoreless and getting the W. Jim Henderson finished the game for his 6th save of the season.

Offensively Zelous Wheeler had the only multi hit game going 2-4. Chirs Nowak and Chuckie Caufield had the only XBHs, a big HR and a 2B respectively. Taylor Green committed his 15th error of the season.

Final, Game 2 (7 innings): Lansing 4, Wisconsin 3

Lugnuts hold off Rattlers for a split

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were in good position despite being down 4-2

late in

game two of their doubleheader with the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday night

at Time

Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin loaded

the bases with no outs in bottom of the sixth.

But, Lansing closer Steve Turnbull got out of the jam and went on

to save

the 4-2 win for the Lugnuts to split the twinbill.

The Lugnuts (46-43

overall,

10-10 second half) took the lead without the benefit of a hit in the top

of the

first inning. Kenny Wilson drew a

leadoff walk to start the game. A

balk by Rattlers starting pitcher Nick Bucci moved Wilson to second.

Then, Eric Eiland dropped a sacrifice bunt to get Wilson to

third.

Sean Ochinko got the run home with a sacrifice fly to left.

Lansing added to their

lead in

the top of the fourth inning. Brad

Glenn hit a two-run homer to the scoreboard in left-center and the

Lugnuts went

up 3-0.

Wilson made it 4-0 with

a

two-out, RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Michael Marseco cut

that

four-run deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Rattlers shortstop drove a two-out, two-run triple to

right-center to

get Wisconsin (36-52, 10-10) to within 4-2.

The Rattlers made it

very

interesting in the bottom of the sixth. Lansing

starting pitcher Egan Smith struck out Scooter Gennett to start the

inning, but

a wild pitch allowed Gennett to reach. Kentrail

Davis singled to put runners on first and second.

That was all for Smith as the Lugnuts went to Turnbull.

Khris Davis make things

very

exciting when he reached on an error to load the bases with no outs.

However, Turnbull

quieted the

crowd and the Rattlers rally by striking out the next three batters to

end the

inning and keep the Lugnuts up 4-2.

Lansing's closer

converted

his twentieth save (in 21 opportunities) by setting down the Rattlers in

order

in the bottom of the seventh.

The series concludes on

Friday

night at 7:05pm. Damon Krestalude

(2-4, 5.29) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers.

Dave Sever (2-6, 4.65) is set to start for the Lugnuts.

Friday is a North

Shore Bank Family Night as children 12 and under eat free as part

of

North Shore Bank Family Night in conjunction with momslikeme.com.

It's also Fang's Birthday and the Rattlers are holding a Sweet 16

birthday party for their mascot. Area

mascots will be in attendance to take part in a kickball game before the

game

and all of the festivities during the game.

To get ready for the

upcoming

school year, Fang is asking for donations to a School Supplies drive.

The

supplies that are collected will be distributed to needy school kids in

the

area.

KISS 95.9 FM presents a

post-game fireworks display and - after the fireworks - ThedaCare

Orthopedics presents Kids Run the Bases for children 14 and under.

If you can't make it

It's too bad that while Nick Bucci is starting to straighten out his peripherals he continues to give up runs. Nick almost went a complete game going 6.2, giving up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, walking 3, and striking out 8. The HR he gave up in the 4th proved to be the difference in this one. Matt Costello came in to record the final out. No WI hitter had more than 1 hit though Michael Marseco did triple, his 7th of the season.

Final: Ogden 8, Helena 5

Ogden edges Helena again, Brewers drop fifth straight

The Helena Brewers (12-12) dropped their second straight game to the

Ogden Raptors (14-10), fifth strait overall, in front of a crowd of

1,461 at Kindrick Field Thursday night.

Matt Miller (2-1, 2.86) started on the mound for the Brewers and took

the loss. He threw six innings and allowed four runs, three earned.

Miller struck out three and walked one.

Helena entered the bottom half of the sixth trailing 4-0. After Shea

Vucinich walked, Cody Hawn hit is 12th double of the season. Vucinich

scored on a passed ball, and Hawn scored when Greg Hopkins grounded out

to third.

