Rogers gives up 3 runs in the 1st... what is it about 1st inning runs this year? There are pitchers from Milwaukee down through A ball that have somewhat consistently struggled early in games. Is it just a weird trend, or is it something related to pre game preparation? I would tend to think it's the former, but I'm open to the possibility the Brewers may be trying something new to help extend pitchers farther into games... a different pre game routine so there is more left in the tank when it matters if you will.

If it's just a blip on the radar, I hope it goes away soon.

Final: Jacksonville (Marlins) 3, Huntsville 0

Huntsville Box Score

Had the opportunity to listen to Chad's fine call, unfortunately a frustrating day; the Stars knew they would have their hands full with 8-1 RHP Tom Koehler (well, he's 9-1 now); Mark Rogers only walked two batters all day, but they were among the first four batters he faced in a disastrous initial frame; ninety pitches for Rogers in his 4.2 innings -- in his 14 starts, he's managed to get an out in the 6th inning just one time; we're just not seeing enough effective pitch management in the system, with Kyle Heckathorn in Wisconsin tossing rare shining examples of the seven-inning start we're just not seeing elsewhere -- this was an area where the injured Evan Anundsen always shined; LHP Lucas Luetge followed Rogers nicely, and Nick Green pitched around a Taylor Green error in his inning; the Stars managed eight baserunners, but agonizingly, never had two baserunners on at the same time; Dayton Buller's two-out double in the 5th brought nothing, as did the five singles hit by five others...

Huntsville Game Log

Rogers with a bit of Chris Narveson-syndrome, the fateful first inning is detailed below. Not that it technically mattered, but Brett Lawrie was convinced the baserunner was out on the stolen base, perhaps Rogers would have made the next sequence of pitches differently. On the bases-clearing double, the ball kind of took a bad side-hop and got past Lee Haydel, otherwise perhaps only one, or at most, two runs would have scored.

Jacksonville Bottom 1st

  • Greg Burns walks.
  • Osvaldo Martinez singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Caleb Gindl. Greg Burns to 3rd.
  • Brandon Tripp strikes out swinging.
  • With Lee Mitchell batting, Osvaldo Martinez steals (8) 2nd base.
  • Lee Mitchell walks.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Mark Saccomanno doubles (13) on a line drive to left fielder Lee Haydel. Greg Burns scores. Osvaldo Martinez scores. Lee Mitchell scores.
  • Matt Dominguez flies out to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • John Otness grounds out, shortstop Zelous Wheeler to first baseman Steffan Wilson.

Rogers has now matched the total of innings he threw last year during the regular season and the most innings he's thrown in any year are 98.2, but that was five years ago. I wonder what the Brewers' plan is for him in terms of an inning cap. He looks to be on pace for around 120 innings... is that too many?

I don't think so, adding him to the 40 man a year to soon put him on accelerated path to Milwaukee. If he gets 120ish this season and bumps into the 150-160 range next season (command willing) I think that's the best we can do. There really isn't time to do anything else but shatter the 100 IP barrier and move on.

Rogers also attempted to pitch in the AFL, so they were fine with the workload last year.

And TheCrew, why did they add him a year early? Jack Z would have likely taken him the Rule V draft, kept him as the 25th man (easier when there's a DH in AL), and then sent him to the minors following the year.

I highly doubt that Jack Z would have taken Rogers coming off of 2 shoulder surgeries. It's easier to stash a guy in the AL for sure, I just don't believe that would have been a probable course of action.

I understand why Seth Lintz struggles now. Either he has no control or he's a nibbler, he was 0-2 on the first batter and went 4 straight balls to walk him... the inning didn't get better from there. He's only given up 3 runs so far, but he's reached the inning pitch count and is being pulled, unofficially Steve had him around 40 pitches.

edit. Steve put the pitch count at 36

Why are guys like Marty McLeary and Jeff Bennett on our 3 A Roster. I guess that shows that we have not to many Pitching prospects.
I don't mind Bennett to much but for the Brewers to rather have McLeary starting instead bringing up there closest SP prospects in Rivas and Rogers kinda does. Rogers IMO is a little behind just because of him being limited and his extreme walk total. These are two guys that could stand a chance to fight for a job next season and I think the Brewers need to put them in a position to compete for a spot next season.

