A LONG NIGHT: The Sounds played 20 innings of baseball (7 hours and 54 minutes of game time) last night during a doubleheader in Oklahoma City, dropping both games. The 13-inning, 4-hour-and-15-minute nightcap was Nashville’s longest contest of the season, both in terms of innings and time of game. Following the on-field action, the Sounds bussed 7 1/2 hours to Memphis.

Scarpetta twirling a 1 hit 1bb 9k gem through 6 inning so far. ERA is has finally made an appearence in in the 3.00's! Over the last 3 or 4 games he has really turned it on and his control has been much improved...hope it continues!

Final: Chattanooga 11, Huntsville 2

Huntsville Boxscore

Another day, another first inning crooked number against one of our starting pitchers. Michael Bowman went 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on the bookends, pushing his season ERA over 6. My boy Michael only gave up 6 his, but he gave up 7 walks, struck out 3, and allowed a HR. Mark Willinsky followed and was hit hard in both innings he pitched, allowing the last 5, maybe a bit of a sacrificial lamb here. No Star had multiple hits, Dayton Buller did have a double.

Scarpetta K's 11 in BC's 6-1 win over Jays

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA - Brevard County starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings as the Manatees topped the Dunedin Blue Jays 6-1 on Thursday night in Viera.

Scarpetta retired the side in four separate innings and at one point retired 11 in a row from the fourth inning to the seventh. He walked just one batter and threw 109 pitches - 72 for strikes.

The Manatees would give Scarpetta all the run support he would need in the fourth inning. Already up 1-0 on a solo homer by Scott Krieger in the second, Brevard County scored three in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.

The inning started with a lead-off double by Sean Halton to left field. Two batters later, Brock Kjeldgaard singled to drive in Halton. Krieger then singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Sean McCraw then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both Kjeldgaard and Krieger over.

Franklin Romero then came up with the big blow - a two-out two-run double to center - to make it 4-0 Brevard County.

The Manatees scored two more times as McCraw drove in Kjeldgaard with a RBI single in the sixth and Sergio Miranda drove in Matt Cline on a sacrifice fly.

Daniel Meadows worked a scoreless eighth in relief of Scarpetta and Jeremy Jeffress pitched the ninth and allowed the only Dunedin run of the game, which was unearned.

Kjeldgaard led the way at the dish for Brevard County going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Prince and Krieger also had two hits each.

The Manatees will go for a sweep of the Blue Jays on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.

Sounds blanked by Redbirds in series opener

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Four Memphis pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout of the Nashville Sounds in the Redbirds' 3-0 victory on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series.

Memphis pitchers retired 18 of the final 19 Nashville batters in the contest, including the last 10 in a row.

Nashville's final hit of the night came when Joe Koshansky led off the fourth inning with a double. After that hit, Koshansky was the lone Sounds player to reach base the rest of the way when he was hit by a pitch in the sixth.

The shutout defeat was the sixth suffered by Nashville (45-41), which dropped its third straight road contest.

Right-hander Chuckie Fick (2-0) made a spot start for Memphis and hurled five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five Nashville batters to earn the victory.

The Memphis bullpen closed out the game with four hitless innings. Rich Rundles followed Fick with a scoreless frame, Josh Kinney put up two goose eggs, and Fernando Salas notched his 15th save of the year by retiring the Sounds in order in the ninth.

The four Redbirds hurlers combined to strike out 11 Nashville batters. The Sounds had a few chances to score early in the contest but finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Overshadowed by the collective Memphis shutout was another outstanding performance by Nashville left-hander Chase Wright, who took a hard-luck loss for the visitors.

Wright (6-5) continued his recent dominance on the hill, allowing one run on four hits over his six frames of action. It marked the seventh time his last 11 trips to the hill that he held the opposition to one earned run or less. The effort was the southpaw's seventh quality start of the season.

The teams combined for just eight total hits on the evening. No player on either club registered a multiple-hit effort in the contest.

Memphis plated the contest's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mark Shorey led off with a single against Wright and scored later in the frame on a James Rapoport sacrifice fly.

The Redbirds increased the lead against ineffective Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett in the seventh. The right-hander threw just one strike among his 19 pitches in the frame, walking four batters. The last free pass, to Rapoport, pushed home Donovan Solano.

David Johnson inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam and allowed one additional run to score on a Ruben Gotay fielder's choice groundout, increasing the Memphis lead to 3-0.

Sounds outfielder Brendan Katin extended his longest streak of the year to seven games with a first-inning single.

The teams continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader on Friday that will make up a May 17th rainout. Right-hander Marty McLeary (2-6, 10.38) will start the opener for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Lance Lynn (6-6, 5.42). Right-hander Tim Dillard (1-4, 4.99) will make his second start of the year for Nashville in the nightcap against a yet-to-be-announced Redbirds hurler.

