Final: Wisconsin 4, Quad Cities 1

Davis, Davis, & Rattlers top River Bandits

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers stopped a brief two-game slide with a 4-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits Wednesday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Doug Davis pitched well in a seven inning rehab start and picked up the win. Kentrail Davis had three hits, including a big home run late in the game for Wisconsin.

Cutter Dykstra and Chris Dennis combined for a two-out Timber Rattlers rally in the bottom of the second inning. Dykstra doubled with two outs and nobody on base. Dennis followed with a single to right and Dykstra scored for a 1-0 lead.

Davis kept the River Bandits (44-31 overall, 4-2 second half) off the scoreboard over the first five innings. But, in the sixth, Devin Goodwin tripled with one out. Edgar Lara followed with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1.

Wisconsin (30-44, 4-2) charged back in front in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Cameron Garfield’s one-out single drove in the go-ahead run. But, that was the only run the Rattlers could manage in the inning.

Davis pitched around a pair of walks in the top of the seventh inning with help from an inning ending 4-6-3 double play. He tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, walked three, hit one, and struck out four to put himself in line for the win.

Efrain Nieves relieved Davis and walked the leadoff batter in the top of the eighth. But, another double play, the third of the game turned by the Rattlers defense stifled the Quad Cities rally.

Scooter Gennett started the Wisconsin eighth inning with a double. Kentrail Davis followed with a home run that curled around the foul pole in right field for a two-run homer and a 4-1 Wisconsin lead. The long ball was the second of the season for Davis, who has driven in 11 runs in his 11 games with the Timber Rattlers.

Nieves worked around an error and a walk in the top of the ninth inning to close out the Bandits and pick up his first save of the season.

The Timber Rattlers hit the road for a nine-game road trip that starts on Thursday night. Wisconsin will take on the Burlington Bees at Community Field. Kyle Heckathorn (6-4, 2.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Keaton Hayenga (1-6, 9.37) is the scheduled start for the Bees.

Game time is 6:30pm. Fans may tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Wisconsin box score

Must be a trip for Hunter Morris, who was playing college baseball a month ago, to be on the field with a major leaguer (Morris was 0-4). Doug Davis threw 96 pitches, 63 for strikes--not quite the same nibbler against A-ball hitters. Gennett added a single to his double, and Dykstra also walked and was hit by a pitch. Dennis also had a double. D'Vontrey Richardson was 1-4, Khris Davis 0-3 with a walk, and Cameron Garfield 2-4.

The Stars win game one, 1-0, on a bases-loaded one-out walkoff single by pinch-hitter Chuckie Caufield, allowing a dominant Amaury Rivas to get the win.

Much more in the way of details later on, but just wanted to note that 3B Taylor Green left the game in the 4th, it's difficult to ascertain the nature of the injury via the log, perhaps the Huntsville game reports will clue us in.

It's 8:05 Central and the Manatees are tied 3-3 as the 7th inning stretch arrives, so this is a chance to listen to the end of a tight game before perhaps heading to Huntsville or Helena to cap your night.

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 3

Cubs drop finale against Brevard

Christian Bruey/Daytona Cubs

VIERA, FL - The Daytona Cubs (5-2, 39-38) did not complete the sweep of

the Brevard County Manatees (3-4, 30-46) on Wednesday night as they fell

by the score of 5-3. The Cubs out-hit the Manatees twelve to eight but

could not score the runs to complete the four-game sweep.

The Cubs got on the board first on Wednesday night. Catcher Michael

Brenly smacked a solo home run well over the right field wall to give

Daytona a 1-0 lead. It was the fourth home run of the season for Brenly

and his third in the last seven games.

Daytona made it 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Middle infielders

David Macias and Junior Lake started the frame with back-to-back infield

singles. They were sacrificed up 90 feet by Jose Valdez. Third baseman

DJ LeMahieu picked up an RBI as he grounded out to second base.

The Manatees answered back with a run in the bottom of the third inning

and then two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Both runs in the

bottom of the fourth inning were unearned against Cubs starter Dae-Eun

Rhee.

The Cubs tied the game at three in the top of the fifth inning. Center

fielder Jose Valdez reached on a fielder's choice after Junior Lake

reached on an infield single. DJ LeMahieu singled and then designated

hitter Ryan Flaherty walked to load the bases. First baseman Rebel

Ridling grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in Valdez.

