Final (game one): Tampa 2, @Brevard County 1

Brevard County box score

Wily Peralta was strong: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 9/6 GO/AO. As usual, though, the Manatees' offense struggled, and the solo homer Mike Ramlow allowed in the 9th inning proved to be decisive. The play-by-play only goes through the 5th at the moment, but it looks like Franklin Romero replaced Pete Fatse in right field at some point; Romero made the most of it, going 2-2 in his first FSL action. Matt Cline led off and was 2-4; Josh Prince batted last and was 1-4. Angel Salome was 1-4 with a double and three strikeouts, Shawn Zarraga was 0-3 with a HBP, and Erik Komatsu was 0-4.

Brevard County play-by-play

The one run:

Brevard County Bottom 3rd

  • Peter Fatse flies out to
    right fielder Zoilo Almonte.
  • Josh Prince singles on a ground
ball to second baseman Corban Joseph.
  • Matt Cline singles on a
line drive to center fielder Melky Mesa. Josh Prince to 3rd.

Final (game one): @DSL Brewers 1, DSL Athletics 0 (7 innings)

DSL Brewers box score

Wow, what's gotten into the pitchers here? This time, it was 18-year-old Jeffrey Saba going the distance for the shutout, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out eight. Hitaniel Arias was reached in all three plate appearance, tallying a single, walk, and HBP. The Brewers had only four other baserunners. Jose Pena was 0-2.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Of course, Arias didn't even bat in the one inning the Brewers scored:

  • With
Joan Abreu batting, wild pitch by Edward Almonte, Jose R. Garcia

    first baseman Jose Rosario.

The A's biggest threat was in the 6th, when Saba gave up the only two hits he'd allow:

Final (game two): @Brevard County 4, Tampa 1 (7 innings)

Brevard County box score

Well, Jeremy Jeffress finally gave up a run, but he still hasn't allowed a hit. Jeffress worked the final two innings tonight, allowing a run on two walks and a wild pitch with three strikeouts. R.J. Seidel started and tossed five shutout frames, surrendering two hits and a walk and fanning two. Both pitchers did a good job keeping the ball on the ground, Seidel with a 9/3 GO/AO and Jeffress with a 3/0. Scott Krieger continues to make the most of his few hits, this time with a two-run triple. Erik Komatsu was 1-3. Angel Salome DHed and, after doubling once in two trips, was lifted for a pinch hitter.

Final, Suspended Game: Wisconsin 6, Cedar Rapids 5

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Chris

Dennis continued his hot hitting from Sunday in Cedar Rapids.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers designated hitter had a pair of hits and an

RBI before the Independence Day game at Perfect Game Field against the Cedar

Rapids Kernels was suspended by rain. He

came back on Monday when the game was restarted and had two hits, including a

home run, and two big RBIs to lead the Rattlers to a 6-5 win over the Kernels.

Wisconsin (31-47 overall, 5-5

second half) grabbed the initiative with three runs on six hits against Kernels

starting pitcher Garrett Richards in the first inning.

Hunter Morris drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Later in the inning, Dennis drove in a run with a double for the 3-0

lead.

But, the Kernels (48-30, 5-5)

rallied to take the lead before rain halted play.

A solo homer by Matt Long in the third inning got Cedar Rapids on the

scoreboard. In the fourth, Justin

Bass tripled in a run and would score the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

Long struck again with an RBI single later in the frame.

Then, Jean Segura stepped in to

bat. But after he took a pitch to

make the count 1-1, a downpour forced the game to be stopped.

The game restarted on Tuesday

with runners on second and third for the Kernels.

Rattlers reliever Efrain Nieves walked Segura to load the bases.

But, Nieves got Nolan Brannon to ground into an inning ending 4-6-3

double play.

Dennis tied the game with a

leadoff homer in the top of the sixth inning.

The long ball was his tenth of the season.

The Rattlers went back in front

with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Morris beat out an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by

Cutter Dykstra, and took third on a balk by Skaggs.

Dennis delivered Morris across the plate with a double to right-center.

An error on a grounder off the bat of Austin Stockfisch later in the

inning allowed Dennis to score a run to make the score 6-4 Wisconsin.

Nieves pitched 4-2/3 innings of

one-hit, scoreless relief and turned the game over to closer Jon Pokorny in the

bottom of the ninth. The lefty gave

up a leadoff single, but struck out the next two batters.

However, Long made the game interesting with an RBI single.

Then, Pokorny made it interesting by walking Segura to put the winning

run on base.

Pokorny struck out pinch hitter

Casey Haerther to finish the game and pick up his fifth save of the season.

