Huntsville Media Notes

The Stars active roster during their visit to Montgomery in May looked a lot different than it does today. Of the 24 active players on tonight’s roster, only 15 were active during at least one game in the last series. Six players were on the DL in May that are now active (Cain, Green, Haydel, Henderson, McCraw, Wilson). Closer Brandon Kintzler and relievers Mike Jones and Mike McClendon have all been promoted to Nashville along with catchers Patrick Arlis and Martin Maldonado. INF/OF Brent Brewer was placed on the restricted list and INF Chris Errecart was released. INF Juan Sanchez and OF Scott Krieger were reassigned to Brevard County. New additions to the team include catcher Dayton Buller, pitchers Eddie Morlan and Josh Butler, and INF/OF Drew T. Anderson.

June 16, 2010: Game Notes

HE’S A MENACE AGAIN: Chris Dennis snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a two-run single in the sixth inning of game two of a doubleheader against Dayton on June 12. Since that hit, Dennis is 5-for-8 with eight RBI. He has taken over the team lead in the RBI category with 39.

KHRIS DAVIS IN MIDWEST LEAGUE HOME RUN DERBY

Scooter Gennett participating in Skills competition

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers All-Stars Khris Davis and Scooter Gennett are going to be busy on the day before the 2010 Midwest League All-Star Game. Davis will participate in the Home Run Derby at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 21. Gennett will take part in the infield throwing portion of the skills competition.

Davis has eight homers this season and leads the Timber Rattlers in that category. Davis is up against seven other sluggers from around the Midwest League and a high school hitter from the Fort Wayne area. This is the second consecutive year there will be a Timber Rattler participating in the Midwest League Home Run Derby during All-Star festivities. Brett Lawrie finished as the runner-up in Home Run Derby at Clinton in 2009.

Gennett will participate in an infield accuracy throwing competition against three other Midwest League All-Star infielders. The contest is set up with each participant fielding a grounder to the left side of the infield. Then, the infielder will throw the ball at a designated target. A hit on the target is good for one point. A bullseye is good for three points.

Davis and Gennett are in the starting lineup for the Western Division in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 22 at Parkview Field. Timber Rattlers pitchers Nick Bucci and Jake Odorizzi are also on the Western Division squad. Game time for the All-Star Game is 6:05pm CDT.

Final, Game One: DSL Cardinals 4, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Game One Box Score

Apparently this is how you follow-up a 25-run barrage; the Brewers managed two singles and no walks against an 18-year-old Cardinal right-hander who will no doubt torment big league Brewers in five years; Jose Garcia was HBP in both of his plate appearances; 19-year-old RHP Eduard Reyes was coming off seven stellar shutout innings last time out -- but four runs in four innings here (seven hits, four walks); SS Andres Martinez committed his 6th error in 13 games, not an unheard of pace for this league...

DSL Brewers Game One Game Log

Cardinals scored all their runs in the 3rd; Brewers had 1st and 2nd with one out in the 5th, but a GIDP squelched that -- is it true you can squelch a rumor or a rally, but nothing else?

Scoreless through six in Clearwater, it's a real fly ball-fest thus far, a light L-to-R cross wind (and presumably heavy air) making things tough for the bats -- yay, Dan Merklinger...

Kentrail Davis has to crowd the plate. He was hit yesterday by a pitch and just plunked again, he's already been hit 12 times in only 150ish ABs on the season.

I have a quick question how many errors has Gamel made since he came back to playing the field.
Too many, he has 7 errors already.

Jeffress pitched 1IP and allowed no Hits or Runs, and walked 1, and SO 3.

He actually went 2 IP, that will be part of my recap unless Chris steals my thunder.

Final, 10 Innings: Clearwater (Phillies) 2, Brevard County 1

Clearwater Site Story

Hanzawa Sweeps Away Manatees With Walk Off Single

By Adrian Martinez

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Troy Hanzawa's 10th inning single gave the

Clearwater Threshers (33-31) a 2-1 victory over the Brevard County

Manatees (23-39) Wednesday night at Bright House Field.

