Would the police actually lie?

SheetsCyYoung04

What I've been told by both cops and lawyers: police are absolutely allowed to (and encouraged to) lie if the objective is to elicit a confession. One of the sources is a retired cop in my family.

In court, police, like everyone else, are required to tell the truth.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

well of course they will lie to a suspect in order to get a confession i.e. "We know what you did so you might as well tell us" or "your friend is going to cut a deal and rat you out, so if i were you Mr. Vick i would tell us exactly what was going on there."

There are no quotas but if a officer is on patrol and doenst produce any tickets they might wonder what he is doing out there. I would say that 90% of people are breaking some law while driving in a certain day, speeding, eating, talking on a cell phone(which should be illegal).

As for going through the light, if the light turns red at anytime you are in the intersection then you are guilty of going through a red light.

I have gotten 2 speeding tickets in my life, both times the radar was real close to what I was going, and both times the officers were classy and handeled the situation well.

However to answer the thread question, he could have lied, just as any person doing any profession can lie or slip up. This isn't an attack on Police Officers at all, I am just saying there is a possibility that he was wrong, just like anyone can mess up at work.

Do you have a front license plate? The officer saw it as he passed, ran it on his computer, and it came back expired.

Shouldn't he be concentrating on driving, and not screwing around on the computer?

I'm curious TracyThom, even if quotas are illegal, are police expected to produce roughly a certain number of tickets even if there is no exact set quotas?

Departments are allowed to set performance standards. Basically they can have rules that state, "An officer must make 15 traffic stops per month." They cannot say, "An officer must write 15 tickets a month." The latter would be a quota.

I know the State Patrol's standard is that an officer must have at least 2 contacts per shift. For State Patrol, a contact could mean either a broken down vehicle or a traffic stop. Like someone else mentioned, departments have to have some kind of standard to maintain that the officer is not out there sleeping for 8 hours.

Departments are allowed to set performance standards.

This is spot on.

Quota may not be the best word to use, but in a round about way, that's effectively what they are.

I have had a lot of family members spend their life in law enforcement, including a county sheriff. I can tell you small municipalities are pretty shady sometimes with regard to traffic violations. There are sometimes politics involved, and revenue generated from traffic stops can justify a municipality's existence.

The amount of revenue the city of Milwaukee gets from parking tickets is astounding.

It's just a ticket!...

God I hate those shirts, and that town. Always hiding by the school on one side of town, or the bushes on the other. Every single Badger game I go to I see at least 2 people pulled over.
