Stars up, 4-2 in the 6th -- unfortunately, the Stars audio was chugging along all day and then became unavailable just prior to Steffan Wilson's clutch two-out three-run home run a short time ago.

Hopefully the audio's back up again soon, as Chattanooga does not appear to be offering audio for this early day game.

Nice win for a suddenly very impressive Stars squad, 8-2. Details a bit later, but a nice sight was Taylor Green taking a side-arming lefty deep cutting across the wind for a home run. Multiple sweet performances today, another hot weather day game, a day after traveling from Knoxville to Chattanooga for the start of a new series.

Final: Huntsville 8, Chattanooga (Dodgers) 2

Stars overpower Lookouts

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Steffan Wilson delivered a two-out three-run home run in the sixth as the Huntsville Stars (8-8, 41-45) took the lead for good in an 8-2 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (9-7, 42-23) Wednesday morning.

The victory made a winner out of Michael Fiers (1-0) in his Double A debut. The right-hander went six innings, scattering six hits as he gave up two runs. Fiers walked two and struck-out five in the victory.

The Stars put a run across against Chattanooga starter Bobby Blevins in the third. With one away, Brett Lawrie drew a walk. Caleb Gindl singled to right and the aggressive Lawrie advanced to third on the play. That set up Drew Anderson nicely and he came through with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Lookouts took the lead back in the bottom of the frame. With two out and a man on first, Jerry Sands singled to left. After Corey Smith was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, Andrew Lambo singled to right, driving in two runs and giving Chattanooga the 2-1 edge.

Their lead lasted until the fateful sixth inning. Gindl got things going with a single to right. One out later Zelous Wheeler was hit by a pitch. That would be it for Blevins (1-1), who went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits. He walked one and struck-out seven.

New pitcher David Pfeiffer got Taylor Green to pop out, but Wilson stepped to the plate and on a 1-1 pitch crushed a ball up in the zone way out of the yard in deep left field to give the Stars a 4-2 lead. It was Wilson’s sixth homer of the 2010 campaign.

They’d do more damage in the eighth and ninth.

With one on and one away in the eighth, Green took Pfeiffer deep to dead center field for his fourth bomb of the year. Then in the ninth, they got two runs off reliever Justin Miller thanks to a RBI double by Anderson and an RBI single off the bat of Green.

Meanwhile the Stars’ bullpen was as strong as ever. Robert Hinton worked two scoreless innings and Donovan Hand finished things off with a solid ninth inning to preserve the win.

The Lookouts left 11 runners on base as the Stars were able to get the outs when they needed to. Green, Wheeler, and Gindl tallied multi-hit games while Lawrie and Wheeler each scored two runs. Green and Wilson had three RBI apiece, and Anderson knocked in two.

The victory moves the Stars to within one game of first place in the Southern League standings. They’ll look to win their fourth straight Thursday evening as they send Michael Bowman (7-7, 5.82) to the mound to face Brent Leach (3-1, 5.75). You can catch all the action on the Stars Radio Network beginning at 6:00 PM central time with the Window World Pre-Game Report.

Huntsville Box Score

Michael Fiers doing exactly what someone who made their pro debut right around their 24th birthday (last year) should do, make up for lost time; Robert Hinton and Donovan Hand workhorses out of the Stars' pen; Aaron covered it nicely in his offensive summary above...

Final (game one): @Oklahoma City 11, Nashville 6

Sounds Fall To RedHawks In Twinbill Opener

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 11-6, in the high-scoring opener of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

After rallying from an early four-run deficit to take a third-inning lead, the Sounds surrendered six late runs to the RedHawks in suffering the loss.

Nashville took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the opener against Oklahoma City starter Tanner Scheppers. Lorenzo Cain (3-for-4) tripled in the top of the first frame and scored when Mat Gamel followed with an RBI single to right. The Sounds missed an opportunity to do more damage, leaving the bases loaded as Scheppers retired shortstop Luis Cruz on a flyout to escape the jam.

Oklahoma City responded immediately in the home half of the initial frame, scorching Sounds starter Chris Waters for five two-out runs to grab a 5-1 advantage.

A pair of walks came back to haunt the Nashville lefty as Gregorio Petit and Chris Davis each drew a free pass before trotting home on Chad Tracy's three-run homer to left, the infielder's team-leading 17th roundtripper of the year. After a fielding error by Gamel at third base extended the inning, former Sound Hernan Iribarren plated the other two runs in the frame with a two-run single off Waters.

Cain continued his solid night in the second when he drove home Ray Olmedo with an RBI single to make it a 5-2 contest. Olmedo had opened the inning by drawing a walk from Scheppers.

Nashville stormed back into the lead at 6-5 in the third with a four-run frame against Scheppers. After Brendan Katin led off with a single, Erick Almonte (3-for-3) ripped a one-out RBI double to right to pull Nashville within 5-3. After a Cruz single, Almonte came around to reduce the deficit to one when RedHawks left fielder Matthew Brown mishandled Olmedo's fly ball. Cruz tied the game when he hustled home on a Scheppers wild pitch before catcher Anderson De La Rosa lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center to bring home Olmedo.

The RedHawks pulled back in front in the fifth against Waters. After Davis led off with a double to center, Cruz booted Ryan Garko's grounder to short, allowing Davis to come plateward with the game-tying run on Nashville's third error of the evening. Jarrod Saltalamacchia (3-for-4) followed with a go-ahead RBI double to the wall in left.

Later in the frame, with runners on the corners, reliever Tim Dillard struck out Kevin Richardson but Oklahoma City executed a double steal on the play, with Saltalamacchia swiping home to increase the lead to 8-6.

Oklahoma City put the game out of reach in the sixth with three more runs against the Sounds' bullpen, stretching the lead to 11-6. Saltalamacchia's two-run single off David Johnson highlighted the frame.

Reliever Warner Madrigal (1-0) worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings behind Scheppers to pick up his first win of the year for Oklahoma City.

Waters (5-5) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in his 4 1/3 innings of action. It marked just the third time in 16 starts that the left-hander surrendered more than three runs.

Nashville box score

Guess Cain isn't going to let his brush with a call-up get to him. Gamel also made another error, this one throwing. Eight now on the season in total. Nice to see the Sounds knock around a really good pitching prospect in Scheppers at least.

Gennett had an opportunity to extend his consecutive games with a double streak but decided to leg out a triple instead. So I guess the streak is now 8 games with an extra base hit. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