The Manatees re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as

they plated two more runs. David Patton (2-4) came in the game and

could not find the strike zone. Patton gave up the two runs off of two

hits and three walks. Patton was the losing pitcher of record with Trey

Watten (1-5) picking up his first win of the season. Andre Lamontagne

came into the game in the ninth and the Cubs had the bases loaded with

only one man out. Unfortunately, Daytona could not plate any runners

and Lamontagne collected his second save in 2010.

Brevard County box score

Dan Merklinger started for the Manatees and allowed three runs in five innings on eight hits and a walk, striking out just one. It's been a tough season for Merklinger, whom I fancied as a bit of a sleeper entering the year. Watten tossed three scoreless frames, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Josh Prince's double was the only extra-base hit for BC; Prince also walked and stole his 24th base. Erik Komatsu (two singles), Angel Salome (single and walk), Brock Kjeldgaard (two walks), and Scott Krieger (single and walk) all reached base twice. Shawn Zarraga walked once in four trips, and Sean Halton tallied a single.

Brevard County play-by-play

Here's Lamontagne's adventure:

Daytona Top 9th

  • Jake Opitz flies out to
    center fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • David Macias singles on a ground
ball to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Junior Lake hit by
    pitch. David Macias to 2nd.
  • Mark Reed singles on a
line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. David Macias to 3rd.
    Junior Lake to 2nd.
  • DJ LeMahieu pops out to first baseman Sean
    Halton in foul territory.
  • Ryan Flaherty strikes out swinging.

Final: Billings 4, Helena 3

Brewers fall short against Billings

Brett/Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (8-2) suffered their second loss of the season (first home loss) Wednesday night at Kindrick Field against the Billings Mustangs (3-7).

The Brewers got on the board first, scoring a run in the second and third inning. Three walks and a hit batsman brought in Helena's first run in the second inning.

Mike Walker hit his first home run of the season to make it a 2-0 game in the third.

The Mustangs scored one in the fifth to cut the deficit in half and three in the seventh to take the 4-2 lead.

The Brewers fought back in the ninth inning, as the always do, but fell ninety feet short. Tony Pechek led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Connor Lind. A few pitches later Peckek made it to third on a ball that got away from Billings' catcher, Tucker Barnhart, but that was as far as he would get.

Stosh Wawrzasek started on the mound for the Brewers tonight. He went 4.2 innings allowing only a run.

Ryan Bernal, a 23rd round draft choice from Florida Atlantic, suffered the loss. He left the game after 1.2 innings of work.

The Brewers now travel to Billings to play a two more games against the Mustangs Thursday and Friday. Action will return to Kindrick Field next Wednesday as the Brewers take on the Great Falls Voyagers. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 with gates opening at 6:00.

Helena box score

Wawrzasek did, however, allow a ton of baserunners--seven hits and two walks, while only striking out two. Adrian Rosario worked the final 2.2 innings for the H-Crew, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk, fanning two. Walker also doubled in addition to his homer. Carlos George singled twice in five at-bats, and Johnny Dishon was 1-3 with a walk. Greg Hopkins (0-3, BB) and Shea Vucinich (0-4) cooled off. Franklin Romero struck out four times in five trips (but did contribute by throwing a runner out at home), and John Bivens, off to a really tough start to his pro career, whiffed three of four times.

Helena play-by-play

The Brewers put the tying run on third with one out in the 9th but came up empty:

Helena Bottom 9th

  • Tony Pechek walks.
  • Connor
Lind out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Jonathan Kaskow to second
baseman David Vidal. Tony Pechek to 2nd.
  • With Carlos George
batting, wild pitch by Porfirio Martinez, Tony Pechek to 3rd.
  • Carlos
George grounds out to first baseman Jonathan Kaskow.
  • Franklin
    Romero strikes out swinging.

AZL Brewers box score

Venezuelan righty Francisco Rivero, one of the few graduates from last year's DSL squad, turned in a very strong outing, tossing five scoreless innings while surrendering just a single hit and striking out five. After a sterling debut, Michael Schaub, the 38th-round mystery man from this year's draft, had a tough encore, allowing four runs while only recording one out--he walked three and hit two. Fortunately, the Baby Brewers' bats were more than strong enough to overcome that hiccup and run their record to a stunning 9-0. Max Walla, hitting sixth for whatever reason, had a perfect night, 3-3 with a double, walk, and HBP. Demetrius McKelvie smacked his first homer of the year as part of his two-hit night, and Kenny Allison chipped in with three singles in six trips. Puerto Rican shortstop Yadiel Rivera, one of only two draftees younger than Schaub, was 1-5 with a walk.

