I wonder what is better, the games where Mark is unhittable but walks 5 or the games he gives up 5 or 6 hits but walks 0 or 1.... I wish he would meet somewhere in the middle it seems like it is one or the other. I'd like to see a 5 IP 3H 1BB 5K type of a line for a few straight games. The BB's are the only thing holding him back right now.

I listen to the Helena game today and Miller pitch really well outside of a rough start where he gave up 2 straight walks but once he settled in he was pretty good...excluding against Rowan who is on a tear right now (2 bombs and on the season is hitting like .530). Jimmy Nelson had a nice 2nd inning his first could have been better. The RBI triple was a routine fly ball any other night Steve said but the wind carried over Keen's head and the a little linedrive by the next hitter scored the second run. After that he settled in. Prob had a few nerves out there for his first pro outting. Sizemore made is debut for the season and I guess he is a very strong guy with popeye type arms, Steve mention that in talking with Yost, Yost said that if he stopped trying to pull the ball so much he could be a extreme dangerous hitter. From listening to his at-bats it seems he hits the ball hard and on the screws. Thats what I got out of the game

Final: Helena 6, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 4

Osprey turned away by Brewers, 6-4

Missoula Osprey

MISSOULA, MT - Richie Rowland and Roberto Rodriguez each hit home runs, while Rodriguez and Chris Jarrett collected two hits each, but the Missoula Osprey could not generate enough offense to overcome the Helena Brewers in a 6-4 setback on Sunday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

The Brewers, who lead the Pioneer League's North Division with a 10-4 record, scored twice in the top of the first inning and three more times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, then held off the Osprey enough to pick up the win.

Sunday's contest had its share of home runs, as both teams hit two roundtrippers each. Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 in the game, hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second, pulling Missoula (5-9) within 2-1. It answered Shea Vucinich's solo shot in the first for Helena.

Greg Hopkins blasted a three-run home run in the top of the fourth off of Sammy De Los Santos - the only runs the Osprey reliever would allow in four innings of work - to stake the Brewers to a four-run lead. However, the Osprey would respond with a solo home run to right-center by Rowland, who extended his current hitting streak to 11 games, in the bottom of the fourth inning, and a two-run fifth, highlighted by back-to-back RBI hits by Adam Eaton, who tripled in a run, and Eric Groff, who also finished the night with two hits.

The Osprey were kept in check over the final four innings by the Brewers bullpen. Jimmy Nelson pitched two innings of relief to pick up the win, while Adrian Rosario pitched the final three innings to get the save.

The Osprey will host the Brewers in the third of a four-game series on Monday beginning at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Right-hander Robby Rowland will get the start for Missoula, while right-hander Tyler Thornburg gets the call for Helena.

No heroics: Osprey can't come up with timely hits in loss to Helena

By TROY WARZOCHA for the Missoulian

For the second time in as many days the Missoula Osprey went into the final frame trailing the Helena Brewers, this time however, there would be no late-game heroics for the O's as the Brewers held on for the 6-4 victory on Sunday at Ogren-Allegiance Park.

"We missed some stuff," said O's right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. "I got (thrown) out at second - that's not something we're supposed to do, but we played pretty good. We feel good."

The loss drops the O's to 5-9 in the Pioneer League's North Division and puts them five games back of the first-place Brewers.

Up until the sixth inning, the O's had gone toe-to-toe with the league leaders, and it seemed as if there might be another late rally in their bones.

Unfortunately for Missoula, the bats which had put 10 men on through six went ice cold upon the arrival of Helena reliever Adrian Rosario.

Rosario subdued the O's offense in dominating fashion, finishing off the last three innings of the game while allowing only one hit and striking out five.

The only hit by the O's in the final third of the game came off the bat of Saturday's hero Eric Groff in the form of a leadoff double.

Rosario, a 20-year-old righty out of the Dominican Republic, attacked the O's from the outset, getting ahead of nearly every batter he faced.

"Their bullpen, they did a good job," said O's manager Hector De La Cruz.

For as effective as Rosario was, the O's were also undone by their inability to hit with runners on base.

Over the course of the game Missoula went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

By comparison, Helena stranded 13 on base, but converted more times with runners in scoring position.

