Scarpetta has worked his way back into my top two favorite pitching prospects (only Odorizzi ahead of him). Another outstanding start! 5IP 2H 0ER 1BB 6K. I'm guessing he is locating is fastball pretty well to set up his dominating curve.

He's having a better season in the same league as Tampa prospect Matt Moore, who is being discussed plenty in the trade forum.

Nice outing by Jeffress too, with 4 more Ks.

3 straight amazing and the one prior was not to shabby outside of one mistake 7IP 5H 3ER 2BB 9K'S.

I am still holding out hope for the Peralta, Scarpetta, Odorizzi, Heckathorn, and Seidel/Anundsen Huntsville rotation next year....but that would mean that Odorizzi and Heckathorn would have to get the promotion they had earned quit some time ago (aka I doubt that they have any plan what so ever to try to get there best pitching prospects through the system with any kind of quickness, rather string it out forever). Just think if we trade with the Rays and DM decided to go with Matt Moore ove Wade Davis.... that could be one of the sickest minor league rotations I have ever witnessed! Well time for me to quit dreaming ha.

Jeffress rebounded nicely with a good 2 innings 2 hits no walks with 4 k's

Alright, Lintz has made it through 3IP cleanly again..... how many more til the wheels fall off and he collapses? He has the old Dave Bush syndrome I think, pitches great all game and then go out for one more inning and just get shelled, hopefully that stops today!

Fredrickson, Adams, Arnett I think go to show that picking college arms is not as much safer than going with a High School arm as people think. All our top pitching prospects outside of Heckathorn are all High School picks or young Latin FA signings (Rivas, Rogers, Peralta, Scarpetta, Odorizzi, Jeffress, Bucci, Lasker, Anundsen, Seidel, Periard, Braddock was a draft and follow so one played one year of college ball.) Hopefully that tread turns around this year with the all the new college arms they brought in

Final: Charlotte 3, @Brevard County 1

Brevard County box score

The game was scoreless until the 10th, when the Stone Crabs got three in the top and the Manatees could only manage one in the bottom. Still, two of the Brewers' best pitching prospects shone, as Cody Scarpetta went five shutout innings, striking out six while walking only one and allowing two hits, while Jeremy Jeffress struck out four in his two scoreless frames, giving up two hits and--best part--walking none. Sean McCraw was a perfect 3-3 with a walk, and Shawn Zarraga was 2-3 before being lifted for a pinch runner in the 7th. Erik Komatsu was 0-5.

Brevard County play-by-play

Both teams squandered opportunities in the 3rd:

Charlotte Top 3rd

  • Michael Sheridan strikes out
    swinging.
  • Matthew Hall doubles (7) on a line drive to left
    fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Christopher Murrill singles on a
line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Matthew Hall to 3rd.
  • With
Tim Beckham batting, Christopher Murrill steals (6) 2nd base.
  • Tim
    Beckham strikes out swinging.
  • Stephen Vogt flies out to left
    fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.

Brevard County Bottom 3rd

Cline hit by pitch. Shawn Zarraga to 3rd. Sean McCraw to 2nd.
  • Erik

The Manatees did again in the 7th:

  • Shawn
Zarraga singles on a ground ball to center fielder Isaias Velasquez.
  • Offensive
Substitution: Pinch runner Peter Fatse replaces Shawn Zarraga.

  • With Matt Cline batting, Josh
    Prince steals (30) 2nd base.
  • Matt Cline grounds out, third
baseman Greg Sexton to first baseman Michael Sheridan.

...and, perhaps most punishingly, again in the 9th. Josh Prince just needed to put it in play to win the game but couldn't:

Brevard County Bottom 9th

  • Scott Krieger singles on a line
drive to right fielder Reid Fronk.
  • Peter Fatse ground bunts
into a force out, pitcher Zachary Quate to shortstop Tim Beckham.
Scott Krieger out at 2nd. Peter Fatse to 1st.

