Mr. Cain goes to Milwaukee (well, technically, to Atlanta); Latest -- Lorenzo sent back to Nashville

And That
Yeah, because Gomez is definitely earning all that playing time with his awesome bat.

Gomes also has a below average UZR, so he not earning it with his glove either. Sadly, Gomez has been even worse than his UZR suggests, because it doesn't account for Gomez constantly throwing to the wrong base or throwing 20 feet wide of the cutoff man.

Gomez is just bad. He wasn't a good minor leaguer, and had no business ever being promoted to the majors. He needs to start over at AA. Maybe in 4 years he'll turn the corner, similar to Jose Guillen.

Guillen was rushed to the majors at age 21 like Gomez, sucked for 3 years like Gomez, and then bounced around for 3 more. He eventually broke out at age 27. To bad that's way to far off for us to keep wasting time on Gomez. The Twins really ruined this guys career.

I doubt Cain is an upgrade over Edmonds against RHP. It wouldn't bother me to see Gomez sent down though to see if we can't salvage something out of him with some minor league full time play.

Edmonds since the end of April: .261/.305/.429/.733

He really has not been good at all.

So you cherry pick his worst months, while playing injured, and he still has an OPS over 700 in part time duty, while playing the best defense of any of our OFs, and you tell he hasn't been good. I can't agree with that. He's not great, but he fills his role very well. He has a OPS over 900 in July, now that he's healthy again.

Why did we give Heether away again? If the purpose is simply to have a RH bat off the bench, that would be the perfect role for an aging pseudo-prospect like Heether. Cain is going to be a starting OF for the Brewers for the next six years... he needs everyday playing time, not bench time. Why not put Katin on the 40-man and bring him up? Oh yeah, because they needed to "reward" Jeffress with their open 40-man spot.

It just doesn't make sense to bring Cain up simply to have him sit on the bench behind two players he's better than. It wastes service time and keeps him from getting everyday playing time. This stinks of awful roster management by Melvin and enough has already been said about Macha's disdain for rookies.

Good luck in the 3-4 PAs you'll get over the next few weeks Lorenzo. I look forward to seeing you as a starting OF as soon as Macha's gone.

Macha's been pretty good about playing Lucroy consistently (which surprises me), but I have a feeling Cain is going to be riding the bench until he gets sent back down.
Seeing as he'll be sent down on Wednesday when Macha said Gallardo would likely return, that's not too long anyway.

Edmonds looks good on defense because he is to slow to get to most balls in the outfield and he doesn't drop balls. Lets not forget that Edmonds hits with the platoon advantage most of the time.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

If Edmonds was too slow to get to balls, he would have a below average UZR, but he doesn't. Its funny how dismissive you are of UZR when it hurts your argument.

As for hitting with platoon advantage, I'll say he's at least taking advantage of it. Gomez's has seen limited ABs against tough righthanders because of Edmonds, yet he hasn't taken advantage of that.

No one is saying Edmonds should play fulltime, but he's been a very good role player.

Basically what you're saying is he has bad range, so if he did have bad range his UZR would be bad, but his UZR is good.

Not necessarily. It all depends on the chances he gets. UZR can vary from year to year. That is why you need more than a year to go off of and you still need to regress it. His career UZR is about average. No reason to expect a 40 year old guy who falls apart when he plays back to back days to have even average defense when his defense has been barely above average since 2002. Gomez gets to balls Edmonds can only get to in his dreams.

Just like you shouldn't use a months worth of OPS to determine how good a player is you can't use 1/2 a season's worth of UZR to rate how good someone is on defense. All it tells you is they were good/bad for a small time. So small as to be useless in determining true worth. A couple well played or misplayed balls skews the rating way too much to be of any use at all. Yet it gets used all the time in such situations.

UZR, while useful for players with a lot of data to look back on, is quickly becoming the most abused stat in baseball.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Going 3 for 4 last night doesn't somehow make Gomez a better choice for today...
Edmonds being a 40-year-old who hasn't done much this year doesn't make him a better choice either. Career numbers mean nothing for him at this point. That's the point I'm trying to make. Macha should ride the hot hand and not play matchups using career numbers.

Gomez will never build on good games like that if he sits out the next night. Going 3 for 4 is something he could build off of. Don't see him ever improving if he sits for Edmonds every other day.

That opinion is fine and all, if you think he should play full time to see if he can improve I'm ok with it. Just playing him because he got 3 hits the night before isn't a good idea though, That is like starting him just because he is 3 for 6 in his career of some random pitcher.

Yeah, and Macha would actually do something like that. He has before. I'm just saying that playing Edmonds so much really does nothing for us is all.

Stevo, I agree about Gomez and Cain playing every day. Cain in Milwaukee, Gomez in Huntsville. Seriously, his performance has been so bad that he needs a wake up call that's lower than AAA
