Final, Game One: DSL Athletics 7, DSL Brewers 6

DSL Brewers Game One Box Score

18-year-old RHP Jeffrey Saba couldn't duplicate his sterling June 2nd pro debut, as he was touched for seven hits (all singles though) and five runs, three earned (two of his own errors), in three innings; Saba only walked one and fanned three; fellow 18-year-old's LHP Jose A. Garcia and RHP Jean Capellan followed and walked five of the seven combined batters they faced -- the runs they allowed proved costly as the DSL Crew plated five runs in the 5th and one in the final inning, the 7th, but came up one run short; 1B Hitaniel Arias doubled, singled, and drove in two; RF Jose Pena reached three times and 19-year-old 2B Yonki Hernandez pushed his OBP to .526 with a walk and a HBP -- we can only hope Bob Uecker gets to call Yonki's name at Miller Park some day...

DSL Brewers Game One Game Log

The two middle relievers who struggled as mentioned above had interesting logs -- read how Garcia minimized his damage, and Capellan made his pro debut by facing two batters to lead off an inning, walking each, and then being puled immediately -- one baserunner eventually scored, so he owns the dreaded infinity ERA for now --

DSL Athletics Bottom 5th

  • Pitcher Change: Jean Capellan replaces Jose A. Garcia.

Have the T-Rats won an extra inning game this season? I'm thinking they won one recently that I missed the end of... at any rate, the law of averages is working in their favor, heading to extras again. This record in 1 run game thing has to turn around at some point.

edit. Chris just said they are 0-6 in extra innings, they are 2 outs from going 0-7.

Final, Game Two: DSL Brewers 4, DSL Athletics 1, eight innings (scheduled for seven)

DSL Brewers Game Two Box Score

No game log as of this post time for this game...

After the teams battled for seven scoreless innings, the DSL Crew utilized extra time to plate four runs in the top of the 8th on two walks and two hits -- 3B Allixon Cequea drove in two; Cequea has been in the system for four years now, signing as a 16-year-old in 2006, he turns 20 this week; Cequea (career stats) has already gone through three heat-filled Maryvale seasons, god bless him; bonus baby CF Jose R. Garcia doubled and singled, and just-turned 18-year-old LF Erickson Salaya was 2-for-3 and also sacrificed; 17-year-old catcher Carlos Pena is channeling fellow backstop George Kottaras, as he walked three times here and is now 5-for-12 with six free passes...

Obviously, the pitching was impressive, and it was all 19-year-old RHP Eduard Reyes -- seven shutout innings, three hits, two walks, six K's, nice! The boys did a nice job getting him the win he deserved. No Brewer errors, no wild pitches or passed balls -- yay for fundamentals!

Final: Nashville 6, Omaha (Royals) 4, ten innings

Nashville Site Game Summary

Katin Delivers Sounds Extra-Inning Win

OMAHA, Neb. - Brendan Katin's two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning gave the Nashville Sounds a 6-4 win over the division-rival Omaha Royals on Thursday night at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in the opener of a four-game set.

After Sounds left fielder Trent Oeltjen led off the 10th frame with a line drive single to center, Katin belted his sixth homer of the season over the left field wall. All six of Katin's home runs have been hit on the road while three of his long balls have given Nashville the lead this season.

(You can listen to Stu's call of Katin's blast via the link just above.)

The Sounds (33-26) fourth extra-inning win of the season moved the club to a 14-5 divisional record, the best among the 16 PCL clubs.

Five Sounds players recorded multi-hits, while Mat Gamel and Luis Cruz both added three hits in the victory.

After an Irving Falu single in the opening frame off starter Chuck Lofgren, Omaha left fielder Alex Gordon crushed a two-run home run to right-center for a 2-0 Royals lead, his 10th long ball of the season. Omaha added another run in the next inning for a 3-0 advantage, as Edwin Bellorin knocked in the next run on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Sounds scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to took a quick 4-3 lead. After an Oletjen double and Katin single, Erick Almonte brought home Oeltjen for the first run with a double to center. Gamel then hit his first Triple-A home run of the season for the Sounds over the left field wall, a three-run shot that put Nashville ahead.

The Royals plated one run to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on first and third, Brandon Kintzler came into the contest to relieve Mitch Stetter and gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Scott Thorman that tied the game at 4-4. Kintzler then induced a groundout to get out of the jam and end the inning.

Lofgren picked up the no decision after pitching five innings for the Sounds, surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Tim Dillard fanned three while giving up one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Kintzler (1-0) picked up his first Triple-A victory, throwing 1 1/3 frames in relief. Jeff Bennett earned his first save after throwing a scoreless 10th inning.

Making his second rehab assignment start for the Kansas City Royals as he rebounds from rotator cuff inflammation, Omaha starting pitcher John Parrish threw one inning while striking out one. Philip Humber followed and allowed four runs while scattering nine hits with four strikeouts. Josh Rupe (0-1) took the loss.