Man Helena just never says never! battled back from 6-1 to take the lead in the 7th.

Final, 7 Innings: Memphis (St. Louis) 7, Nashville 1

Redbirds Defeat Sounds In Twinbill Opener, 7-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis right-hander Chuckie Fick turned in a solid start in his Triple-A debut and the Redbirds connected for a pair of three-run homers against Nashville pitching to post a 7-1 victory over the Sounds on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park in the first game of a doubleheader.

Fick (1-0), called up from Double-A Springfield for the outing, held Nashville to one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings to notch his first win at the Triple-A level.

It was a contest filled with missed opportunities for the Sounds, who left seven runners stranded in scoring position over the seven innings.

The Sounds had Fick on the ropes early, loading the bases in the first inning before the young hurler struck out team RBI leader Luis Cruz to escape the jam unscathed.

Nashville got on the board in the top of the second against Fick when Adam Stern (2-for-3) and Martin Maldonado opened the frame with back-to-back doubles (audio available at the link above) to net a 1-0 lead.

Maldonado has hit safely in a season-best four straight contests for Nashville, with extra-base knocks in each of his last three tilts, after enduring a team season-high 24 at-bat hitless stretch throughout early June.

Memphis rallied to grab a 3-1 advantage against Sounds starter Sam Narron in the bottom of the second when second baseman Donovan Solano smacked a three-run homer to left, his second longball of the season.

The Redbirds put the game on ice in the sixth against reliever Jeff Bennett, plating four insurance runs to stretch the lead to 7-1. Veteran infielder Ruben Gotay provided the big hit of the frame, a three-run homer that landed on the grass berm beyond the left field wall. Bennett was ejected by home plate umpire Jason Milsap following Gotay's blast.

Josh Kinney recorded the final four outs for Memphis to notch his third save of the year.

Narron (1-3) took his third loss in three starts for the Sounds after allowing three runs in five innings of work.

Nashville Boxscore

Sam Narron was just okay as noted above, the HR he gave up was the turning point. Jeff Bennett really got beat around in his 2/3 of an inning. David Johnson finished off the pitching effort for the Sounds. Adam Stern was 2-3 with a double, the only other XBH was Martin Maldonado's double. Mat Gamel was 1-4 with a K. The game summary pretty much said it all.

Final, 7 Innings, Game 2: Memphis (St. Louis) 11, Nashville 7

Redbirds Complete Doubleheader Sweep Of Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds completed a sweep of a doubleheader against the Nashville Sounds with an 11-7 victory on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park.

With the pair of losses, Nashville (39-34) fell back out of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related-content-capper.gif
The nightcap featured a barrage of five Memphis home runs against Sounds pitching, the most allowed by the club this season.

It was a back-and-forth battle with several lead changes in the first few innings.

Allen Craig gave the Redbirds an early lead with a two-run, first-inning homer off Nashville starter Marty McLeary.

The Sounds tied it in the second when shortstop Luis Cruz ripped an RBI double, upping his team-leading RBI total to 41 on the year, and Johnny Raburn added a run-scoring groundout.

Memphis surged back in front, 3-2, in the home half of the second on Kevin Howard's fourth home run of the year, a one-out solo shot to right.

Nashville regained the lead in the third with a three-run frame against Memphis starter Lance Lynn. Trent Oeltjen (3-for-4), Norris Hopper, and Ray Olmedo opened the inning with consecutive singles, the third of which by Olmedo tied the contest at 3-3. After a Brendan Katin sacrifice fly pushed the visitors back in front, Joe Koshansky (2-for-3) singled to right to plate Hopper to make it a 5-3 game.

