Thank goodness I'm going to play MW2 now with some friends on Xbox, I REALLY hate the peanut promotion. Tune in to Steve in Helena, you'll hear it in the background all inning long.

Final: New Orleans 3, @Nashville 1

Sounds End Homestand With 3-1 Loss

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds ended their homestand on the short end of a 3-1 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a three-game series.

It was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday, as 9,575 fans took in the loss then watched the Sounds' Independence Day Weekend fireworks spectacular following the on-field action.

With the defeat, Nashville (44-38) suffered just its second home series loss of the season, dropping two of three to the Z's. The Sounds finished their homestand with a 4-3 mark.

New Orleans starter Tom Mastny (2-0) twirled an outstanding outing for the visitors, holding Nashville to just one run on four hits over seven strong innings. He walked two batters and struck out three in his quality start.

Outfielder Brendan Katin homered for the second straight night for Nashville to provide the club's lone run on the evening. The slugger leads the Sounds with 12 long balls this season.

Sounds starter Chase Wright worked into and out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the second inning. After Brett Carroll, Danny Richar, and Tim Torres opened the frame with three straight singles to jam the bags, the Nashville southpaw struck out Scott Cousins for the first out then induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 from Neil Wilson to escape the jam unscathed (audio available via this link).

The Zephyrs broke through against Wright an inning later, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

Mastny led off with a single, moved to third on a Gookie Dawkins double, and scored on Logan Morrison's sacrifice fly in foul territory. The next two runs scored on consecutive throwing errors by Nashville shortstop Ray Olmedo, who misfired to first on ground balls hit by Carroll and Richar. The second and third runs of the frame were unearned as a result of the miscues.

Katin put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a mammoth two-out homer the careened off the top of the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center field. The solo blast, which came on an 0-1 offering from Mastny, was Katin's team-leading 12th round tripper of the year.

Nashville put the potential tying runs on base in the ninth as Katin and Joe Koshansky drew back-to-back one-out walks from Matt Peterson. Dan Meyer was summoned from the New Orleans bullpen and induced a ground out from Olmedo for the second out before popping up Johnny Raburn to end the contest and nail down his first save of the season.

Wright (6-4) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits over his five innings of work.

The Sounds embark on an eight-day, nine-game road trip on Sunday as they head to Oklahoma City for a four-game series with the RedHawks (AAA-Rangers). Nashville will conclude the trip with a five-game stop in Memphis before heading into the Triple-A All-Star break.

Left-hander Sam Narron (2-3, 3.64) will start Sunday's 7:05 p.m. series opener at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark to face Oklahoma City right-hander Elizardo Ramirez (4-3, 5.53).

Baseball returns to Music City on Thursday, July 15, when the Sounds welcome the division-rival Omaha Royals to town for a four-game series.

Nashville box score

Mat Gamel was 1-3 with a walk and is now hitting .286/.373/.443 in 30 games with the Sounds this year. Lorenzo Cain was 0-4. Brandon Kintzler worked a perfect 9th with two strikeouts.

Final: @DSL Mariners 3, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers box score

Second straight day with a you-don't-see-that-every-day-in-the-DSL performance--this time it's 19-year-old Eduard Reyes going seven innings while striking out ten and walking none. Unfortunately, he allowed two runs on five hits, which was two too many today. Jose Pena was the only Brewer on base more than one, pulling out of his slump a bit with a single and a double in four trips. Personal favorites Ruben Sanchez and Carlos Pena were 0-3 with a walk and 0-2 with a walk, respectively. Hitaniel Arias was 0-4 with two strikeouts, Andres Martinez was 1-4 with two strikeouts, and Jose R. Garcia did not play.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Mariners scored their first run on a double-steal in the 2nd; Reyes surrendered a solo home run in the 6th for his other run allowed...

AZL Brewers box score

Nice pitching. Dan Britt got the start and went five innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out three. Eric Arnett took the last four frames, fanning three, walking two, and surrendering two safeties. Yadiel Rivera smacked two doubles--the first two extra-base hits of his career--as part of a 3-5 night, and 2009 draftees Max Walla and Tyler Roberts both homered. Nick Shaw was very effective in the leadoff spot, reaching base four times the strength of a single, two walks, and a HBP and also stealing a base. T.J. Mittelstaedt has only six hits thus far in his first pro season, but three of them are triples.

