Final, Game One: DSL Mariners 3, DSL Brewers 2, 12 innings (scheduled for seven)

Yes, there was a twinbill today -- managers love extra innings for doubleheaders...

DSL Brewers Game One Box Score

Actually, two familiar DSL mound names allowed Manager Nestor Corredor to save the bullpen; 6'7" lefty Eliezer Montano (we are contractually obligated to mention that he's 6'7" every time out) allowed only two runs, just one earned, over the first seven innings; 23-year-old RHP Rigoberto Almonte (we are likewise contractually obligated to note his age with each outing) followed up with five innings of his own, allowing only the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th; the Brewers managed only three singles, four walks, and an HBP in the game; OF Jose Garcia was 0-for-5 with four K's to drop his average after Game One to .169 (3 walks, 24 K's in 69 AB's); 2B Yonki Hernandez reached three times but is straddling the Mendoza line; the Brewers team OBP of .366 is actually 5th in the 33-team Dominican League -- 4th in walks, but 1st in strikeouts, so they're seeing lots of pitches...

DSL Brewers Game One Game Log

Talk about an awkward opening to the game -- a run scored without a base hit and before the second plate appearance was over -- that happens, like never, right? Call the Elias Bureau...

DSL Mariners Top 1st

Marbin Beltre hit by pitch.

With Efrain Nunez batting, Marbin Beltre steals (4) 2nd base.

With Efrain Nunez batting, Marbin Beltre steals (5) 3rd base, Marbin Beltre scores. Throwing error by catcher Carlos Pena.

Until the fateful top of the 12th, the teams had combined to retire 18 batters straight; the last 15 Brewers went down in order; the first "extra" inning, the 8th, presented close calls for both squads, but the game dragged on like a John Isner Wimbledon match --

DSL Mariners Top 8th

Joan Abreu remains in the game as the designated hitter.

Pitcher Change: Rigoberto Almonte replaces Eliezer Montano.

Ivan Brea walks.

George Soto singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jose R. Garcia. Ivan Brea to 2nd.

Noe Berro out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Rigoberto Almonte to first baseman Hitaniel Arias. Ivan Brea to 3rd. George Soto to 2nd.

Luis Matias strikes out swinging.

Marbin Beltre strikes out swinging.

DSL Brewers Bottom 8th

Yonki Hernandez walks.

With Allixon Cequea batting, wild pitch by Wander Marte, Yonki Hernandez to 2nd.

Pitcher Change: Brandol Perez replaces Wander Marte.

Allixon Cequea pops out to catcher Ivan Brea.

Jose Pena pops out to second baseman Luis Matias.

Hitaniel Arias strikes out swinging.

Final: Lakeland (Detroit) 3, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Boxscore

So remember last week when I said Cody Scarpetta made progress in that outing? I've been waiting for a line like this from him all year. He went 7IP, 5H, 3R, 0ER, 2BB, and 10Ks! That's what I'm talking about young man. Mike Ramlow and Ruben Flores each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. No Manatee had more than 1 hit, Erik Komatsu and Angel Salome (DH) each doubled for BC.

Brevard County Recap

A very drab recap as one would guess with Scarpetta pitching dominantly and the offense not doing much. This game turned on a Passed Ball, but in close games it's always a little thing that does you in.

Lakeland Top 3rd

  • Christopher White lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Gustavo Nunez lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Brandon Douglas doubles (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Scott Krieger.
  • Brent Wyatt strikes out swinging. Passed ball by catcher Anderson De La Rosa. Brent Wyatt to 1st.
  • Billy Nowlin homers (7) on a line drive to right field. Brandon Douglas scores. Brent Wyatt scores.
  • Jordan Lennerton strikes out swinging.

Final, Game Two: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Mariners 3, completed early, 5.5 innings (scheduled for seven)

No word regarding the early ending -- either it was raining or everyone was just tired...

DSL Brewers Game Two Box Score

20-year-old RHP Jose Cepeda made his first start after six relief stints -- in 22.1 innings this season, he has allowed only ten hits (and ten walks), pretty impressive, even if five of those walks came in today's five-inning appearance; DH Ronny Puello homered, the 4th for the team in 21 games; SS Andres Martinez had two hits, one a double; remember how we mentioned in the Game One post how Jose Garcia had walked only three times? Well, he's been hit by a pitch eleven times already...

