Final: @Tampa 3, Brevard County 2

Brevard County box score

Things looked pretty good entering the 8th, with the Manatees holding a 2-0 lead on the strength of a Scott Krieger two-run homer and Jeremy Jeffress entering the game. Unfortunately, Jeffress faltered, allowing two runs (one earned) while walking four and loosing two wild pitches. He only allowed one hit and struck out two, so the stuff is fine--it's just his old control demons rearing their ugly heads. Brandon Ritchie picked up the

loss, allowing a run in the bottom of the 10th. This spoiled a fine start from Dan Merklinger, who went six shutout innings, allowing seven hits and no walks and fanning six. Krieger was 3-4 with the homer, and Matt Cline was 1-3 with two walks. Erik Komatsu did not play.

Khris Davis's days in A ball have to be coming to an end here soon, especially being a college player.

Ya, him and Odorizzi can ride together to their next destination. Awesome to see these guys dominate. Is Jake becoming another Gallardo?

Sounds drop series finale in Memphis, 5-1

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis starting pitcher P.J. Walters used both his arm and his bat to propel the Redbirds to a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park in the finale of a five-game series.

Walters (3-2) tossed a quality start, holding the Sounds to one run on seven hits with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings, and the right-hander delivered a go-ahead, three-run double from the batter's box to lead Memphis to the win.

The defeat, which snapped a three-game win streak for the Sounds, was the last of 16 contests between the division rivals in 2010. Nashville (48-42), which took three of five from the Redbirds this weekend, won the season series by a 9-7 margin.

Sounds first baseman Joe Koshansky gave the visitors an early advantage when he led off the second inning with his team-leading 13th longball of the year, a solo shot to right-center off Walters.

Memphis rallied to take a 4-1 lead with a four-run outburst against a pair of Nashville hurlers in the bottom of the sixth.

Allen Craig and Joe Mather led off the frame with consecutive singles off Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren. After Bryan Anderson grounded into a force play that eliminated Craig from the basepaths and Nashville catcher Anderson De La Rosa picked Mather off second, Kevin Howard blooped a single to shallow center to put runners on the corners and chase Lofgren from the contest.

Right-hander Donovan Hand was summoned from the bullpen to make his career Triple-A debut for the Sounds and was promptly tagged with a blown save as he was greeted by Donovan Solano's game-tying RBI single to left, which made it a 1-1 contest.

Hand extended the inning with a mistake of his own when he mishandled Aaron Luna's lightly-hit comebacker; the error allowed the Redbirds to load the bases. Walters helped his own cause in a big way when he stepped into the box and hit a sinking liner to center that glanced off the glove of a diving Lorenzo Cain, plating three unearned runs on a play ruled as a double for the Memphis hurler.

Howard tacked on an insurance run for Memphis in the eighth when he greeted Sounds reliever Chris Smith by hammering the right-hander's 1-0 offering over the right-center wall. The blast was the infielder's fifth round tripper of the year and upped the Redbirds' lead to 5-1.

Fernando Salas worked the final two frames in scoreless fashion for Memphis to nail down his 16th save of the season.

Lofgren (7-5) was saddled with a tough-luck loss for the Sounds after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking a pair of batters and striking out four in his 5 2/3 innings of work.

Cain extended his hit streak to seven games with a fifth-inning double. The outfielder enters the break with a .368 average (14-for-38) in his nine games played for Nashville.

Adam Stern had his season-best seven-game hit streak halted for the Sounds with a pinch-hit flyout in the seventh. The outfielder enjoyed a 6-for-9 series against the 'Birds and enters the All-Star break batting .545 (12-for-22) in his last eight games.

After taking the next three days off for the Triple-A All-Star break, the Sounds return to action on Thursday night at Greer Stadium, when they welcome the division-rival Omaha Royals to Music City for the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series.

Left-hander Chris Waters (5-5, 3.55) will man the bump for the Sounds in Thursday's series opener to face Omaha right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-7, 4.57).

A pair of Sounds players will compete in Wednesday night's Triple-A All-Star Game in Lehigh Valley, Pa. Shortstop Luis Cruz and right-handed pitcher Mike McClendon will serve as reserves for the Pacific Coast League stars in the 6:05 p.m. CT contest, which will be broadcast live on MLB Network as well as 104.5 FM "The Zone."

Nashville box score

Mat Gamel was 2-4 (with two strikeouts), the only Sound with multiple hits.