The Brewers' big hit of the night came off the bat of second baseman Greg Hopkins. With two men on in the fourth, Hopkins launched a bomb over the wall in left field.

Missoula answered back in the same inning with a Richie Rowland home run, a solo shot. The hit extended Rowland's hit streak to a team-high 11 games.

Rodriguez paced the Missoula attack by going 2 for 3 with a solo home run and a stolen base.

"I was confident at the plate," Rodriguez said. "I was seeing the ball pretty good. I made good decisions with my swing and that's it".

Rodriguez even got into the act in the field, robbing Brewers first baseman Cody Hawn of an extra-base hit with a leaping catch at the wall in the eighth.

J.R. Bradley took the loss for the O's. The second-round pick out of Nitro, W.V., pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.

The young hurler has yet to get it going for the O's this season, but De La Cruz knows the potential the 18-year old has.

"We're going to take it step-by-step," De La Cruz said. "He's new in our system. We've been trying to get him pitching (more innings) in every outing. He's going to be alright."

Despite giving up two runs in two innings of work, Jimmy Nelson got the win for the Brewers.

Helena Box Score

Jimmy Nelson and Adrian Rosario combined to strike out seven and work a 7-to-0 ground ball ratio in their five innings; Rosario pitched in Maryvale in 2007 as a 17-year-old and improved his control greatly after that first season -- he was with Helena throughout 2009 with a .322 BAA, if he can improve on that, the Brewers may have something; starter Matt Miller's two runs allowed in four innings came on solo home runs...

RF Johnny Dishon was 3-for-5 and stole four bases, twice stealing both 2nd and 3rd base after singling -- on each occasion, catcher Tony Pecheck, with walks behind Dishon's base hits, stole second base himself as part of double steals; check out the batting averages at the top of the order for CF Reggie Keen (.412), SS Shea Vucinich (.340), 1B Cody Hawn (.380) and 2B Greg Hopkins (.373) here in the early going; catcher Brent Dean, SS Carlos George still sidelined...

In progress: Cedar Rapids 4 (and threatening for more), Wisconsin 3, bottom of the 4th in Cedar RapidsRattlers @ Kernels suspended on July 4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game at Cedar Rapids on Sunday has been suspended. A sudden downpour hit the stadium in the bottom of the fourth inning. The grounds crew was unable to get the tarp all the way on the field and the rain made a wreck of the infield between first and second base, the home plate area, and the first baseline.

Wisconsin took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But the Kernels scored a run in the bottom of the third to get on the scoreboard. Cedar Rapids took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and had runners at second and third with one out when the rain hit.

Sunday's game will be resumed at that point on Monday evening at 5:35 PM at Perfect Game Field. The game will be played to its conclusion. There will be a 30 minute break. The regularly scheduled game, which is set for seven innings, will be played after the break.

Fans may tune in for all of the action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:15 PM.

Wisconsin Partial Box Score (no game log)

Ten baserunners in 3 1/3 innings for Maverick Lasker -- he'll be on the hook barring a comeback and needs a reliever to pick up that 2nd and 3rd, one-out situation, would have been nice to have Jeremy Jeffress still on the squad for manager Jeff Isom...

Still just 18 years old, Angels super-stud Mike Trout (stats) stole his 40th base in 47 attempts; through four trips to the plate, the Rattlers have eight base hits including doubles for Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris (two RBI), and Chris Dennis (one RBI); D'Vontrey Richardson, Cutter Dykstra and Dennis already each have two hits; the bottom three in the order (Erik Miller, Austin Stockfisch, and Michael Marseco) a combined 0-for-6, which explains only three runs on the board despite the previously mentioned offensive output -- Rattlers have stranded five through four innings...

Final: Tennessee (Cubs) 6, Huntsville 4

Stars fall victim to walk-off blast on Independence Day

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Robinson Chirinos hit a three-run homer off Eddie Morlan in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Tennessee Smokies (8-5, 50-32) to a 6-3 win over the Huntsville Stars (5-8, 38-45) on Independence Day.

It was the Smokies who got on the board first when Stars’ starter Mark Rogers struggled with his control in the first inning. The hard-throwing right hander walked the first two batters of the game before bouncing back to strike-out Matthew Spencer. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet and Stars’ killer Blake Lalli singled to left to score Tony Campana (audio).

