Final: Wisconsin 3, Kane County (Oakland) 1

Rattlers end first half with a win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - Cameron

Garfield's two-run double and five pitchers were enough for the Wisconsin

Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Kane County.

The Rattlers beat Kane County 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium in

the first half finale for both teams. Maverick

Lasker was the winning pitcher as he tossed four innings of shutout relief.

Kane County (32-27) grabbed the

lead with a run in the second inning. Myrio

Richard singled to left and drove in Max Stassi for a 1-0 lead.

Stassi walked to start the inning, went to second on a balk, and took

third on a wild pitch to set up the run off Wisconsin starting pitcher Nick

Bucci.

Wisconsin (26-42) had Kentrail

Davis at second and Khris Davis at first with two outs in the top of the fourth

inning. Garfield lined a 1-2 pitch

to the gap in right-center. Kentrail

Davis scored easily. Khris Davis

just beat the tag of Stassi, the Kane County catcher, to give the Rattlers a 2-1

lead.

Cutter Dykstra gave the

Rattlers an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Hunter Morris doubled to start the inning.

One out later, Dykstra singled to send Morris in with the run that made

the score 3-1.

Lasker took over for Bucci to

start the fourth. He would allow

three hits and strike out three to keep the Rattlers in front.

Then, Jeremy Jeffress came on to pitch the eighth.

He worked around a hit batsman and a walk to keep the Rattlers up 3-1.

In the ninth, Andy Sauter got

the first two outs of the inning, but allowed back-to-back singles to bring the

winning run to the plate. Caleb

Thielbar, the fifth Rattler pitcher of the game, got the final out on a grounder

to second base for his second save of the season.

Wisconsin played Kane County

eight times in the first half and went 6-2 against the Cougars.

The Timber Rattlers are off for

the Midwest League All-Star Break until Friday, June 25.

Wisconsin opens the second half of the 2010 schedule at Time Warner Cable

Field against the Burlington Bees at 7:05pm.

WP: Maverick Lasker (5-3)

LP: Justin Marks (2-8)

SAVE: Caleb Thielbar 92)

TIME: 2:39

ATTN: 6,563

Wisconsin Boxscore

Nick Bucci's peripheral numbers just don't give me a warm and fuzzy. Nick had 3 BBs and 0Ks today, giving him 38 BBs against 45 Ks in 61.2 IP on the season. Maverick Lasker pitched 4 strong innings following Bucci's 3. He allowed 3 hits, no walks, while striking out 3, I'd love to get some velocity reports on him now because his scouting report coming out of high school was almost exactly the same as Odorizzi's (Lintz's report also read the same way). I don't see Jeremy Jeffress getting many more appearances with the T-Rats, in fact I hope this was his last. Andy Sauter and Caleb Theilbar's work was detailed above. Kentrail Davis was the only T-Rat with multiple hits, Hunter Morris and Cameron Garfield doubled. Kentrail Davis was also charged with a fielding error.

Wisconsin Recap

Unfortunately this has not been uncommon for the young T-Rats this season... way too many extra bases being given up all the way around.

Kane County Bottom 2nd

  • Max Stassi walks.
  • With Rashun Dixon batting, Max Stassi advances to 2nd on a balk.
  • With Rashun Dixon batting, wild pitch by Nicholas Bucci, Max Stassi to 3rd.
  • Rashun Dixon grounds out, shortstop Michael Marseco to first baseman Hunter Morris.
  • Myrio Richard singles on a ground ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis. Max Stassi scores.
  • With Kent Walton batting, Myrio Richard steals (4) 2nd base.
  • Kent Walton walks.
  • Leonardo
Gil grounds into double play, third baseman Cutter Dykstra to first
baseman Hunter Morris. Myrio Richard out at 3rd.

Final: Huntsville 4, Montgomery (Tampa Bay) 3

Huntsville Boxscore

Don't look now but Huntsville has won 4 in a row! Chris Cody had one of his better outings on the season, 5IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 2K. Mark Willinsky gave up a HR in his inning of work. Lucas Luetge wasn't as sharp today but continued his strong season going 1.2 IP today allowing no runs. Jim Henderson finished the final 1.1 for his first save. Brett Lawrie stayed hot, going 1-3 with 2B pushing his OPS up to .842, keep it going Brett. Zelous Wheeler had a big day going 3-4 with a 2B and Lee Haydel also had 2 hits. Cain(17) and Lawrie(15) had SBs, I only mention it because both players have nice totals nearing the half way point, though last I checked Lawrie's CS% wasn't very good. Wheeler committed his 20th error of the season playing way out of position, hopefully Zelous won't have to play out of position again next year.