The Sounds and Royals are scheduled to play at 7:05 PM on Friday evening at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in the second game of a four-game series. Left-hander Chase Wright (4-2, 3.73) takes the mound for the Sounds against Omaha righty Luis Mendoza (3-4, 3.48).

Nashville Box Score

Fine job by the bullpen (all mentioned above, thank you for thorough game summaries), as Chuck Lofgren only threw 50 of 94 pitches for strikes but managed to get through five innings plus allowing three runs; in four innings, the pen struck out seven and walked none; six players reached at least twice, we'll let you peruse the box score for the pretty, crooked numbers offensively; Mat Gamel a triple shy of the cycle -- I'm now just going to ride him in "Beat the Streak" starting with my choice of him for this game; the Brewers still "own" Brendan Katin through 2011 before he's free -- he just has to pop one up to Bernie's slide some time, right?

Final: Huntsville 5, Carolina (Reds) 3

Cody shines as Stars edge MudcatsBy Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Chris Cody tossed five strong innings and the Huntsville Stars (28-33) prevailed 5-3 over the Carolina Mudcats (25-35) Thursday night.

With one away in the first Lorenzo Cain smacked a double to center off Mudcats’ starter Travis Webb. Caleb Gindl proceeded to wrestle the RBI lead back with a single to center to drive home Cain (audio). After Zelous Wheeler legged out an infield single, Taylor Green doubled in Gindl (audio), putting runners at second and third with only one out. A wild pitch scored Wheeler and the Stars took a 3-0 lead. Steffan Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly (audio). Green crossed the plate and Huntsville had a four-run advantage.

Carolina cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame against Cody. With two down, Sean Henry drew a walk. Mike Costanzo followed with a two-run blast (audio) and just like that it was 4-2.

After the wild first inning both starters settled down quite nicely. Webb and Cody went five innings each, but Cody got the better of his fellow lefty. Cody only surrendered two hits and two runs. He walked three and struck-out three as well. Meanwhile Webb scattered six hits, giving up all four runs in the first. He walked one and struck-out three.

The bullpens took over from there and the Stars were able to add an insurance run in the eighth. Wheeler drew a lead-off walk against Philippe Valiquette. Green grounded out and Wheeler advanced to second. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Wilson ground-out.

The Mudcats made one last charge in the bottom of the ninth against Stars’ reliever Eddie Morlan. With two away Devin Mesoraco doubled to left. Dave Sappelt followed that with a double of his own to make the score 5-3.

But Morlan struck-out Denis Phipps to end the game (audio) and pick up his first save of the year.

Cody (3-6) earned the victory while Webb (2-4) suffered the loss. Jim Henderson worked two scoreless innings and Donovan Hand tossed one as well to pick up holds.

Lawrie tallied three hits at the top of the order and Wilson drove in two runs despite going 0-3.

Carolina managed only four hits in the contest while the Stars pounded out 11 of their own. Huntsville left seven stranded but still came away with the win.

The Stars take on the Mudcats in game two of the five game set Friday night beginning at 6:15 PM central time. Michael Bowman (5-4) will be looking for a team-best sixth win of the year.

Huntsville Box Score

Interesting organizational night for relievers tonight, spectacular in some spots (like here and in AAA), and struggles in other locales; Brett Lawrie somehow escaped the game summary despite a 3-for-5 night with two doubles -- must have been the pickoff / caught stealing, Brett's now only 12-for-20 in that category; Lorenzo Cain on base four times -- keep driving up the trade value, Corey Hart, a replacement is just about ready; catcher Sean McCraw 2-for-4 in his first action in a week; last-place Mudcats have lost six straight...

Huntsville Game Log

Nice way to begin a five-game road series --

Huntsville Top 1st

  • Brett Lawrie grounds out, second baseman Jake Kahaulelio to first baseman Eric Eymann.
  • Lorenzo Cain doubles (4) on a sharp fly ball to center fielder Dave Sappelt.
  • Caleb Gindl singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Dave Sappelt. Lorenzo Cain scores.
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a ground ball to second baseman Jake Kahaulelio. Caleb Gindl to 2nd.
  • Taylor Green doubles (13) on a sharp line drive to center fielder Dave Sappelt. Caleb Gindl scores. Zelous Wheeler to 3rd.
  • With Steffan Wilson batting, wild pitch by Travis Webb, Zelous Wheeler scores. Taylor Green to 3rd.
  • Steffan Wilson out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Dave Sappelt. Taylor Green scores.
  • Lee Haydel pops out to second baseman Jake Kahaulelio.

Final: Bowling Green (Rays) 7, Wisconsin 6, ten innings

BOWLING GREEN SNEAKS BY RATTLERS

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Bowling Green Hot Rods beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-6 in ten innings on Thursday night. The Hot Rods tied the game with a two-out RBI bunt single in the top of the 9th. The winning run scored from second on an infield single in the top of the tenth. The loss kept the Timber Rattlers winless in seven extra inning games this season.