The Redbirds regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third with a five-run outburst against McLeary (1-6), who drew the loss after surrendering eight runs in just three innings of work on the night. The right-hander's ERA rose to 12.14 through 11 PCL games this season.

In the Memphis third, Daniel Descalso (single) and Craig (double) had RBI knocks before catcher Bryan Anderson belted a three-run homer, his eighth roundtripper of the year, to extend the lead to 8-3.

The Redbirds tacked on two more runs in the fourth against Nashville reliever Mitch Stetter using back-to-back, two-out homers off the bats of Tyler Greene and Descalso.

Nashville plated its final runs on a Katin RBI groundout in the fifth and Oeltjen's two-out RBI single in the sixth before Greene tallied the last run of the night with a sixth-inning double for the Redbirds to bring the score to its final 11-7.

Lynn (5-5) squared his record on the year with the nightcap victory for Memphis despite allowing seven runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings of action.

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 matchup on Thursday. Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Doug Davis (0-0, 3.00) will make his second rehab start for the Sounds in the contest. Memphis will counter with right-hander Adam Ottavino (5-3, 3.97).

Nasvhille Boxscore

So remember when I said Jeff Bennett got beat around? I lied... Marty McLeary was tuned up for 8 ER on 7H and 2BB in his 3 innings of work. Is McLeary really better depth than Rivas or Rogers? If not why are we messing around? Unfortunately a solid offensive effort in Game 2 went for naught. The Nashville site summary was once again very thorough, I have nothing more to add as the hitting lines for all of the batters that played a key role were included in the summary. Mat Gamel had a pinch-hit single.

Final: Brevard County 10, Clearwater (Phlly) 5

De La Rosa drives in four as BC tops Clearwater

VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees ended the first half of

the 2010 Florida State League season on a high note with a 10-5

comeback win against the Clearwater Threshers on Wednesday night at

Space Coast Stadium.

After spotting the Threshers a 3-0 lead after 3 ½ innings, the

Manatees broke through in the fourth for four runs. Erik Komatsu led

the inning off with a walk and then after back-to-back singles by Angel

Salome and Sean Halton, Brock Kjeldgaard reached on an error as two

runs scored.

Two batters later, Anderson De La Rosa came through with a two-out two-run single to make it 4-3 in favor of the Manatees.

Brevard County starter Wily Peralta would give up two more runs in

the fifth as Stephen Susdorf's double made it 5-4 Threshers. Peralta's

night would finish after five innings as he allowed five runs (four

earned) on eight hits, while walking three and striking out two.

Corey Frerichs relieved Peralta and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowed three hits and three walks and fanning six.

A one-out RBI single by Komatsu in the bottom of the seventh would tie the game at 5-5 as Matt Cline came around to score.

The Manatees would leave no doubt in the decision as they plated

five in the eighth on six hits. Scott Krieger's one-out ground-rule

double to left field scored one and De La Rosa followed with his second

two-run single of the game to make it 8-5.

Sergio Miranda and Komatsu added two-out RBI singles to close out the scoring on a 10-5 Manatees victory.

The Threshers made it interesting in the ninth by loading the bases

with two outs, but Andre Lamontagne came in and got the final out for

his first save of the season.

Cline, Komatsu, Salome and De La Rosa all had two hits each, while De La Rosa's hits drove in four runs.

Brevard County closes the first half of the season with a 27-42

record. The Manatees will continue their six-game homestand and open up

the second half of the season with a three-game series against the

Lakeland Flying Tigers beginning on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m

Brevard County Boxscore

Well BC wraps up the first half, this team just isn't anywhere near as fun to follow as last year's team was, not a surprise considering what happened at WI last season. Wily Peralta just refuses to dominate batters this season, I had very high hopes coming into the season. His final line 8H, 4ER, 3BB, 2SO, and 1HR in 5IP. Corey Frerichs and Andre Lamontange continued their excellent seasons as noted above. Angel Salome was your DH and the multi hit games were noted in the game summary.

Brevard County Recap

For your viewing pleasure.