Nashville box score

Jeff Bennett has been really, really ineffective in his second Brewers career. Mat Gamel and Lorenzo Cain were each 1-4.

Quite a night for Khris Davis and the Timber Rattlers' offense.
I wonder if he and Gennett will get a cup of coffee with Brevard at some point this year? One would think so.

Final: Wisconsin 13, Beloit 5

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - Khris Davis led

the way for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday night at Pohlman Field.

The All-Star left fielder went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBI pace

Wisconsin to a 13-5 victory over the Beloit Snappers.

The Rattlers banged out 18 hits and Nick Bucci allowed three runs over

seven innings for his fourth win of the season.

Wisconsin (32-50 overall, 6-8

second half) grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the first inning.

Davis drove in Cutter Dykstra with a two-out double.

The Rattlers' bats

immediately went to work in the top of the second.

Chris Dennis singled on the first pitch.

Two pitches later Michael Marseco tripled to send Dennis home.

Austin Stockfisch blooped in the very next pitch for an RBI single and

the Rattlers were up 3-0 four pitches into the second.

D'Vontrey Richardson would knock in Stockfisch later in the inning with

another RBI single.

Davis struck again in the top

of the third inning. He lined a

two-run homer over the wall in right-center for a 6-0 lead.

The long ball was the thirteenth of the season for Davis.

Wisconsin had two on with one

out in the top of the fourth and Davis stepped to the plate again.

He delivered a two-run double to right field and the Rattlers were up

8-0.

The Snappers (43-40, 6-8) broke

through in the bottom of the fourth inning against Bucci.

Yorby Martinez doubled for the first hit of the game for Beloit.

James Beresford followed with a triple to score Martinez.

Beresford scored on a wild pitch. Bucci

retired the next two batters, but a hit batsman put a runner aboard.

Anderson Hildago made Bucci pay with an RBI double to cut the Wisconsin

lead to five runs.

The Rattlers offense answered

back with help from the Beloit defense in the top of the fifth.

Marseco reached on an error and was at second after a one out walk to

Erik Miller. Richardson's grounder

to third went through the legs of Hidalgo and Marseco scored.

Later in the inning, Dykstra singled in the tenth run of the game for

Wisconsin.

Gennett and Davis singled with

one out in the top of the eighth inning. Morris

followed with a double to drive in Gennett.

Davis scored on a wild pitch. Then,

Dennis picked up an RBI with a single to right that scored Morris for a 13-3

lead.

Bucci exited after seven

innings. He allowed three runs on

four hits and was in line for his fourth win of the season.

Beloit got a pair of unearned

runs of Santo Manzanillo in the bottom of the eighth. But, the Snappers would

get no closer.

The final game of Wisconsin's

nine-game road trip is Friday night at Pohlman Field.

Maverick Lasker (5-3, 3.29) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the

Timber Rattlers. Beloit has Miguel

Munoz (6-5, 5.40) as their scheduled starter.

Game time is 7:00pm. You can

tune in for the broadcast on AM1280 WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame

Show at 6:40pm.

HOME RUN:

WIS: Khris Davis (13th, 1 on in 3rd inning, off Michael

Tonkin, 0 out)

WP:

Nick Bucci (4-3)

LP: Michael Tonkin (2-6)

TIME: 2:54

ATTN: 807

Wisconsin Boxscore

Nick Bucci's final line...7 innings, allowing 3 ER on only 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Santo Manzanillo relieved and wasn't helped all by the defense in the 8th, but Santo is just extremely inconsistent right now. Scooter Gennett (2-5) extended his hit streak to 14 games, who would have guessed that 2 of last year's high school draftees would lead the league in batting average (Mike Trout is the league leader hitting over .360)? Not only did Khris Davis have a monster day at the plate, he also made a diving catch in the Beloit bullpen during the 8th inning. As noted Kris was 4-5 including 2 doubles and his 13th HR of the season... what a stud he's been. Hunter Morris is heating up, he was 3-5 with 2 doubles. Cutter Dykstra was 2-5, Chris Dennis was 2-5, and Michael Marseco was 2-5 with the triple noted in the summary.

Wisconsin Recap

One of the more pleasurable recaps of the season, here is Bucci's 4th...

Beloit Bottom 4th

  • Yorby Martinez doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Erik Miller.
  • James Beresford triples (4) on a line drive to left fielder Khristopher Davis. Yorby Martinez scores.
  • Derek McCallum lines out to third baseman Cutter Dykstra.
  • With Josmil Pinto batting, wild pitch by Nicholas Bucci, James Beresford scores.
  • Josmil Pinto grounds out, shortstop Michael Marseco to first baseman Hunter Morris.
  • Steven Liddle hit by pitch.
  • Anderson Hidalgo doubles (23) on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Steven Liddle scores.
  • Wang-Wei Lin grounds out, pitcher Nicholas Bucci to first baseman Hunter Morris.

edit. Mass pointed out I've been spelling Khris Davis' name wrong all season. My apologies to Khris and family.

