Lawrie 2 for 2 with a double and triple so far. I think he's now top five in the Southern League in slugging. Not too shabby for a 20 year old.

Lorenzo with 3 more hits, triple, 4 ribbies.. and Doug Melvin, being interviewed during the brewer game, nonchalantly brings him up and says he's close to deserving a promotion to AAA with about 500 ab's already in AA.

Just Do It!

*Melvin gave a shoutout to Heckathorn too. Nice to hear.

Melvin also stated that Lawrie was playing well defensively, though Doug does have very low expectations for defense.

Fianl: Clearwater (Pilly) 10, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Boxscore

Well not much to like here. Dan Merklinger just couldn't stop the bleeding in the first and then got smacked around in the 2nd. He went 1.1 IP, allowing 8 runs, 3 earned, while walking and striking out 1. Daniel Meadows, a relief favorite of mine, unfortunately continues his recent trend giving up 2 runs over 3.2 innings while striking out 3. Meadows has now been scored upon in his last 4 outings in a row. Trey Watten worked around 2 walks during 3 scoreless and Ruben Flores pitched a scoreless final frame. At least the offense doubled last night's hit performance with 4 hits, Shawn Zarraga had 2 hits including a double.

Final: Huntsville 7, Jacksonville (Florida) 6

Stars Start Second Half Splendidly

By Aaron Morse

Lorenzo Cain drove in four runs, Caleb Gindl drove in three, and the

Huntsville Stars (1-0) survived five errors to start the second half of

the season on the right foot as they beat the Jacksonville Suns (0-1)

by a score of 7-6 Tuesday night.

Huntsville got on the board

right away as Brett Lawrie continued his hot hitting with a double to

right with nobody out in the first. After a Lorenzo Cain single put

runners at the corners, Caleb Gindl hit the ball deep enough to the

outfield that Lawrie was able to score.

But Jacksonville took

advantage of some shaky control from Stars’ starter Michael Bowman in

the bottom half of the frame. With one away, Osvaldo Martinez drew a

walk. Bowman proceeded to hit the next batter with a pitch. However he

managed to get Lee Mitchell to fly to left for the second out of the

inning. Bowman’s control let him down again though; this time on a

throw to first. Mark Saccomanno hit a grounder back to the mound that

Bowman threw wide to first, allowing a run to score to tie the game.

The

Stars gave Bowman some more offense in the top of the second. With one

away the red hot Dayton Buller extended his hitting streak to eight

games with a double to left. After Bowman bunted him to third, Brett

Lawrie drew a walk. That’s when Cain delivered the big blow, a triple

to deep center field Gindl singled him home and the Stars grabbed the

4-1 advantage.

Poor defense allowed the Suns to get one back in

the bottom of the second. With one out Tim Torres singled to left.

Suns’ starter Elih Villanueva attempted to bunt the runner over and

managed to reach when Dayton Buller couldn’t handle the ball. A wild

pitch combined with a throwing error by Buller allowed Torres to cross

the plate to make the score 4-2.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fourth when Vinny Rottino took Bowman deep to cut the Stars’ lead to 4-3.

Cain

and the Stars had the answer in the top of the fifth. With one away,

Lee Haydel singled and Buller drew a walk. Bowman bunted the runners

over at which point Villanueva (6-4) was removed from the game. The

righty went 4.2 innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits while

walking four and striking out one.

New pitcher Kyle Gunderson

immediately walked Brett Lawrie to load the bases. Cain came through

with a two-run single and the Stars extended their lead to 6-3.

Gindl continued his big day with a solo shot in the sixth off Gunderson as the Stars had a seemingly comfortable 7-3 edge.

Bowman

(7-5) tossed five innings, giving up three runs, only one of which was

earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck-out five in the winning

effort.

Reliever Eddie Morlan gave up a one-out double to

Rottino in the sixth. Rottino stole third and scored on a wild pitch to

cut the lead to 7-4.

They made things really interesting in the

seventh. Morlan surrendered a single and walk to start the inning. That

prompted manager Mike Guerrero to call on Donovan Hand to get out of

the inning. He got off to a good start when Lee Mitchell hit into a

double play. Unfortunately, yet another Stars error allowed Saccomanno

to reach second base and a run to score. Matt Dominguez drove him home

and the Stars only had a 7-6 edge.

Jim Henderson tossed a

scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the year as the Stars

survived the Suns’ repeated attempts at a rally. Despite five errors,

Huntsville hung on to win their fifth in a row.

