Karstens hit Ryan with a pitch in April 2009. Ryan assumed it was intentional and spoke his mind about it.

 

There was talk at the time that the Pirates were still incensed that Ryan hit that grand slam off PIT in September 2008 and had the audacity to be happy about it.

 

I thought back to the 2009 incident last night as GoGo was HBP, and wondered why they'd plunk him, as he wasn't even in the organization in 2008.

 

Anyway, go Brewers. Isn't their record OK in Cerveceros games?

I may be forgetting something, but this was the sequence of events that played out last season:

 

- In a game in April, Ryan Braun homered off Karstens

- Karstens drills Braun between the shoulder blades in his next AB, the Brewers know it's intentional but don't retaliate when Karstens comes up to hit the next inning.

- Braun knows it's intentional, vows vengeance in post game interviews (even saying something to the effect of "Tell Mr. Selig to pay attention")

- The Brewers hit multiple Pirates batters the next day.

- In July, Karstens gets hit by a pitch while batting against the Brewers.

- Karstens starts screaming at the pitcher who hit him (I forget who at this point), Jason Kendall steps in, and Pirates pitching coach Dave Kerrigan takes offense to Kendall getting involved.

- Kendall has to be physically restrained from going after Kerrigan.

- Kendall repeatedly (and intentionally) calls Kerrigan "Dave Kerwin" in postgame interviews.

 

Fun times.

This is how Braun celebrated after hitting that HR off of Karstens. Excessive? I guess it depends what team you cheer for.

Also, the pitcher who beaned Karstens was Chris Smith.

FYI, Travis Wood of the Reds perfect through 7 against the Phils. Halladay on the other side. 0-0. Funny thing is that dynamic ESPN Gameday odd-machine had the Phils favored to win despite being whitewashed coming into the 8th. Reds now have runner on 3rd with 1 out.
