Link Report for Sat. 6/19 -- 49 Runs Scored in Five Minor League Wins

I have a feeling that even with this 5-5 performance including another homer and double that Baseball America will completely screw him over once again for prospect hot list. Man is he really only 20 and one of the top 5 youngest players in the southern league because he sure as heck isn't showing it right now.

Heckathorn showing once again that it is a complete joke and waste of time for him being in Low class A hopefully Nichols picks up on that soon.

Absolutely awesome offensive day throughout the minors today, very refreshing to to see

Final, Called after 7 Innings: Brevard County 13, Lakeland (Detroit) 5

Brevard County Boxscore

It's too bad that we aren't getting recaps out of BC anymore, hopefully those pick back up at some point, this would have been an excellent game to get some perspective on. R.J. Seidel was the starter here tonight and pitched his worst line of the season so far. He went 3IP giving up 5H, 2ER, and 2BBs while getting 2Ks. Brandon Ritchie continues his surprising struggles but gets the win. Brandon went 2.2IP, giving up 3H, 2ER, 2BB, and 2SOs. Trey Watten pitched the final inning and a third to close it out. What an explosive offensive game this was, all 13 BC runs were earned... everyone in the lineup but my boy Juan Sanchez had multiple hits on the evening. Cline, Miranda, Salome, Kjeldgaard, and De La Rosa (2) all doubled. Brock Kjeldgaard also homered again, as did Eric Komatsu, and Scott Krieger aded 2 bombs of his own. However, BC did leave something to be desired in the field, De La Rosa and Miranda had errors on dropped throws, and Sanchez had a throwing error.

Brevard County Recap

Lots to like in this recap but here's the 7 run 5th.

Final: Huntsville 15, Montgomery (Tampa Bay) 8

Huntsville Boxscore

Josh Butler has one of his better outings of the season but it looks much more like a 2008 line than his 2009 lines... 5.2IP, 3H, 0ER, 5BB, 3Ks. He was greatly aided by 2 double plays in his 5 plus innings. Anyone who reads my usual drivel knows what's coming next, I'm into everything but the 5 BBs. After Butler left, Robert Hinton (3 ER) and Nick Green (4 R, 0 ER) had trouble locking down Montgomery, but a win is a win is a win. As discussed further up in this thread, Brett Lawrie had his best day as professional at the plate even though he was the DH. Brett was 5-6 with a 2B and a HR. Wheeler, Wilson, Green, Caufield, Buller, and Haydel all had multi hit games. Wheeler, Wilson, and Caufield all doubled, and Chuck managed his first 3B of the season as well. Wislon (4) and Green (10) committed errors for the Stars.

Huntsville Recap

Offensively tons to digest if you are up for it. Josh walked the bases loaded in the 2nd but escaped.

  • Coaching visit to mound.

  • Craig Albernaz walks. Matthew Sweeney to 3rd. Cody Cipriano to 2nd.

Was at the T-Rats game, if there were 10,629 in attendance I would guess a couple thousand were dressed in their invisible outfits. It was a nice crowd but fireworks night had alot to do with that. In fact, we left right after the game because I am heading out of town early in the morning and needed to pack, etc. (check BF.net) and we saw people coming into the game then just for the fireworks.

Heckathorn looked good, consistently hitting 91-92 and 94 at least once.

Final: Nashville 4, Oklahoma (Texas) 3

Sounds Win Fourth Game In A Row

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds topped the Oklahoma City

RedHawks, 4-3, on Saturday night at historic Greer Stadium in the

second game of a four-game series.

It was Nashville's (37-31) fourth victory in a row, matching a

season-best at home. Brendan Katin went 2-for-4 with a double and two

RBIs in the victory, while Erick Almonte also added two hits.

The

RedHawks got on the board first in the top of the second inning, as

first baseman Ryan Garko singled to reach base to leadoff the frame.

Mitch Moreland followed with a double, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia

hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to score Garko for the first run.