DSL Brewers Game Two Game Log

Brewer defense led to two outs on the basepaths in the Mariner 2nd -- don't make the first out at third base, kid --

DSL Mariners Top 2nd

  • Rudy van Heydoorn doubles (7) on a fly ball to left fielder Jose R. Garcia. Rudy van Heydoorn out at 3rd, left fielder Jose R. Garcia to third baseman Allixon Cequea.
  • Axel Wel walks.
  • With Randy Perez batting, Axel Wel caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Julio Sotelo to second baseman Yonki Hernandez.
  • Randy Perez grounds out, shortstop Andres Martinez to first baseman Hitaniel Arias

Three runs in the Brewer 3rd on just one single --

DSL Brewers Bottom 2nd

  • Ronny Puello grounds out, shortstop Bertin Sanon to first baseman Jordy Lara.
  • Jose Pena walks.
  • Jose R. Garcia hit by pitch. Jose Pena to 2nd.
  • Julio Sotelo walks. Jose Pena to 3rd. Jose R. Garcia to 2nd.
  • Andres Martinez pops out to shortstop Bertin Sanon.
  • Yonki Hernandez walks. Jose Pena scores. Jose R. Garcia to 3rd. Julio Sotelo to 2nd.
  • Ruben Sanchez singles on a fly ball to center fielder Randy Perez. Jose R. Garcia scores. Julio Sotelo scores. Yonki Hernandez to 3rd. Throwing error by shortstop Bertin Sanon.
  • Allixon Cequea grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Bertin Sanon. Ruben Sanchez out at 2nd.

Final: Huntsville 3, Jacksonville (Florida) 2

Huntsville Boxscore

Amaury Rivas was cruising along (no hitter) until the 7th when he gave up single, homer, single, walk and was pulled. His final line was 6IP, 3H, 2ER, 4BB, and 6K. Robert Hinton was excellent in his 2 innings of relief stranding both of Rivas' inherited runners, he allowed no hits, no walks, and struck out 4, earning the win. Jim Henderson closed it out for his 3rd save of the season. No Stars had more than 1 hit but Brett Lawrie doubled and Caleb Gindl tripled. This will be the last time I mention him because I feel bad since he's been miscast all year, but Zelous Wheeler did commit his 21st error of the season. Taylor Green has been laboring for a while now only hitting .198 over his last 10 games.

Huntsville Recap

The game changing Jacksonville 7th and Huntsville 8th, hooray for the Stars pulling a H-Crew.

Jacksonville Bottom 7th

  • Vinny Rottino singles on a fly ball to left fielder Steffan Wilson.
  • Mark Saccomanno homers (6) on a fly ball to left field. Vinny Rottino scores.

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees started the second half
of the season on the wrong foot with a 3-1 loss to the Lakeland Flying
Tigers at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night.

Despite striking out 11 hitters in seven innings, Cody Scarpetta was
saddled with the loss as he gave up a three-run homer in the third to
Billy Nowlin. Scarpetta's runs were unearned due to Brent Wyatt
reaching first on a passed ball on a dropped third strike by Anderson
De La Rosa
.

Brevard County's lone run came in the fourth when Angel Salome drove in Erik Komatsu with a one-out double to right field.

The Manatees had chances late in the game to tie the game when Josh
Prince
and Scott Krieger led off the eighth with back-to-back singles.
De La Rosa
would then rip one to short, but Gustavo Nunez snagged the
line drive out of the air for the first out.

Matt Cline struck out swinging for the second out and after Lester
Oliveros came in in relief for the Flying Tigers, Sergio Miranda
grounded into a force play to end the inning.

Brevard County kept hope alive in the ninth with a one-out walk
drawn by Angel Salome. Sean Halton then lifted a ball deep to left
field, but got under it just a little too much as it was grabbed at the
warning track. Brock Kjeldgaard popped out to the pitcher to halt the
comeback

The Manatees and Flying Tigers will continue their series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

Hunstville Stars Win Late In Jacksonville

Connor Shreve

The Stars battled through a low scoring affair Thursday to beat the

South Division Jacksonville Suns by one run at the Baseball Grounds in

Jacksonville, FL.

