I've listened to quite a few minor league games over the years (capt obvious I know), I don't recall any infielder struggling with pop ups the way Dykstra has the last couple of weeks. There have been some issues outside of his control like wind and weather, but catch the ball young man.

Lasker has pitched pretty well so far, I wonder if he comes out for the 7th? I'm pretty high on him.

I wonder if there is some continuing issue here. I've seen outfielders struggle before on fly balls, but never in quite the same way as he did in the games I saw last year.

Final: Clearwater (Phillies) 8, Brevard County 4

Offense Returns As Threshers Roll Manatees

By Adrian Martinez, Clearwater Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A big night at the plate fueled an 8-4 victory for the Clearwater Threshers over the Brevard County Manatees at Bright House Field. The eight runs were the most scored by Clearwater since May 28 as the team finished with nine hits.

Harold Garcia led the charge with a two-for-four night that included three RBI. The second baseman extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a fourth inning bunt single. Then in the seventh with the Threshers up 5-2, he stroked a three-run double to right but was thrown out trying to reach third.

The runs were plenty for starter Trevor May (4-5) who earned his fourth win of the year with a seven-strikeout performance. May worked five and a third innings and surrendered just one run on two hits. He was followed by Jon Velasquez, Edgar Garcia, and Korey Noles to finish the win.

Clearwater got on the board in the first inning when Derrick Mitchell singled home Anthony Gose. Gose reached on a single to extend his hit streak to 12 games.

The Threshers got a run in the fifth on Joel Naughton's sacrifice fly and two more runs in the sixth when Darin Ruf clubbed his third home run of the year.

Phillies' shortstop Jimmy Rollins made the start for Clearwater as part of a Major League rehab assignment and went hitless in three plate appearances.

Clearwater will go for the sweep Wednesday night at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central) as Jesus Sanchez (5-4) takes on Dan Merklinger (3-1).

Brevard County Box Score

RHP Michael Fiers worked five strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned; despite out-hitting the Threshers 10-9, the Manatees never led, coming only as close as 2-1 heading to the bottom of the 6th when LHP Daniel Meadows issued a two-out walk followed by a home run; fellow southpaw Brandon Ritchie, who has had a miserable go of it in 2010 (8.02 ERA, 51 hits in 33.2 IP, 2.32 WHIP, only 14 K's), blew up again in a four-run Clearwater 7th which broke the game open -- Ritchie was fantastic in Wisconsin last year, just a complete 180 for the worst; Scott Krieger was 0-for-4 as your DH with three K's as Angel Salome sat again -- what a bizarre saga Angel's situation has become; Erik Komatsu, now playing CF, reached base four times on a single and three walks and sports a .392 OBP; Sergio Miranda doubled twice; Brevard lost the stolen base game -- Clearwater was 5-for-6, the 'Tees 1-for-3...

Final: Wisconsin 8, Clinton (Mariners) 1

Hey, a win to discuss!

Lasker & the Rattlers play spoilerBy Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - Maverick Lasker tossed seven strong innings and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers hitters put together an 11-hit attack to defeat the Clinton LumberKings Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field. Wisconsin's 8-1 victory put a serious dent into Clinton's playoff hopes and let the Rattlers start their final road trip of the first half on a good note.

Clinton (35-29) drew first blood. Henry Contreras grounded out to second to drive in a run from third in the bottom of the second. But, that was it for their offense. The LumberKings entered play on Tuesday trailing Quad Cities by three games for the Western Division Wild Card spot with six games to play. Quad Cities won 6-1 against Beloit on Tuesday night and took a four game lead with five to play.

LumberKings starter Taylor Stanton cruised through the first four innings as he retired the first 12 batters he faced. But the Wisconsin bats found the range in the fifth inning. Khris Davis, Cameron Garfield, and Cutter Dykstra had consecutive singles to load the bases. Chris Dennis followed with an RBI single to tie the game.