Final: @Huntsville 9, Mississippi 5

Huntsville box score

Josh Butler started and was decent: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 K. His sinker was sinking, as his 8/2 GO/AO attests. He threw 96 pitches, only 51 for strikes--hence the four walks. The Stars picked up him up with a big five-run 5th inning, though, and rode that to victory. Taylor Green had a big day, 2-4 with a two-out three-run homer in that 5th inning and a sac fly. Zelous Wheeler and Steffan Wilson were both 2-3 with two walks. Brett Lawrie was 1-5 and committed his 15th error. Caleb Gindl didn't start but pinch hit in the 7th and struck out.

Huntsville play-by-play

Wow, the Stars scored all five runs in the 5th with two outs and were a wild pitch away from going down in order:

Huntsville Bottom 5th

  • Josh Butler pops out to second
    baseman Eric Duncan.
  • Brett Lawrie flies out to right fielder
    Willie Cabrera.
  • Lee Haydel strikes out swinging. Wild pitch
by pitcher Tim Gustafson. Lee Haydel to 1st.
  • With Zelous
Wheeler batting, wild pitch by Tim Gustafson, Lee Haydel to 2nd.
  • Zelous
Wheeler singles on a fly ball to left fielder Michael Daniel. Lee
Haydel scores. Zelous Wheeler to 2nd on the throw.
  • Drew T.
Anderson singles on a line drive to center fielder Antoan Richardson.
Zelous Wheeler scores. Drew T. Anderson to 2nd on the throw.
  • Steffan
    Wilson walks.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Taylor Green
homers (5) on a fly ball to right center field. Drew T. Anderson
    scores. Steffan Wilson scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Richard
Sullivan replaces Tim Gustafson, batting 9th.
  • Anderson Machado walks.
  • Dayton Buller
grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Alejandro Machado.
    Anderson Machado out at 2nd.

Final: Ogden 6, @Helena 5

Helena box score

Evan Frederickson started and, unsurprisingly, struggled with his control: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1HBP, 0 K. Hey, no wild pitches though! Kind of surprisingly, Seth Lintz managed to then pitch three innings without allowing a walk or, relatedly, a run. He lost some steam in his fourth inning of work, issuing his first free pass and allowing a run, but hey, baby steps. Tony Butler took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the 8th. Brian Garman deserves mention for striking out the last four Raptors to bat. Brent Dean was 3-4, Carlos George was 2-3 with a walk, Johnny Dishon was 2-5 with a double, and Cody Hawn was 1-4 with a walk. You know you've been going well when getting on twice in five trips lowers your on-base percentage. Dishon's former outfield mate at LSU, Leon Landry, started in center field for Ogden.

Helena play-by-play

Lintz's first three innings:

Ogden Top 4th

  • Casio Grider strikes out swinging.
  • Leon
Landry grounds out to first baseman Cody Hawn.
  • Jake Lemmerman
singles on a line drive to left fielder John Bivens.
  • Michael
    Pericht strikes out swinging.

Ogden Top 5th

  • Jonathan
Garcia reaches on fielding error by shortstop Carlos George.
  • Robert
Coyle flies out to left fielder John Bivens.
  • Pedro Guerrero
flies into double play, center fielder Franklin Romero to first baseman
Cody Hawn. Chance Gilmore doubled off 1st.

Ogden Top 6th

  • Chris
Henderson flies out to left fielder John Bivens.
  • Pedro
Tavarez grounds out, third baseman Michael Walker to first baseman Cody
    Hawn.
  • Casio Grider pops out to first baseman Cody Hawn.

'Tees edged by Charlotte in 10 innings

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - After taking two of three from the Tampa Yankees on the road this past weekend, the Brevard County Manatees came home to Space Coast Stadium to open up a four-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Zeroes dominated the scoreboard for nine innings and the Stone Crabs finally broke the tie with three runs in the tenth as the Manatees fell 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Cody Scarpetta started for the Manatees and continued his dominance of opposing hitters as he went five scoreless innings and extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 21. He struck out six and allowed just two hits on the night.