Hopefully Heckathorn gets a seat right next to them on that ride as well. Odorizzi is on fire right now and I have been kind of wanting the Brewers to hold off on a promotion for him until he was not just pitching very well but dominating and he has absolutely done that over his last 4 starts!

Last 4 Starts:

3-0 W/L 25 IP 22H 1ER 3BB 32K 1.00 WHIP 0.36 ERA

That is just unreal and the true definition of dominating!

Also who here would have ever though entering the season that Scotter Gennet would be 3rd on the team in homeruns and 2nd in slugging percentage not to mention top 3 in the Midwest League in runs, hits, doubles, total bases, and batting average. Have to believe if Trout wasn't in the league Ryan would be consider the top canidate for League MVP. Only two things that make this season even stronger for him is if he took a few more walks and snagged a few more bases. (T-Rats are actually just about the worse baserunning team in the MWL 4th from last in steals and 2nd most caught stealings)

Jeffress was less than impressive to day with 4 BB and 2 WP

Final: Wisconsin 4, Burlington 1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Jake

Odorizzi and Khris Davis continued their domination of the Burlington Bees.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers duo led the team to a 4-1 victory over the

Bees Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

Odorizzi, the starting pitcher, tossed seven shutout innings and struck

out nine. Davis hit a pair of home

runs in his three hits against the Bees.

Scooter Gennett put the

Rattlers (8-9 second half, 34-51 overall) in front with a two-run homer in the

bottom of the first inning against Burlington starter Tyler Sample.

That was more than enough for Odorizzi.

The Rattlers right-hander

worked around a leadoff walk in the second and a leadoff double in the fifth to

protect that 2-0 lead.

Davis hit his first homer of

the game to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.

He drilled the first pitch of the at bat versus reliever Sam Runion into

the Burlington bullpen past the wall in left-center and the Rattlers were up

3-0.

The Bees (8-8, 30-55)

threatened in the seventh against Odorizzi.

Burlington loaded the bases on a walk, a single, and another single.

Odorizzi got out of the jam with his ninth strikeout of the game and a

fly out to right.

In the eighth inning against

reliever Caleb Thielbar, Carlo Testa homered off the

foul pole in right field to get the Bees to within 3-1.

Davis answered with one out in

the bottom of the eighth. He lined a

2-1 pitch from Scott Kelley just over the wall in left field and the Rattlers

were up 4-1. Davis, who is the first

Rattler with a multi-homer game this season, has 15 home runs in 2010.

Thielbar walked the leadoff

batter in the top of the ninth, but retired the next three batters to nail down

the win and his third save of the season.

Odorizzi is 3-0 in four starts

against the Bees this season. He has

allowed one run and struck out 35 in 25 innings in those four starts against

Burlington.

Davis has hit six of his 15

home runs against the Bees in 2010. In

15 games against the Bees this season, Davis is 26-for-59 (.440) with 14 RBI.

The Timber Rattlers and Bees

wrap up their series Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

Kyle Heckathorn (6-5, 2.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for

Wisconsin. Keaton Hayenga (1-6,

8.23) is set to go for Burlington. Game

time is 12:05pm.

If you can't make it out to

the game, you may tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM.

The Miller Lite Pregame Show starts at 11:45am.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Jack Odorizzi was fantastic but I'm going to take a contrary opinion to the ones already offered in this thread. Odorizzi is gong to get skipped at least one more time this season, he doesn't have enough IP built up. Instead I'd rather see Kyle Heckathorn and Khris Davis catch that plane together, 2 college players who should be on the fast track given their age. Odorizzi's final line was 7IP, 4H, 0R, 2BB, and 9Ks. Caleb Thielbar pitched the final 2 innings continuing his recent string of appearances allowing a run, this time on a HR, but he did pick up his 3rd save of the season.

On the offensive side of things D' Vontrey Richardson had a big day going 3-4 with a triple but continues to make outs on the bases, he's just so raw yet. Scooter Gennett went 2-4 with a HR, but Khris Davis was the story here again today going 3-4 with 2 HRs! The Timber Rattlers also played a rare clean game defensively.