Wisconsin snapped a seven-game

losing streak to the Kernels with the victory.

HOME RUNS:

WIS: Chris Dennis (10th, 0 on in 6th inning, off Tyler

Skaggs, 0 out)

CR: Matt Long (2nd,

0 on in 3rd inning, off Maverick Lasker, 0 out)

WP: Efrain Nieves (2-3)

LP: Tyler Skaggs (6-4)

SAVE: Jon Pokorny (5)

Wisconsin Boxscore

I've been waiting to post but the boxscore is still broken. Maverick Lasker with a tough outing. I've been quieter about Chris Dennis this season, I'm still a big believer, I just would have expected a season from him like Kris Davis has put up, his AVE just plummeted for a long a time. Mike Trout is so good he's irritating, but the Rattlers finally managed to throw him out stealing a base, however he still had a big game, he just owns Rattler pitching.

Final: Huntsville 3, Tennessee 1

Pitching dominates in win over Smokies

By Aaron Morse

Amaury Rivas went six strong innings as the Huntsville Stars (6-8, 39-45) took the lead early and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (8-6, 50-33) Monday night.

Brett Lawrie started the game the right way with a double to left that Tony Campana misplayed, allowing Lawrie to advance to third. After Caleb Gindl walked, Zelous Wheeler grounded out to second, scoring Lawrie and advancing Gindl to second (audio). For Wheeler, it’s his 40th RBI of the season. With two away, Taylor Green crushed the second double of the inning for the Stars (audio), scoring Gindl and giving them a 2-0 edge against Smokies’ starter Chris Carpenter (6-4).

Rivas (8-5) struggled a bit with his control in the bottom of the frame. With one out he walked Brett Jackson and hit Josh Vitters with a pitch. Blake Lalli made him pay as he singled home Jackson to make the score 2-1 (audio).

To say Rivas settled down would be an understatement as he subdued the hard-hitting Smokies for his six innings of work. He surrendered the lone run on three hits, walked three and struck-out three as well.

The Stars tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh against reliever Marcos Mateo. Drew Anderson led-off with a single to left. One out later Steffan Wilson reached on a throwing error by Smokies’ shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. Lee Haydel singled to load the bases and Dayton Buller came up big with a RBI base knock to extend the lead to 3-1 (audio). That’s all they would get though as pinch hitter Andy Machado struck-out and Brett Lawrie was robbed of a base hit by Josh Vitters for the final out of the inning.

Donovan Hand retired all six batters he faced as he tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth.

Jim Henderson worked a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year (audio).

The Stars look to win the three-game series Tuesday as they play a morning game so set your alarms as first pitch is at 11:00 am central time. You can tune in only on www.huntsvillestars.com beginning at 10:45 am with the Window World Pre-Game Report. Josh Butler (1-4, 3.93 ERA) will be on the mound.

Huntsville Boxscore

I missed Rogers pitching yesterday visiting my new baby niece, but I love me some Amaury Rivas, some day he will be in AAA, then Milwaukee, and I will be a happy camper. He went 6 IP but allowed 3 walks and only struck out 3. Donovan Hand and Jim Henderson were excellent in relief, neither allowed a hit or walk and struck out 3 between them. at the plate Brett Lawrie was 1-4 with 2B, Zelous Wheeler was 1-4 with a 2B, Taylor Green was 1-4 with a 2B, and Drew Anderson was 2-4. A clean defensive game and solid win all the way around.

Koshansky Homers Twice In Nashville's 10-5 Win

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Joe Koshansky homered twice as the Nashville Sounds grounded the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 10-5, on Monday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game set.

It was first time Koshansky has hit a pair of homers in a game as a member of the Nashville Sounds and his fifth homer in the last seven games. Koshansky's two homer night marked the third time a Sounds player has hit two dingers in a game this season, while also extending Nashville's home run streak to 10 consecutive games, the longest stretch by the club this season.

Nashville (44-38) posted a season-high 19 hits in the win with six Sounds recording multi-hit contests. Norris Hopper had four hits for the second time in his last four games while Luis Cruz and Anderson De La Rosa each had three hits.

In his second straight quality start, Sam Narron (3-3) picked up the win after fanning a season-high eight batters while allowing one run in seven innings pitched.

Chris Davis put Oklahoma City on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After Esteban German led off the inning with a double, the RedHawks third baseman hit a two-out single to center field to plate German for a 1-0 lead.

The Sounds tied the ballgame at 1-1 in the following frame and didn't look back as Koshansky crushed an opposite-field solo home run over the left field wall to lead off the inning, his 11th homer of the season. Later in the same inning, Johnny Raburn, De La Rosa, and Hopper recorded three straight two-out base hits, as Hopper singled home Raburn from second base for an early 2-1 Nashville advantage.

