ROUND 1: Dylan Covey - RHP
6'2", 195, R/R, Maranatha HS (CA)

(Miguel Melendez)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Covey is armed with one of the strongest and fastest arms of any draft-eligible pitcher this year. And as good as his stuff is, one of the most impressive things he does is to disrupt the timing off the opposing batters, showing an advanced knowledge of pitching. He is fearless and aggressive, and does a really nice job owning the outside corner to right-handed batters. He has a slow windup but a fast arm, although there appears to be some effort to his delivery. An overall plus athlete with loose actions, he’s built strongly with broad shoulders and a strong lower half. His fastball sits in the 89-92 range, can touch 95-96, and he has a great three-pitch mix with a very good curveball and a surprisingly refined changeup. Despite battling some injuries early last summer, he settled down late in the summer and into the fall and put his name in the top 5-10 overall prospects coming into the spring. There were some concerns in recent weeks as he wasn't pitching as well late in the spring and his velocity was down some. He is part of an incredible recruiting class for the University of San Diego.

ROUND 2: Jimmy Nelson - RHP
6'6", 240, R/R, University of Alabama

(AP Photo/John Amis)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Armed with an impressive one-two punch, with an upper-80s to low-90s fastball as well as a nasty slider, Nelson has had no problem missing bats during his career. Prior to this season, he bounced between the bullpen and the starting staff in his first two years at Alabama due to inconsistent results, but thrived in his two summers in between. He opened the 2009 season as the team’s closer, but was quickly removed from that role after blowing three saves early in the SEC conference schedule. He was inserted as the team's Saturday starter to open this year and has thrived, tossing three consecutive complete games towards the end of the season. He doesn't throw particularly hard, but he maintains his velocity well deep into games and keeps the ball down in the zone. His slider is his best pitch, and it is thrown with the exact same arm angle and speed as his fastball, making it that much more difficult to pick up. Nelson has a large and athletic, sturdy frame, clean mechanics and his arm is relatively fresh.

ROUND 3: Tyler Thornburg - RHP

5'11", 185, R/R, Charleston Southern University

http://www.baseballrumormill.com/images/gallery/tyler-thornburg-delivers_184x276.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Thornburg evokes some comparisons to Tim Lincecum thanks to a smallish build, unconventional mechanics and an exaggerated delivery. He comes straight over the top, and pitches consistently in the low-90s with the ability to touch 95, and on a few occasions, 96-97. He also throws a very sharp overhand curve that that is a true swing-and-miss pitch. While he has spent some time as a starter as Charleston Southern, many believe his future lies in short relief, a role he is familiar with haven been used as his team's closer in the past. He served that same role that past two summers playing for the Cape and Valley Leagues, registering eight and 10 saves respectively.

ROUND 4: Hunter Morris - 1B

6'2", 210, L/R, Auburn University

http://i.tsn.com/i/photos/20100413/140651.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Morris turned down a significant bonus from the Boston Red Sox as a second round pick in the 2007 draft to honor his commitment to Auburn. He didn't miss a beat, hitting .351 with 11 bombs on his way to being named the SEC freshman of the year. He followed that up by winning a roster spot with Team USA, although he didn't hit particularly well that summer. He also didn't hit as well during his sophomore year, but still proved to be a natural run producer for the historically strong Tigers offense. After launching eight home runs on the Cape last summer he entered this spring as one of the best power prospects not named Bryce Harper available for this year's draft. He responded with a huge junior season hitting .386 with 23 home runs on his way to being named the SEC player of the year, although he has been prone to strikeouts during his college career. His big, powerful left-handed swing matches his build, but he has also exhibited a patient eye at the plate. As good as his bat is, his glove makes him somewhat of a liability in the field. He doesn't have much range, and overall needs to commit himself to defense to avoid becoming a one-dimensional player. His bat is good enough to overcome such problems, and he's a good enough athlete to improve is he makes it a bigger priority.

ROUND 5: Matt Miller - RHP

http://www.annarbor.com/assets_c/2010/05/4602830704_8b487e9c30_b-thumb-590x441-41379.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

The big, physical and projectable Miller took over as Michigan's closer part way through the 2009 season, enjoying great success in that role, with that success continuing over to the summer where he was named one of the top prospects in the Northwoods League. He pumps his fastball consistently into the low-90s with arm-side run, peaking around 94, and also throws a quality slider that reaches the low-80s. He returned to a versatile swing role for the Wolverines this spring, somewhat out of necessity, and didn't fare quite as well as a starter. The biggest problem is the need for improved command, as he's always walked a lot of batters and seems to perform better when he doesn't have to pace himself. As enticing as it is to try and maximize his potential as a starter, his fearless approach may make him a perfect fit for a short relief role at the next level.

ROUND 6: Cody Hawn - 3B

6'1", 205, L/R, University of Tennessee

http://tnjn.com/content/storyimage/2010/02/26/4377338580_199b6144a0.box.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

This is the second time the Brewers have drafted Hawn, also drafting him in 2007 coming out of high school. He originally committed to Arkansas, but ended up going to Walters State for a year before transferring to Tennessee for his sophomore and junior years. He is a polished left-handed hitter, showing a very keen eye with a smooth stroke and advanced hitting mechanics. He has shown quite a bit of power in each of his three years in college, hitting 59 home runs those three years. He didn't hit as well this year (.327) as he did a year ago (.364), but was considered one of the better pure hitters available this year. There isn't much past the hit tool, and his future likely lies at first base or possibly left field.