Huntsville Recap

A double play hurt the Stars in the 1st, Wheeler's single must have been a rocket.

Huntsville Bottom 1st

  • Brett Lawrie grounds out, third baseman Chris Nowak to first baseman Leslie Anderson.
  • Lorenzo Cain singles on a line drive to center fielder Rashad Eldridge.
  • With Zelous Wheeler batting, Lorenzo Cain steals (17) 2nd base.
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to left fielder Emeel Salem. Lorenzo Cain to 3rd.
  • Steffan
Wilson grounds into double play, third baseman Chris Nowak to second
baseman Cody Cipriano to first baseman Leslie Anderson. Zelous Wheeler
    out at 2nd.

The Huntsville 7th could have been better if not for 2 outs on the bases.

Huntsville Bottom 7th

  • Zelous Wheeler doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Emeel Salem.
  • Steffan Wilson strikes out swinging, catcher Nevin Ashley to first baseman Leslie Anderson.
  • Caleb
Gindl singles on a line drive to right fielder John Matulia. Zelous
Wheeler scores. Caleb Gindl out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder John
Matulia to catcher Nevin Ashley to shortstop Chris De La Cruz.
  • Chuck Caufield walks.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Chuck Caufield out at 2nd, catcher Nevin Ashley to shortstop Chris De La Cruz

Various updates from Adam McCalvy:

Worth noting

Pitching prospect Evan Anundsen, sidelined by a strained right shoulder, underwent an MRI scan at Class A Brevard County last week and the Brewers are expecting results by Tuesday, assistant GM Gord Ash said. ... Reliever Mark DiFelice was scheduled to begin a flat-ground throwing program at the Brewers' training facility in Phoenix on Sunday. DiFelice underwent shoulder surgery in December and is expected to miss the entire 2010 season. ... Both of the Brewers' rookie affiliates begin play Monday, with the advanced Helena Brewers scheduled to host Missoula and the Arizona Brewers to play the Indians' affiliate in Goodyear, Ariz. Keep an eye on the Arizona club for 2009 first-round Draft pick Eric Arnett, a right-hander who was demoted last week from Class A Wisconsin.

Final: Oklahoma (Texas) 5, Nashville 4

Sounds Win Streak Snapped By RedHawks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds had their four-game win streak come to a close with a 5-4 loss to the Oklahoma City RedHawks on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at historic Greer Stadium.

The Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Luis Cruz drew an inning-opening walk from Oklahoma City starter Michael Kirkman and scored later in the frame on Ray Olmedo's sacrifice fly to center.

Oklahoma City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth against left-hander Chris Waters. With one out, the visitors loaded the bases when Chris Davis was hit by a pitch, Ryan Garko walked, and Mitch Moreland singled to shallow right. Chad Tracy then lifted a bloop into center field that should have gone for a hit but Trent Oeltjen deked Moreland on the play, resulting in an RBI forceout at second. Former Sound Hernan Iribarren followed with a go-ahead, two-out single to left.

Nashville evened the contest in the home half of the fourth. Brendan Katin was hit by a Kirkman pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Joe Koshansky's RBI single to right-center to knot the score at 2-2.

RedHawks shortstop Gregorio Petit put the visitors back on top in the fifth with a leadoff homer to left-center off Waters, his third longball of the year. Oklahoma City added a run later in the frame when Davis doubled to extend his longest hit streak of the year to eight games then scored when Ryan Garko followed with a two-bagger of his own, upping the lead to 4-2.

Oklahoma City extended its advantage in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by former Sounds All-Star Nelson Cruz off reliever A.J. Murray.

The Sounds pulled back within a run in the bottom of the sixth. Team RBI leader Luis Cruz upped his total to 36 on the year in the bottom of the sixth when he plated Koshansky with a two-out double off the left field wall (audio). Adam Stern (3-for-3) followed with an infield single to first base, and Chad Tracy misfired towards Kirkman covering the bag, allowing Cruz to score to reduce the deficit to 5-4.

Petit halted the rally with an outstanding play on Ray Olmedo's ground ball up the middle that he back-handed behind the second base bag and flipped to Iribarren to end the inning.

