Nashville's divisional standings have been ridiculous for weeks -- last team standing wins, for sure; nice to see Huntsville and Brevard County relevant standings-wise; if only the Rattlers could win an occasional close game; Helena and Maryvale can't celebrate quite yet...

Final: Nashville 5, @Memphis 1

Narron, Sounds Shut Down Redbirds, 5-1

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sam Narron held the Redbirds to one run over eight innings as the Nashville Sounds topped the Memphis Redbirds 5-1 on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park in the fourth game of a five-game series.

Nashville (48-41) won its third straight game after posting 10 hits for the third consecutive contest. Lorenzo Cain extended his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-4 performance while catcher Ben Johnson also added three hits in the Nashville victory.

Throwing a quality start for the fifth time in his six starts this season for Nashville, Narron (4-3) scattered 10 hits while walking none and striking out five in eight innings pitched to earn the win.

The Sounds took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame as leadoff hitter Adam Stern doubled to center field to begin the contest, with outfielder Cain singling in the next at-bat to reach base. During the Erick Almonte at-bat, Stern scored from third as Memphis catcher Matt Pagnozzi overthrew second base on the Cain swipe. Almonte then smacked a line drive single to center to drive Cain home from second for the second run of the inning.

The Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the third as Aaron Luna tripled to center to begin the inning. The next batter David Kopp singled home Luna to reduce the Nashville lead to 2-1.

Sounds shortstop Luis Cruz continued to stay hot for the Sounds in the Nashville seventh, as the PCL All-Star jacked a one-out double to left field and moved to third on a Pagnozzi passed ball. After Johnny Raburn walked, Memphis reliever Renyal Pinto came into the game to replace David Kopp and surrendered an RBI base knock to Johnson. With two outs, Pinto walked Narron to load the bases, and then walked Cain to bring home another run for a 4-1 advantage.

Nashville tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning for a 5-1 lead. Johnson doubled to right field for his third hit of the game, and later scored on a Cain two-out RBI double.

Brandon Kintzler finished the game with a perfect ninth while striking out one.

Kopp (4-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

The Sounds and Redbirds will play the afternoon finale of a five-game series at 1:35 pm CT at AutoZone Park on Sunday before beginning the three-day Triple-A All-Star Break. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (7-4, 4.94) will start for Nashville against Memphis righty P.J. Walters (2-2, 3.21).

Nashville Sounds box score

Cain is hungry. I would imagine Kintzler's belly is rumbling a bit, as well. Mat Gamel didn't start but pinch hit and struck out.

Nashville Sounds play-by-play

After reaching base all five times up yesterday in his first action as a new father, Stern reached in his first three plate appearances today as well.

Final: Brevard County 5, @Tampa 4 (11 innings)

Brevard County box score

No, seriously, someone should be broadcasting this stuff! The Manatees scored four in the 8th to tie the game and won it in the 11th. Wily Peralta's kinda weird season continued: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 10/3 GO/AO. I really expected him to be a lot more dominant this year. Hopefully the stuff will shine through eventually. Buddy Flores and Dan Meadows turned in solid, shutout relief work, with Flores striking out six in his 2.1 innings and Meadows working the last two frames to pick up the win. Sean Halton clobbered (probably exaggerating--I imagine most FSL homers are wall-scrapers) a two-out three-run homer as part of his 2-5 night. Josh Prince and Matt Cline were also 2-5, each with a single and a double.

Brevard County play-by-play

The two relevant innings:

Brevard County Top 8th

  • Scott Krieger strikes out
    swinging.
  • Peter Fatse singles on a bunt ground ball to second
    baseman Corban Joseph.
  • Josh Prince hits a ground-rule double
    (11) on a fly ball to right field. Peter Fatse to 3rd.
  • Matt
Cline singles on a ground ball to left fielder Raymond Kruml. Peter
Fatse scores. Josh Prince to 3rd.
  • Erik Komatsu grounds out,
pitcher Adam Olbrychowski to first baseman Myron Leslie. Matt Cline
    to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Pat Venditte replaces Adam
    Olbrychowski.
  • Sean Halton homers (7) on a fly ball to left
field. Josh Prince scores. Matt Cline scores.
  • Sergio
    Miranda called out on strikes.

Brevard County Top 11th

  • Pitcher
Change: Noel Castillo replaces Pat Venditte.
  • Erik Komatsu
    strikes out swinging.
  • Sean Halton singles on a line drive to
    right fielder Zoilo Almonte.
  • Sergio Miranda singles on a
ground ball to second baseman Corban Joseph. Sean Halton to 2nd.
  • Brock
Kjeldgaard flies out to right fielder Zoilo Almonte. Sean Halton to
    3rd.
  • Sean McCraw singles on a line drive to left fielder
Raymond Kruml. Sean Halton scores. Sergio Miranda to 2nd.
  • With
Scott Krieger batting, wild pitch by Noel Castillo, Sergio Miranda to
    3rd. Sean McCraw to 2nd.
  • Scott Krieger strikes out
    swinging.