An errant throw on an attempted double play in the top of the sixth inning allowed D'Vontrey Richardson to score from second to put the Rattlers (23-41) in front. Later in the inning, Garfield drove in a run with a two-out double. Dykstra was the next batter and he singled to drive in Garfield.

The Rattlers tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning. Dykstra's third hit of the game was an RBI single. Dennis got into the act again in the inning with a two-run double for a 7-1 Wisconsin lead.

Lasker settled down after the second inning. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out six without walking a batter, and matched a professional high for innings pitched in a game with seven. It was enough to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Caleb Thielbar and newcomer Matt Costello each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to nail down the Wisconsin victory.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Jake Odorizzi (2-1, 4.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton is countering with Jimmy Gillheeney (4-4, 2.82). Game time is 7:00 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Maverick Lasker has had a very solid age 20 season for the Rattlers, and the training wheels are officially off with this effort -- the early-season tandems now have Lasker at 52 innings for the season (3.46 ERA), so he should be able to ramp up for the 2nd half; Kentrail Davis singled and (what else) was HBP in his Wisconsin debut; Scooter Gennett's lone hit was his fourth home run -- now an .868 OPS for the just-turned 19-year-old, 5'9" 164 lb. second baseman -- is he really going to muscle out 8-10 blasts on the season?; Three singles for Cutter Dykstra; D'Vontrey Richardson reached base three times, Khris Davis, Cameron Garfield and Chris Dennis all with big contributions, as noted above; honestly, this lineup, and the majority of this pitching staff, is poised for some second-half success -- they just have to be...

Final, Game One: Memphis (Cardinals) 2, Nashville 1, nine innings (scheduled for seven)

Redbirds Clip Sounds In Twinbill Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ruben Gotay smacked an opposite-field solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Memphis Redbirds to a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader.

Gotay's blast to left-center, which came off Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett, was the veteran infielder's seventh roundtripper of the year and sent Nashville (33-31) to its fifth straight defeat.

Josh Kinney retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory and record his second save in two nights for the Redbirds.

Memphis reliever Matt Scherer (3-1) was the beneficiary of Gotay's blast, picking up the win after working one scoreless frame.

Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a two-out throwing error by Redbirds shortstop Tyler Greene.

Adam Stern led off the Sounds' fifth with a single against Memphis starter Brandon Disckson and moved to second on a Ray Olmedo sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Trent Oeltjen put runners on first and second, Brendan Katin hit a routine grounder to short. Greene misfired to second on the play to allow Stern to hustle home with the night's first run.

Memphis rallied to tie the contest a half-inning later when Greene doubled with two outs and scored when Allen Craig followed with an RBI single to left off Sounds starter Chuck Löfgren.

Löfgren turned in his first quality start in over a month for the Sounds, allowing one run on four hits while striking out a season-high six batters over six innings, but took a no-decision for his efforts.

Brian Bruney made his Brewers organization debut with two scoreless innings for Nashville.

Bennett (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds after surrendering the go-ahead homer in his lone frame of action.

The Sounds had a pair of runners gunned down at the plate during the contest. To end the fourth frame, Redbirds centerfielder Jim Rapoport made a strong throw home to nail Mat Gamel as he attempted to score from second on Löfgren's single up the middle. In the sixth, skipper Don Money green-lighted Luis Cruz around third on pinch-hitter Erick Almonte's infield single to short, and the infielder was easily thrown out at the plate by 60 feet by Greene to squelch a scoring opportunity.

Nashville Game One Box Score

Only 60 feet? The Sounds had ten hits and drew four walks yet scored just the one (unearned) run -- what a funk, at least until Game Two, as you'll learn shortly; Chuck Lofgren really needed this effort, zero walks along with the six K's; before this night would end, Sounds catchers extended their hitless games streak to ten; Nashville batters did not make a fly ball out all night -- 11 ground ball outs, 11 K's; Mat Gamel singled twice, joining Trent Oeltjen and Luis Cruz with decent games at the plate, at least in terms of getting on base...