Daniel Meadows relieved Scarpetta and threw two scoreless innings and then Jeremy Jeffress threw two scoreless innings of his own, while striking out four.

But Charlotte starter Nick Barnese was just as good as Scarpetta as he threw six scoreless innings and allowed four hits, while striking out seven.

The Manatees had a runner in scoring position in the third, fifth, seventh and ninth innings and could not push a run across. Brevard County had a chance to win it in the ninth with runners on the corners and one out, but Josh Prince struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch low and away in the dirt. Then Matt Cline struck out looking on a close 3-2 pitch. Cline was then ejected from the game by home plate umpire Luke Hamilton for arguing the call.

Ruben Flores took the mound for the top of the tenth and the Stone Crabs had runners on first and second with two outs, when Christopher Murrill singled to center to score Jake Jefferies to plate the first run of the game. Murrill took second on Erik Komatsu's throw home to put runners at second and third and with Tim Beckham hitting, Flores threw a wild pitch that allowed Anthony Scelfo to score and then Murrill scored as catcher Sean McCraw tried to throw out Murrill at third.

Two batters later, Flores would get out of the inning, but the damage had been done as Charlotte took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the tenth.

The Manatees wouldn't go down without a fight though as Sean Halton got things going with a one-out single. After a Sergio Miranda strikeout, Brock Kjeldgaard singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Scott Krieger would then do the same to drive in Halton and finally put Brevard County on the scoreboard. Peter Fatse, representing the winning run, would fly out to shallow center field to end the game.

Brevard County's pitching staff struck out 11 Charlotte hitters in the loss, but the Manatees struggled at the plate, leaving 13 runners on base.

McCraw was a perfect 3-for-3 on the night with a walk. Krieger and Shawn Zarraga also had two hits each, with Krieger driving in the lone Brevard County run.

The Manatees and the Stone Crabs will continue their four-game series on Thursday night beginning at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central) at Space Coast Stadium.

Brewers’ losing skid hits four

By AMBER KUEHN Helena Independent Record

Helena Brewers manager Joe Ayrault isn’t one to make excuses.

He likes to preach aggressiveness on the bases, hopes guys learn from their mistakes and understands that not every comeback is going to result in a one-run game in his team’s favor.

But boy, would he like to have this one back.

Ogden Raptors shortstop Jake Lemmerman stroked a two-out RBI double that one-hopped the wall in center field to break up a 5-all tie in the eighth and give Ogden the 6-5 win.

The Brewers lost their fourth straight, their longest losing skid of the season.

But in a game where Helena still pounded out 11 hits and scored four unanswered runs to tie the game, it was less-than-perfect baserunning and a couple of calls that didn’t bounce the Brewers' way that could have been the difference.

“We have to do the little things,” Ayrault said. “We had some mistakes on the bases, little things that we could have easily turned it around and won that ball game.”

After the Raptors roughed up Helena starter Evan Frederickson for four runs in the first two innings, Helena mounted a comeback thanks to Brandon Sizemore’s second-inning solo shot over the left-center field wall and timely singles by Cody Hawn, John Dishon and Carlos George in the fifth frame.

But shortly after the Brewers took their first lead of the game in the sixth on George’s RBI single, Franklin Romero Jr. appeared to have a solid sacrifice fly to left to score John Bivens from third. Home plate umpire Alex Ransom said Bivens left base early, taking the run away for an inning-ending out and causing plenty of commotion from the Brewers’ dugout.

“I’m not the kind of guy that blames the umpire for making the call, but it’s one of those things, I feel very confident that he was on the base and scored on an easy sacrifice fly,” said Ayrault, who also argued that a catcher’s interference call was missed an inning later.

“None of us really saw it but it’s one of those calls,” said hitting coach Ned Yost. “It was hit to deep left center, so there’s no need to rush, especially with Bivens, he’s quick. But then again I didn’t see it. I asked him (if he left early), he said that he didn’t.”