Bookended by Scott Krieger swinging strikeouts--nice symmetry, sea cows.

The T-Rats game was a good one tonight (2-1 Rats on a bases loaded balk in the 3rd or 4th inning). Krestalude, although he was effective, does not look like he will cut it at levels higher than A ball. He only hit 88 on the gun once that I saw and was sitting mainly at 84-85 on the stadium gun all night. He and Garfield kept the hitters off balance with their changes of speeds but a more polished line-up would seemingly feast on those 84 mph bp fastballs. Nieves was a whole different story though. While he looks like he will dislocate his elbow/shoulder on every pitch (at least from our angle...1st baseline next to the press box) he over-matched the Bees for his entire outing (4 2/3). His FB was consistently in the 87-89 range and touched 90 a couple of times. His change/breaking ball really had the Bees coming out of their shoes though. They could not wait back for it no matter how hard they tried and it was comical to watch at times. This was the 2nd time that I have seen him pitch this year and he has really been impressive both times. The offense was pretty blah this evening though DeVo showed that once he learns the strike zone a little better he could be lethal at the top of the line-up. Speed, speed and more speed. He swiped 2nd on a pitch that bounced in front of the plate. It didn't roll away...just bounced. As soon as it touched dirt he was going 100% to 2nd. While I'm sure there are guys that are faster than him in the system his zero to flying is very quick. Good game to be at after the rain delay.

Final: Wisconsin 2, Burlington 1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers returned home from a 2-7 road trip in need of some

wins. The team responded to the

return to the friendly confines of Time Warner Cable Field with a 2-1 win over

the Burlington Bees on Saturday night. Efrain

Nieves pitched 4-2/3 scoreless innings of relief after the Rattlers scratched

out a pair of runs to erase an early deficit.

Burlington (30-54 overall, 8-7

second half) took the lead with one out in the top of the first inning.

Deivy Batista tripled. Carlo

Testa followed with a triple and the Bees were up 1-0. That would be about all

the Burlington offense could manage in the game.

Wisconsin (33-51, 7-9)

manufactured a couple of runs in the third inning to take the lead.

D'Vontrey Richardson reached on a fielder's choice.

He stole second and went to third on a grounder to the right side.

Scooter Gennett delivered a two-out RBI single to send Richardson across

the plate with the tying run.

The Rattlers weren't done

against Burlington starter Dusty Odenbach. Khris

Davis was hit by a pitch and Hunter Morris drew a walk to load the bases for

Chris Dennis.

Odenbach made it an

anticlimactic at bat for one of the Midwest League leaders in RBI.

The Bees pitcher committed a balk to send Gennett home with the go ahead

run. The Wisconsin pitchers took

over from that point.

Rattlers starting pitcher Damon

Krestalude pitched four innings and gave up just one more hit after the

consecutive triples in the first inning. Nieves

came on in the fifth and retired nine of the first ten batters he faced.

Nieves also worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth.

A leadoff single in the top of

the ninth inning was followed by a double play.

But, with two outs, Jose Bonilla singled to chase Nieves.

Closer Jon Pokorny came on to

get Fernando Cruz to pop out to end the game and pick up his sixth save of the

season.

Game two of the series with the

Bees is Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. Jake

Odorizzi (4-1, 3.14) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.

Tyler Sample (3-5, 3.97) is set to start for the Bees.

Milwaukee Brewers legend Cecil

Cooper will be on hand for a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan.

He will throw out a first pitch and be available for autographs before

the game. Timber Rattlers players

will wear jerseys inspired by the 1982 Brewers.

Sunday is Strike Out Cancer

Day, too. One dollar for every

ticket sold on Sunday will go to area charities that fight cancer.

Please follow this link for more information on Strike

Out Cancer[/i] Day.

If you can't make it out to

Time Warner Cable Field, you may tune in to the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM

starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm.

WP: Efrain Nieves (3-3)

LP: Dusty Odenbach (4-6)

SAVE: Jon Pokorny (6)

TIME: 2:28

ATTN: 4,721

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well i fell asleep waiting for the game to start, so I missed one of the better pitching performances of the season. Damon Krestalude was more effective in his 2nd appearance off the DL, and Efrain Nieves turned what I believe to be his best outing of the season. As you may have guessed from the story and the score there wasn't much offense in this game, Cutter Dykstra was 1-3 with a 2B and Chris Dennis went 2-4.

Wisconsin Recap

Good pitching usually means a pretty boring play by play.