With the game knotted up at one, Joel Naughton legged out an

infield hit and advanced to second when pitcher Andre Lamontagne (1-1)

mishandled a bunt by D'Arby Myers. Both runners then advanced after a

passed ball, paving the way for Hanzawa who stroked the 2-2 pitch into

centerfield for the win.

It was the second time this season that these two clubs went

into extra innings as the Threshers prevailed 6-5 back on April 29,

which was also at Bright House Field.

Clearwater broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth

as Harold Garcia singled home Anthony Gose. The hit extended Garcia's

hit streak to 20 games, becoming the third Thresher in franchise

history to reach that mark.

The Manatees capitalized on an error the next half inning to

force extras when Darin Ruf could not come up with a grounder hit by

Brock Kjeldgaard.

Jesus Sanchez started the game for the Threshers and gave up

just one hit in five innings. He was followed by Phillippe Aumont who

hurled three scoreless frames. Justin De Fratus (2-0) then came on and

worked the final two innings for the win. All three pitchers allowed

just four hits combined and struck out seven.

Gose was held hitless for the first time in 12 games.

With the sweep, Clearwater will now take on Tampa starting

Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The game will be immediately followed by a

concert by the Grammy Award winning Baha Men. Tickets start at just $5

and admission is free after the game has concluded. It will also be

Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark as all drinks are two-for-one all

night long. Tickets can be ordered online or at 727-467-4457

Brevard County Boxscore

First things first... How did the Baha Men ever win a Grammy for "Who Let the Dogs Out?"... seriously? But hey, if they attract more fans to the FSL its' all good. As Mass noted, The Merk had a very nice outing. He went 7 innings, giving up 3 hits and walks, no earned runs, and 7 strike outs. Another outing like that and his ERA will fall below 4 for the season. Andre Lamontagne gets the loss on more horrible defense, as noted above, the organization needs a WOAH SOLVVD for it's defensive deficiencies. The 2 runs Andre gave up were the first runs he's allowed in A+ since his promotion. Brock Kjeldgaard had the only multi game for the Manatees and there were no XBHs tonight. Angel Salome was 1 for 4 as the DH

Jeffress has been stellar as a relief pitcher for Wisconsin.

Gamel has started raking at 3B for Nashville.

Of course, the problem is the Brewers have no idea what to do with either of them.

We have plenty of relief pitchers (althought I am VERY happy that Jeffress went two innings) and we have a quality 3B in Casey McGehee. It would be a tough situation for Mat if he was moved to 1B to take over for Prince when he is traded. I doubt he could ever fill those shoes.

Final: Wisconsin 7, Clinton (Seattle) 1

Rattlers crack Clinton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin

Timber Rattlers defeated the Clinton LumberKings 7-2 on Wednesday night at

Alliant Energy Field. Jake Odorizzi and three Wisconsin relievers combined

to strikeout 12 LumberKings batters. Cameron Garfield drove in three runs

as the Rattlers knocked Clinton out of the first half Western Division playoff

picture.

The LumberKings (35-30) grabbed

a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Franklin walked to

start the inning. He moved to second on a wild throw to first that was an

attempt to double him off second after a flyball to center. A grounder to

first sent Franklin to third base. Tim Morris drove in Franklin with a

single.

Kentrail Davis tied the game in

the top of the third inning with an RBI single. D'Vontrey Richardson

singled with two outs and none on base. Cutter Dykstra drew a walk.

Davis followed with a single to center. Richardson crossed home plate just

before Dykstra was thrown out at third base.

Clinton had a chance to go in

front in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Cerione tripled with one

out. Wisconsin played their infield in to try to cut down the run at the

plate and it worked. Odorizzi got Steve Baron to send a grounder to

Michael Marseco at short. The throw home was in plenty of time to get

Cerione. Odorizzi struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Marseco used his bat to put the

Rattlers (24-41) in front. Erik Miller started Wisconsin with a double in

the top of the fifth. Kyle Dhanani sacrificed Miller to third.

Marseco dropped a perfect suicide squeeze bunt with Miller charging from third.

The only play for Clinton was to first base and Wisconsin had a 2-1 lead after

Miller crossed home plate.

The Rattlers tacked on another

run in the sixth on an RBI grounder by Garfield.