Quite a night for Khris Davis and the Timber Rattlers' offense.
I wonder if he and Gennett will get a cup of coffee with Brevard at some point this year? One would think so.

Or Huntesville. I got to believe both of them will skip BC next year. If anything, that would help ease a logjam of OFs and 2Bs.

Another big night for Cutter Dykstra too, on base 4 times, average up tp 308, and steals his 13th. Even though he seems to have stablized defensively at 3B, I would think 2B is his future.

This and that --

Do you think catcher Tyler Roberts wants to escape the 110 degree Arizona heat? My goodness...

Brevard's Matt Cline stole a base on his first attempt since I chided him on his SB ratio two nights ago. Way to show me, Matt.

Five triples on the season for the Rattlers' Michael Marseco. Chris Mehring's call of his three-bagger tonight expressed sheer bliss at watching him scamper.

Why is the Brewer box score always the very last one reported off the Dominican Republic each night?

***

And on a more serious note:

It absolutely mystifies me when a 1st or 2nd round pitcher can't get out of his own way. Do you realize how often and how carefully they are scrutinized during the pre-draft process? Area scout, cross-checker, scouting director, late private workouts -- multiple, multiple viewings. If your organization has reached a consensus by draft day, then I'm sorry, but that kid should be able to guarantee he won't flame out prior to at least reaching AA on stuff alone. High school or college, doesn't matter. The wasted combined value (thus far) on the Arnett - Lintz - Frederickson - Adams selections is going to prove decimating in the long run. End of rant (for now).

Lintz actually got through two innings tonight without allowing a run or (amazingly) a walk. The next two innings were, uh, not as kind.

Also, and I know he doesn't really fit into the same box as the aforementioned pitchers, but he was on the BA top 200, Thomas Keeling's first two pro outings have been just brutal. Two outs, three runs, and five walks tonight.

Infielder Connor Lind came in and stranded three runners or the line would have been even uglier (and Robert Currie saved Frederickson). Hard to fret after two outings for Keeling, who knows what changes the coaches are trying to implement. A bit longer track records thus far for the, I like that moniker, the "aforementioned four".

Credit to Eric Arnett for taking whatever he's doing in Maryvale to heart. Humbling, but hopefully successful.

Final: Great Falls 15, Helena 4

Helena Boxscore

Seth Lintz crusied through the 1st, got a big double play in the 2nd, but blew up in the 3rd, this pick is looking a "miss" right now. Seth lasted 3.1, giving up 9 runs, 7 earned, on 8 hits, 2 walks and 1 strike out while allowing 2 HRs. Evan Frederickson also stumbled tonight, with a horrible sequence I'll highlight below when he came into the game in the 4th. Rob Currie was solid over his 2.1 IP. Tyler Keening couldn't get out of the 9th walking 5 in 2/3 of an inning so a position player, Connor Lind, came in to record the final out. Carlos George was 1-4 with a 2B, Cody Hawn was 1-4 with a HR, and John Dishon was 1-3 to round out the noteworthy offensive achievements. The pre game audio was good, but by the time I was ready to switch back from WI the feed was dead so I have no other insights to offer. The H-Crew committed 5 errors in the game, Mike Walker (3) and Carlos George (2) were the culprits.

Helena Recap

I would have given this the ",,," but we don't do that here. The Great Falls 3rd and 4th are all you really need to know. I'd really like know why Frederickson goes completely wild out of the blue on occasion?

Great Falls Top 3rd

  • Randall Thorpe flies out to right fielder John Dishon.
  • Kyle Davis walks.
  • With Dusty Harvard batting, Kyle Davis steals (2) 2nd base.
  • Dusty Harvard singles on a ground ball to left fielder John Bivens. Kyle Davis scores.
  • With
Ross Wilson batting, wild pitch by Seth Lintz, . Dusty Harvard out at
3rd, catcher Tony Pechek to third baseman Michael Walker.
  • Ross Wilson walks.
  • Juan Silverio homers (3) on a fly ball to left center field. Ross Wilson scores.
  • Rafael Vera reaches on fielding error by third baseman Michael Walker.
  • Michael Blanke reaches on fielding error by third baseman Michael Walker. Rafael Vera to 3rd.
  • With Leighton Pangilinan batting, wild pitch by Seth Lintz, Rafael Vera scores. Michael Blanke to 2nd.
  • Leighton Pangilinan grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn.

Great Falls Top 4th

  • Michael Earley reaches on throwing error by shortstop Carlos George. Michael Earley to 2nd.
  • Randall Thorpe grounds out, third baseman Michael Walker to first baseman Cody Hawn. Michael Earley to 3rd.

Not surprising that all 3 of us would lament that 2008 draft tonight.

Yeah last outting he mad it 3 scoreless before the wheels feel off in the 4th. He just hits a major wall it seems