ROUND 7: Joel Pierce - RHP

6'4", 185, L/R, Vincent Massey SS (ON)

http://www.windsorstar.com/sports/3378674.bin

(Jason Kryk/The Windsor Star)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Pierce is a live-armed Canadian prep player that continues to add velocity to his fastball as his body continues to mature. His fastball started to top out more regularly in the low-90s this spring after sitting in the 88-90 range last summer and fall, as he has added an inch to his frame and could top out in the 6-foot-5, 210-pound range when he's done growing. He also continues to make very good strides with his slider. He excelled pitching for the Canadian Junior National team in the Dominican Republic in the weeks leading up to the draft. A former two-way prospect as a strong-armed third baseman, he started to focus on pitching in the past year with encouraging results.

(Leslie Westrbrook/The Daily

Advertiser/Gannett)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Ross was part of the same talented recruiting class that brought Anthony Ranaudo to LSU, and while he doesn't have Ranaudo's stuff, Ross has been a bigger part of the Tigers' pitching staff the last three years. He appeared in 52 innings as a freshman, mostly out of the bullpen, 83 a year ago and a team-leading 88 this past year. For as reliable as he has been, he doesn't have the stuff the profile as a staff ace, even at the college level. He's a good athlete with an easy delivery and decent stuff, including a low-90s fastball that shows some sink and a slider that projects to be a solid big-league pitch.

ROUND 9: Yadiel Rivera - SS

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/hs304.ash1/23144_1514434070_9920_n.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Rivera is a tall and rangy shortstop that continues to grow. Despite his listed 6-foot-2 size, there are reports that he may be as tall as 6-foot-4, and even with that size he shows very good defensive tools. He plays the shortstop position easily, with a strong arm, soft hands and excellent range. He shows the ability to make the highlight play as well as the routine one, without much concern about a change of position. How he progresses offensively centers around how much he gets stronger over the next few years. He has the frame to do so, but presently is rail thin, and will need time to mature and develop.

ROUND 10: Rafael Neda - C

http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/photos/2008/04/24/l83434-1.jpg

(Tucson Citizen)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Neda is a strong, chiseled, durable catcher, and has come a long way since his high school days. He has posted impressive numbers at the plate each of his three years at New Mexico, and added power to his game during his junior season by shortening his stroke and driving inside pitching to left field. He has modest potential at the plate with a contact approach and gap power. He has displayed strong catch-and throw skills with a strong arm and good quickness behind the plate, but like many amateur backstops has a few things to work on defensively at the next level.

ROUND 11: Greg Holle - RHP

http://images.townnews.com/troyrecord.com/content/articles/2010/07/10/sports/doc4c391d712677b515601732.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Holle is an athletic, bid-bodied right-hander who has more polish than power, which is not what you may expect from a 6-foot-8, 225-pound pitcher. In high school he thrived as both a pitcher and as a hitter, drawing some comparisons to Richie Sexson as a slugger. On the mound he pitches in the upper-80s to low 90s and mixes in a solid curveball and changeup. He made an immediate impression as a freshman, making 14 starts, but has been used as both a starter and as a reliever the last two years. However, he likely would have started more for TCU had he not been a part of a very talented pitching staff. His mechanics can get out of whack, and overall was rather hittable at the college level. Pitching to contact may suit him better throwing to hitters swinging wood bats.

ROUND 12: John Bivens - OF

6'2", 210, L/R, Virginia State University

http://mckinneybaseball.com/assests1/alumnipics/2009/09JohnBivens.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Bivens started his college career at the University of Virginia where he planned on playing for both the football and baseball team. A very good all-around athlete, he played linebacker, although a series of injuries and missed time severely limited his playing time in both sports. He has trimmed down and decided to focus entirely on baseball, since transferring to Virginia State. He started the season extremely slow, but finished the season strong, and flashed his 5-tool potential with an exciting blend of power and speed. The talent is there, but he is very raw and will require time and patience for him to develop.

ROUND 13: Michael White - RHP

6'6", 185, R/R, Walters State Community College (TN)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/michael-white.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

White has come a long way since the Brewers drafted him in 2008. Both his fastball and breaking ball continue to improve, as he now throws his heater in the low-90s, up a few ticks from a year ago, and his breaking ball has better bite. He does continue to struggle to consistently command the strike zone, although he did go 10-0 this season with 5 complete games, striking out 102 batters in 95 innings of work for perennial juco powerhouse Walters State. Many believe he will continue to get better as he fills out his lanky body, tightens up his delivery and starts to find the strike zone more consistently.

