Minor League Transactions

In 7 seasons in AA, Jones averaged 5.7 K's per 9 innings. He was the definition of roster filler. He's only had a job for years based on the size of his signing bonus, as the Crew hoped to get something out of money invested.

I'm neither stunned nor dismayed by this move. Being a 2001 first round pick holds no cache anymore for a 27 year old with 33 innings above AA.

Some team may pick him up as roster filler, but if he wants innings, he's better off contacting some indy league teams.

I really hope he gets to the big leagues one day to make some money.

IIRC, he got over $1M to sign in 2002 and invested it wisely, which is one of the reasons he has hung around this long trying to realize his dream. Many players drop out because of how little money they make in the minors (unless they get a huge signing bonus), especially if they have a family/children to support. From what I understand, money is not an issue to Mike. Kudos to you Mike for investing it wisely, unlike many athletes who get big $$.

Thanks for the effort Mike. Unfortunately the reality is that if he wasn't a former first round pick, the BB:K ratio coupled with average numbers from prior seasons would cause most people to not bat an eye at this move.

At Brevard County, the formality of placing OF Logan Schafer on the DL has been done (gone for the season -- foot fracture / hernia surgery), and the Manatees have activated C Michael Roberts from the DL, where he'll fight for time with Anderson De La Rosa and Shawn Zarraga behind the plate, or elsewhere in the field with, among others, Angel Salome.

Huntsville Media Relations:

LHP Casey Baron has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 19. Baron was recently activated from the DL on June 14, after a 21-day stint. He is 1-0 with a 6.62 ERA in 13 appearances with the Stars. In 17.2 innings, he has given up 13 earned runs and one home run.

There is no corresponding move at this time, leaving the Stars active roster at 23, one below the Southern League limit.

It's been kind of a lost season for Baron, who was tracking to be the next Mitch Stetter-ish home grown loogy for the Crew.

21-year-old LHP Travis Stortz is with the Maryvale club according to MiLB.com.

He pitched for Stetson (SC) Univeristy in 2008 and 2009, it's unclear if he saw action anywhere in 2010.

He pitched almost exclusively in relief with poor results, so this must be an "arm" signing based on an impressive workout.

Listed at 6'2" in college (2008 Stetson bio page), MiLB.com lists him at 6'0", 175. Was a 36th round high school pick of Tampa Bay.

Also at Maryvale is RHP Skyler Crawford, a 22-year-old with two seasons of pro experience in the Marlins chain, reaching as high as the Florida State League last season.

He was a 2008 30th round pick out of California's Hartnell Junior College.

His pro numbers thus far are available for review here.

The Nashville Sounds box score from tonight informs me that Chris Smith accepted his assignment to AAA and Mike McClendon has been activated from the 7-day DL.

Edit: To get down to get Nashville to the 24-man roster limit, it appears that A.J. Murray was either released or he opted out of his contract.

Edit 2: It further appears that Sam Narron was activated in Nashville.

Haudricourt:

The Brewers signed Marshall right-hander Kevin Shackelford (21st round).

The Brewers have signed 29 of their 50 draft picks as well as five undrafted players. Scouting director Bruce Seid, recently back from the Dominican Republic, said talks have begun with first-round pick Dylan Covey, a prep right-hander from Pasadena, Calif.

Wisconsin IF / OF Pete Fatse, just 1-for-his-last-25, certainly has seen his role diminish in recent days. Fatse was just ridiculous throughout April, and saw plenty of time in the Rattler cleanup spot this spring despite his 5'10", 170 lb. frame.

In fact, if you added Fatse's OPS for both May (.575) and June's (.407) combined 134 AB's, it wouldn't come close to equaling the 1.182 OPS he posted in the season's first month.

To fill a spot at Brevard, the 22-year-old (23 in August) Fatse has been bumped up to the Manatees, where we imagine he'll fill in at a number of spots.

Not exactly a reward for recent production, but it makes some sense roster-wise.