Brevard County Bottom 4th

Final: Helena 10, Missoula (Arizona) 6

Helena does it again, comes from five behind to win 10-6

Brewers earn the series win with another dramatic finish
By Brett Billings

The Helena Brewers defeated the Missoula Osprey Wednesday night the only way they've shown how - from behind. The Brewers would come from a five-run deficit for the second time in two nights to beat the Osprey in front of a crowd of 1,401 at Kindrick Field. The Brewers (3-0) have now trailed each game by at least four runs despite the perfect start.

Seth Lintz started on the hill for the Brewers, but the 20 year-old right-hander wasn't able to complete the first inning. Adrian Rosario came in with two outs in the frame, but a lone single drove in an inherited runner to give the Osprey a 4-0 advantage.

Rosario held Missoula (0-3) in check over the next four innings, giving up one run and striking out six. Evan Frederickson, a supplemental first round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, took the hill in sixth inning. The 6'6" 230 lb southpaw from Oak Hill, Virginia was nearly perfect. His only hit was by way of an Osprey homerun in the sixth inning to increase the Osprey lead to 6-1.

Helena decided not to wait until the ninth inning to begin their comeback. Greg Hopkins singled through the hole at shortstop to start the home-halve of the seventh. Connor Lind singled to right-center field after a bunt single from John Dishon. Three consecutive doubles from Carlos George, Reggie Keen, and Franklin Romero would make it a two-run game. Later in the inning, John Dishon singled in two runs to give Helena the lead.

Brian Garman relieved Frederickson in the ninth inning, looking for Helena's third straight victory. He found it after facing four batters, surrendering only a walk and securing the 10-6 victory..

Frederickson received the win. His three innings of work gave the Brewers a chance of a comeback, which was taken advantage of. He left the game after the eighth inning, finishing with six strikeouts to no walks.

Four Brewers had multi-hit games. Reggie Keen, who was making his first professional start, finished the game 3-5 with three RBI. He was also the winning run Monday and Tuesday night after pinch running each game.

Franklin Romero Jr., who led the Arizona League in triples in 2009, also had three hits, one by way of homerun. He's batting a solid .417 over the first three games of the Pioneer League season.

A pleasant surprise of the opening series of the 2010 season has been the play of Carlos George, both at the plate and in the field. He was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Dishon, who was taken in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft from LSU, finished the night with two hits and an RBI.

The Brewers look to sweep Missoula tomorrow night at Kindrick Field. RHP Matt Miller (0-0, 0.00) will start on the mound for Helena. The Missoula Osprey will send RHP Daniel Taylor (0-0,0.00) to the mound in hopes of avoiding the series sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with gates opening at 6:00.

Helena Boxscore

I covered Seth Lintz's first inning up above. Is it wrong that I'm still high on Rosario and Frederickson? When they both throw strikes the are nearly unhittable... the rest of the time they've been pretty frustrating. I'm loving the very thorough site summaries tonight, they are making my job very easy. For the 3rd straight game Reggie Keen was involved in moving the winning run across the plate and he was Steve Wendt's player of the of the game.

Final: Arizona Brewers 15, Arizona Reds 12

Arizona Box Score

Only five of the 18 portions of innings were scoreless; if you're a game log afficianado, this one's for you; this was the first Arizona matchup against the Reds, new to the league from Florida this year; game time temp was 105, but with a 9 MPH wind blowing straight out to CF -- hey, it's a dry heat...

Unfortunately, the first game mention should be the two-inning relief effort of 2009 1st rounder Eric Arnett, which was not pretty; in two innings, Arnett was tagged for six runs on five singles and a double -- Arnett hit two batters, walked one, and threw a wild pitch, my oh my...

