Best week of live music in my life!

brewcrewreview

Last Sunday, I went and saw Kenny Chesney with some buddies at Country Thunder. The sound was pretty bad for a big concert setting, but Kenny always puts on a great show.

Then on Tuesday I treated my old man to tenth row seats to see John Fogerty. This was third time I've seen Mr. Fogerty and he just gets better and better every time. Amazing energy, still has the powerful, distinctive all-American voice, and a hell of a guitar player! People of all ages were on their feet and dancing in the aisles. What an amazing live performer!

Then last night a buddy and I saw Keith Urban at the Bradley Center. This was the sixth time I've seen Keith Urban and like Fogerty, I can't believe each show he does trumps his others, even when I think it isn't possible. I saw Roger Waters at Summerfest and was amazed by his screen and production, but Keith Urban's sure rivaled that. We were lucky to score some floor seats on EBAY from a broker in California for less than face value and when Keith and his band played on the catwalk for five or six songs, we were lucky enough to be only fifteen feet away from him. Like Fogerty, Keith Urban is an excellent live performer with a powerful voice, excellent guitar playing skills and a commanding stage presence.

I go to tons of shows, but I know that I'll never see another week of excellent live music like the one I did this week.

Anyone here go to any of these shows and what did they think?

Oh, yeah, Keith Urban and that great Australian country music.

Give me a break. Keith Urban, Toby Keith, and Kenny Chesney are country bashers, judging by the way they make the music they do and pass it off as country. It's adult contemporary or something.

Sweet, sounds like a nice week. I haven't been to Country Thunder in a few years, but it's probably the most fun drinking atmosphere I've ever experienced.

As for Kenny Chesney, I heard him at Country Thunder back when I was just getting in to country about 5 years ago. It's not the stage, it's him. I didn't know the lyrics to his songs, and I couldn't make out the enunciation of many words. Most in country are very understandable, but it just seems like he keeps the microphone too close to his mouth. Still, you can't help but enjoy the energy.

I know of two country singers from Australia right now, but I'm sure there's another that was on the airwaves a year or two ago. Supposedly there's a strong tradition of American Country music in Australia, and I know that Elton John ( a personal favorite) has long enjoyed Country.

To be honest, much of Country music is the new pop. late-90s pop turned into some awful crap, with songs that are jibberish, singers with poor voices, and all what was pop music evolved into hip hop, country, or hard rock. Country is the only music of the group that I can enjoy, as it has a lot of personality, stories, experiences, and emotions in the songs. It's funny how much I hated country in the late 90s, but how now I find it the only music that I can listen to besides classic rock and other artists like Clapton, Elton John, Billy Joel, Mellencamp, et al.

And brettac, what's with all the negativity lately? It seems like this is one of the first posts lately where you didn't get in a jab at Estrada, yet it's still negative. Everything alright man?

Greatest week ever:

U2 in Madison, Ozzfest at Alpine Valley and Tonic/Soul Asylum at Summerfest.

Yeah... hell of a week!

This was 1997, I do believe.

Nah, everything's fine. I guess I don't think I've been that negative. Heck, ripping Johnny Estrada and Kenny Chesney are old pasttimes of mine. As far as I can tell, I'm still optimistic about the Brewers. Otherwise, I guess I'm not sure where I've been that negative, at least anymore than usual.

And Vince Gill can be good, at least he has some talent. I even bought that box set that he released last year.

The appeal of modern Nashville eludes me. I love country, but what comes out of Nashville doesn't sound like country to me. I love live music, but to get my country fix, I have to small honky tonks and hear mostly obscure local or regional artists. I live near Houston, so it's not that hard to find some good country music either from Houston's small local scene or from Austin's much larger one.