Kirkman (7-1) picked up the win with a quality start for the visitors. The southpaw allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings of work. He walked five batters and struck out six.

A pair of Oklahoma City relievers combined to post three scoreless frames to close out the contest. Pedro Strop registered his seventh save of the year by recording the final four outs.

Waters (4-4) drew the loss for Nashville and is now winless in his last six trips to the hill. The left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings of work.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Monday evening at Greer. Left-hander Chuck Löfgren (6-4, 5.15) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Doug Mathis (2-2, 4.24).

Nashville Boxscore

Chris Waters just didn't have it today, he gave up 8H, 4ER, 1BB, and 1HR against only 2Ks. A.J. Murray gave up his first run since May 30th, but the homer in me would still rather have Mike Jones. Jeff Bennett finished the afternoon on the bump for the Sounds, he was excellent in his 2IP, allowing 1H against 4 Ks. Adam Stern was the only Sound with a multi hit game, Adam with 3-3 with a BB. In addition to being sneaky Trent Oeltjen also doubled, Luis Cruz added a double of his own, and Mat Gamel was 0-5.

Nashville Recap

Gamel flew out with the bases loaded in the 3rd.

Nashville Bottom 3rd

  • Luis Cruz walks.
  • Adam Stern singles on a line drive to left fielder Mitch Moreland. Luis Cruz to 2nd.
  • Patrick Arlis out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Chris Davis to second baseman Hernan Iribarren. Luis Cruz to 3rd. Adam Stern to 2nd.
  • Ray Olmedo out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Esteban German. Luis Cruz scores.
  • Trent Oeltjen walks.
  • Mat Gamel flies out to center fielder Esteban German.

Nashville missed another opportunity in the 5th playing small ball.

Nashville Bottom 5th

  • Adam Stern singles on a line drive to right fielder Nelson Cruz.
  • With Patrick Arlis batting, Adam Stern steals (1) 2nd base.
  • Patrick Arlis walks.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Ray Olmedo out on a sacrifice bunt, catcher Kevin Richardson to second baseman Hernan Iribarren. Adam Stern to 3rd. Patrick Arlis to 2nd.
  • Trent Oeltjen strikes out swinging.
  • Mat Gamel lines out to center fielder Esteban German.

Somehow Gamel ended another rally in the 7th, this just wasn't his day either.

Nashville Bottom 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Zachary Phillips replaces Michael Kirkman.
  • Trent Oeltjen doubles (19) on a fly ball to left fielder Mitch Moreland.
  • Mat Gamel lines into double play, second baseman Hernan Iribarren to shortstop Gregorio Petit. Trent Oeltjen doubled off 2nd.
  • Brendan Katin strikes out swinging.

There's nothing depressing about having farm teams with poor records. The Pirates farm teams have had great records for years. I'll take a bad team with Brett Lawrie on it over a team full of future MLB backups anyday.

Nashville is 6 games over .500 and in fourth place. They are still the best team in terms of record and position since the Brewers are in fourth place in the NL Central with a .420 winning percentage. Heck, even Huntsville has a better percentage than the big league club. Anyway you slice it, it's not too pretty.

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Caleb Gindl's RBI-single to right field scored the go-ahead run for the Stars, giving them a 4-3 victory over the visiting Montgomery Biscuits and spoiling their first half championship hopes along the way.

It took five innings before either team posted a run, with Montgomery (38-30) scoring two in the fifth. John Matulia led off with a double to right and scored on a double by Cody Cipriano. A sac-bunt would advance Cipriano followed by a RBI-single from Emeel Salem to make it 2-0.

The Stars (33-37) fought right back and added two of their own in the bottom of the inning with a double by Brett Lawrie to score Sean McCraw. With Lorenzo Cain at the plate, Lawrie stole third and made it home on a throwing error by catcher Nevin Ashley.

The Biscuits Matt Fields hit a solo home run off of reliever Mark Willinsky to give them the lead. Lee Haydel started the bottom half of the inning with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Capriano. McCraw hit a single to left to score Haydel and tie it up at 3 apiece.

Zelous Wheeler opened the Stars seventh with a double to left field. Gindl brought him home with a single to give the Stars the lead 4-3. Unfortunately for the Biscuits, that was the final score and the end of their first half championship hopes as they lost and the Jacksonville Suns won to be crowned South Division First Half Champions.