6'3", 215, L/R, University of the Pacific

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/paci/sports/m-basebl/auto_headshot/2653816.jpeg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Walker exhibits a high baseball acumen and is a solid overall athlete with good, not great tools across the board. He has a good glove and a strong arm at third base, and swings a left-handed bat at the plate capable of hitting 15-20 home runs a year with regular playing time. He has exhibited a patient eye at the plate, but his ceiling is limited, likely as a utility player with the ability to play both the infield and outfield corners. At worse, he should fill a valuable spot in the system at third base the next several years.

ROUND 15: Chris Bates - LHP

6'4", 180, L/L, Regis HS (NY)

http://www.fiveborosports.com/multimedia/news_images/ChrisBates.jpg

(Philip Hall)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Bates is a projectable lefty that doesn't throw particularly hard at this point in time, but continues to get better. He has good size, with long, loose proportions and an easy delivery with a few correctable mechanical concerns. His fastball at this point in time is thrown in the mid-to-upper 80s and he also mixes in a slurvy slow curve that also shows promise. Keeping him away from Richmond may be a little difficult, and don't be surprised if he does wind up in college if he's throwing considerably harder three years from now.

(Terry Barner)

SCOUTING REPORT:

After being named the Panhandle Conference's top pitcher a year ago after going 10-2, he went 12-0 this season on his way to being named one of the top juco pitchers in the nation. He has a tall and loose, projectable frame, and a fastball that sits in the low-90s with the ability to touch 94. He also throws a good split-fingered fastball. He struggles with command, as he did strike out 128 batters in 96 innings of work, but also walked 50. If he is unable to improve his command he may be a good fit as a short reliever with closer potential.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/cinn/sports/m-basebl/auto_action/4786430.jpeg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Garman had bounced between starting and relieving up until the second month of his senior year this past season, and really seemed to have taken to a specialist/short relief role during the second half of the spring. He is a shorter/stockier lefty with an upper-80s to low-90s fastball. His best pitcher is his slider, which he can run up to the mid-80s. He profiles as a specialist and could be somewhat fast-tracked in that role, following the footsteps of recent draftees such as Casey Baron, Daniel Meadows, Caleb Thielbar and Jon Pokorny.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3375/3642303160_bab0850bab.jpg

(TheCapeLeague.com)

SCOUTING REPORT:

Keeling profiles similar to Del Howell from a year ago in that he has potentially electric stuff as a left-handed pitcher, but hasn't quite put everything together while in college. He has a loose, projectable frame and an explosive fastball-slider one-two punch. His fastball can sit in the low-90s and he can approach the 94-95 range at times. He also has a wicked slider that is a wicked pitch when its working for him. His delivery isn't picture perfect, and his strike-zone command comes and goes, meaning he still has a lot of work to do at the next level, but could be a steal if it all comes together for him.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Rowan is a powerfully built left-handed slugger with promising offensive tools. It is expected that he will continue to add strength and overall weight to his thick-proportioned frame, and has an equally big swing at the plate. That gives him exciting power potential, but also prone to strikeouts. While he has a strong arm, he will have to move from behind the plate and likely will be restricted to a corner outfield spot or first base, increasing the importance of his hitting skills.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Vucinich's best season for the Cougars came during his freshman year when he hit .316. Since then he has improved his power output, but his batting average has dropped to .230 and .262. There is some pop in his swing, although at the expense of increased strikeouts, as he would be better off shortening his swing and altering his approach to hit for better contact. His glove is his strength, with very good middle infield actions, and a quick, accurate release. He positions himself well, and provides valuable leadership on the infield.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/mars/sports/m-basebl/auto_widephoto/5368436.jpeg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Shackelford is a converted catcher who opened the 2009 season serving as Marshall's primary backstop. Known more for his defensive skills than his prowess at the plate, he hit only .226 in 106 at-bats last year, and opened this year as a pitcher, coming out of the bullpen. He has a strong arm and a slow curveball with good arm speed and an athletic, projectable frame, but not surprisingly struggled with command. He's a work in progress that will require some patience, but he has some upside.

ROUND 22: Kevin Berard - C

5'10", 170, R/R, Barbe HS (LA)

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/v230/152/40/n100000517908850_5046.jpg

SCOUTING REPORT:

Berard is a shorter athlete whose best strength is his versatility. He has played shortstop and third base, showing a strong arm at each position and good quickness. The Brewers drafted Berard as a catcher to take advantage of those tools, where he will be one of the better running catchers in the system. There isn't much power to his game, but he has a line drive bat with a knack for making hard contact.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Bernal is a well-proportioned athlete that has filled out his athletic, projectable frame nicely over the last three years in college. He throws from a three-quarters delivery with a loose arm, throwing his fastball in the upper-80s and can touch the low-90s on occasion. He also throws a slow curveball and a changeup.

ROUND 24: Greg Hopkins - 3B

6'1", 200, R/R, St. John's University

http://allthingsvalleyleague.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341bfe6a53ef0120a69e6e2a970c-800wi

SCOUTING REPORT:

Hopkins is something of a 2B/3B 'tweener in that he doesn't have the ideal arm strength for third base and doesn't have the ideal quickness and range for second. There is some power in his balanced, level swing, but he is more of a line drive hitter. A steady college performer and a solid overall athlete, he may settle in as a versatile utility infielder, as he does have some experience at shortstop as well.