Ogden answered right back in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs to

widen the deficit back to four runs.

The Brewers scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it a

one-run game. With two outs in the seventh, Carlos George and Franklin

Romero reached on infield singles. Shea Vucinich knocked both in with a

triple to right-center.

John Dishon walked with one out in the eighth inning. Brandon Sizemore

drove him in with a line-double to left field.

That was as close as the Brewers would come to the win. Ogden plated two

more runs in the ninth and went on to win 8-5.

The Brewers look to avoid the sweep tomorrow night at Kindrick Field.

Stosh Wawrzasek (0-1, 5.40) will take the hill for Helena. Red Patterson

(2-0, 4.86) is scheduled to start for Ogden.

Helena Boxscore

Matt Miller started and was okay, working 6 IP, allowing 3 ER, 1BB, while striking out 4 but giving up a costly HR following a walk. If I told you Jimmy Nelson relieved and gave up more runs would you be surprised? I really don't know what to make of him and his uninspiring college career (pitching stats halfway down page).... was he just a 1 year wonder, is he a player on the rise? He did have his first 1,2,3 inning as a pro tonight though. Eric Marzec couldn't pickup Nelson in 9th, the defense didn't do either pitcher any favors. Shea Vucinich was 2-3 with a 3B earning "sleeper prospect" praise for Steve Wendt in the process. Cody Hawn was a 1-5 with a 2B, Brandon Sizemore was 2-4 with a 2B, and Carlos George went 2-4. Greg Hopkins returned after missing 7 games with a concussion and the H-Crew committed 5 errors in the context, some more costly than others.

Final: AZL Brewers 12, @AZL Cubs 6

AZL Brewers box score

Tyler Roberts is really making me feel bad now. He was 3-4 with a homer and a walk today, raising his triple slash line to .453/.525/.755 on the year. There's no one important playing catcher for Helena--promote the kid already. Yeah, so what if he had three(!) passed balls today? He can work on that anywhere. Yadiel Rivera was also 3-4 with a walk. Jason Rogers was 2-3 with two walks, but both hits were singles; the big first baseman surprisingly has only three extra-base hits so far in the hot Arizona air. Max Walla was 1-5 with two strikeouts. Keeping Eric Farris company on the rehab front, LaTroy Hawkins and Bobby Bramhall both turned in scoreless appearances. R.J. Johnson made his pro debut, striking out two in the 9th but allowing a two-run homer.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Walla and Robbie Garvey each doubled a runner off first base.

It's pretty unfair that we tend to point out when Mat Gamel commits errors, yet Taylor Green now has 15 of his own. Had no idea it had snuck up that high.

Rolando Pascual not only uncorked four wild pitches, he plunked three batters. Is he more intimidating with a ball or bat in his hand?

Stars take sole possession of first place

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars (12-9, 45-46) struck-out 15 times, but it didn’t matter as they stormed back to defeat the Mississippi Braves (12-9, 42-47) by a final score of 5-4 Thursday night.

With the win, the Stars take over sole possession of first place in the Southern League North Division.

The Braves got on the board with two in the second inning against Stars’ starter Michael Fiers. With one out, Michael Daniel doubled to left. It’d be the theme of the night as the Braves tallied seven doubles in the game. A ground-out moved him to third and Jesus Sucre doubled him home (audio). Pitcher Brandon Beachy helped his own cause with a double of his own, driving in Sucre to make the score 2-0 (audio).

Speaking of Beachy, he was lights out, tossing five innings, giving up three hits and striking out 13, which is the most K’s any opposing pitcher has accumulated against the Stars this year.

But Huntsville was able to keep things close. In the third, Brett Lawrie led-off with a single to right. One out later, Lawrie swiped second base and advanced to third when Sucre’s throw went into center field. The mistake was costly as Zelous Wheeler hit a routine grounder to short that was enough to score Lawrie and cut the deficit to 2-1 (audio).