Final: Billings 9, Helena 4

Helena Boxscore

Tyler Cravy started and wasn't sharp, but he deserved a better fate in the 3rd. Tyler went 2.1 IP, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks, 8 runs, 6 earned, against 2 strike outs. Tony Butler had his best outing for the H-Crew going 2.2 IP giving up 1H, 1BB, and he struck out 2. Thomas Keeling finished the game and Steve had nice things to say about him, apparently Thomas is just very raw as a pitcher. He went 3 IP, gave up a run without allowing a hit on 3 walks and striking out 4. Offensively Shea Vucinich was 2-4 and Brent Dean was 2-3.. Reggie Keen was hit by a pitch square on the top of his left hand during the 9th and had to exit the game, hopefully he's OK. The Brewers were horrible defensively, particularly in the 3rd, and had 4 errors on the evening, though Carlos George had a fantastic diving play and flip from the seat of his pants to end the 1st.

Final: AZL Brewers 6, @AZL Rangers 2

AZL Brewers box score

As I noted above, LHP Bobby Bramhall, very fresh off Tommy John surgery in November, pitched the first inning. It's great to see him back. He allowed two runs, both unearned. After that, it was the Jose Oviedo show: he worked the next seven innings, striking out ten while allowing only two hits, a walk, and a hit batter. Seth Harvey struck out the side around two hits in the 9th. Okay, the folk-hero act is back on for Tyler Roberts, who, no doubt punishing me for leaving him off my Power 50 ballot, went 3-5 with two doubles and a homer. Roberts is now hitting a silly .465/.540/.767 in his first eleven games this year. Max Walla was 0-2 with two walks.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

The Brewers' four-run 3rd:

AZL Brewers Top 3rd

  • Justin Parker walks.
  • With Thomas

Tyler Roberts to 3rd. Justin Parker to 2nd.
  • With Thomas
Mittelstaedt batting, wild pitch by Carlos Melo, Tyler Roberts scores.
    Justin Parker to 3rd.
  • Thomas Mittelstaedt walks.
  • With

this has to be the biggest P50 shakeup ever. First, you get all the draft pickings coming aboard. Then, some of our top prospects have incredibly tanked (Salome, Gamel, Arnett). Finally, you get some former top prospects start to shine (Rogers, Jeffress, Dykstra). It's gonna get pretty crazy.

As for Odorizzi, I think he ends up around #3. Lucroy has done nothing to lose his spot and Lawrie is finally starting to shine. I don't see any reason to have anyone jump those 2 yet, much less a guy in A ball. Braddock has slightly underwhelmed me at the MLB level, so I can see those two swapping.

I'm thinking:

1 Lucroy

2 Lawrie (but maybe #1?)

3 Odorizzi

4 Braddock

5 Cain

6 Axford

7 Jeffress

8 Gamel

9 Peralta

10 Rivas

11 Heckathorn

12 Covey

13 Gennett

14 Rogers

Full game article from Billings is here, Brewer portiosn excerpted below:

***

The Mustangs will send right-hander Daniel Tuttle to the mound Monday. Tuttle is 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA. Helena will counter with Hiram Burgos (2-0, 3.52), who threw seven dominant innings in a win against Billings on July 2. Burgos allowed one run on four hits, struck out eight and didn’t allow a walk in that game.

Timber Rattlers report: Wisconsin 4, Burlington 1

Appleton Post-Crescent

The Rattlers got what every team wants, good pitching and good hitting.

The pitching came from starter Jake Odorizzi, who moved his record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.86 with a four-hit performance over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

"I've been having some pretty good outings lately," said Odorizzi. "The team has been helping me a lot and what's not to be confident about when you've got that? You feel good on the mound and know your defense is going to play good behind you.

"I felt like I could throw any pitch for a strike on any count. I just credit the bullpen work and working on the changeup a lot. (Pitching coach Chris) Hook helps me a lot in the bullpen and being precise with it and that's what I'm trying to do out there, be precise.''

Offensively, the Rattlers hit three homers, one by Scooter Gennett and two by Khris Davis, the first Rattler to have a multi-homer game this season.

Davis has 15 homers on the year, six shy of the team record shared by Juan Silvestre (1999) and Matt Hagen (2003).

"I don't know, this game is weird,'' Davis said of the home run mark. "You're never guaranteed any more. Got to enjoy them while you can.''

Davis went three-for-four on the day to raise his average to .303.

"Just trying to get better with the swing, have a better approach, always trying to get good pitches to hit,'' said Davis. "Some days you get mistakes and some days you don't get mistakes. As for being in the zone on a daily basis, I could say I feel pretty comfortable right now and pretty confident.''

He certainly has been against the Bees. On the season, Davis is 26-for-59 (.440) with 14 RBI in 15 games.
