Marlins fire Gonzalez

Recommended Posts

The Florida Marlins have fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley, the team said Wednesday.

The team said Edwin Rodriguez had been named interim manager, with Brandon Hyde and John Mallee the interim bench and hitting coaches, respectively.

At the very least, this seems like a horrible move for team chemistry at this juncture, at least from where I sit. What are they, a month removed from the whole Hanley thing, and then Gonzalez gets fired? I'm not implying he got fired for how he handled that, but I would be worried that Hanley would see it in that light some, or at least feel justified in his behavior, and since so many players backed Gonzalez, you have to think he was respected in the clubhouse. I don't see how this move helps them right now.

I'm not that surprised by it. For some reason, Jeffrey Loria couldn't really get behind Gonzalez. He flirted with hiring Bobby Valentine during the offseason, and made clear his postseason goals. First he fires Girardi after the team over-achieved under him and now he fires Gonzalez. For the good job that Florida does with scouting and developing players, I wonder what the deal is with their problem is dealing with managers.

That being said, I'd fire Macha and offer Gonzalez our job before he has a chance to replace Bobby Cox in Atlanta.

Heck, I'd fire Macha and hire Speedy Gonzales!
Hahahahha! Just make sure to hire Speedy, and not his cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez.

Saw on ESPN's ticker that Bobby V withdrew his name from consideration for the Baltimore job, and is expected to be the front-runner at this point for the Florida/Miami job.

Mark A........fire Macha and make a play for Bobby V.....heck, Fredi wouldn't be a bad candidate either!

Just to be clear, this is a Fredi Gonzalez thread, and not a Ken Macha thread.

I was genuinely surprised to hear this news today. Gonzalez never struck me as a particularly boneheaded manager, and most of the players seemed to like him (other than Hanley). Loria's burning through managers like a Steinbrenner.