Final (game two): DSL Mariners 5, @DSL Brewers 2 (7 innings)

DSL Brewers box score

Joel Dicent started and got roughed up a bit, allowed four runs in 4.1 innings. 16-year-old Venezuelan Osmel Perez, my favorite Brewer farmhand, tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Very little going on on offense. Juan De Leon was 1-2 with a walk, and Jose R. Garcia and Andres Martinez were each 1-3. Hitaniel Arias was 0-3, and Jose Pena did not play.

Final: @AZL Brewers 9, AZL Dodgers 4

AZL Brewers box score

19-year-old Venezuelan Francisco Rivero allowed four runs in four innings; nevertheless, Rivero deserves to be commended for his precocious 19/3 K/BB so far, racked up in 22 innings of work. Skyler Crawford and Jose Sanchez teamed up to shut out the Diaper Dodgers for the rest of the game. Jason Rogers, Joey Paciorek, Kenny Allison, Max Walla, and Nick Shaw all had two hits for the Maryvale Crew, with Rogers, Paciorek, and Shaw each adding a walk as well. Walla tripled, just his fourth extra-base hit of the year. Demetrius McKelvie doubled but also struck out twice--that's 27 in 55 plate appearances, which is kind of amazing. Tyler Roberts' folk-hero status took a hit with an 0-5 line.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Not sure why, but Justin Parker replaced Rogers at first base in the 9th; Rogers didn't bat in the preceding half inning. Do you sub for defense with a five-run lead?

Final, 11 Inniings: Billings 5, Helena 4

Helena Boxscore

Stosh Wawrzasek retired the first 8 batters he faced cruising through 3, however the 4th inning wasn't kind to him. Stosh went 3.2 IP allowing 4 hits, 3 earned runs, and he struck out 3. Eric Marzec pitched the next 2.1, he's yet to allow an earned run this season. Tony Bulter pitched an inning and allowed a run without giving up a hit on 2 walks to start the 8th, but only because Brian Garman walked the bases loaded and then walked in the tying run. Garman did manage to double his season strike out total over his 3IP striking out 8! Rob Currie took the loss and a soft sinker liner that the outfielder John Bivens made a diving attempt at to extend the game but couldn't come up with.

Offensively Cody Hawn was 2-6 with 2 doubles, Reggie Keen was 1-5 with a 2B, Shea Vucinich was 2-5 with a 2B, Mike Walker was 2-4 with a 2B, John Dishon was 2-4, and finally Gerald Ogrinc was 2-5. Carlos George continues to be a butcher in the field committing his 7th error in Helena so far this season.

I don't know if it is a matter of struggling the second time through the lineup or tiring or just a small sample size fluke, but Wawrzasek (if my math is correct) has a 1.50 ERA with a WHIP of 1 in the first three innings of his outings but an ERA of 15.43 and a WHIP of 2.57 in any additional innings.

The DSL Mariners took advantage of the Allixon Cequea new-to-catching experiment in that Game Two. First start behind the plate -- six stolen bases in the seven inning game, none of the double steal variety, off of three different pitchers teamed with Cequea, and he committed two errors on throws.

It'll be a great story if he ever makes the big leagues behind the plate, kind of like Rattlers' pitcher Santo Manzanillo's 47 walks in 16.1 Maryvale innings in 2006. OK, I guess nothing tops that.

Lookouts Fall Out Of First Place In 7-3 Loss To Stars

Huntsville defeated Chattanooga Saturday night, 7-3, while taking 3-out-of-4 games in the series; Carolina (11-8) takes over the top spot in the SL North division from the Lookouts 10-9).

The Chattanoogan

Huntsville got off to an early lead by plating two runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Taylor Green and an Anderson Machado RBI single off Lookouts’ starter Chris Withrow.

Withrow left the game after one inning and was replaced by Tim Sexton.

Zelous Wheeler hit a solo shot in the top of the third for Huntsville, but the Lookouts would counter with three runs in the bottom portion of the inning. Trayvon Robinson and Ramon Nivar set the stage by leading off with singles.

After a Jerry Sands walk to load the bases, Corey Smith hit a hard grounder to second baseman Wheeler, who then attempted to start a double play, but shortstop Anderson Machado was unable to field the toss cleanly.

When the dust settled, the Lookouts found themselves back in the game with two runs.

The Lookouts eventually tied the score on a Jaime Pedroza ground ball with the bases loaded, which ultimately resulted in a double play to end the inning, but not before Sands was able to cross the plate.

The Stars broke the tie in the fifth by scoring two runs, highlighted by a Drew Anderson RBI single.

Wheeler struck again in the ninth with a two-run double to increase Huntsville’s lead, 7-3.

Andre Lamontagne shut the door on the Lookouts over the final two innings, earning his first save of the season.

Robert Hinton (3-2) picked up the win for the Stars in a relief appearance. In four innings, he yielded just one hit against five strikeouts.

Sexton (3-9), who pitched six innings out of the bullpen, took the loss for the Lookouts. He surrendered three runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out three.