Stars starter Chris Cody threw five innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out two. Lucas Luetge (1-0) got the win, pitching 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and two walks. Jim Henderson was credited with his first save of the year, finishing out the game with 1.1 innings.

The Stars finished the first half of the season 33-37 and travel to Jacksonville on Tuesday to open a six-game series against the Suns.

I love baseball reference. http://www.baseball-refer...tion-batting.shtml?redir

Some interesting lines...

Catcher: Nothing (c'mon Javier, Roberts, and Neda)

Infield: Lawrie has 15 steals in 23 tries. That's 65%. Not too shabby. I would expect his acumen on the bases to increase as his career progresses. He is not all that far off the magical 75% number.

Wheeler is sporting a .381 OBP with 35 BB's and 29 K's. He is 23 years old.

Considering it was a wrist injury, I'm pretty pleased with how Taylor Green has been hitting thus far. He will only get stronger as the year goes on.

Josh Prince has one of the worst lines in the system.

Angel Salome can really hit. He has a beautiful line through 17 games. .271/.364/.521 is fantastic.

Shawn Zarraga needs to find a position, because he seems to have some nice hitting chops as well. .388 OBP so far as a 21 year old for Shawn.

Hitaniel Arias is raking through 17 games in the DSL. His line is .293/.423/.483 with a 9:20 BB:K. He is still only 19.

Outfield: Oeltjen is sneaky. His line has steadily improved since I last checked it sometime in May.

Chuckie Caufield is having his best season. He is 26 years old now. Wow.

Lee Haydel has started to take some walks. Still, I'm not sure if it will be enough. I bet the Giants think Lee Haydel is a nice prospect.

Still waiting for that week long hot streak for Caleb Gindl. Still, this is the first true stumble for this kid. Caleb is 21 years old.

Lorenzo Cain is Michael Brantley with major league power. He K's more, but I'll take the power any day. He is sitting at .320/.409/.432 with 12 EXBH and 17 SB's. There is much more power potential in there too.

Erik Komatsu has played at least 9 games at each OF position. He is also posting a superb line considering where his team plays. .396 OBP with 17 SB's. Erik is 22 years old.

Kentrail Davis has his OBP back over .400. Getting hit by 13 pitches helps.

D'Vontrey Richardson has walked 26 times this year. Idk about anyone else, but that is way more then I was expecting for such a raw talent. D'Vo is 21.

Khristopher Davis has a beautiful BA/BA+100/BA+200 line (.292/.389/.483). Good luck at the derby! Khris is 22.

Jose Pena is having a fine season in the DSL for a rookie. His line sits at .250/.370/.417 with an 11:18 BB:K. Jose is 17.

I might do something similar for the pitchers later on.

Completely agree. Every single night I go to Minorleaguebaseball.com box scores, scroll down to the pitchers right away, look at the play by plays to see how our pitchers gave up runs(if they gave up runs), and then maybe give a look to a couple of position players on any given team.

I'm sure I'm finding myself more and more in the minority, but I still love our farm system. We lack a near can't miss pitching prospect(if such a thing exists), but we do have a good 15 that have a great deal of potential in our system to be in the top half of a rotation(understanding we'll be lucky if 2-3 of them pan out) and we have a lot of just good, solid players. Before we had our star players and then not a whole lot behind them, whereas now I see a group of players like Lucroy, Green, Gindl, Cain to go with Lawrie and Gamel whom I do think can be stars. I'd also throw in Kentrail Davis who I think is going to be a very good player and Logan Schafer who will have to work his way back, but is more than capable of living up to his potential of a Steve Finley type player.

We've got a lot more supplemental talent, and supporting talent than I think we previously had, and when you can bring those players up from within, it saves an awful lot of money. The one thing we're lacking is a good young backup SS/Utility type player, but perhaps Cruz will fill that role.

We're not building from scratch this time. We've got a helluva core just between Braun and Parra, but throw in the potential for Manny to develop into a #2/3 potentially(which goes a LONG way in solidifying our future rotation and speeds up our clock to compete). I also think we've got a slew of BP pieces for the future in Braddock, Axford, Coffey(whom I'd like to see kept at a team friendly 3x3 type deal), Stetter, and then any number of pitchers that are currently at the top levels of the system.

There are a lot of reasons to be disappointed about this season, but I for one actually still like the farm system quite a bit. We don't need superstars everywhere, we need a couple of big time impact bats which we have, and then we simply need to surround them with good solid players, something I think our system is very capable of doing at this point in time.
