Put them all on the market

See what the market is. Maybe they could get something to build for 2012!

Brewers have some pretty good position prospects in the OF, 3B and 2B.

Maybe they could get 2 near MLB top pitching prospects for Gallardo.

Just to get this out of the way - trading Gallardo with that contract is absurd.

I don't know anything about anything, but I would have to think that GMs answer phone calls about every player on their team. I'd say pretty much every team has a guy or two that are truly untouchable, but everyone else is up for grabs for the right price even if it's not made public. It's not like there's some league-wide list of players "on the market". Gallardo and Braun are untouchable at this point, but everyone else is fair game.

Gallardo is a good #2-3 starter on a quality team. Who else but a good pitcher under contract would get back two young, quality pitchers with limited MLB service time?

Gallardo and Braun are eminently tradeable because they are young and under contract. That said, no one should be traded for less than value.

Gallardo is no worse than a #2 starter. And his last couple of starts is pitching like a #1 on any team. Trading him with the club friendly contract they signed him to would be just wrong.

brains and braun I am with you, if Braun or Gallardo would get traded anytime soon, it would be hard to justify supporting this team that I have supported since I was a little kid.

I wouldn't trade Braun and Gallardo in a deal for ANY team's top 5 prospects. Most prospects don't pan out, and to count on them is foolhardy. I'll go even further to say that this team should have been trading prospects for veteran pitching during the past year, but they couldn't do so because of Suppan and all of the other horrible contracts. Now the 'window' for winning has almost closed, but not to the point I deal two of the cornerstones that are under contract for a reasonable rate.

At the rate prospects turn out it isn't realistic to trade either Braun or Yo for prospects. Every player has a price but it isn't realistic to consider trading either of these guys. If we move Prince at some point for just prospects I'd be very upset.

But people are always demanding the Brewer sell high. If you want the Brewers to sell high you should be demanding that Braun and Gallardo be moved.

I don't think you're serious, but just in case you are... I think "selling high" is trading a player when you know there's no way they will sustain that level of on-field success (Hart right now)... and it's unlikely that Braun or Gallardo decline in performance anytime soon. We may not have even seen the best of them yet.

Yep that's exactly what I've been saying... I guess maybe we sit around and hope to get lucky because we've been so unlucky. The Milwaukee Breweers - the most snake bitten franchise in the history of professional sports.

But if the Brewers "know there's no way they will sustain that level of on-field success" don't other teams know it as well? Sure, we might be able to get a little more for someone like Corey Hart than we could 6 months ago, but its not like other GMs can't see his history.

I should've used the word "think" instead of "know"... because there's no way of knowing for sure. Hart is most likely not going to continue to be this good - but I'm sure some GM's think or hope he will and will want him. I used to think we should've sold high on McGehee and now I'm more inclined to keep him because he's showing he wasn't a fluke last year.

Exactly. Selling high isn't trading Peyton Manning when he's 26 years old because his value is at it's highest. He's a cornerstone of your franchise, as our Gallardo and Braun.

Selling high would be trading those players who are not going to be substantial pieces of your future for the next 5+ years, or even less.

Corey Hart, Casey McGehee, Carlos Villanueva, Todd Coffey when he was healthy, Rickie Weeks perhaps earlier in this season(though I'd much prefer to "buy low" on him and sign him to a 4 year ext. at 7 per).

Those types of players. And Prince Fielder, I don't know that high or low makes a world of difference with him as his track record and age make his value high enough. Of course a Justin Morneau season would help, but teams know what a monster he is......

But c'mon, OBVIOUSLY we're not talking about Braun or Yo. Though we could almost certainly bring back an absolute haul.

Joke question, but does Braun net us Mike Stanton+Matt Dominquez+Chad James from the Marlins(He'd fit with his contract).

And Yo+McGehee to Minny for Gibson+Hicks+Revere...

That's a throwaway joke of a question, just curious what you think two superstar players at ages 24 and 26 locked up through 2015 would net us. I'm thinking 5 top 50 prospects and a couple other top 100-ish is about what they'd be worth.

Untouchables:

Ryan Braun

Yovani Gallardo

Casey McGehee

Zach Braddock

John Axford

Difficult to Depart With:

2B Rickie Weeks

Other than that I wouldn't mind seeing others traded, but Yo looks like he's developing into that ace we've been waiting for. If Braun and/or Gallardo are traded I'll become a Nationals fan (STRASBURG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...and Harper).

But I'd like to see these guys traded:

Prince~at least 3 top prospects, maybe a bullpen arm also

Corey~I like a deal where we package him and Prince to TB for Desmond Jennings, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore, Alex Torres, and Tim Beckham

Wolf~If some contending team is interested we should dump his contract and pick up some kids

Hoffman~Maybe he'll just retire, but we wouldn't get much from him anyways

Edmonds~Not getting much in return

Gomez (if TB trade goes through)~sub .300 OBP is crappy!