After both squads matched zeros through six,

Huntsville struck first. Steffan Wilson struck out to lead off the

seventh but the third strike wild pitch made for a tough play on

Jacksonville catcher Vinny Rotino. Rotino missed his mark on the throw

to first and allowed Wilson to take second base on the error. Taylor

Green moved Wilson over with a long out to center. With the infield in

it briefly looked as if the Suns would barely escape the trouble when

Dayton Buller grounded out to the right side for the second put out of

the inning. But again luck proved more loyal to the Stars than their

opponent as Suns pitcher Andrew Miller again delivered a wild pitch low

which deflected off Rotino’s gear in to the air and behind him far

enough to entice Wilson to take home for the first run of the game.

Jacksonville

came right back by breaking up Huntsville’s no hitter and taking the

lead in the bottom half. Rotino struck first, in perhaps a show of

redemption, with a single to right field which touched down just in

front of a charging Steffan Wilson. The next batter Mark Saccomanno

turned on a pitch and produced his first hit of the contest, two RBI

home run that may have seemed like a game winner at the time. After a

single and walk followed, Rivas departed without having picked up an

out in the inning, leaving the work to Robert Hinton. Hinton did his

job efficiently, needing only nine pitches to work out of the inning.

The

first two Stars batters were quickly retired in the eighth inning

facing new pitcher Garrett Parcell but still managed a dramatic

comeback. Lorenzo Cain singled and stole his eighteenth base of the

season prior to Caleb Gindl’s RBI triple, his first of 2010. Zelous

Wheeler then continued his almost robotic run production with a game

winning single that brought Gindle in for the third run of the game for

the Stars.

Rivas again dominated minus one inning, the seventh

was the trouble inning for Huntsville’s best starter. He gave up two

singles, a walk and a two run home run in the inning but received a no

decision thanks to the Stars comeback. Both runs Rivas allowed were

earned over six complete innings on just three hits. The Stars starter

struck out six while walking four. Robert Hinton and Jim Henderson did

not allow a single hit in their combined three innings out of the pen.

Hinton picked up the win, his second, and Henderson managed his third

save of the year.

The Stars now own a 5-3 season record over the

Suns with a chance to build upon that on Friday night. Game four of the

current six game series is scheduled to start at 6:05 (CDT) in

Jacksonville.

I've been resisting commenting on these Workplace Safety commericals during the Helena broadcasts. They started pretty tame a couple of years back, but they sure aren't pulling any punches this season, I find them comical. Have to love the people of Montana, I'm not sure commercials like that would fly anywhere else.

Final: Nashville 7, Memphis (Cardinals) 0

Davis Sharp, Sounds Blank Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Left-hander Doug Davis twirled five scoreless frames in his second rehab start for Nashville and combined with a pair of relievers on a six-hit shutout of the Memphis Redbirds in the Sounds' 7-0 victory on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park.

Davis (1-0) was stellar on the hill, retiring 16 of his 19 batters faced over five scoreless innings of work. He allowed two hits (one single, one double) while striking out nine batters against one walk in his 82-pitch effort (52 strikes).

Tim Dillard followed Davis with two scoreless frames before Mike McClendon closed out the contest with two goose eggs of his own.

With their sixth shutout win of the season, the Sounds (40-34) evened the series at 2-2 heading into Friday's finale against their division rivals.

Every member of the Nashville lineup recorded a hit in the contest except Mat Gamel (0-for-4), including two-hit efforts by four players.

The Sounds got out to a quick start against Redbirds right-hander David Kopp, scoring in each of the first three innings to grab a 4-0 lead. Kopp made his career Triple-A debut in the contest.

Brendan Katin (2-for-4) put the visitors on the board with a first-inning RBI single, then Trent Oeltjen (2-for-4) doubled the advantage in the second when he drew a two-out walk and later scampered home on a Kopp wild pitch.

Nashville first baseman Joe Koshansky (2-for-3) made it a 4-0 contest in the third when he belted his first home run in nearly a month, a two-run shot to center off Kopp. The blast, which also scored Katin, was the slugger's seventh of the year.

Katin offered up his second run-scoring single of the night in the fifth to plate Ray Olmedo for a 5-0 Nashville lead.

Nashville wrapped up its scoring with a pair of eighth-inning runs off Memphis reliever Andrew Brown.

Shortstop Luis Cruz (2-for-3) continued to be a run-producing machine for Nashville, driving in his team-leading 43rd run of the year with an RBI single. Koshansky scored on the play after preceding the infielder with a double. Adam Stern followed with a run-scoring single of his own to up the Sounds' lead to 7-0.

