Guys who are gone come September

I think the point is to be open to trade whomever the trading partner deems their target for pitching. It isn't out of the real of possibility the trading partner could value McGehee more than Hart if they have a hole at 3rd Base and not in a corner OF spot. Or they could come to the same conclusion your posts do, McGehee is cheap and under control for a few more years unlike Hart.

The Brewers have to listen to offers for anyone and can't declare guys like McGehee off limits if he is who a team wants, especially with Gamel waiting. No one is sayinig trade McGehee for a bag of balls and bucket of chewing gum but you have to give to get and trading from a position of depth (2 3rd baseman) isn't the worse thing if that is what a team wants.

You could get more by trading Corey Hart. Hart is much more expensive and is only under control for a year. Or you could move McGehee to first after trading Fielder.

Why can't we deal both? One has nothing to do with the other. McGehee shouldn't be moved to 1st either. He's not good enough. Braun could be an option for 1st, as he might defend that position better than he butchers LF.

We could sign a free agent position player. The history of success doing that is much better than doing what Melvin does when he constantly signs FA pitchers, which has historically been terrible for everyone.

Vinny Castilla once led the league in RBI despite hitting .271 and having a 109 OPS+. RBI is mostly tied to slugging with men on base. That's why Hart wasn't really terrible in 2008, which is just useless hyperbole. Sure, he had a .300 OBP, which some people will focus on and assume that the player must have been terrible. But he did have a decent slugging, and he had 502 PA batting 5th that year, so we was going to get opportunities. He also produced in those opprortunities, with an .840 OPS with men in RISP.

I'm all for trading EVERYONE except Gallardo, Braddock, Loe and Axford. The problem with this team is pitching and defense. We have hitters but who cares when they give up just as many runs on the field as they hit in. Buyers or sellers? Are you kidding me? This team, the way it is constructed will not finish anywhere near .500. You have to be blind not to see that. We have too many players with the same skill set. Lots of power, little else. If Melvin was smart, he would sell, sell, sell if he can get any decent value. Hoffman, Hart, Villy, Coffey, Wolf and Bush should all be gone at the trading deadline. Prince will make it through the year before we get full value in any trade. Would love to see Davis go too but that is a pipe dream. Minor leaguers should go too if we need to package them in deals to get young talented pitchers. If Lawrie and Gamel can not be an adequate defenders next year, I would trade them too. Package as many as you can to get good young pitching with higher ceilings and none of this potential #3 or #4 starters in return. We have a lot of #4 starters already. We need 2 more upper echelon pitchers to go along with Gallardo. You would think with Prince, Hart, McGehee, Weeks, Villy, Lawrie, etc., we should be able to get the two really good young pitchers. Then use the money we save to sign a legit in their prime good FA pitcher. Build a staff, then surround them with average to above average defenders and worry about hitting later. Bottom line is we give away way too many runs with bad pitching and bad defense.