Rogers settled down despite walking another batter in the first and five in the game. The Lalli single would be the only offense the Smokies could muster as he went five innings, giving up the lone run and striking out six.

Lucas Luetge relieved Rogers in the sixth and surrendered a run on a bizarre play. With one away Josh Vitters singled and Brandon Guyer doubled. Luetge struck out Nate Sampson, only to have the ball bounce away from Dayton Buller and Vitters came in to make the score 2-0. The Stars argued that the ball had gone off the bat of Sampson to no avail.

Tony Thomas gave Tennessee some insurance with a solo blast to lead-off the seventh (audio).

The Stars mounted a furious rally against reliever Aaron Shafer in the eighth. Back-to-back singles from Caleb Gindl and Zelous Wheeler set up Drew Anderson with a RBI opportunity. The powerful lefty did not disappoint as he doubled to center to score both runners (audio). Taylor Green bunted him to third and Steffan Wilson drove him home with a ground-out (audio).

With the game tied, the Stars called upon Morlan who tossed a scoreless eighth. But the ninth inning did not go as well as Tony Thomas doubled with one away. With two away, the Stars walked Lalli to set up a play at any base. The move back-fired when Chirinos went yard to end the game (audio).

The Stars will try to even the series as they send Amaury Rivas to the mound Monday night. Join us on the Stars Radio Network beginning at 6:00 PM central time with the Window World Pre-Game Report.

Huntsville Box Score

82 pitches, 48 strikes for Mark Rogers in his five innings on this 90 degree early evening -- is he still being held back in terms of his full repertoire? Caleb Gindl raking -- third consecutive multi-hit game, double and single, on base four times here with two walks as well; Gindl stole his 5th base in eight attempts -- he was 18-for-22 with Brevard in 2009; Taylor Green with the start at first base, Zelous Wheeler at third, with Juan Sanchez at short; Sanchez is now 1-for-24 at the AA level, so that roster spot swap for Lorenzo Cain wasn't exactly exciting from a Stars' perspective; Brett Lawrie did not start, but went 0-for-2 after coming in on a double switch --sorry, all you Beat the Streak'ers...

Huntsville Game Log

Stars stranded 10 (1-for-9 with RISP) -- that stat can mis-lead sometimes, as Steffan Wilson's groundout was productive in this game...

Rogers walked three in the 1st and saved his own hide on a lineout -- then two more walks in the 5th, but escaped a bases-loaded jam...

Tennessee Bottom 1st

  • Tony Campana walks.
  • With Tony Thomas batting, Tony Campana steals (28) 2nd base.
  • Tony Thomas walks.
  • Matthew Spencer strikes out swinging.
  • With Blake Lalli batting, wild pitch by Mark Rogers, Tony Campana to 3rd. Tony Thomas to 2nd.
  • Blake Lalli singles on a line drive to left fielder Lee Haydel. Tony Campana scores. Tony Thomas to 3rd.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Robinson Chirinos walks. Blake Lalli to 2nd.
  • Josh Vitters lines out to pitcher Mark Rogers.
  • Brandon Guyer strikes out swinging.

Tennessee Bottom 3rd

  • Tony Thomas grounds out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler to first baseman Taylor Green.
  • Matthew Spencer strikes out swinging.
  • Blake Lalli walks.
  • Robinson Chirinos walks. Blake Lalli to 2nd.
  • Josh Vitters reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Juan Sanchez. Blake Lalli to 3rd. Robinson Chirinos to 2nd.
  • Brandon Guyer strikes out swinging.

Luetge struck out Nate Sampson, only to have the ball bounce away from Dayton Buller and Vitters came in to make the score 2-0. This is how the Knoxville News described it:

Tennessee doubled its lead after an unusual sequence in the sixth.

With two in scoring position, Nate Samson failed to check his swing on a breaking ball from Stars lefty reliever Lucas Luetge.

Huntsville catcher Dayton Buller couldn't handle the ball in the dirt, and Samson booted the ball on his way to first base.

Buller chased the ball down the line, but his throw hit Samson as he reached the bag, allowing Josh Vitters to score from third.