Unfortunately for the Stars, Mississippi got some insurance in the fourth. It was Daniel getting things started again, this time with a lead-off double. Donell Linares singled to left to move him to third. Sucre followed with a single of his own, driving in Daniel and making the score 3-1 (audio). With runners on first and second and nobody out, Beachy was unsuccessful with a sacrifice bunt attempt, as the Stars got the lead runner at third base. Luckily for them, Fiers walked Antoan Richardson to load the bases. A Luis Bolivar ground-out to Green at third plated the Braves’ fourth run of the game (audio).

The newest Star struck back for Huntsville in the bottom of the frame. Chris Nowak drilled a solo homer to make the score 4-2 (audio).

Fiers held his own despite his counterpart’s dominance, going five innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on seven hits, walking two and striking out three.

Mississippi’s bullpen proved to be their undoing. Michael Broadway was called upon in the sixth to protect the 4-2 lead. Zelous Wheeler greeted him with a single to left. Drew Anderson grounded out and Wheeler advanced to second on the play. After Nowak walked, Taylor Green came up large with an RBI single to right; Nowak was thrown out at third on the play, but the Stars cut the deficit to 4-3 (audio). With two down, Chuck Caufield drilled a double to center, scoring Green and knotting the game at four (audio).

While Mark Willinsky had no trouble in the sixth inning, the same cannot be said for reliever Andre Lamontagne, who walked a tightrope in his two innings of work. The Braves put runners on the corners with only one out, but he got Michael Daniel to fly into a double play to end the seventh. In the eighth, he gave up a lead-off double, yet three ground-outs later he was out of the inning.

The Stars rewarded Lamontagne’s perseverance with the go-ahead run in the eighth against Braves’ reliever Jaye Chapman. Drew Anderson reached on a lead-off base-on-balls and Nowak hit a grounder that bounced off Chapman’s glove, putting runners on first and second. Green hit into a force-out, and the Stars had runners at the corners with only one away. Unfortunately, Caufield struck-out, leaving it up to Dayton Buller. Buller smacked a sharp grounder up the middle that went off the glove of second baseman Eric Duncan for the Braves’ fourth error of the night. The play scored Anderson from third and the Stars had the go-ahead run without tallying a hit (audio).

Jim Henderson worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the year and Lamontagne (1-0) picked up his first career double-A victory (final out audio).

Huntsville looks for their first series sweep of the year Friday night as they send Mark Rogers (4-6, 3.52 ERA) to the mound. Tune in starting at 6:45 PM Central Time to the Stars Radio Network. First pitch is at 7:00 PM.

Four-run eighth propels BC past Stone Crabs

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 9-6 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The Manatees (38-51 overall, 11-9 second half) were down 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but a one-out single to center field from Sean Halton drove in Peter Fatse and Juan Sanchez to tie the game at 5-5.

Then in the eighth, three straight one-out one-run singles by Fatse, Sanchez and Erik Komatsu gave Brevard County an 8-5 lead. The Manatees would score one more run to make it 9-5.

Brevard County's offense pounded out 14 hits and was 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The Manatees also benefitted from four Charlotte (52-38, 9-12) errors that led to four unearned runs.

Wily Peralta started on the mound for Brevard County and went five innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits, while walking three and striking out one. Trey Watten earned the win in relief as he threw 1 1/3 innings of perfect ball.

Charlotte starter Joe Cruz was solid, but allowed three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits over six innings. Cruz walked just one while striking out six, but the Manatees were able to end the righty's scoreless streak at 23 innings.

Fatse was productive in the lead-off spot, going 4-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Komatsu and Halton had three hits each while driving in two and three runs, respectively. Scott Krieger also had two hits, including a solo-home run off Cruz to lead-off the third inning which marked the first run allowed by the Charlotte starter since his June 24 start against Fort Myers.

Walks were the order of the night from Brevard County pitching, who combined to issue 10 bases on balls in the game. Anthony Scelfo's bases-loaded walk in the ninth brought the Stone Crabs closer, but Corey Frerichs settled down to retire the side and close out the 9-6 Manatees victory.