Final, 11 Innings: Missoula (D-Backs) 7, Helena 6

Helena Boxscore

I say boohiss not only to losing to Missoula and their peanut promotion, but losing in extra. Seth Lintz was the starter and predictably his innings were eventful. His ERA is up over 12 but the good news is that it's coming down and he actually gave up less runs than innings pitched this time out. Evan Frederickson followed him and pitched 3 innings giving up 1 ER while walking 3 and striking out 6. Brian Garman took the loss on a horrible defensive play in extra. Reggie Keen was 2-6, Shea Vucinich continues to be a monster going 3-5 with a 3B/HR/BB, Cody Hawn was 2-6 with a double, and John Dishon was 2-5 with a 2B. The Brewers committed 3 errors in the contest but Gerald Ogrinic did pick off a runner at 1B.

Final, 14 Innings: Burlington (Royals) 7, Wisconsin 6

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers hit four home runs and rallied from deficits of 4-1

and 5-4 Saturday night at Community Field. But, the Burlington Bees defeated the

Rattlers 7-6 in 14 innings to sweep the three game series.

Drew Robertson's RBI single in the bottom of the fourteenth ended the

game and sent Wisconsin to 0-10 in extra innings.

The Bees (27-51 overall, 5-4

second half) scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to grab

a 3-0 lead. Jose Bonilla and JD

Alfaro had RBI doubles in the second and third innings respectively.

Rene Oriental tripled to lead off the fourth inning.

He scored on the play when the throw to third wound up in the Burlington

dugout.

Cutter Dykstra got the Rattlers

(30-47, 4-5) on the board with a leadoff homer in the top of the fifth.

But, Alfaro struck again in the

bottom of the fifth. He leadoff the

Burlington half of the inning with his second home run of the season to put the

Bees in front 4-1.

Wisconsin used the long ball in

the top of the sixth inning to tie the game.

D'Vontrey Richardson walked to start the inning.

Then, Gennett lined a home run off the scoreboard above the wall in

right-center field. One out later,

Hunter Morris cleared the wall in left-center to tie the game 4-4.

The home run by Morris, a 4th round pick of the Milwaukee

Brewers out of Auburn University in the 2010 draft, was his first as a

professional.

Rattlers starting pitcher Nick

Bucci left after a scoreless bottom of the sixth.

He struck out eight and walked three, but he was not involved in the

decision.

Burlington went back in front

in the bottom of the seventh inning. Slugger

Carlo Testa stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and one out.

He dragged a bunt up the first base line on a safety squeeze to get the

run in that put the Bees up 5-4.

Khris Davis had the answer for

the Rattlers. The reigning Midwest

League Home Run Derby Champion drilled the first offering from Rodolfo

Encarnacion over the batters' eye beyond the wall in center field.

Davis's twelfth homer of the season tied the game 5-5.

The Rattlers took their first

lead of the night thanks to four straight walks by Burlington reliever Onasis

Sirrett in the top of the twelfth. Morris

drew the bases loaded free pass to force in the go ahead run.

But, Burlington came back in

the bottom of the twelfth. Two

singles and a walk against Rattlers reliever Andy Sauter loaded the bases with

one out for the Bees. Sauter walked

Hilton Richardson to force in the tying run.

Wisconsin extended the game by

going to a five infielder alignment with Gerard Hall at the plate.

Davis came in from left field to play third.

Dykstra shuffled to play short and shortstop Michael Marseco moved in

front of the second base bag. Hall

sent a high chopper over the mound and Marseco threw home for the force out.

Sauter concluded the inning by striking out Alfaro to send the game to

the thirteenth.

In the bottom of the

fourteenth, Sauter walked Luis Del Rosario to start the inning.

Del Rosario entered the game as a pinch runner in the bottom of the tenth

inning. A sacrifice bunt, the sixth

of the game by the Bees, moved Del

Rosario into scoring position. Robertson

put an end to the game - and extended the extra innings misery for the

Rattlers - by singling to right on a 1-0 pitch.

Del Rosario raced home and beat the throw to send the Bees to their fifth

straight victory.

Wisconsin continues their road

trip by starting a series at Cedar Rapids on Sunday evening.