Final, Game Two: Nashville 8, Memphis (Cardinals) 3

Nashville Splits Doubleheader With Memphis On Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds won the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds, 8-3, splitting Tuesday's twinbill at historic Greer Stadium against the PCL Northern Division leader.

Ruben Gotay led off the top of the third inning with a single to center field and advanced to third base on two infield groundouts. Jon Jay then hit a grounder to second. Sounds second baseman Johnny Raburn dove to prevent the ball from leaving the outfield, but couldn't throw in time to first to record the final out as Jay scored the first run.

Nashville scored the next four runs in the next frame to take a 4-1 lead. Starting pitcher Marty McLeary singled to help his own cause, and then advanced to second on a throwing error by Memphis right fielder Joe Mather. Adam Stern singled to move the pitcher to third base, followed by a Trent Oeltjen RBI base knock to tie the game at 1-1.

With the bases loaded later in the inning, Luis Cruz took the Sounds team-lead in RBIs, singling home Katin and Gamel. On the next play, the Sounds went up 4-1 on a Raburn infield groundout.

The Redbirds got two back in the next inning to cut the Sounds lead to 4-3. Allen Craig hit his fourth homer of the year for the first run of the frame. After Joe Mather doubled, Mark Shorey singled him home from second base for the other run.

Stern tripled during the next inning for the Sounds and scored on a double from Oelten, his second RBI of the contest that made it 5-3.

The Sounds scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mat Gamel singled home Stern for the first run, followed by a two-run double down the third base line by Brendan Katin for the other two runs for the 8-3 Nashville advantage.

After being released by the Blue Jays organization and signed by the Brewers yesterday, right-handed starter McLeary (1-5) picked up his first win of the season in his Sounds debut. The 35-year old allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 5 1/3 innings thrown

A.J. Murray pitched 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, as Brandon Kintzler threw a shutout seventh.

The Sounds and Redbirds are scheduled to play at 7:05 PM CT on Wednesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the fourth game of a six-game series. Left-hander Chase Wright (4-3, .26) takes the mound for Nashville against Redbirds left-hander Evan MacLane (4-4, 4.13).

Nashville Game Two Box Score

Did you know that Greer Stadium is historic? Just joshin' with the Sounds' fantastic staff, which always provides detailed game summaries for us; in just the six offensive frames for the Sounds, the top four in the order (Stern, Oeltjen, Gamel, and Katin) reached ten times -- yes, Gamel hitting third, thank you, Don Money; it's not too early to think about the Rule 5 draft and 40-man roster protection -- who would have thought Brandon Kintzler would have worked his way into the discussion for this fall, but he certainly has...

Final: DSL Brewers 24, DSL Athletics 5

DSL Brewer Box Score

24 runs came in three innings, and we'll post those inning logs below -- five runs in the 4th, ten runs in the 5th, nine runs in the 7th; after three innings the Crew trailed 3-0; seven doubles and two triples among the 22 Brewer hits; amazingly, only one of 24 runs was driven in with two out; 18-year-old RHP Jeffrey Saba picked up the win with a 5.2 inning start, allowing five runs, three earned, and two of his runs scored after he departed; four Brewers had three-hit games, three others two-hit games; talk about outfield production! Prized RF Jose Pena gets the MVP, he was 3-for-4 (a HR shy of the cycle), walked twice, and drove in five; 18-year-old LH-hitting CF Ruben Sanchez doubled, singled twice, walked twice, and scored four runs; just-turned 18-year-old LF Erickson Salaya doubled, singled twice, and drove in four; there were multiple substitutions in an affair like this, as you can imagine -- normally the game log can hint at an injury or such, but hopefully here it was just a matter of letting everyone join in on the fun...

Don Money tries something new and puts his best hitters at the top spots of the lineup for game 2, and it pays off big time. Who knew? Well, everybody, and for a long, long time. His most important job there right now is to get Mat Gamel ready.