Brevard County and Charlotte will play the third game of its four-game series on Friday night beginning at 7:05 PM (6:05 Eastern). Set to take the hill for the Manatees on Friday is R.J. Seidel (3-0, 2.59), while the Stone Crabs will counter with Frank De Los Santos (7-4, 4.13).

Raptors slide past Brewers

By AMBER KUEHN, Helena Independent Record

He’s only been in Helena for two days, but Milwaukee Brewers assistant general manager Dan O’Brien already has a pretty good read on his Pioneer League team.

“It’s a little bit early in the (evaluation) process, but it’s pretty clear they don’t give up, they always make a late charge and you can tell that’s partly engrained in their approach,” O’Brien said. “I’ve seen some good pitching ... but we haven’t played as good of defense as I know we’re capable of.”

The Helena Brewers indeed had a rough outing in the field Thursday, registering five errors while dropping their fifth straight, an 8-5 loss to the Ogden Raptors.

Despite the handful of miscues, Helena’s offense came alive late, allowing the home team to threaten in the bottom of the ninth.

After rallying from a four-run deficit for the second straight night, the Brewers had the tying run at the plate in Greg Hopkins, who made his first appearance in the lineup after missing seven games following a concussion. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Hopkins hit a hard shot to center field, but Ogden outfielder Leon Landry was right underneath it for the game-ending out.

Now, a once-hot Helena squad that began the season 8-1 falls to .500 (12-12) for the first time this season.

“To have the tying run at the plate in the ninth is all you can ask for right there,” said Helena skipper Joe Ayrault. “But anytime you make five errors and the other team doesn’t make any, your chances of winning that ball game aren’t very good.”

Ogden struck first as Landry came home on a throwing error by Brewers catcher Brent Dean after stroking a double and then advancing to third on a wild pitch by Helena starter Matt Miller. The right-hander suffered his first loss of the season, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings.

Landry bombed an opposite field, two-run homer in his next at bat, and scored another run in the seventh to give the Raptors an even larger cushion. The Brewers only managed two hits through the first four innings — while making three errors in that time frame — and did not plate any runs until the sixth.

“You know how these guys are, kind of a late-inning hitting ball club,” Ayrault said. (O’Brien told the guys) you’ve got to make sure to come out when the bell rings and get on these guys early.”

Ogden and Helena each finished with 10 hits, but it was the Raptors’ pitching which stood out. Five-foot-11 southpaw Antonio Castillo started for the visitors and earned the win, striking out four and allowing just three hits and one walk through five innings. Shawn Tolleson earned the save for the second straight night, his sixth of the season.

It didn’t hurt that the Raptors backed up that pitching with run support.

“They’ve got some guys that can swing the bat over there,” Ayrault said of Ogden (14-10). “They’re a solid ball club, they played errorless baseball tonight. We can definitely match up with them, we’ve just got to play our game.”

O’Brien is in town for the next four days to have a chance to see every Brewer pitcher throw, and so far he’s liked what he’s seen.

“I think everyone that has gone out there has been as advertised, and so far, has been impressive,” he said. “The bottom line is, you win with pitching and defense and I’m very confident as the season goes on those two will be the strength of this team.”

Ayrault’s not concerned about the attitude of his guys, whether it’s a five-game losing skid or a player is in an 0-for-20 slump.

“Every day you walk through that door it’s a new day,” he said.

The Brewers will try to avoid the sweep tonight, as Helena’s Stosh Wawrzasek gets the nod against Ogden right-hander Red Patterson.

DIAMOND NOTES: Brewers catcher Brent Dean was just 1 for 4 Thursday, but his single in the fifth inning ran his hitting streak to eight straight games. He leads the team in batting with a .395 average...Cody Hawn had cat-like reflexes several times throughout the game, backhanding hard-hit shots for outs at first base...the Brewers had 1,461 in attendance at Kindrick Field.

I would think someone has to look into why the pitchers we drafted high are not producing. This is the Brewers biggest pronlem their inability to develop their own Pitchers. I would think some has to be the fall guy for this problem.
