Vick - Latest: Guilty Plea

The NFL today decided to keep Vick at home indefinitely, which gives them more time to sort things out punishment-wise. Apparently the Falcons were about to announce they were suspending Vick for the first 4 regular season games, but Goodell thought that might prompt the NFLPA to appeal that and bring it to arbitration, so this was a preemptive strike on their part.

The article Point is talking about.

At least the NFL is starting to take steps. Obviously they can't take his pay yet but... here's to hoping that, if these allegations are as much of an open and shut case as it seems, he spends a long time in jail.

Just an interesting tidbit as I watch NFL Network probably too much...there is a commercial that congratulates the Co-Men of the Year in the NFL, Ladainian Tomlinson and Drew Brees...the two players that the Falcons traded to the Chargers for Michael Vick when looking at the draft picks involved. DOH!

Honestly, it'd be a lot bigger of a deal to me if Vick was actually good, and not just a product of marketing. Sure he's a freak athletically, but he's not a good QB. Just cut the clown already. If the Cowboys can cut Quincy Carter for doing some blow, the Falcons can cut Vick for killing dogs for money.

So, Vick did cut a deal, but apparently it will likely include some prison time. There goes his NFL career, most likely.

The thing about him apologizing for this is kind of ridiculous. "Oh, my ongoing for-profit operation of breeding dogs for fighting and executing the losers was all a big mistake and I guess I just didn't realize what I was doing for the last 7 years." It seems pretty phony.

I think we all knew that this was coming, but it still is sad. I guess it goes to the bigger point to not put professional athletes on a pedestal. We all as humans have our vices in one way or another, and when you add money, fame, and pressure to it, the chance for something like this happening increases. Vick threw away an opportunity to impact (potentially) the NFL. It's really a sad day for sports fans.

Also, I think that there should be some serious consequences from Goodell regarding this. I don't know about a lifetime ban from football or an indefinite suspension or what, but it has to be serious. Marty Schottenheimer, in an interview on ESPN this morning said he wouldn't give Vick a second chance because, in his mind, it's equal to murder. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but I'd go pretty close.

who would have thought that Marcus Vick would end up as the good brother? yikes.

i really don't see Vick getting back to the NFL or even Canada, even if he only serves a year in prison, nevermind what Goodall might do to him. if he misses two years of NFL football, including prison time, which would probably be the low end of things, he's not going to get a starting job after all that time off. And then with that many people who would protest and boycott him being on their city's team, that's a PR nightmare and financial loss that in no way equals the value of having Vick as your backup QB.

the only pro football i see Vick playing after all this is maybe some Arena League team somewhere, but maybe not even that.

I guess I don't understand how it's "sad". This was a man who made a conscious decision to stage dogfights, and kill dogs. That's not an illness or something. It'd be different if he had become a drug addict, where you could say "he is ill", but he's just stupid. What's sad is when bad football players with bad character (which was known to be the case) have that stuff glossed over by the NFL in order to sculpt that player into a "face of the league" type of player. Both the NFL and Vick got what was coming to them as far as I am concerned.

Brettac, I meant sad as in it's sad that someone would choose to do the things he did to dogs. I just do not understand it. There is absolutely NO excuse for his behavior. I'm somewhat disappointed that he has been allowed to make a plea agreement and I sure hope that the judge ignores the plea and throws the book at him.

I love how any athlete busted for anything anymore automatically blames it on the people he hangs out with.

You can pretty much paraphrase....

"I realize that I have to be more careful about choosing the people I surround myself with. I fully accept the fact that my own personal decisions in who I hang out with have allowed me to be in this terrible situation, so to the fans of the (NFL, NBA, whatever) I totally apologize (not for killing dogs, or shooting body guards, or doing drugs) but for choosing the wrong people to hang out with."

Pathetic.

Not to excuse Little in any way (I agree he should have been suspended for way longer), but he committed a single awful act (and another DUI which should have resulted in another lengthy suspension) as opposed to organizing a series of awful acts. Vick's actions show a lot more planning and intent than Little's. Little is more along the lines of "scum bag with no regard for anyone but himself" rather than "scumbag who committed a series of malicious and cruel acts".

Plus, our culture as a whole does not punish people as severely when it could be construed as a mental deficit or disease as they would when it was just a horrible thing to do (I'm placing no value statement here - just the way our society seems to work).

Well if Leonard Little can get another chance after killing someone while driving drunk, I think Vick should get a second chance.
Agreed. Don't get me wrong, because I think Vick is despicable, but I'm always amazed that people's emotions seem to run higher in instances of animal abuse/torture than when fellow human beings are killed.

All I will say is that if the league lets Little play (even after getting another DWI), I guess Vick should be allowed to play as well.