29th round pick, Elon University RHP Dan Britt got the starting nod and had a successful pro debut (one run in three innings). Nice job pitching around a one-out triple in the 3rd; after Arnett was roughed up, former Marlin farmhand Skyler Crawford made his Brewer debut and got the win despite allowing two runs in his one inning of work; 30th round Youngstown State RHP Eric Marzec followed in his pro debut and also stumbled, as RHP Jose Sanchez followed for the save, including a successful strand of a Marzec baserunner. So kudos to Britt and Sanchez mound-wise; all 12 runs the Brewers allowed were earned...

The Brewer bats did the big damage in a four-run 6th, but scored multiple runs in five innings for the win; the Crew stole seven bases in eight attempts; all nine starters played the entire game, and all but 1B Demetrius McKelvie (who walked) reached at least twice; smokin' hot catcher Tyler Roberts drove in five on a 3-for-6 day with two doubles and the Reds did not attempt a stolen base; CF Kenny Allison and RF Max Walla each reached three times and scored three runs -- Allison tripled and added a sacrifice bunt; leadoff man and SS Yadiel Rivera reached four times and was 2-for-3 on the basepaths; cleanup man and 3B Justin Parker, who was the Diamondbacks' 6th round pick in 2008, doubled twice; DSL superstar Jhonatan Javier made his stateside debut as the DH and was 2-for-5 with two RBI; LF Derrick Shaw doubled, walked, and had a sacrifice fly; odd, but like the DSL kids in their high-scoring efforts, only one of the 15 Brewer runs scored with two outs...

Enjoy the full log for the seven innings the Brewers scored, but we do need to detail Eric Arnett's day --

Brewers 3-0 to start the season

By AMBER KUEHN, Helena Independent Record

With the Helena Brewers again trailing Missoula by five runs heading into the bottom of the seventh, hitting coach Ned Yost reminded his guys of what had happened just 24 hours earlier. And 24 hours before that.

“Ned said it tonight, he said to the guys ‘Hey, we’ve been in this situation before,’ ” Helena manager Joe Ayrault related. “Keep battling, keep getting quality at-bats.”

Did they ever. The Brewers again turned a five-run deficit into a victory Wednesday night at Kindrick Field, rallying for the third time in as many nights to win 10-6 and start the season undefeated.

“We never really get down, we always play until the last out,” said Reggie Keen, who was 3-for-5 in his first at-bats as a pro, stroking a double and three RBIs. “We always have faith in the next guy to drive in that run or get that clutch hit.”

This time, it was left fielder John Dishon who came up clutch, bringing in the go-ahead run in the seventh on a grounder right up the middle. The Brewers (3-0) had seven hits and six runs in the inning off Osprey starter Kevin Eichhorn, whose sterling start was quickly turned into a loss.

“He mixes in pitches very well and we had a hard time adjusting to it,” Keen said.

“Eichhorn did a heck of a job,” Ayrault added. “He was rolling.”

Helena starter Seth Lintz was roughed up in a short outing, giving up four earned runs on three hits in just 2/3 of an inning before he was pulled with his pitch count already up to 36. Adrian Rosario and Evan Frederickson were solid in relief, and Frederickson earned the win after pitching one-hit ball over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

“I was just trying to keep it close for my team,” said Frederickson, a first-round pick in 2008. “As far as team chemistry, this is one of the best teams I’ve ever played on in my life. It’s fun to play with a team like that ... Everyone believes in each other.”

Missoula did the most damage in a four-run first, leaving the Brewers to dig their way out of a hole once again. This time, Helena’s comeback came two innings earlier than the previous rallies. As the Brewers batted around in the seventh, they got things started with three straight base hits, followed by a fielder’s choice, an RBI-double by Carlos George, a two-run double by Keen and another extra-base hit by Franklin Romero Jr. The Brewers tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth, and closer Brian Garman didn’t allow any damage in the Osprey half of the ninth.

The Osprey (0-3) now have a 19-41 record at Kindrick Field, and will try to avoid the sweep tonight as the four-game homestand concludes.

And while Ayrault would like for the Brewers to come out and take a lead, he won’t be concerned if his team falls behind.

“These guys just battle no matter what the score is,” he said. “And so far, it’s been going our way.”