Maverick Lasker (5-3, 2.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the

Rattlers. Garrett Richards (6-4,

3.69) is set to go for the Kernels. Game

time from Perfect Game Field is 5:05pm. You

may tune into the game on AM1280, WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com

starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:45pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Another day, another 1 run loss, and of course the extra innings futility streak continues. From a peripheral standpoint, Nick Bucci had one of his better statistical efforts of the season. Not mentioned the summary were Mat Costello who went 2.2 IP giving up 1 run on 5 hits and John Pokorny who hrew 2.1 innings of scoreless ball while walking 1 and striking out 5. Scooter Gennett was 3-6 with a 2B/HR and Hunter Morris was 2-4 including that HR mentioned above. No other T-Rat had multiple hits in this 14 inning contest. D'Vo was picked off yet again.. someone needs to teach that young man how to read a pitcher.

Wisconsin Recap

Other than the 4 HRs, nothing to write home about. Small ball didn't pay off in the 11th.

Wisconsin Top 11th

  • Luis Del Rosario remains in the game as the designated hitter.
  • Pitcher Change: Mitch Hodge Nielsen replaces Ryan Dennick.

Cutter Dykstra goes yard, and now has an OBP of .402 - don't write him off yet.

Congrats to Hunter Morris and Max Walla on their first dingers of the year.

Pokorny in 37 IP has given up 26 hits, 12 BB, and K'd 57. He hasn't started a game though - does he profile strictly as a reliever, or is it a numbers game because of Odorizzi/Heckathorn/Bucci/Lasker/Howell?

MISSOULA, MT - The Missoula Osprey have a flair for the dramatic on 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza Nights, and went all sorts of dramatic on the largest crowd to ever watch an Osprey baseball game on Saturday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

After letting a four-run lead slip away, the Osprey scored the tying run with two out in the bottom of the ninth, and scored the game-winner in the 11th, to beat the Helena Brewers, 7-6, in front of an Osprey-record 4,076 fans.

Eric Groff scored both of the key runs for the Osprey (5-8), dashing home from third on a wild pitch with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, then scoring from second when a throw to first from Helena second baseman Connor Lind went wide of the bag on a potential double-play ball with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Groff - who went 3-for-6 on the night - singled off of Brewers reliever Brian Garman (1-1) to lead off the home half of the 11th, then moved to second on a Bobby Stone single.

Robby Rowland, who earlier in the game had extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a solo home run, then hit a ground ball to short. Helena shortstop Shea Vucinich took the slow roller and threw to second to force Stone, who slid hard into the bag and forced Lind into the wild throw. Groff scored on the play and the Osprey had a walk-off win.

The Brewers (9-4) appeared as if they were going to rally once again against the Osprey - they won three of four games in their sweep of the season-opening series between the two teams by rallying for a win from the seventh inning on, including two walk-off wins. Down 5-1, the Brewers scored three times in the top of the eighth, and twice more in the top of the ninth, to take a 6-5 lead.

Groff, however, would help spoil the party, leading off the home half of the ninth with a double and then moving to third on a Stone groundout. With two out, and pinch-hitter Zac Varnell at the plate, Garman threw a wild pitch, scoring Groff to tie the game.

Victor Lara (1-2), the fourth pitcher used by the Osprey, pitched the 11th, allowing two walks but getting a big strikeout to end the threat and pick up the win on the mound.

The Osprey will host the Brewers in the second of a four-game series on Sunday beginning at 5:00 PM (6:00 Central) at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Right-hander J.R. Bradley will get the start for Missoula, while right-hander Matt Miller gets the call for Helena.

Osprey outlast Brewers in 11

By BILL SPELTZ of the Missoulian

A record-breaking crowd watched two forms of fireworks Saturday night at Ogren-Allegiance Park.

The second involved pyrotechnics and complimentary 3-D glasses. The first produced the biggest win of the young season for the Missoula Osprey.

Eric Groff singled and scored on an infield throwing error in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the O's a thrilling 7-6 win over the Helena Brewers in front of 4,076 fans. Closer Victor Lara (1-2) picked up his first win on the mound after working himself out of a jam in the top of the 11th.

"The way we fought back just shows we have the heart," said Groff, whose team forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth. "We can go out any night and beat any team.

"They (Helena) might be the top team in the league right now, but we're gunning for them."

The Osprey boosted their record to 5-8 in Pioneer League action. The Brewers saw their league-best record fall to 9-4.

Missoula looked well on its way to a comfortable win with a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the eighth inning. Osprey starter Kevin Eichhorn was impressive through six frames, holding the Brewers to just one run on five hits while striking out five.

