So I wrote a book

Katuluu

Or at least contributed 10 stories to an anthology called Cover Stories. The basic premise is that each of us chose an album that we loved, then selected 10 songs from that album and wrote stories that were influenced by those songs creating a literary mixed tape. Its something I've been working on for the past year and I'm really quite proud of it.

Now I know you might not be willing or interested in plopping down $17 for a 500 page anthology from writers you may not even like so to hopefully entice you into giving the book a try we put together a free sampler download that contain one story from each author.

Besides that in recent weeks I've devoted two different podcasts to discussing what it was like working on the book, the issues I had with my story titles and then devoting one entire podcast to the origination of the story Rufus' Rooster, which was written just a few days after hearing the news that my grandfather was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.

Episode 1

Episode 2

The book is available on both Amazon and CreateSpace, though we prefer people buy it from CreateSpace since we make more money from them. If you do like the sampler and want to buy the book, just send me a quick message here on Yuku and I'll give you a coupon code so you can get $2 off the cover price.

Sounds like a great concept. I have a question or two though. Are the titles of the stories the same as the name of the song (it does not appear that way). If not, is there a way to find out what song is being referenced by each story...or are there copyright issues that you need to be concerned about (therefore - no direct reference to the song)?

edit: I now see in the first couple pages of the sampler, that there is a reference to some of songs (not all?). I guess I'm too old to be familiar with some of those titles or maybe I just don't listen to enough "non-mainstream" music.

We had to get clearance to use titles and I believe only 6 of us did. The rest of us had to come up with other options. I decided to incorporate the song titles into the short story titles so once someone knows the album I chose its pretty easy to figure out what the song title is.

And for the record I chose Dirt by Alice in Chains. I believe all of us chose albums from the 90's, with varying levels of obscure to mainstream. It isn't much of a coincidence that those of us who chose more mainstream albums ended up being the ones who had the hardest time getting permission to use the song titles.
