Todd Coffey to the DL; Update: Activated, Smith outrighted to Nashville

I think the odd man out will be Braddock but wouldn't really care if they lost Smith.

It's contracts (specifically the clause in Capuano's) that again may dictate a roster move. Capuano should still be starting every 5th day in Nashville, building his stamina and strength. I don't think his agent did him any favors by forcing the Brewers hand so quickly. Instead, Capuano may end up temporarily at least as lefty specialist.

That being said, they should just cut ties with Hoffman. More likely is that they figure Smith will agree to an assignment and they'll try to sneak him through waivers. They also may put Riske on waivers in hope he'll be claimed and save them some money.

The really interesting move will come when Davis comes back. The starting pitching lately has stabilized in recent weeks. Hard to see Davis as an improvement.

At risk of jinxing things...the team is 7-7 in June, 6-4 in the last 10 games. There are signs of stabilizing. It's time to cut Hoffman and go with the best 25 players available for the next 30 days. See where they are at that point.

It probably a little too early for a trade, but that might help the situation.

I would imagine Smith would be the first option, even if it meant a DFA situation. Optioning Braddock is probably the second move. I can't imagine they move Axford right now, as he is our closer.

The next step is Davis going to Class AAA Nashville for two rehabilitation starts, Saturday and June 24, before the Brewers re-evaluate his status and determine when to activate him from the disabled list (pericarditis, an inflammation of the lining around the heart).
Per Witrado. So they've got a week to decide. I just hope they don't mess up the rotation, now that it has started to stabilize

You mean now that Macha actually made a decision on who to keep in the rotation instead of skipping starts and flipping guys in and out of the rotation.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

sheethead]I really wish Davis would just go away. I can't believe I have felt that way about so many of the Opening Day players, but there are still two left to deal with (this year).

I think those are the sentiments of many. Holding roster spots for non contributors and deciding who is in a rotation/bullpen role based on contracts over performance helped get them into the mess they find themselves in now. They've eaten the big one (Suppan) and there are two more on the plate. Bon Appetite Doug!

If Doug really wants to tick off the fanbase, he will trade Parra or Narveson to make room for Davis in the rotation.

That would definitely tick me off. I think the more likely route would be to trade Dave Bush, who has pitched okay since his 1/3 inning, 7 run blow up. He is gone after this season and some team in need of a 4/5 starter may take him. I can't imagine we'd get much more than salary relief and a low-level minor leaguer, but that's more than we'll get when he walks after the season. I'd rather lose him than someone who may be able to help the team for the next few seasons.

What I believe will happen (barring injury) is Braddock getting sent down and Parra getting moved back to the pen. That's not what I want to see, just what I think we'll see. Of course, I never would have guessed Heether would be thrown away, so I wouldn't be surprised by much of anything that happens.

Braddock will be sent down to avoid any further decisions, and when Davis come back I'm guessing Smith will just get DFA'd.
You're probably right about Smith, but that's just another cheap player that could help for a number of years that we're going to give away. He may not be a top talent, but in AAA this year he had 29 k and only 6 BB in 21 innings (I know, small sample) with 16 saves and a 1.71 ERA. He could definitely fit in as a middle reliever next year for $400k instead of going out and spending a couple of million dollars on a veteran player with similar talents.

We're really stuck this season on 40-man space in part due to injuries, but also due to the fact that all of our "role players" are vets who can't be sent to the minors. Honestly, if there is any chance that Smith would be in our bullpen next year, I would much rather release Hoffman or give Bush away in trade (otherwise he'd stay in the rotation and Parra would be relegated to mop up duty) than simply DFA'ing Smith. But, I'm sure you are correct and that is the route we will go.

It wouldn't be too popular, but how secure really is Capuano?

Capuano forced their hand to bring him up and because the rotation was in such a flux at the time, it made some sense. I can't imagine that set all that well considering the organization stuck with the guy for so long when they really didn't have to. I'm sure they'd much prefer he was pitching in AAA right now. It's very debatable if another team would claim him off of waivers. So they may just take a chance, see if he clears. and try to sign him to again to a minor league deal. Or it could be they'd just declare him to have a tender elbow and give him some DL time.

It's funny how where a team is in a season affects decisions. For the first couple months, teams often will stick with players no matter what. But there comes a time when that period is over and nothing is guaranteed from that point on. The Suppan release may have signified that Brewers are in the next phase of the season. The next 4-6 weeks are critical weeks with lots of home games and the deadline looming after that.

I think Davis should go to the bullpen when he comes back.

Except there's no room out there either. Hopefully Davis will agree to rehab assignment so they can park him there for a while.

No, I think this is a no brainer. Davis to the bullpen when he comes back. They can make room.