I'd like to see these trades go down:

TB gets: Prince and Corey

MIL gets: OF Desmond Jennings, SP Jeremy Hellickson, SP Matt Moore, SP Alex Torres

LAA get: Wolf

MIL gets: SP Trevor Reckling

This completely restocks our upper level pitching.

I know that neither of these is probably going to happen, but I'd be estatic.

I'm not sure anyone would want a piece of Wolf with another two years attached and give up a top pitching prospect. Wolf will probably be solid next year, but that third year is really rolling the dice. I'd take the deal though if offered

First of all, I wasn't really being serious with my Yo or Braun ideas....although....given that they were so over the top I'm not sure I'd say no to either trade.

However, I don't see Axford as being the least bit untouchable. It's very nice he's come up and had a nice little run, but he's Turnbow waiting to happen. I have no confidence his newfound control can be sustained. Braddock I love, and I don't know what his value is, but again, relievers with the issues he has are NOT untouchable. They simply have a lot of value.

And Casey McGehee.....Casey is the MOST touchable to me. Offer us a good-GOOD pitching prospect and I'd be glad to move him. In fact, Bill Hall, and Chris Capuano would have likely been on this list a few years ago. And hell, lets take this a step further, so would have Derrick Turnbow.

The only players you label as "untouchable" and even that's never the case as there are always players you would trade, but the only close to that are the young superstars who are controlled for long periods of time. Such as Yo and Braun. Beyond that, give me an upper level flame throwing top prospect? I'll give up anyone on this team and any two players not named Prince.

I don't think I've ever advocated about selling high. Simply because you never know your selling high until after the fact. Hindsight is easy. Reality isn't. Trading McGehee last year would have been a huge mistake. That being said the only players I'd consider selling high on are guys that have demonstrated that they are huge injury risks and have had major injuries in the past. It becomes a fine line for a GM to determine if they are likely to get hurt again in the near future or if that player has maybe started to train better and keep themselves in better health than before lowering the risk of injury and if were past injuries bad luck (got run over on the basepaths for example). In other words I'd have to take serious looks at Parra and Weeks and make some decisions having more facts in front of me than a devoted fan does.

Axe isn't Turnbow waiting to happen. Turnbow had 1 pitch, and had a decent slurve that he couldn't throw near the zone. Axe has 3 pitches (fastball, 12-6 curve, slider) and has solid control of all of them.

So judging by a few of these posts the only players anyone wants to trade are guys who aren't top flight players or guys who aren't all that special.

The most common level of player you get in return for those types of players are guys who just aren't going to be that good either.

The whole idea of trading is to improve a weak area of your team by trading a strong area, you can't expect to trade crap for good players with upside. Give to get is pretty much the mantra. So often I see these posts detailing how the team can't trade McGehee, can't trade Hart, can't trade Weeks, can't trade anyone except the bottom half of the 25 man roster and none of the minor league bats. What kind of return do you expect to get from a Villanueva or a Bush? Not much that will really help the team.

Trading McGehee makes sense (if anyone would give up mush for him) in that if Gamel/Lawrie/Green/Cain are expected to reach the bigs where are they going to play if McGehee, Fielder, Hart, Weeks are all still around?

Gallardo and Braun are the only guys I am seeing consistently being brought up as guys not to trade. I would add Weeks to Braun and Gallardo as guys not to trade if he would sign an extencsion. If Weeks could be extended he would be a very valuable guy since Lawrie isn't likely to stick at 2B. Fielder is pretty widely considered somebody who should be traded, at least lately he is. The big question with McGehee is how much can we really get in return? Doesn't seem like we could get much so it probably doesn't pay to trade him. For the right deal I would trade anybody.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I agree with everything you said Logan. For the right price I would trade anyone but Braun and Gallardo would be the hardest to pry away but even they could be had with an overwhelming offer. Other than that someone decent or with upside probably has to be included in any trade where the expected return is hoped to be better than the Mench, Johnny Estrada, Bush, Graffanino, Bell, etc. of the world.

Braun and Gallardo shouldn't be moved except for the best prospect package you could think of. The deals that Melvin put together for those two will go down as his legacy; like him or not. I would consider McGehee untouchable as well. Those that want to sell high on McGehee haven't bought onto the fact that we may actually have found a true diamond in the rough here. Understandable, but I think Casey is the real deal.

Speculation on Fielder will change a ton before July 20th, which is the time the Brewers will look to make a deal (if at all this season). The Brewers need to wait for teams making playoff pushes to get desperate and offer better packages. It's just too early to speculate.

Although I didn't think so before I see Tampa as a real possibility for Fielder as they lose Pena. This would get them a situation where he could DH/1B for their playoff push and allow them to let Pena walk next season. I would be very intrigued with a Fielder for Hellickson/Moore. We may just be able to pull that off too as Moore hasn't been the brightest star this season, but has a ton of upside. Hellickson is virtually major-league ready and could come up in September.

I also say Atlanta fits this mold. But I think it's optimistic to see them part with Julio Teheran as that's definately who we'd be after. Fielder for Teheran and Freeman wouldn't be bad. Fielder for Teheran and Delgado would be ideal.