After the All-Star AA break is there anymore reason for Rivas to not be moved up?? My guess is that they won't move him because they like to baby a lot a pitchers. Rivas is on the the 40 man, get him up to AAA and let him pitch there. Come September if he is doing well call him up and give a few innings (doesn't have to be starts). Get our top pitchers a chance to compete for next year. Heckathorn should already have 2 or 3 starts in A+ to make sure he is in AA next year and Rivas in AAA to have him in competition for a 4th or 5th spot next year with the club. Odorizzi and Lasker are both only 20 so I don't them sitting in A ball all season but Heckathorn is already 22 and Rivas I believe is 24, they can handle a bump.

Man this Jose Cepeda has pitched really well for the DSL I wonder what kind of prospect he could be. Doesn't have the size nor the strikeout rate right now but im curious about him.

Lawrie has really started to cut down the K's lately and I am really starting to believe he may be something special. Is it a stetch to believe he may hit AAA this season? With seeing what the Brewers are doing with Cain I think it may be. Still hard to believe Cain as only been playing baseball for about 8 or 9 years. He may be a guy who doesn't completely click and reach his potential until 26 or 27. Hard and even scary to imagine with the way he has played that he may still have that much more room to grow as a player.

21-year-old 3B Joey Paciorek, on the Wisconsin DL for nearly two months with what must have been a pretty serious hand contusion, got the rehab start with Maryvale last evening -- a single and a walk in four plate appearances before calling it a night. With Cutter Dykstra's emergence, playing time back in Appleton could be an issue without some player movement.

DSL Brewers Box Score

This is how you determine who gets the prime time at this level -- Brewers' brass watched 20-year-old 6'0" RHP Jose Cepeda shine in six relief appearances to start the season, and now he's in the rotation, with this being his second start -- in 30.1 IP, he has a BAA of only .154 to go along with his 0.89 ERA, probably some luck involved with 13 walks and 22 K's on the season; Cepeda tossed eight scoreless in this outing, allowing a double, three singles, and three walks; this was a worthy-of-big-league-comparison matchup with clean defense on both sides, as future Mariner LHP Henry Perez now has a 37-to-3 K-to-BB ratio in just four starts and 27 innings -- he struck out 11 Brewers and walked none and now has an ERA of 1.00; the Brewers did manage nine hits, as Ronny Puello was 3-for-4 as the DH, and CF Ruben Sanchez (.926 OPS, team MVP to this point) and 1B Hitaniel Arias each singled twice; as noted above, new signee Raul Mondesi, Jr., not 18 years old until August, made his debut, grounding out as a pinch-hitter -- he's listed at 5'10", 182 a RH bat like his dad, who was only 5'11" himself -- funny how you remember taller -- hope he has the same gun for an arm...

LF Jose Garcia's lone hit, and the D-Crew's only extra-base hit, was a big one --

Final, Game One: Huntsville 1, Chattanooga (Dodgers) 0

Final, Game Two: Huntsville 5, Chattanooga 4Twice in one day against Chattanooga...Stars walk-off as winners

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Double Header Audio Recap-- nice work from the Huntsville staff, even includes audio quotes from Chuckie Caufield and Steffan Wilson as well as the two game-winning calls, very professionally done, guys

Steffan Wilson went 5-6, Amaury Rivas tossed a gem in game one, and Chuckie Caufield and Andy Machado provided the late heroics as the Huntsville Stars (4-5) swept the Chattanooga Lookouts (6-3) in Wednesday’s double header.

In the first game of the twin bill, Rivas (7-5) took center stage as he threw a complete game shutout. The Lookouts managed only four hits in the seven-inning contest and Rivas walked a lone batter while striking out four.

In the bottom of the seventh, Huntsville’s to that point dormant offense came alive as Drew Anderson drew a leadoff walk. They played some small ball as Machado laid down a nice bunt that caused a throwing error from catcher and former big league Brewer Mike Rivera, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Wilson bunted as well and managed to beat it out for an infield single, loading the bases.

After Dayton Buller struck-out, Caufield stepped to the plate, pinch hitting for Rivas. The red-hot outfielder singled in the hole between short and third, driving home Anderson to win the game.

Timothy Sexton (3-7) pitched a complete game for the Lookouts but took the loss. Meanwhile Rivas’ second complete game of the year ties him with Tom Layne of Mobile for the most in the Southern League.

Huntsville Game One Box Score

Ten ground balls for Amaury Rivas, who won't dazzle us with K's, but he had better be on that 90-mile bus ride to Nashville right after the Southern League All-Star Game...