The Sounds tied the ballgame at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame

as Luis Cruz added to his team-leading RBI total. After Joe Koshansky

led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an Erick

Almonte base hit, Cruz smacked a grounder to centerfield to bring

Koshansky home and knot the contest.

Nashville plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning

off reliever Omar Beltre to take a 4-1 lead. After Mat Gamel singled

home Norris Hopper for the club's first run of the frame, Katin crushed

a line drive two-run double over the left-fielder for the other two

scores. All three runs came with two outs in the inning.

Garko brought the RedHawks back within one run at 4-3 in the

top of the sixth inning, crushing a two-run home run off the light pole

in left-center, his seventh home run of the season.

In his first rehab start, left-handed starter Doug Davis threw 59

pitches over three innings for the Sounds, allowing one run on three

hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Sam Narron (1-2) followed in relief to earn the win for the Sounds,

allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in

3 2/3 innings pitched.

David Johnson followed with 1 1/3 frames of scoreless ball, including

fanning Nelson Cruz to end the jam in the top of the sixth inning.

Brandon Kintzler struck out two over one shutout one frame to earn his

first Triple-A save.

Making his first start since coming off the disabled list,

Brandon McCarthy threw 46 pitches over two innings while giving up one

run on three hits. Beltre (0-5) took the loss after surrendering three

unearned runs in three innings pitched.

The Sounds and RedHawks continue at 2:05 pm CT on Sunday

afternoon with the third game of a four-game series at historic Greer

Stadium. Left-hander Chris Waters (4-3, 3.24) takes the mound for

Nashville against Oklahoma City southpaw Michael Kirkman (6-1, 3.11).

Nashville Boxscore

Doug Davis makes his first rehab start... as this is the minor league forum I"ll keep my opinions on his impending return to the rotation to myself. The pitching happenings were detailed very well in the game summary so there's no need to revisit them down here. Brendan Katin and Erick Almonte each had 2 hits, Brendan also doubled. I would have sworn Katin had a better BA than he does, but I'll definitely take his OBP and SLG. Mat Gamel was 1-3 with 2BB and a strike out.

Nashville Recap

The decisive 4th inning.

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - The Stars offense took off for an 11-run inning en route to a 15-8 demolition of the Montgomery Biscuits Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

The Stars got on the board early in the game with a leadoff double by designated hitter Brett Lawrie. With Zelous Wheeler at the plate, Lawrie stole third. Wheeler drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Biscuits starter Jake McGee. A fielding error put Steffan Wilson on first and brought Lawrie home. Chuckie Caufield hit a double to left field to score Wheeler. Andy Machado grounded out to end the inning.

Lawrie got on base again in the second with a single to center field. A throwing error by McGee sent him to third base. A fielding error, the Biscuits third of the game, scored Lawrie.

The Stars blew it open in the fourth, with a leadoff single by Dayton Buller. Lee Haydel and Lawrie hit back-to-back singles, scoring Buller. Lorenzo Cain got on base by fielder's choice, with the Biscuits catcher getting Haydel out at the plate. Wheeler hit a double to right-center field to score Lawrie and Cain. That would be the end of the night for McGee (2-5), who tossed 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Reliever Heath Rollins was unable to stop the Stars barrage of hits as the first batter he faced, Steffan Wilson, hit a double to left field to score Wheeler. Taylor Green hit a single to get on base. Red-hot Chuckie Caufield hit a triple to score Wilson and Green. Machado drew a walk followed by a RBI-single for Buller, his second at-bat of the inning. A ground out by Lawrie scored Machado and advanced Buller and Haydel. Cain drew a walk to load the bases. Wheeler, who is 0-for-2 with bases loaded, got ball four to score Buller. Rollins was replaced by former Brewer farmhand Dane De La Rosa after just a third of an inning, surrendering seven runs on just five hits.

De La Rosa surrendered a single to Wilson, the first batter he faced, to score Haydel and Cain. Taylor Green struck out to finally end the inning, after 10 hits and 11 runs.