Nashville added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead. After De La Rosa reached on a fielding error and Hopper recorded his third base hit, Ray Olmedo advanced each runner in scoring position with his PCL-leading 11th sacrifice of the season. Third baseman Mat Gamel then smacked a line drive two-run single to center to plate both runners.

Olmedo added to the Nashville lead in the next inning with an RBI base knock to right field that plated Cruz for a 5-1 lead, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Sounds tacked on four more runs in the next frame, as Koshansky's second solo homer started the damage for Nashville. After Erick Almonte walked and scored on a throwing error by Oklahoma City for the next run, De La Rosa smacked a two-run double that made it 9-1. De La Rosa's RBIs were the first in his Triple-A career. De La Rosa added another RBI to his night with another single to score Almonte in the next frame, adding an insurance run for a 10-1 lead.

Oklahoma came back in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four runs on reliever Jeff Bennett. Walking the first two hitters to begin the inning, Bennett allowed a single to Max Ramirez and then a grand slam to Ryan Garko that cut the Nashville lead to 10-5. It was Garko's eighth homer on the year and the second grand slam allowed by the Sounds this season.

Bennett was charged for four runs in 1/3 of an inning, while David Johnson ended the contest with 1 2/3 shutout frames in relief.

Matt Harrison (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) while scattering nine hits with four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in his first start for Oklahoma City.

The Sounds and RedHawks will play a scheduled doubleheader beginning at 5:05 pm CT on Tuesday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Left-hander Chris Waters (5-4, 3.31) takes the mound for Nashville in he first game. Right-hander Marty McLeary (2-6, 10.38) will start the twinbill finale.

Nashville box score

Gamel ended up 1-5 with a walk. Minor League Splits has Koshansky with a hellacious 28.3% line drive rate rate this year--he should be hitting way better than .258. Brendan Katin walked two more times, though one was intentional.

Final: @AZL Giants 7, AZL Brewers 0

AZL Brewers box score

Pretty blah box score here. Mystery man Michael Schaub started and pitched decently: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. The immortal Dexter Bobo also worked a perfect inning. fdfg's own Travis Stortz wasn't so lucky, surrendering four runs in his one inning of work. As you would expect, not much going on on offense, though it's great to see Yadiel Rivera go 2-4 with another double. Max Walla also doubled and walked. Demetrius McKelvie struck out three times in four at-bats--that's 25 in 51 plate appearances now. Former hey-you're-not-Angel-Salome Nashville catcher Ben Johnson, last seen going on the Sounds' DL on 6/1, resurfaced here for the Baby Brewers (do we need to rename them now that there's a baby-er team?) and went 0-3.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Rivera twice was on second with no outs but couldn't score either time:

AZL Brewers Bottom 6th

  • Yadiel Rivera doubles (3)
on a fly ball to right fielder Johnathan DeBerry.
  • Ben Johnson
lines into double play, left fielder Jose De La Cruz to second baseman
Carlos Willoughby. Yadiel Rivera doubled off 2nd.
  • Joseph
    Paciorek called out on strikes.

AZL Brewers Bottom 9th

  • Yadiel Rivera singles
on a soft fly ball to right fielder Johnathan DeBerry.
  • Tyler
Roberts walks. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd.
  • Joseph Paciorek
    strikes out swinging.
  • Maxwell Walla grounds out to first
baseman Jose Cuevas. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd. Tyler Roberts to 2nd.
  • Demetrius
    McKelvie strikes out swinging.

Final: 7 innings: Cedar Rapids 13, Wisconsin 5

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Cedar

Rapids Kernels first baseman Casey Haerther made up for not coming through early

on Monday night at Perfect Game Field. Haerther

struck out as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs,

the tying run at second, and the winning run at first in a 6-5 Wisconsin Timber

Rattlers win in the conclusion of a suspended game from Sunday.

Haerther drove in five in the regularly scheduled game and led the

Kernels to a 13-5 win.

Cedar Rapids (49-30 overall,

6-5 second half) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning

against Rattlers starting pitcher Damon Krestalude.

But, they only scored one run. An

infield single by Justin Bass scored the run.

In the second, the Kernels had

none on with two outs. Ricky Alvarez

doubled. Mike Trout followed with a

single to send Alvarez home for a 2-0 lead.

The Kernels tacked on three

more runs off Krestalude in the bottom of the third inning.

Jean Segura tripled to start the inning.

Haerther's sacrifice fly scored Segura to make the score 3-0. A walk

and a hit-and-run single put runners at second and third to chase Krestalude

from the game.

