NY experiences

jaybird2001wi

I was just going through some old pictures of me in NYC today and I realized that I loved the city and had some good experiences in the Big Apple. I guess the reason why is my school paid for my hotel stay at the luxurious Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. I experienced everything a tourist should experience in New York, seeing the Statue of Liberty, going to Central Park, looking at Ground Zero, going to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and I even took the Subway a few times (I even risked my life taking the No. 7 to Shea Stadium just to check the area out for some reason.)

I even risked my health to eat a hot dog from a street vendor and also took a tour of the offices of Sports Illustrated.

Anyone have any cool experiences in New York? For some reason I felt safe walking around Manhattan and there was some law enforcement presence to ensure the safety of people.

I guess if I had a choice of a major city in the country, I wouldn't mind living in NYC.

I hid my backpack in some bushes at a train station and headed straight to Shea when I found out the Brewers were in town. Can't say i felt my life was in danger on the No. 7, but then again i probably looked like a bum. Headed out of town right after the game, which we won by 3 after scoring 5 runs in the 9th.

I have had many hot dogs from street vendors, they are great and cheap! I have also bought the roasted nuts from street vendors, they were as well tasty and cheap. Famous Ray's Pizza, China Town, Central Park. MSG all great places. I have been to NY 3 times and want to go back very soon.

I've been to NYC twice in the last two years on tour with my band and enjoyed every minute of it. It's a great place to visit, but I don't see myself living there. It's too congested for my tastes and $5 for a Miller Lite at ANY bar is no good. Central Park, Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Lower Manhattan....I'm ready to go back.

My favorite experience so far was when I woke up earlier than everybody else to do my laundry at a laundromat in Brooklyn. I just sat on the sidewalk and soaked it all in. There's definitely a nice vibe going on there if you're into living in cities. I'm sure my opinion will change when somebody tries to mug me.

Only time I was in NYC was as a senior in HS in '91. Our group also stayed in the Roosevelt Hotel. We called it "Dive No. 5" because our room was room No. 5 on the floor but it was a hole in the wall. No kidding. Plus, they tried to pack 6 of us HS-sized guys in a room made for two. And no A/C. After some "complaining" (that's putting it mildly, by the way) our director was able to finagle an extra room so we could split up.

Sorry, but that place was a dive. The lobby--nice. The rest--not so much. Things may have changed since then, however.

Highlight of the hotel, I guess, was sneaking up onto the roof one evening. Fabulous view. Still surprised we didn't get caught.

Our trip to Statue of Liberty was very eh, because it was packed and our group began the ascent (view stairs) and got to the top of the pedestal before our director told us that was it because we had to get going. We got behind schedule and still had to go to other stuff. Boy, even the parents complained about that one.

I had no problems with the city and the singing contest our choir was there for was very nice. Just the setup for the tour was not that well done and left a bad taste in my mouth. Several of us mention the trip when we see each other.

Wikipedia answers all: The Roosevelt Hotel was closed in 1995 and subsequently renovated to the tune of $65 million dollars. Probably explains the difference in experience. I've never been inside, so I wouldn't know.

Only time I visited NYC was back in 2003. I did all the touristy stuff and enjoyed the city in general. I'm looking into the possibility of working there post-graduation. Hopefully I can find some good Brewers bars around town.

I have heard however, that there's a bar/restaurant operated by a UW alum that does Badgers game days there.

I've been there countless times, all over, so I wouldn't really know how to respond. But one of my favorite things is that you never know what you're going to see/hear. Like a gossip columnist says "Only in New York kids, only in New York." I'm sure you can say that about all major cities, but from my experience NYC takes the cake with the crazies. Here's a fun website that shows a little of what I'm talking about: www.overheardinnewyork.com/