Huntsville Game One Game Log

Game two was not nearly as neat. Lookouts’ pitchers combined to walk 12 Stars hitters and three of the Lookouts’ four runs against the Stars were unearned.

The Stars got off to a great start, scoring two runs in the first on RBI singles from Machado and Wilson. These came after Lookouts’ starter Jordan Pratt walked the first three batters of the game.

Two of three batters Pratt walked in the first inning were Brett Lawrie and Lorenzo Cain. With two away in the second, he walked both of them again. The Stars proceeded to pull off a gutsy double steal and the throw to third base sailed into left field, allowing Lawrie to score and Cain to advance to third. Pratt walked Caleb Gindl again as well to put runners at the corners and chase him from the game. Chattanooga’s starter walked seven batters in only 1.2 innings of work.

New pitcher Justin Miller uncorked a wild pitch right away, allowing Cain to score and the Stars to extend their lead to 4-0.

But Huntsville’s sloppiness allowed the Lookouts to come back to tie the game. In the top of the fourth, Stars’ starter Lucas Luetge ran into trouble after having faced the minimum through the first three frames.

With one away, Trayvon Robinson singled to left. After a second out was recorded, Luetge uncorked a wild pitch, advancing Robinson to second base. Corey Smith, the Southern League’s RBI leader, hit a slow roller that Luetge fielded, but his throw was low and skipped past Wilson at first base. They ruled the play an infield single, with the error allowing Robinson to score and Smith to advance to second base.

He’d get out of the inning without any more damage, but wasn’t as fortunate in the fifth.

With one down, Luetge walked his first batter of the game when Jaime Pedroza drew a free pass. Jessie Mier followed with a sharp single up the middle. It appeared Luetge would get out of the inning unscathed when pinch hitter Eddie Perez hit a tailor-made double play ball to Machado at short, but the veteran infielder bobbled the ball and everyone was safe. A wild pitch made it 4-2 and with two away Trayvon Robinson delivered the big blow with a two RBI single to left, evening the score at four.

That was the end of the day for Luetge, who went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck-out three in the no-decision.

Eddie Morlan came on and got Jerry Sands to fly out to Gindl in right to end the inning.

Lookouts’ reliever Eric Krebs gave up a lead-off double to Wilson in the fifth and walked Andy Machado with one away, but he worked out of the jam thanks to a well-timed double play ball hit by Sean McCraw.

Krebs really got rolling in the sixth when he struck-out Anderson, Lawrie, and Cain in succession.

Meanwhile for the Stars, Jim Henderson replaced Morlan to pitch the top of the seventh and walked the leadoff man. But after striking out the next batter, he was the beneficiary of an awful bunt attempt by Krebs that went straight up in the air. The runner was going on the pitch so Henderson calmly got the ball and jogged to the first base bag to turn the unassisted double play.

Huntsville finally got to Krebs in the bottom of the seventh as with one out he hit Zelous Wheeler. Wilson followed that with the 11th Stars’ walk of the contest to put runners at first and second. Lee Haydel loaded the bases by slapping a single to left.

That’s when Andy Machado redeemed himself. He’d made the crucial error back in the fifth, but against Krebs he drew the 12th walk of the game, driving in Wheeler and the Stars quite literally walked off with the win.

Huntsville looks to take game four of the six game set Thursday night as they’ll send Josh Butler (1-4, 4.70) to the mound. You can hear all the action starting at 6:45 PM central time with the Window World Pre-Game Report on the Stars Radio Network.

Huntsville Game Two Box Score

Too bad only 715 took advantage, Helena and the Manatees drew more; hope Taylor Green is OK, as noted early on in this thread, left game one...

Davis helps himself, Timber Rattlers with solid rehab outing in victory over Quad Cities

By Mike Woods, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — If the guys who want to take his job someday learned one thing from Doug Davis on Wednesday, it was what it means to be a professional.

"Results always mean something to me," said Davis, making his final rehab start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium before rejoining the Milwaukee Brewers and an expected return to the starting rotation next week against San Francisco.

"Whether it's A ball, Rookie ball, Triple-A, it doesn't matter," said Davis, 35, who was making his third rehab start after two earlier ones in Triple-A Nashville. "The fact that you're going out there competing and giving your team a chance to win, that's what your job is. Whether it's in the big leagues or the minor leagues, it doesn't matter.

"These guys behind you are playing 100 percent. You don't want to go out there and say I don't care if I give up seven (runs); I just want to get my work in. These guys care. They want to be in the playoffs. They want to be a good team for I know how long the season is when you're on a losing team. It's terribly long. It's no fun that way."