Odorizzi allowed that first

inning run and that was it. He tossed five innings, gave up four hits, and

struck out five before turning the game over to the Wisconsin bullpen in the

sixth.

Santo Manzanillo tossed a

scoreless sixth inning. Then, Jeremy Jeffress pitched two scoreless and

hitless innings. The radar gun in the ballpark registered one pitch from

the right-hander at 99 mph as he struck out Vinnie Catricala in the eighth

inning. Jeffress struck out five and walked one in his relief stint.

The Rattlers put the game away

in the top of the eighth inning with a four run outburst. Garfield knocked

in a pair with a double. Then, Richardson drove in the final Wisconsin

runs of the night with a two-run single.

Andy Sauter allowed a run in

the bottom of the ninth, but struck out a pair as he recorded the final three

outs in Wisconsin's second straight victory.

The final game of the series is

Thursday night. Del Howell (0-2, 6.68) is the scheduled starting pitcher

for the Timber Rattlers. Erasmo Ramirez (5-2, 2.43) is set to start for

Clinton. Game time at Alliant Energy Field is 7:00pm. You may tune

if for all the action on AM1280, WNAM beginning with the Miller Lite Pregame

Show at 6:40 pm.

WP: Jake Odorizzi (3-1)

LP: (Jimmy Gillheeny (4-5)

TIME: 2:46

Wisconsin Boxscore

As Chris noted above Jake Odorizzi recovered nicely from his 2 previous outings that weren't very Odorizzi like. Nice to see hard throwing Santo Manzanillo put up a scoreless frame, the 6 runs he gave up on June 9th are going to hurt his ERA for a long time. Andrew Sauter has his scoreless streak broken at 3 games, one bad outing is making his season look worse than it has been as well. After working in the mid 90s touching 96 twice during his first inning, the last 4 pitches Jeremy Jeffress threw were 99 MPH FB (noted above), 98 MPH FB (fouled off), 88 MPH Slider (it was so filthy Chris was laughing), and 98 MPH FB for the K. Defensively... well lets just say it was more of the same. The triple right before Marseco gunned the runner at home was another fly ball that D'Vo lost track of, recovered to get a glove on, but didn't catch. D'Vo also had a throwing error, his 10th on the season. Richardson, Kentrail Davis, Khris Davis, and Eric Miller all had 2 hits a piece. Kris Davis, Cameron Garfield, Eric Miller, and Mike Marseco each doubled during the game.

Wisconsin Recap

WI got robbed in the 4th, a line drive deflected by the pitcher to the SS... I was bitter at the time.

Wisconsin Top 4th

  • Khristopher Davis doubles (15) on a line drive to right fielder James Jones.
  • Cameron
Garfield lines into double play, pitcher James Gillheeney to shortstop
Nick Franklin. Khristopher Davis doubled off 2nd.
  • Chris Dennis strikes out swinging.

Jeffress' 2 innings of work.

Clinton Bottom 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Jeremy Jeffress replaces Santo Manzanillo.
  • Matthew Cerione strikes out swinging.
  • Steven Baron walks.
  • Gabriel Noriega strikes out swinging.
  • Nick Franklin strikes out swinging.

Clinton Bottom 8th

  • James Jones grounds out, shortstop Michael Marseco to first baseman Chris Dennis.
  • Vincent Catricala strikes out swinging.
  • Tim Morris strikes out swinging.

Fiinal: Montgomery (Tampa Bay) 9, Huntsville 4

Huntsville Boxscore

Well my boy Michael Bowman continues his uneven campaign, his ERA is rapidly approaching 6. Mark Willinsky continues to struggle, throwing gas onto the fire in the 4th, allowing 2 ER over 3 IP. Casey Baron threw a scoreless inning, Robert Hinton and Jm Henderson were magnificent in their 1 inning stints, each striking out the side. The wining pitcher for Montgomery was LHP Alexander Torres the Rays #9 prospect according to BA, check out his peripherals. He's sort of a pitchability guy, his FB tops out 91 which is above average for a lefty but it's got plenty of run. Taylor Green homered and was 2-3, Anderson Machado was also 2-3 but with a double. Dayton Buller added a 2B of his own, but with the pitching effort it wasn't close to enough. Caleb Gindl left with an injury in the 4th (this season is quickly becoming infuriating).