Scratch that thought from a couple posts back -- catcher Anderson De La Rosa was needed more in Nashville than Huntsville -- here's why, courtesy of the Sounds' media notes --

MALDONADO TO DISABLED LIST: Catcher Martin Maldonado was placed on the disabled list today after leaving last night’s game in the ninth inning due to a high ankle injury suffered in a home plate collision with Memphis’ Mark Shorey last night. Replacing Maldonado on the

Nashville roster, catcher Anderson De La Rosa was promoted from Advanced -A Brevard County, where he hit .203 (38-for-187) with one home run and 21 RBIs in 53 games for the Manatees. Appearing defensively in 44 games at catcher, he ranked second in the FSL throwing out 38% (23 of 60) basestealers and led all catchers with 50 assists.

Also, may of you are aware of this, but --

DAVIS TRANSFERRED TO WISCONSIN: Left-handed starter Doug Davis has been transferred to Single-A Wisonsin to make his third rehab start on Wednesday. Davis made two rehab starts for Nashville this month, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER / 8.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts.

Wisconsin Press Release:

DOUG DAVIS SCHEDULED TO START FOR TIMBER RATTLERS ON JUNE 30

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that Doug Davis will make a rehabilitation start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The left-hander will start the game on Wednesday, June 30 when the Rattlers host the Quad Cities River Bandits at 12:05 PM.

Davis has not made a major league start since May 10. He has been on the disabled list since doctors diagnosed him with pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart, in mid-May. Davis was 1-4 with a 7.56 ERA in seven starts for the Brewers before going on the DL.

Davis has made a pair of rehabilitation starts for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Brewers. In his last start on June 24, Davis pitched five shutout innings, allowed two hits, struck out nine, and picked up the win against the Memphis Redbirds.

Tickets are available for all 2010 Timber Rattlers home games and may be purchased one of three ways: On-line at www.timberrattlers.com, over the phone at 800-WI-TIMBER, or in person at the Time Warner Cable Field Box Office.

This is how Huntsville gets to a full complement of players, via the Huntsville Media Notes --

OF Drew Anderson was activated from the disabled list Saturday. He was placed on the DL back on June 10. In 12 games with Huntsville this year, Anderson is batting .279 (12-for-43) with one home run and six RBI.

The Fargo-Moorhead (ND) RedHawks have sold the contract of RHP Darren Byrd to the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the independent Northern League club announced. Byrd left the team Saturday and has joined the Brevard County Manatees, the Brewers affiliate in the Florida State League (High-A).

Byrd, 23, was 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA in four starts with Fargo-Moorhead this season. He has pitched 19.2 innings and allowed 14 runs (ten earned) on 20 hits. Byrd struck out 18 batters, walked ten and opponents hit .256 against him.

The 23-year-old Byrd was drafted by the Phillies in the 18th round of the 2005 draft out of a Florida high school. The starter was released after the 2009 season. He'll be very familiar with the Brevard surroundings, as he made 42 appearances (31 starts) for Clearwater in '08 and '09 combined.

Look like Eric Farris' one at-bat with Maryvale may have been a bit of a setback --

Nashville Media Notes --

FARRIS’ SHORT REHAB ASSIGNMENT ENDS: Second baseman Eric Farris, who has been on the Sounds’ disabled list since April 30th due to a knee injury, recently joined the rookie-level Arizona League Brewers for a rehab assignment. However, he was removed from that assignment yesterday after going hitless in his lone plate appearance. Farris remains on the Nashville D.L.

As was mentioned in Monday's Link report, the Brewers have signed local product LHP Tony Butler, as was first mentioned over at BrewCrewball in this post (plus comments), which provides more detail.

Also from Monday's action, a new RHP, Juan Francisco, was added to the DSL roster.

Baseball America confirms some items we were aware of, but were awaiting official word on --

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Cody Adams, C Brett Whiteside, 2B Mike Brownstein

Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Luis Guerrero, LHP Jose Ramos

Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Dionis Hinojosa

Whiteside, Guerrero and Ramos all had arm surgeries, believed to be Tommy John in all three cases; Adams is on his way back from shoulder surgery; don't believe we know of Brownstein's injury status...

Hinojosa will play in the DSL when he makes his pro debut; his Brewerfan index page will be incomplete until we gather some vitals for him...