Bowling Green (25-34) scored a run in the first inning. Brett Nommensen grounded into a 6-4-3 double play with runners at the corners and no outs.

Rattlers starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi got into trouble in the third inning. He hit the leadoff batter. A walk and a passed ball put runners on the corners with no outs. Robi Estrada singled in a run. Later in the inning, an RBI grounder by Ryan Wiegand gave the Hot Rods a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin struck back in the bottom of the third inning. D'Vontrey Richardson drew a one-out walk. Cutter Dykstra was next and he drove an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall to make the score 3-2.

A sacrifice fly by Chris Murrill in the top of the fourth inning put the Hot Rods up by two runs.

Bowling Green starting pitcher Aaron Dott pitched five innings and left with that 4-2 lead. He walked three, struck out four, allowed one hit, and was in line for the win. The Green Lake, Wisconsin native would not be involved in the decision.

Sloppy defense and clutch hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Timber Rattlers in front in the bottom of the sixth. Scooter Gennett reached on a single, stole second, and went to third on an error. An error on a grounder to first off the bat of Chris Dennis let Gennett score. Cameron Garfield drew a walk to put the lead run on base. Then, Pete Fatse lined out to short. Estrada thought he had a chance to double off Dennis from second to end the inning. Instead, his throw was wild and into right field to allow both runners to get into scoring position. Erik Miller delivered a two-run double to left and the Rattlers went in front 5-4.

The Hot Rods tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on a run scoring fielder's choice by Wiegand.

Khris Davis untied the game with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning. Davis's eighth homer of the season gave the Rattlers a 6-5 lead.

Del Howell, who entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, carried that one run lead into the ninth. Then, the game turned on the Rattlers. Ty Morrison singled to lead off the frame. He stole second to get into scoring position and give him 22 steals on the season. Howell struck out the next batter, but threw a wild pitch to send Morrison to third. Howell recorded another strikeout, his sixth of the game to set a professional high for a single game, to get Wisconsin to within one out of the win.

Then, Nommensen dropped a bunt up the third base line on the first pitch of his at bat and just beat the throw to first as Morrison scored the tying run.

A similar circumstance led to the winning run in the tenth. Gabe Cohen singled and was sacrificed to second base with reliever Caleb Thielbar on the hill. Thielbar got the second out of the inning on a strikeout. Morrison sent a slow grounder to third. Cohen flashed in front of Dykstra and avoided being hit by the ball. Dykstra's throw to first was not in time to get the speedy Morrison. Cohen never stopped running and would score without a play.

Scott Shuman, who struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, retired the side in order in the bottom of the tenth. Gennett sent a deep drive to right to start the inning, but Morrison made the catch with his back to the wall. Shuman struck out the next two batters to end the game.

The Timber Rattlers begin a three game series with the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. Eric Arnett (0-6, 7.11) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Dragons will counter with Jacob Johnson (2-4, 5.13).

Wisconsin Box Score

Incredible, you just can't make this stuff up, can you? The Rattlers are building up so much karma for dealing with these situations that a huge second half playoff push just has to await these kids. Disappointing night for Jake Odorizzi, continued strides made by Del Howell; Chris Dennis 4-for-his-last-35, down to .240...

While the ASG is this weekend, I don't believe this marks the reset of the first-half / second-half schedule and standings -- we'll drop a note to the 'Tees front office to confirm. as we're looking forward to resetting that divisional race.

The last day of the 1st half is Wed. June 23rd. We hope to be a 2nd half team.

Odorizzi was not very good tonight. Might have been the hour long delay but he couldn't locate at all.

I'm curious how many people watched the game last night and if they saw the same thing I did. I wouldn't say he couldn't locate at all, but he certainly couldn't throw anything other than his fastball. When he tried to throw a curve it looked as though he had no grip on the ball, as if he learned the pitch the day before. He threw maybe 2-3 changeups, 2 of which actually looked pretty decent. In the first couple of innings he actually spotted his fastball quite well, particularly against left-handed hitters. I always appreciate a right-handed pitcher that has the natural sense of placing his fastball on the inside corner to such a hitter, instead of leaving it hanging out over the plate. He overthrew at times, and uncorked a few pitches, but that isn't uncommon for any player at that level. He also let far too many leadoff hitters on, although did a good job pitching around a few jams in the early innings. While he appears to have decent FB velo, he definitely needs his secondary pitches (which I'm assuming have been prior to this start given how effective he's been) to succeed. He didn't look comfortable on the mound, and as homer noted, the hour delay probably didn't help.

I remember seeing Odorizzi pitch in high school and was impressed with his slider. For those that have seen him previously this spring, has he been throwing more curveballs?