Missoula scored in each of the first three innings. Richie Rowland's solo home run in the third gave the O's a 4-0 advantage.

The Brewers finally got on the board in the sixth inning, but Missoula answered with a run in the bottom half. Chris Jarrett legged out a leadoff triple and scored on a double steal with two outs.

Helena did most of its offensive damage in the eighth and ninth innings against Osprey relievers Justin Albert and Will Harvil. Albert surrendered three runs in the eighth and Harvil two in the ninth as the Brewers took a 6-5 lead.

Missoula knotted the score at 6-6 on a Groff run in the bottom of the ninth. He led off the inning with a double, advanced on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

Lara came on in the top of the 11th and got in a jam when he walked two Helena hitters with two outs. But he regrouped, striking out John Bivens to end the threat.

Groff led off the bottom of the 11th with a slow-rolling single up the middle. Bobby Stone followed with a base hit to give the O's runners on first and second.

Richie Rowland then hit a ground ball to shortstop Shea Vucinich that appeared tailor-made for a double play. But Helena second baseman Connor Lind's throw hit the dirt on its way to first and skidded past first baseman Cody Hawn, enabling Groff to score easily.

"We're starting to want it a lot more," Groff said. "Our pitching staff is doing well, fielding-wise we're coming around and we're hitting the ball."

Groff paced the Osprey with three hits and two runs scored. Jarrett had a double, triple and two runs scored.

The Osprey will play host to Helena again Sunday at 5:00 PM (6:00 Central).

Stars' rally falls short

The Huntsville Stars (5-7, 38-44) scored four runs in the seventh inning to draw within one, but left the tying run in scoring position in the ninth as they dropped the series finale to the Chattanooga Lookouts (8-4, 42-40) by a final score of 7-6.

The Lookouts got to Michael Bowman in the second inning as Corey Smith led-off with a double; two outs later Jaime Pedroza singled him home.

But the Stars bounced back in the bottom of the frame thanks to an unexpected power source. Drew Anderson picked up where he left off on Friday with a single up the middle. Two outs later, Andy Machado crushed a ball over the left field fence for his first homer of the year.

The 2-1 lead held up for Bowman (7-7) until the top of the sixth. Trayvon Robinson tied things up with a homer to left but the Lookouts didn’t stop there. One out later Corey Smith reached base on an excuse-me single to shallow right field. Andrew Lambo followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Eddie Perez hit a grounder to Steffan Wilson at first; Wilson fired home but Smith beat the tag to give the Lookouts a 3-2 lead. Jaime Pedroza chased Bowman from the game with a single to center, making the score 4-2 Lookouts.

Mark Willinsky entered and got the final two outs, but he suffered his own meltdown in the seventh. With one away Robinson got things going again with a single to center. He quickly swiped second base and advanced to third thanks to a low throw into center field from catcher Sean McCraw. Jerry Sands made the play irrelevant by blasting a two-run homer, making the score 6-2 Lookouts. Back-to-back singles from Smith and Lambo were followed by an Eddie Perez RBI double. After Willinsky intentionally walked Jaime Pedroza, Donovan Hand entered the game and coaxed a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The 7-2 deficit seemed imposing, but the Stars rallied in the bottom of the frame. Brent Leach had been dominant all night, but he walked Anderson to lead-off the inning. Wilson walked as well and a Lee Haydel bunt moved both runners over 90 feet. Machado struck out and Leach looked like he was going to get out of the inning with no damage.

Sean McCraw had different plans. He doubled to deep right-center, scoring both runners to make the score 7-4. Justin Miller entered the game and immediately gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Taylor Green. The throw to the plate got away from catcher Jessie Mier or else McCraw would have been out at home. Green advanced to second and scored when Caleb Gindl singled after Brett Lawrie had walked.

That made the score 7-6 and chased Miller from the game.

But the Stars couldn’t put another run across. In the ninth, Machado singled to lead off the inning and McCraw bunted him to second. Unfortunately Taylor Green struck out and Lawrie popped out on a 3-0 pitch to end the game.

Huntsville Times:

"We just fell short," said Huntsville manager Mike Guerrero, whose team begins a road trip at Tennessee tonight. "We got five runs behind when they scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh. We were able to put together a rally ... (but) it was just one of those games."
