Minor League Transactions

From the Helena game recap, we learn that RHP Alex Jones, the Brewers' 27th-round pick this year, was promoted to Huntsville. I would imagine he's the first player from this year's draft to climb above A-ball, however short his stay might be.

EDIT: MH pointed out that the recap actually says Jones was promoted to "Class AA Wisconsin", so it seems likely that he's actually headed to Wisconsin rather than Huntsville.

When is Lorenzo Cain going to be promoted? It seems like it should have happened weeks ago...

RHP Jeremy Jeffress was transferred from Wisconsin to Brevard County, with RHP Trey Watten going on the DL to make room. I'd guess that RHP Alex Jones, whom we learned was promoted to "AA Wisconsin" a few days ago, will be taking Jeffress' place for the Rattlers.

Not a true transaction, but Brevard infielder Matt Cline and his .395 OBP is fighting a quad injury, hasn't played since the 26th, hoping to avoid the DL.

Sorry, no word on 2nd year pro Chad Stang yet, but if you notice any player who is idle for more than 4-5 days and you haven't seen an update, post a message and we'll see if we have info on him.

Not an official transaction, but we believe that Huntsville third baseman Taylor Green may have left Wednesday's game one of a doubleheader when he was somehow hit in the face by a foul pop up as the 4th inning began. No error was charged on the play, so it must have been a tough, odd circumstance, if indeed that's why he's been out since.

Green's had tough injury luck in the past, including a broken nose via a bad ground ball hop, but thankfully you wouldn't think that this should be a serious setback.

That's not an official report, but thanks to our "fan in the stands" for the update.

There's a small chance it was something else alltogether, we'll see...

In order to make room on Nashville's roster for Lorenzo Cain, the Brewers released OF Trent Oeltjen (stats), .851 OPS.

Oeltjen had an out-clause for July 1st if not in the big leagues -- at this moment, it's unclear whether Oeltjen asked for his release and it was granted or the Brewers saw this as the logical move to ensure Cain's playing time.

Certainly won't be a surprise to see the former Arizona Diamondback Oeltjen, the 27-year-old Aussie, in a big league uniform again at some point.

So much for that Southern League All-Star game for Cain -- don't think he'll mind...

Sounds like Oeltjen did indeed activate his out clause:

The release of Oeltjen, 27, was prompted by him exercising a July 1 "out" clause in the minor-league contract he signed over the winter. Once he exercised that clause, the Brewers either had to call him up or release him within 48 hours.

...

"Our reports were that he was coming on dramatically with the bat," said assistant general manager Gord Ash. "We liked him, obviously. That's why we signed him. But as a defensive outfielder, he wasn't what we were looking for."

...

"We were going to move up Cain anyway. He warranted this promotion. And, as you know, he's part of our future plans."

It was a foul pop up. He was running full speed when he hit the concrete wall which is maybe 4 feet high, from my angle I couldn't tell if the ball hit him or if it was the collision with the wall. He wasn't down long, got up and went straight to the dugout/clubhouse, no blood visable. The oddest part of the play, to me, was he hit the wall just a few feet from the Stars bullpen and I never heard anybody hollering at him about how close he was to the wall, if the ball was out of play, etc.

From Baseball America's transactions report, we learn that 36th-rounder R.J. Johnson, a prep righty from Mississippi, has signed. You can read colbyjack's scouting report on Johnson, who sounds at least modestly promising, here.

We also learn that 3B Wayne Dedrick, OF Juan Barrini, and newly signed LHP Tony Butler were all put on the 7-day DL at Arizona. Dedrick hasn't played yet this year and might still be recovering from knee surgery.

EDIT: Actually, the transactions listed run through 6/27, and Butler pitched on 6/28, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

Yea... a shame he could not stay. Trent was really in a groove and seeing and hitting the ball well this last month plus. I didn't know about the 'out clause' and felt with the way he was playing he'd a get a Sept call-up if that play continued.

30th round RHP Eric Marzec out of Youngstown State has been added to the Helena roster after three appearances with the Arizona Brewers.

Also, LHP Tony Butler is now with Helena. He was with the AZL Brewers but is techinically on Wisconsin's roster and in Helena on a rehab assignment.