Still, there were plenty of bright spots in the game for the 12-11 Brewers, who still trail Great Falls by just one game in the Pioneer League North standings. Helena got its best outing so far from right-hander Seth Lintz, who made his first relief appearance.

In 3 2/3 innings, Lintz gave up just three hits, one earned run and struck out three.

“That’s the best I’ve seen Lintz throw the ball,” Ayrault said.

Overall, the pitching was what the Helena staff had hoped to see. Moving Frederickson from the bullpen to the starting rotation was the right move, Ayrault believed, even if the end numbers didn’t show it. And closer Brian Garman struck out all four batters he faced.

“Frederickson did a really nice job there, he could have got out of the inning with a zero,” Ayrault said, noting that a few broken-bat singles early on resulted in a little tough luck for the southpaw.

Another bright spot for the home team was the bat of Brent Dean. The Helena catcher went 3 for 4 to push his average to .412. Lemmerman, meanwhile, led the Raptors (13-10) at the plate in a 3-for-4 performance of his own.

“He’s really turned it around,” Yost said of Dean. “He’s really just slowed himself down at the plate... he’s finally starting to realize he doesn’t have to swing hard to hit it hard.”

Even with the recent skid, Yost has no doubt that the Brewers will get back to their winning ways soon.

“We’re swinging the bats well; no matter how many runs we’re down by I always feel confident we’re going to come back,” he said. “It’s one or two little things here or there that will put us over the top. We’re close, one-run games, we’ve just got to keep after it.”

Stars surge into a tie for firstBy Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Taylor Green smacked a three-run homer and the Huntsville Stars (11-9, 44-46) scored five runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 9-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves (12-8, 42-46) Wednesday night.

The win gives Huntsville a share of first place in the north division with the Carolina Mudcats. It’s the first time all year the Stars have been on top of the standings.

Huntsville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first against Braves’ starter Tom Gustafson. With one away, Lee Haydel doubled down the right field line. After Zelous Wheeler walked, Gustafson got the second out of the inning by striking out Drew Anderson. But his wildness hurt him when he proceeded to also walk Steffan Wilson. With Green at the plate, a passed ball allowed Haydel to score from third (audio).

Mississippi took advantage of some sloppy defense to take the lead in the third against Stars’ starter Josh Butler. Jesus Sucre blooped a single to shallow center. Two outs later, Butler issued a free pass to Alejandro Machado. After a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, Eric Duncan hit a slow chopper to second base. Brett Lawrie charged hard, but had a hard time getting the ball out of his glove. He airmailed the rushed throw, allowing two runs to score as the Braves went up 2-1 (audio). A Mauro Gomez RBI double down the line gave them a 3-1 edge (audio).

All three runs were unearned and Butler was excellent again, going 5.2 innings giving up four hits and striking out five while walking four. It’s his third straight start without surrendering an earned run.

The Stars’ big fifth inning started innocently enough with two straight outs. Gustafson struck-out Haydel swinging, but the pitch was wild and Haydel hustled to first safely. A wild pitch advanced him to second and Zelous Wheeler drove him in with a single to left. On the throw to the plate, Wheeler moved to second base (audio). He’d score on a Drew Anderson RBI single and the game was tied (audio).

After Steffan Wilson walked, Green unloaded on an off-speed pitch for his fifth homer of the year (audio).

The 6-3 lead was more than enough for the Stars’ pitching staff, but just for good measure the Stars tacked on one in the seventh thanks to a Donell Linares error on a grounder off the bat of Dayton Buller that scored Wilson from third (audio).

In the eighth, a RBI single from Wilson (audio) and a Green sacrifice fly (audio) extended the lead to 9-3.

That’s how the game would end as Eddie Morlan, Nick Green, and Robert Hinton combined to toss 3.1 shutout innings in relief of Butler (3-4) who picked up the win (final out audio). The game marks the end of the Braves’ seven-game winning streak.