Huntsville Recap

Bowman and Willinsky combine for a putrid top of the 4th Inning. Gindl gets hurt playing defense.

Montgomery Top 4th

  • Cody Cipriano walks.
  • With Drew M. Anderson batting, Cody Cipriano steals (4) 2nd base.
  • Drew M. Anderson singles on a line drive to center fielder Lorenzo Cain. Cody Cipriano scores.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • With Emeel Salem batting, Drew M. Anderson steals (4) 2nd base.
  • Emeel Salem walks.
  • Rashad Eldridge singles on a ground ball to left fielder Lee Haydel. Drew M. Anderson scores. Emeel Salem to 2nd.
  • Nevin Ashley doubles (8) on a fly ball to left fielder Lee Haydel. Emeel Salem scores. Rashad Eldridge scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Mark Willinsky replaces Michael Bowman.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Chris Nowak walks.
  • Leslie Anderson flies out to center fielder Lorenzo Cain. Nevin Ashley to 3rd.

im not impressed that JJ can strike out people in low a ball...he's healthy...send him back to huntsville...

He was pitching up in the zone quite a bit, which he can get away with because he throws so hard, but I agree that he's doing exactly what he should. Other than the fact that he's healthy there's nothing really to get excited about until he has success at AA.

Wright Tosses One-Hit Shutout For Sounds

Gamel Homers, Drives In Four As Nashville Routs Division-Rival Redbirds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Left-hander Chase Wright tossed a complete-game,

one-hit shutout to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 9-0 rout of the

division-leading Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday evening at historic

Greer Stadium.

Wright (5-3) allowed only Jon Jay's game-opening single in his

third career shutout and first since 2007. He walked four batters and

struck out four in his 111-pitch effort.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related-content-capper.gif

The

complete-game shutout was the first by a Nashville hurler in four

seasons, dating back to an Adam Pettyjohn seven-hit gem on July 30,

2007.

Third baseman Mat Gamel homered and drove in four runs as part

of a 2-for-4 night to lead the Nashville offensive effort. The prospect

continues to swing a hot bat, hitting .350 (28-for-80) over his last 21

contests.

The win was the fifth shutout of the year for Nashville

(35-31), which pulled back within a game of the division lead with its

second straight victory.

Gamel propelled the Sounds to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning

when he lined a two-run homer to right off Memphis starter Evan

MacLane. Trent Oeltjen, who preceded Gamel by drawing a walk, also

scored on the infielder's second homer of the year for Nashville.

Oeltjen smacked his fifth homer of the year in the bottom of

the sixth, an opposite-field shot to left-center off MacLane, to up the

Nashville advantage to 3-0.

Nashville pushed across six more runs in the seventh to

increase the lead to 9-0, plating the first four scores without a hit

after the bases were loaded against a pair of inaccurate Memphis

hurlers.

With the bags full and one out, MacLane hit catcher Martin

Maldonado with a pitch to force home Brendan Katin, who had doubled to

open the frame. The Memphis lefty then walked Wright on five pitches to

bring Erick Almonte plateward.

Rich Hill took over on the Memphis hill and fared no better,

walking Norris Hopper and Oeltjen consecutively to force in two more

runs as the patient Sounds kept their bats on their shoulders.

Gamel followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it a 9-0 contest and up his RBI total to four on the night.

Memphis outfielder Mark Shorey took the hill to pitch the eighth

inning for the visitors and worked around three walks to toss a

scoreless frame.

MacLane (4-4) took the loss for the Redbirds after allowing eight runs in his 6 1/3 innings.

The teams wrap up the series with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader on

Thursday night, when it will be Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium.

Right-hander Mike Jones (0-0, 0.71) will take the hill for the

Sounds in the opening contest to face Memphis right-hander Lance Lynn

(4-4, 4.13). Neither team has announced its starter for the second

contest of the twinbill.

Nashville Boxscore

Wow Chase Wright... not sure what else to say, just an outstanding performance. Mat Gamel's night and the rest of the offensive contributions are detailed above, just keep hitting Mat. Did you know that even after an 0-3 night tonight (with a BB) Chase Wright is batting .375 on the season?

Nashville Recap