Reliever Santo Manzanillo

allowed both inherited runners to score. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by

Tyler Mann scored the two runners and put the Kernels in front 5-0.

Cedar Rapids extended their

lead to 8-0 with three runs against Manzanillo in the bottom of the fourth.

Three straight RBI hits by Matt Long, Segura, and Haerther did the job.

Wisconsin (31-48, 5-6) rallied

for four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Michael Marseco drove in two runs with a single.

Later in the inning, Kentrail Davis doubled in a run and an error on the

play allowed another run to score to get Wisconsin to within 8-4.

The Kernels pulled away in the

bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Alex Jones.

The bases were loaded with no outs and Jones walked Long to force in a

run. After getting the first out,

Jones gave up a three-run double to Haerther.

That put the Kernels up 12-4. Matt

Costello Came out of the bullpen to get the second out, but he gave up an RBI

double to Michael Wing and Cedar Rapids had a 13-4 lead.

Marseco beat out a potential

inning ending double play ball in the top of the sixth inning to allow a runner

to score from third to account for Wisconsin's fifth and final run of the

game.

The final game of the series is

Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field. Kyle

Heckathorn (6-4, 2.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.

Cedar Rapids sends Stephen Locke (3-2, 3.05) to the hill.

Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in

for broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show

starting at 6:15pm.

Did anyone else do a double take on the headline? I thought it said "Heether" the first time I read it. Damon Krestalude was gone a month and I barely noticed I've been so pleased with the WI starting pitching. He struggled from get the go tonight in his first game back. Santo Manzanillo for all the talent in his arm was a gas can again as was Alex Jones... definitely not one of the better pitching performances of the season. Offensively there was quite a bit to like, Scooter Gennett was 2-4 with 2B extending his hit streak to 11 (I think), D' Vontrey Richardson 1-4 with a 2B, Kentrail Davis 1-3 with a HBP (shocking), Cameron Garfield 2-3, Chris Dennis 1-3 with 2B, and Mike Marseco went 2-3 while almost hitting his first career HR. Had it not gone foul in the corner, my summary would have been dedicated entirely to Michael.

Helena Boxscore

Steve spoke in glowing terms of Tyler Thornburg before the game. I actually listed to the WI games tonight so I didn't catch anything beyond the pre game. Thornburg did not disappoint, striking out 4 over 2 innings while allowing a solo HR. One of my favorite names in the system, Stosh Wawrzasek, was pitching well until a disastrous 7th. Thomas Keeling saw his first action and didn't fare well either, Eric Marzec pitched a clean final 1.1 innings. Reggie Keen was a monster at the plate going 3-4 with 2 doubles and a HR, Shea Vucinich was 1-4 with a 2B, Greg Hopkins 2-5, Gerald Ogrinc 2-3 with 2 errors, and John Bivens 1-3 with a HR

Final, Game Two: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Athletics 5

DSL Brewers Game Two Box Score

Brewers led 7-0 after 4.5 innings, then held on; closer Rigoberto Almonte entered the game with one on and one out, tieing run at the plate (is it tying or tieing -- you'd think I'd know after ten years of Link Reporting) and sealed the deal; 6'7" LHP Eliezer Montano pitched around trouble early on but was touched for three runs in the 5th and called it a day after that; still just 18 years old for another month, RHP Joel Dicent did not pitch decent, mixing in three wild pitches into his 1.1 innings and prompting Almonte's beckoning; big target first baseman Hitaniel Arias completed a successful twinbill with a 2-for-4 day, on base five times Monday; Raul Mondesi, Jr. was 2-for-4 as well; SS Andres Martinez sat out both games Monday...

Tampa tops 'Tees in first game of doubleheader

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA - In the first game of a doubleheader - and the first game for the Manatees since Friday - Brevard County fell 2-1 to the Tampa Yankees in nine innings of a scheduled seven-inning game. BC reliever Mike Ramlow gave up a one-out solo homer to Tampa's Melky Mesa in the top of the ninth, that was ultimately the difference.

The Manatees got on the board first in the top of the third when with one out and runners on the corners, Sergio Miranda lined out to Yankees shortstop Jose Pirela and Pirela tried to double up Matt Cline going back to first, but his throw was wild, allowing Cline to move to second and Josh Prince to score.

Manatees starter Wily Peralta kept Tampa in check all evening, at one point retiring 11 batters in a row, but ran into some trouble in the sixth as he allowed three straight one-out singles as the Yankees tied the game at 1-1. Tampa had runners on first and second with one out, but Peralta forced Zolio Almonte to ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

For the day, Peralta went seven innings and allowed just the one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking just two.