Kopp (0-1) took the loss in his first Triple-A outing after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings of action.

Sounds catcher Martin Maldonado singled in the second inning to extend his season-best hitting streak to five games.

The teams wrap up the five-game series with a 7:05 finale on Friday evening. Left-hander Chris Waters (4-4, 3.52) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander P.J. Walters (1-2, 2.43).

Nashville Box Score

Let the roulette wheel pointing to the Brewers' already full 13-man staff spin -- what does Doug Davis' outing mean now for the big league staff? Joe Koshansky reached three times on a home run, double, and walk; Trent Oeltjen's stolen base was his 13th in 15 tries; Brendan Katin also added a walk to his two base hits; Mat Gamel committed his 6th error in his 22nd AAA game this year; Sounds romp despite hitting into four double plays...

Final: Helena 1, Missoula (Arizona) 0

Helena Boxscore

I won't post this until the Helena game story comes through, but I hope Franklin Romero gets his due for that excellent diving catch and double play he started to the end the game. Matt Miller started his pro career in fine fashion. He went 5IP, allowing 5 hits, 1BB, and 4Ks, he wasn't dominant, but he was effective. Tyler Thornburg also had a fine debut, Missoula hitters fouled off a ton of his pitches but he went 2 scoreless with 3Ks. Rob Currie closed out the game pitching the final 2 innings. The real pitching story in the game was Osprey starter Daniel Taylor who went 8IP... allowing only 4 hits, no walks, and he struck out 11. With only 4 hits, no Brewer had multiple hits nor did the H-Crew manage an XBH.

Helena Recap

Helena Pitchers only had 1 clean inning all game, but kept Missoula off the board. Here's the only run of the contest.

Helena Bottom 5th

  • Shea Vucinich hit by pitch.
  • John Dishon called out on strikes.
  • John Bivens grounds out, pitcher Daniel Taylor to first baseman Bobby Stone. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Tony Pechek singles on a ground ball to right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. Shea Vucinich scores.
  • Carlos George grounds out, third baseman Eric Groff to first baseman Bobby Stone.

This was a huge play... the Missoula announcer was shocked

Missoula Top 6th

  • Pitcher Change: Tyler Thornburg replaces Matthew Miller.
  • Adam Eaton walks.
  • Eric Groff singles on a line drive to right fielder Reggie Keen. Adam Eaton to 2nd.
  • With Bobby Stone batting, Tyler Thornburg picks off Adam Eaton at 2nd on throw to Carlos George.
  • Bobby Stone strikes out swinging.
  • Roberto Rodriguez strikes out swinging.

edit. I didn't mean to post this yet, game story coming when posted.

By Brett Billings

The Helena Brewers earned a series sweep over the Missoula Osprey in a
pitchers' duel on Thursday night at Kindrick field. In a game that
lasted just over two hours, the Brewers would only manufacture one run,
but it was all the pitching staff needed. Matt Miller, Tyler Thornburg,
and Robert Currie combined to blank the Osprey as Helena improved to
4-0 on the year.

Miller (1-0,0.00) started on the hill for the Brewers. He
struck out four and walked only one in his first professional start. He
would eventually receive the win.

Helena's lone run came from the bat of Tony Pechek in the
fifth inning. Shea Vucinich led things off by getting breezed by a
fastball from Missoula's Daniel Taylor. John Bivens advanced the runner
by laying down a well-executed bunt. Pecheck then singled in Vucinich
by driving a pitch through the hole at second base.

Thornburg, a third round draft choice from Charleston Southern pitched the next two frames without any trouble.

Currie got the save by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.

The Brewers go on the road tomorrow to face the Great Falls
Voyagers in a weekend series. Action will return to Kindrick Field on
Monday, as the Brewers take on the Billings Mustangs in the first game
of a five-game home stand. First pitch Monday is scheduled for 7:05
with gates opening at 6:00.

Missoula Top 9th
  • Jae Yun Kim grounds out, third baseman Michael Walker to first baseman Cody Hawn.
  • Richie Rowland singles on a fly ball to left fielder John Bivens.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Domingo Soriano replaces Richie Rowland.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Chris Jarrett replaces Raul Navarro.
  • Chris
Jarrett flies into double play, center fielder Franklin Romero to first
baseman Cody Hawn. Domingo Soriano doubled off 1st.
