Logan Schafer -- Hernia surgery in addition to the foot fracture

logan82

Wow, things are getting worse and worse for Schafer.

Prospect Schafer to undergo hernia surgery

DENVER -- Brewers outfield prospect Logan Schafer's tough-luck

season keeps getting worse.

Not only does Schafer have a fractured right foot that would have

sidelined him for 6-8 weeks, he will go to Phoenix next week for a

surgical fix of the groin problem that has dogged him since Spring

Training. Schafer is expected to undergo inguinal hernia surgery on

Monday after consulting with the doctor who saw him in Spring Training,

assistant general manager Gord Ash said.

That combination of injuries means Schafer, the Brewers' reigning Minor

League player of the year, is finished for 2010.

"I don't think you can pretend that it's good. A lost year is a lost

year," Ash said. "The best thing we can do is hopefully make up for it

this winter."

The Brewers hope Schafer will heal in time to play in the Arizona Fall

League, and then perhaps compile more at-bats in a winter league.

Last season, Schafer won the Florida State League batting title with a

.313 average for Class A Brevard County, but he never got going in 2010.

Schafer was supposed to participate in big league Spring Training camp,

but he suffered what was described as a groin injury in a minicamp only

days before he was to report to the Major League clubhouse. The ailment

lingered deep into the season, and Schafer playing only his seventh

game for Brevard County on Monday when he exited with the foot injury.

Ash said Schafer actually hurt his foot at extended spring training

around June 8, on a foul ball.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

....and people wonder why I get upset about injury diagnosis and treatment.. I just love it when our guys play hurt and make things worse, this isn't football where playing hurt can work out.

Umm, this makes it sound like he's had the hernia since Spring Training. That can't be right, can it? Why would they allow him to play with a hernia and how could they not figure out it was hernia? It's not that hard to diagnose. I figured out I had a hernia before I even went to the doctor. That's not something you just wait around to fix.

From the JS.

With Schafer expected to miss six to eight weeks with that injury, assistant general manager Gord Ash said the decision was made for Schafer to undergo surgery to repair an inguinal hernia.

I'm sorry, but that is just reckless. They were just going to let him play with a hernia? Are they really that stupid?

They said it's an inguinal hernia. I can't imagine a doctor confusing a sports hernia with an inguinal hernia.

I don't know the difference. It could be the same thing, or something similar. I was just throwing an idea out there.

Depending on the situation you can play through a nernia, how the hell do you play through a broken foot? The pain must have been excruciating with every step...

The only problem is you're advised to get it fixed as soon as possible. If it gets strangulated or incarcerated, then you're going to be out longer than if you would've gotten the surgery right away.

Very true... at any rate Logan must be one mentally tough young man.

From medical literature:

"A sportman's hernia is an injury common to athletes and other physically active people. It is unique because the injury is not identifiable on physical exam or imaging. The specific injury is a tear in the transversalis fascia. A sportman's hernia presents as chronic groin pain that flares with activity and does not hurt during periods of inactivity. Optimal treatment is an open hernia repair using mesh..."

It is not a true hernia (like an inguinal hernia can be) and is still referred to as such because the type of surgical repair is similar. Obviously I have no inside information as to whether or not Logan has this or the traditional inguinal hernia, but since in medicine the two may not be clearly differentiated (outside of the specialists who deal with them) I can assume Melvin and co. may not know the difference and refer to these things interchangeably. This would fit the description and time course better than a true inguinal hernia.

Move up to Canada where I live and you wait 3-6 months just to see a surgeon. Then wait a couple more months before you actually get the surgery. People work and play with lots of injuries. The only way you get operated on in Canada quickly is if it's a life or death situation or you have the money to go to the U.S. Or if you are a professional athlete.

Guys play with minor injuries all the time...almost every player by this time of year has something wrong with them. Jenkins played a month with a broken bone in his back, that's what they do at the top levels. Unless you can make it worse, they play.

  • 2 months later...
just thought I'd bump this because Tom Haudricourt mentioned sports hernia. I understand there may be differences, but in players I've seen with the so called sports hernia, there's often difficulty diagnosing it as the problems appear different than most hernias.
