Ex-Star Corey Hart now All-Star ... and a star of Home Run Derby

Mark McCarter, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, AL. -- Corey Hart lifted himself from a name barely known outside the baseball world into the mainstream on Monday night when he socked 13 homers in the first round of the Home Run Derby in Anaheim, part of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities.

Hart, a Milwaukee Brewers outfielder, will be in the starting lineup in tonight's All-Star Game.

All that got me thinking about the accompanying photo, one of the most memorable pictures I've been involved with at The Times.

Corey Hart, left, Dave Krynzel, bottom, J.J. Hardy, top, in 2003 photo of Huntsville Stars prospects

http://media.al.com/huntsville-times-sports/photo/coreyjpg-726830079146add9_large.jpg

In 2003, Hart was part of a trio of rising young stars in the Milwaukee system, along with J.J. Hardy and Dave Krynzel. Hart and Krynzel were 21, Hardy just 20.

Thinking of them as kids, we decided to pose them on a wooden swing set in the small playground behind the left field stands at Joe Davis Stadium for a photo that would lead our season-opening coverage.

Then they started acting like kids.

They began trying to see how high they could swing. The photographer kept clicking away.

Then came a sound much louder than a camera's click.

It was a crack. The wood in the swing set broke.

Happily, there were no casualties. It would not be an easy thing to explain to Milwaukee management that the three brightest prospects in the system had broken legs in a swing set accident caused by a newspaper photograph. We wound up posing them, as you see, on a different piece of playground equipment.

With no small amount of trepidation, I called Bryan Dingo, then the Stars' general manager and said, "Um, The Times owes you a swing set. Send me a bill."

Thankfully, the company that built the set replaced it, figuring that if three major league prospects could do that much damage, imagine what a gaggle of eight-year-olds might do.

I'm glad to see Hart have so much success. He was always an unassuming, nice guy. I wrote a lot about him in 2003, when he was named the Southern League MVP. When I've gone to Brewers games through the years, he's one of the first guys to stop by and say hello if I'm loitering in the dugout or clubhouse before the game.

It didn't surprise me the other day when I was talking to Sandy Guerrero, the former Stars' coach, who was going to pitch to Hart during the Home Run Derby.

"Corey's nervous," Guerrero said.

He didn't show it in the first part of the Derby. Looked just as calm as he did on a swing set seven years ago.

Final: @DSL Cardinals 4, DSL Brewers 2

DSL Brewers box score

Juan Francisco, the newest pitcher on the team, made his first start and went five shutout innings, but Leonard Lorenzo allowed two runs in the 7th and Jose Cepeda let in two more in the 8th. Carlos Pena and Ruben Sanchez, each 2-4, were the only Brewers with multiple hits. Yonki Hernandez was on three times on the strength of a single, a walk, and a HBP. Jose Pena was 1-4 with three strikeouts. The green light was on all day, as they stole five bases and were thrown out three times (twice on pickoffs). Sanchez and Pena both threw a runner out at third.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Getting picked off third is an interesting way to kill a rally:

DSL Brewers Top 4th

  • Ronny Puello grounds out, third
baseman Jose Agustin to first baseman Rafael Medina.
  • Jose Pena
singles on a ground ball to center fielder Victor Encanacion.
  • With
Jose R. Garcia batting, wild pitch by Victor De Leon, Jose Pena to
    2nd.
  • Jose R. Garcia strikes out swinging.
  • Carlos
Pena singles on a ground ball to center fielder Victor Encanacion.
    Jose Pena scores.
  • Andres Martinez singles on a ground ball to
shortstop Robelys Reyes. Carlos Pena to 3rd.
  • With Yonki
Hernandez batting, Andres Martinez steals (11) 2nd base.
  • With
Yonki Hernandez batting, Carlos Pena picked off and caught stealing
home, catcher Fernando Baez to shortstop Robelys Reyes to catcher
    Fernando Baez.

Something about the AZL Reds. That's two horrific outings by Arnett against the Baby Reds. Something is very wrong with him, as a 1st round college pitcher should not be still struggling against rookie league hitters, even if some are college draft picks. Heck - he was dominating college hitters last year.

Final: AZL Brewers 9, @AZL Reds 8

AZL Brewers box score

Quite a comeback by the Maryvale Crew--they scored five runs in the top of the 9th to pull out the win. That news, however, is probably overshadowed by a dismal performance from Eric Arnett: 3 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 1 HR. I know I cautioned that his AZL performance might be meaningless--for all I know, they're having him throw all changeups or something--but come on. T.J. Mittelstaedt led the offense with a 3-4 performance; Yadiel Rivera, Kenny Allison, Joey Paciorek, and Robbie Garvey all had two hits. Tyler Roberts was 1-5 and committed his third passed ball. Eric Farris started again and went 0-3 before being relieved at second base by Derrick Shaw, who saw his first non-outfield action and went 1-1 with a walk. Max Walla did not play.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Wow, huge two-run error by the opposing third baseman with two outs in the 9th:

AZL Brewers Top 9th

  • Thomas Mittelstaedt singles on a
line drive to left fielder Jaren Matthews.
  • Robert Garvey
singles on a line drive to right fielder Juan Silva. Thomas
    Mittelstaedt to 2nd.
  • Derrick Shaw singles on a line drive to
center fielder Drew Poulk. Thomas Mittelstaedt scores. Robert
    Garvey to 2nd.
  • Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to
shortstop Samuel Diaz. Robert Garvey to 3rd. Derrick Shaw to 2nd.
  • Kenneth Allison singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jaren
Matthews. Robert Garvey scores. Derrick Shaw scores. Yadiel
    Rivera to 2nd.
  • Tyler Roberts flies out to right fielder Juan
    Silva. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd.
  • Jason Rogers strikes out
    swinging.
  • Joseph Paciorek reaches on fielding error by third
baseman Danny Hernandez. Yadiel Rivera scores. Kenneth Allison
    scores. Joseph Paciorek to 3rd.
  • Justin Parker flies out to
    right fielder Juan Silva.