Brevard County had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but Prince struck out looking and Cline flied out to right to send the game to extra innings.

Ramlow sat the Yanks down in order in the eighth as the Manatees threatened again in the bottom of the inning as Angel Salome reached on a two-out double. After an intentional walk to Sean Halton, Brock Kjeldgaard flied out to left to leave the runner stranded.

After Tampa took a one run lead in the top of the ninth, Brevard County looked to get something going in the ninth and Franklin Romero singled with one out, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. That would be the last runner to reach base as Tampa pulled out the 2-1 win.

Cline and Romero each had two hits for the Manatees.

BC takes game two of doubleheader, 4-1By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA - In the second game of Monday night's doubleheader, the Manatees scored four in the fourth and that would be all they need to defeat the Tampa Yankees 4-1 in a seven-inning game.

Brevard County sent seven hitters to the plate as three of the Manatees four hits in the game came in the fourth. The scoring started with one out and runners on second and third as Sean Halton hit a ball that went right under the glove of Yankees first baseman Bradley Suttle, to score Sergio Miranda and send Erik Komatsu to third.

Next up would be Scott Krieger and he would clear the bases with a triple to center field to make it a 3-0 lead for the Manatees. Michael Roberts then came up and drove in Krieger with a single to right to make it 4-0.

The Manatees pitching staff took care of the rest as starter R.J. Seidel threw five shutout innings and allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out two. Jeremy Jeffress then came in to finish the game and went two innings and struck out three, while walking two and allowing the only Yankees run on a RBI ground out in the top of the seventh.

Komatsu, Krieger, Roberts and Angel Salome each had one of Brevard County's four hits, with Salome's and Kriger's being extra-base hits.

Seidel earned his third win of the season and his ERA is now at 2.54.

Brevard County and Tampa will close out their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central) at Space Coast Stadium.

For those who can't make it out to the Wednesday night's game, Stephen C. Smith of SpaceCoastBaseball.com will be doing a live webcast from Space Coast Stadium with all the action.

O's douse Brewers

By TROY WARZOCHA for the Missoulian

With many of the fans in attendance long gone because of heavy rain throughout the sixth and seventh innings, the Missoula Osprey gave those who remained a treat, beating the Helena Brewers 8-4 Monday at Ogren-Allegiance Park.

"It's great for our pitcher to hold (Helena's) offense for the whole game," said O's manager Hector De La Cruz. "Our offense came and put up six runs (in the seventh) and that was a huge part of the game right there."

The O's took a pitchers' duel into the seventh inning and turned it into a confortable victory, scoring six runs in the frame and pounding Helena's pitchers into submission.

The win improves the O's to 6-9 in the Pioneer League's North Divison and leaves them four games back of the first-place Brewers, who fell to 10-5 with the loss.

In the decisive inning, the O's sent 11 hitters to the plate, scoring six runs on three hits and five walks. Third baseman Eric Groff punctuated the offensive outburst with two-run home run to left.

Before the O's reached for their bats in the seventh, they were feeling the momentum as reliever Randy Hamrick wiggled out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the top of the inning.

After allowing two singles and hitting a man, the O's got down to business using a combination of slick fielding and Brewer offensive ineptitude to take the wind out of Helena's sails.

"It was confidence right there in that inning," De La Cruz said.

O's second baseman Antonio Sepulveda caught a fly ball on the run in right field, Hamrick then stabbed a comebacker and nailed the force out at home with an off-balance throw, and shortstop Raul Navarro was able to finish off the Brewers with an easily fielded put-out at second.

Hamrick came on in relief of starter Robby Rowland and pitched brilliantly.

The 19th-round pick pitched five strong innings, giving up only one run on six hits while striking out three.

"He was outstanding," De La Cruz said. "You couldn't ask for more."

With Hamrick excelling on the mound, the Osprey bats were able to heat up on a cold, rainy night.

Designated hitter Richie Rowland kept up his incredible hot streak with his second home run in as many games and a pair of RBIs.

Rowland also extended his team-high hitting streak to 12 games.

"I'm just trying to get into fastball counts," Rowland said. "I'm just trying to find a good place to hit in the strike zone. Luckily, I'm getting the pitches to hit and I'm not missing them."

Left fielder Adam Eaton laced a two-RBI single in the seventh to complement Groff's two-run dinger.

However, the big seventh would not have happened if center fielder Chris Jarrett had not legged out a potential inning-ending double play early in the inning.

Hamrick got the win for the O's and Helena pitcher Stosh Wawrzasek took the loss for the Brewers.

Wawrzasek gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in 4 1-3 innings of work.

The O's wrap up their current homestand against the Brewers on Tuesday at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).
