Milwaukee East Side Internet / Cable

monkeyman343434

I have a question for those of you living on the east side of Milwaukee. I'm moving into a new apartment August 1st and I'm having a hard time trying to decide where I should go to for cable and internet service. I don't really like the offer Time Warner has with their bundle package, as $90 for a decent package seems steep? Also, it seems like every place for a good cable package wants to lock you into a 2 year commitment, which I highly doubt I'll be living in this apartment for more than just the year lease. I see Directv is offering half off the first year in a 2 year commitment, would I be able to move that to another location if I move, or would it have to stay at the address I'm moving in to? Does anyone know what kind of cancellation fees they would charge if i discontinued it after a year? Any info on this would be extremely appreciated! Thanks!

After looking more, I'm thinking about the $35/month offer from TWC for internet and going with the $30/month offer from Directv and hope it works out with the 2 year deal.
Does anyone have any pros or cons on any of these services or would recommend one over the other?

I have DirectTV but I would also look in to Uverse. I had Uverse with my roomates and it was great, but had DirectTV for 5 years before that.

As to your questions about DTV. They pro-rated your cancellation fee at least about 3 years ago. The break fee was $175 I think and we broke it with 5 months left on a 2 year contract, so we paid roughly 20% of that $175. Also you can move for free, but they will make you sign a new contract. I never cared about that because I was so happy with DTV. Their customer service was always outstanding.

I used Time Warner for Internet and never had a problem, so I think your idea is a good one.

look out for the $35 a month offer from Time Warner. If it's the same one that I got from broadbandoffers.com, they're going to give you a $90 dollar modem for "free" with a mail-in rebate. The modem wasn't actually compatible (I use the standard free one that Time Warner provides instead) and the rebate process is kind of complicated and easy to screw up. I got my rebate after many months, but I read many statements from people online saying that they didn't get theirs. So beware. I was still happy with my Time Warner service, but frustrated with that particular offer.

I have UVerse and prefer it to TWC. The only downside is that I don't get the Time Warner Sports channel or MLB Network. Other than that, the price is better than TWC and the service (reception and customer service) has been better.

Is Uverse a dish or cable?

I lived on the east side of Milwaukee about a year and a half ago and Uverse wasn't available. Maybe it's changed but I'd look into that before you waste your time looking at their packages. Also, is this new apartment you're moving into going to allow you to get a satellite dish?

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses!

Paul - I believe there is a dish on the house already (it's more of a flat than an actual apartment building) but I haven't looked too close to make sure it is or isn't, or if it's even on the place I'm moving in to. Thanks for reminding me to check with the manager before if I do decide to go that route.

theavrock - Thanks for the info on dtv! I think I might be leaning towards doing the directv route and figuring out what to do about it when the time comes to move out and then going with the TWC internet connection.

As far as I can tell, Uverse still isn't available in the area I'm moving into - a couple blocks off of Brady St.

That's odd. I had Uverse when I lived on Lyon and Astor during September 2008

No problem. Happy to help with info on DTV

UVerse is very dependent on having new (fiber) phone lines installed to the nearest node within the last 10 or so years.... also, it really helps to have new copper lines put in recently as well. Anything older than that, and it cannot carry the data required to broadcast, so it's (sadly) still very specific into which buildings and areas can have it.

I live on Cambridge between North and Brady and we have DirecTV and use AT&T for our internet.

It's a little wonky with AT&T to have their internet but not phone. Until recently they haven't been prepared for the eventuality and require you to enter your phone number when you call. We don't have a home phone, so we had to jump through some hoops. That being said, we've had excellent customer service from them, including next day help and a Saturday appointment when we had a service problem (modem died. They replaced it for free and re-set us up on a Saturday)

Love DirecTV - love having MLB, NHL, NFL Networks and love Sunday ticket during the football season.