The day turned out great for the Rattlers, as Davis threw seven innings — giving an overworked Rattlers bullpen some much-needed rest — and picked up a 4-1 victory over Quad Cities.

For Davis, he was mostly pleased. He threw 96 pitches — he was on a 100-pitch limit —before admittedly tiring in the sixth inning.

He gave up one run on six hits, walked three, struck out four and hit one batter. Three of those hits and two walks came in his final two innings of work.

"I didn't get much sleep beforehand," he said. "I got up at 7 a.m. I'm used to waking up at noon. But I chose to come here to pitch. I knew the routine."

He said he has completely overcome the bout of pericarditis — an inflammation of the lining around his heart — that not only put him on the disabled list but frightened him like nothing else.

"It has heart attack symptoms," he said. "My jaw, upper back, left arm … but being left-handed my left arm hurts all the time. But it had all the symptoms of having a heart attack. So, in a sense, I thought I was having a heart attack. I'm not young in baseball but I don't think I'm old enough to have a heart attack right now. But I think I take care of my body a lot better."

Davis took 12 Advil a day until the symptoms cleared and now takes a single pill a day as a preventative measure.

To prepare for his return to the Brewers rotation, he asked to use Major League Baseballs on Wednesday instead of the minor league baseballs he used in his previous two rehab starts.

"Major league balls are harder, they're smaller, they're wound tighter," he said of the differences. "The laces are smaller, not as wide.

"Yeah, I think that in my last two starts, having the bigger laces and softer ball made have made it a little easier to pitch. Just because you get more action with a minor league ball, better curveballs, and have a better feel. And they're softer; they don't go as far."

He now returns to a Brewers' rotation that has stabilized somewhat recently, but is still in desperate need of quality starts and quality arms.

"I'm ready," said Davis. "It's just a matter of them finding a place for me. They're playing well. I don't want to mess with a winning situation.

"I understand what's going on and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. As long as I show I'm healthy, I don't care where they put me."

Lutz’s 4 RBIs halts Brewers’ streak

By CURT SYNNESS, Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers’ six-game home win streak at Kindrick Field came to an end as Billings Mustangs designated hitter Donald Lutz powered the visitors to a close 4-3 win on Wednesday before a crowd of 798.

Trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, the left-handed hitting Mustangs’ clean-up hitter crushed a three-run homer over the right field fence, bringing home Billy Hamilton and Jefry Sierra with what turned out to be the difference.

Lutz, who went 2 for 5 on the night, also drove in Billings’ initial tally in the fifth.

The Magic City squad used three pitchers — Tanner Robles, Pat Doyle and Poirfirio Martinez — to limit the Brewers to six hits. Doyle fanned six Brewers in his three-inning stint.

Helena, which was 6-0 at home before being shaded Wednesday, slips to 8-2, while Billings moves to 3-7.

The Cincinnati Reds’ farm team pounded out 13 base knocks, led by Letz, Jonathan Kaskow (3-4), Hamilton (2-4, two runs), Tucker Barnhart (2-4) and Oliver Santos (2-5, double).

Stosh Wawrzasek, a 6-foot-1, 225-pounder from Langley, British Columbia, started on the bump for the hosts. He went 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and one run, before giving way to Ryan Bernal. Bernal was tabbed with the loss.

Manager Joe Ayrault’s Brewers started out on top, taking a 2-0 lead after three innings. Their first tally in the second came on three walks and a hit batsman. The home team’s second score was compliments of a blast by first baseman Mike Walker in the third stanza. Walker drilled a solo home run that traveled over 400 feet, crashing off the scoreboard in left centerfield.

He finished the night with two hits, later driving a double to the gap in left in the sixth. Carlos George also had two hits for the Capital City group.

Helena closed to within one in the seventh frame, when Franklin Romero, Jr.’s RBI single plated George.

The Brewers came within 90 feet of tying it up in their last at-bat, but Tony Pechek was stranded on third when Martinez struck Romero out to end the game.

The Brewers’ defense turned in several web gems on the evening. In the second inning, center fielder Romero electrified the home crowd when he threw out Santos at the plate, who was trying to score from second on David Vidal’s single.

Second baseman Connor Lind made a great play in the fifth, ranging far to his left for a ball in the gap, sliding and gloving it, and then spinning to his feet and firing to first to get his man.

Brewers third baseman Greg Hopkins, meanwhile, made several Brooks Robinson-type plays at the hot corner.