The Stars

attempt to take game two of the series Wednesday afternoon. First pitch

is at 12:05pm and can be heard only on www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Boxscore

*written prior to Aaron's blog post being available* Well my boy Michael Bowman pitched better tonight, going 5 innings, giving up 3 runs, 1 earned, while walking 2 and striking out 5. Eddie Morlan had a tough inning allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strike outs. Donovan Hand also gave up an unearned run in his 2 innings of work, on only 1 hit. Jim Henderson closed out the game for his 2nd save. Brett Lawrie continues to push his OPS up as Homer noted above going 2 for 3 with 2 BBs, a 2B, and a 3B. Lorenzo Cain does not belong in AA ball, Melvin might think he's "close" to a promotion, I think I'm close smacking someone upside the head. Lo was 3-5 with a triple and 4 RBI in this contest. Caleb Gindl added 2 hits including a HR, Lee Haydel notched 2 hits of his own, and Dayton Buller doubled and tripled! Not bad at all for a catcher... Buller has an .833 OPS so far in Huntsville. Ex Brewer farmhand Vinny Rottino homered and doubled against his old club. Thankfully the offense picked up the pitching and defense because the Stars committed 5 errors in the game; Bowman 1 (throwing), Buller 2 (fielding, throwing), Green 2 (both fielding). Must be those horrible MiLB fields giving our boys a beat down...

Manatees thumped by Threshers, 10-1

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA - Eight runs in the first two

innings for the Threshers off of Manatees starter Dan Merklinger led to

a long night for Brevard County in a 10-1 loss to Clearwater on Tuesday

night at Space Coast Stadium.

Clearwater's first hitter of the game reached on an error by Steve

Braun and the wheels came off early for the Manatees as the Threshers

plated five in the first off of four hits and a walk. The big blow was

a two-out two-run double by Keoni De Renne to make it 5-0.

Merklinger didn't fare much better in the second inning as he

allowed three runs on four hits, while recording just one out in the

inning. He went just 1 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, only three

earned, on eight hits.

Daniel Meadows relieved Merklinger and went 3 2/3 innings and his

only blemish was a two-out two-run homer allowed to Anthony Gose in the

fifth inning. Trey Watten and Ruben Flores also combined for four

innings of scoreless relief.

The Manatees managed just four hits on the night and two were off

the bat of Shawn Zarraga including a double. Erik Komatsu drove in Josh

Prince with a two-out single in the third to plate the only run for

Brevard County.

Brevard County and Clearwater will close out the series and the

first half of the season on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast

Stadium.

For those who can't make it out to the game tomorrow night, Stephen

C. Smith of SpaceCoastBaseball.com will be doing a live webcast from

Space Coast Stadium with all the action of Wednesday night's game.

Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Arizona) 8

Helena Boxscore

Ha-Ha no way, the H-Crew scores 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th, the last on a wild pitch to win again. I call this sweet justice for the hell that is the Missoula peanut inning promotion... those of you who have listened to a game in Missoula know exactly what I'm talking about. Unfortunately Hiram Burgos continues his tough season, now down in Helena. He pitched 4 innings, giving up 9 hits, 6 earned runs, while striking out 6. Chad Robinson's first 2 innings were very good, but he struggled in his 3rd, and Alex Jones allowed both of his inherited runners to score. Speaking of Jones, Steve describes him as a right handed Mitch Stetter, he has the same side arm slinging delivery just from the other side. Rob Currie pitched a scoreless 9th to pickup the win. Offensively Cody Hawn was huge hitting 2 bombs in the game. Carlos George came up clutch again, he had 2 doubles including the big 2 bagger in the 9th. Mass Hass probably has a big smile going as Greg Hopkins was 2-4 with a walk and 2 doubles. The H-Crew was very good in the field, they didn't commit an error and George even made a real nice play at SS.

Helena Recap

The 9th inning rally, 6 runs on only 1 hit in the half inning.

Helena Bottom 9th

  • Richie Rowland remains in the game as the designated hitter.
  • Pitcher Change: Justin Albert replaces Victor Acosta.
  • Shea Vucinich walks.
  • John Dishon reaches on fielding error by third baseman Eric Groff. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Brent Dean hit by pitch. Shea Vucinich to 3rd. John Dishon to 2nd.
  • With Carlos George batting, wild pitch by Justin Albert, Shea Vucinich scores. John Dishon to 3rd. Brent Dean to 2nd.
  • Carlos George doubles (2) on a ground ball to right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. John Dishon scores. Brent Dean scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Victor Lara replaces Justin Albert.
  • With John Bivens batting, wild pitch by Victor Lara, Carlos George to 3rd.
  • John Bivens walks.
  • With Franklin Romero batting, wild pitch by Victor Lara, Carlos George scores. John Bivens to 2nd.

Brett Lawrie is awesome and Cain should have been promoted over a month ago Dougie.

Conspiracy Theory Alert.... Cain is being held back because they don't want him to come up and outhit Gomez!

No I don't do sarcastic blue, but even if I did and even though I'm kidding I'm not sure that should be in blue. What logical reason is there for keeping him in AA now that we're into the second half? He plays excellent defense, hit's for high average, takes some walks, can hit for a bit of a power... I guess what I'm getting is that he's clearly not being challenged enough anymore in AA, it's time for the next step.