The Biscuits scored on a fielding error in the sixth and added two more in the seventh on a home run by Emeel Salem.

Brett Lawrie hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, his sixth of the year. He was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He currently leads the Southern League in triples with nine.

The Stars defense had a difficult time getting the final out of the game. With reliever Nick Green on the mound, he gave up a single to De La Cruz followed by a wild pitch and a walk. A ground out scored De La Cruz and advanced Salem to third. Two more runs scored on a single by Matt Sweeny, making it 15-7. One final run scored before Green got Albernaz to ground out to end the game.

Stars starter Josh Butler (1-3) threw 5.2 innings, giving up one run (unearned) on three hits. He walked five and struck out three. Relievers Robert Hinton and Green combined for 3.1 innings of relief, allowing seven runs (all three earned runs charged to Hinton) on eight hits. They walked one and struck out three.

The Stars and Biscuits face off again tomorrow for game five of the five-game series. The Stars will send southpaw Chris Cody to the mound. Game time is set for 1:00 PM CST.

Nashville catcher Martin Maldonado's lone hit Saturday night, a 2nd inning bunt single, snapped his 0-for-24 streak. Combined with catcher Patrick Arlis' current 0-for-16 stretch since Maldonado's last hit on June 5th, Sounds catchers snapped an 0-for-40 drought with that bunt single last night. Guess I don't need to mention Angel Salome here -- oops, just did....

Frustrating year for Stars righty helped out with 15-8 rout

John Turner, The Huntsville Times

Josh Butler's first big league camp this spring didn't go anything like he'd hoped. What followed hasn't, either.

But on Saturday, it all came together for the Huntsville starting pitcher and the rest of the Stars. All it took was pitching against some of his former teammates.

Butler did not allow an earned run over his 5 2?3 innings against Montgomery, and Huntsville continued to deny the Biscuits a South Division-clinching win on the back of an 11-run, 10-hit fourth inning that turned into a 15-8 win. Eight consecutive men reached base that inning, and 16 players batted.

By that time, Butler's only worry was a sore backside because he'd been sitting so long.

"The inning took a long time, but you can't complain when you get that many runs," Butler said. "It makes it easy to pitch."

Nothing has gone smoothly for the 6-foot-5, 205-pound pitcher this year. After a banner 2009 where he pitched in every classification - including three games for Milwaukee - Butler (1-3) went to spring training this year expecting to make the Brewers' opening day roster.

Instead, he was shelved for the first two months of the season with elbow inflammation. Since returning from the disabled list and being optioned in late May, the 25-year-old started 0-3 record with a 5.68 ERA for the Stars.

"It was definitely frustrating," Butler said. "Going into spring training with it being my first big league camp and having a new pitching coach, I didn't really get to showcase what I could do for them.

"Today was the first day it felt like the ball was coming out of my hand like it was coming out last year."

Butler - who was traded from Tampa Bay for former Auburn two-sport star Gabe Gross - had his entire repertoire working Saturday, mixing a mid-90s fastball with an overhand curve, filthy slider and change-up.

He also got a handful of help from his teammates.

Brett Lawrie went 5-for-6 with a long homer, three RBIs and four runs scored; Chuckie Caufield went 3-for-4 with three RBIs; and Steffan Wilson was 3-for-6 with four RBIs. Zelous Wheeler, Taylor Green, Dayton Buller and Lee Haydel added two hits apiece. Every Stars starter had a hit except their best hitter, Lorenzo Cain.

"It's an awesome feeling seeing everybody do this," said Caufield, who has seven hits and nine RBIs in the past two games. "We're trying to get some momentum for the second half, and maybe we can make a run at it."

Huntsville will enjoy Butler for as long as it has him, which may not be long if he continues pitching like this.

"I just have had to keep my head high and work my way back," Butler said. "I'm going to do what I can here and just see where they put me."

Brett Lawrie now has an OPS of 839. Fielders OPS in this League at the same age was 837.
