A site, In between hops.com ranks the Brewers defense as the worst in the majors with only CF being above average. Another site Hardball Times ranks some minor league players on D. Gives good marks to Cain and Taylor Green but D is not exactly a strength of Gamel or Lawrie. You figure Escobar will be better next year and they should be o.k. in CF but how do you improve the other positions?

I have suggested elsewhere moving Hart back to first base, as his height gives him a big edge at helping coral wild throws, which is a common weakness of the other infielders, if you make Gamel your third basemen. The biggest problem with that is that you'd still need to identify a way to improve RF, and Gamel while not hitting poorly also isn't forcing his way up. It's also unclear how long it would take Corey to get used to playing 1st again or what his range would be (though presumably better than Fielders)

Trading Fielder and acquiring at least a league average defensive 1B would help.

And Weeks is appropriately named when it comes to his "D" at 2B.

I would put Ryan Braun at first base. Just shut down his arm, all he has to do is catch. Corey's D isnt great, obviously, but he might be serviceable in left.

Gamel at 1st. Good range... good glove... as someone posted about braun... shut down his arm.

 

I can deal with Braun in Left. I can deal with Casey at 3rd. Weeks Prince and Hart are going to be expensive and they aren't good defensively. Deal them out for some value when a good offer presents itself.

 

The whole problem is the organizational montra. We keep getting so invested in players at that plate. We don't get our pitching right and to back that up we don't bring in players with plus D other than Gomez. (who can be a bit of a loney)

 

We are all about clubbing the long ball. We need to look at the twins and change our stance on baseball as a whole. We have been in a far better financial position to them... and yet they are far superior to us.

I don't think that's true. His agent and the Brewers just value Hart differently, and his agent clearly read the arbitration process correctly.

Well, what's a realistic contract for Hart then? 5 years, $40 million or so? I just don't know if it makes sense for this team to allocate that much to a right fielder at this point.
