Final: Cedar Rapids 8, Wisconsin 3

Rattlers can't slow down the Kernels

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS,

IA – The Cedar Rapids Kernels went into Saturday’s game against the

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers as winners of 10 of their last 11 games.

Wisconsin had an early lead, but the Western Division leading Kernels

scored

eight runs in the middle innings to pull away for their eleventh win in

their

last twelve games. Cedar Rapids had 12 hits as they beat Wisconsin for

the sixth time in eight meetings this season.

The Rattlers (18-31)

grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings.

Chris

Dennis tripled in a run with two outs in the first inning. Khris Davis

grounded into a double play with runners at the corners in the third to

allow a

run to score.

Wisconsin

starting pitcher Maverick Lasker kept the Kernels (31-18) at bay through

three

innings. But, in the fourth, Justin Bass drove in the first Cedar

Rapids

run with a two-out single.

In the fifth,

the Kernels grabbed the lead. Jon Karcich drew a leadoff walk.

Carlos Jimenez doubled to left to score Karcich with the tying run. One

out later, Matt Long drove in Jimenez with another double for a 3-2

Kernels

lead. An error on a grounder off the bat of Jean Segura let Long score.

Davis got the

Rattlers back to within a run on a leadoff homer in the top of the sixth

inning. But, the Kernels responded with four runs in the bottom of the

sixth.

Efrain Nieves

relieved Lasker to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Luis Jimenez

singled and Bass followed with a single. Jimenez took third on the play

and Bass went to second on the throw to third. Jeremy Cruz sent a

grounder to short and Jimenez was caught in a rundown between third and

home. He would score when he knocked the ball out of the glove of

Nieves

at the plate.

Karcich was

next and he doubled into the right field corner to plate two more runs.

Karcich made the score 8-3 when he scored on a wild pitch.

The Rattlers

did put two runners on to start the top of the eighth inning, but Cedar

Rapids

turned a double play to kill the rally. Wisconsin went in order in the

ninth.

The Timber

Rattlers and Kernels continue their series on Sunday afternoon. Jake

Odorizzi (2-1, 3.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the

Rattlers.

Cedar Rapids sends Stephen Locke (0-0, 3.00) to the hill.

Tune in for

the action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at

1:45pm. Game time is 2:05pm.

Wisconsin box score

Lasker allowed four runs in five innings on six hits and a walk, striking out one. D'Vontrey Richardson and Scooter Gennett each had two hits, and Gennett also drew a walk. Cameron Garfield and Cutter Dykstra were 0-4. Dykstra and Gennett each committed errors--wow, how does Dykstra have eight already? Mike Trout, the Rattlers' bete noire, was 2-4.

Final: Fort Myers 3, Brevard County 2

Brevard County box score

Well, it looks like Kentrail Davis is injured--again. The lefty was 3-3 but was removed for a pinch runner in the 5th inning. The Manatees had 14 hits but could only plate the two runs. Matt Cline also had three, while Brock Kjeldgaard, Sean Halton, and Shawn Zarraga each had two. Erik Komatsu was 1-5, and Josh Prince was 0-2 after coming on as Davis's pinch runner. Sinkerballer Trey Watten tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing six hits, walking three, striking out three, and posting a 7/2 GO/AO. Reliever Brandon Ritchie followed and allowed all three of the Miracle's runs.

Brevard County play-by-play

Here's the sequence in which Davis was apparently injured:

Brevard County Bottom 5th

  • Erik Komatsu singles on a
line drive to left fielder Jonathan Goncalves.
  • Kentrail Davis
singles on a ground ball to right fielder Evan Bigley. Erik Komatsu out

Final: Nashville 5, Iowa 3

Sounds win 5-3 on second straight walk-off home run

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning,

first baseman Joe Koshansky crushed a walk-off, three run homer to

propel the Nashville Sounds over the Iowa Cubs, 5-3, on Saturday night

at historic Greer Stadium.

In his first Triple-A at-bat, Chuck Caufield walked off reliever Blake

Parker (1-2) with one out in the bottom of the ninth to begin the rally.

Josh Anderson then followed with his second hit of the contest, with

Caufield advancing to third on the base hit. Caufield reduced the Iowa

lead to one when he scored on a fielding error during Ray Olmedo's next

at-bat. After an Adam Heether flyout, Koshansky belted Parker's 2-2

pitch over the right field wall to end the game.

With the win, Nashville (28-20) improved its record in divisional play

to 12-4 on the year, the best such mark among the 16 PCL clubs, and

notched its second straight last-bat victory and 10th of the season.

David Riske (2-0) picked up the win in his fourth rehab appearance for

the Brewers. The right-hander gave up two unearned runs while fanning

one in two innings of work. Left-hander Mitch Stetter also threw one

shutout inning in relief, striking out two in the process.

Koshansky finished the contest 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.

Olmedo added two hits and two runs scored with an RBI, his third

consecutive multi-hit contest.

For his fourth quality start in his last five outings, Chris Waters

surrendered just one run on four hits with four walks and four

strikeouts over six innings pitched for a no decision.

The Sounds jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Olmedo

singled to left field, stole second base, and then came home on an

RBI-single by Koshansky for a 1-0 Sounds lead.

The Cubs tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. With two outs

in the inning, Waters walked Sam Fuld, and then gave up two consecutive

singles to plate Fuld and tie the game.

Bryan LaHair and Bobby Scales opened the ninth inning with singles off

Sounds right-hander Riske, with both runners advancing an extra base on a

fielding error. The next batter Chris Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to

deep center field that scored LaHair for the go-ahead run and advanced

Scales to third. Pinch hitter Jim Adduci then followed with another

sacrifice fly, a foul pop fly down the left field line that plated

Scales for a 3-1 Iowa lead.

Thomas Diamond also took a no decision, giving up one run with two walks

and five strikeouts in six innings. Jeff Samardzija followed with a

scoreless frame, retiring the side on seven pitches.

The Sounds and Cubs will play at 2:30 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at

historic Greer Stadium in the third game of a four-game series.

Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (6-3, 4.67) takes the mound against Iowa

right-hander Casey Coleman (5-3, 3.36).

Nashville box score

Listen to Koshansky's blast here. Nothing better than sticking it to the Cubs, at any level. Heether was 0-4 with a walk.

Final: Birmingham 4, Huntsville 2

Stars slammed by Barons

Aaron Morse/Huntsville Stars

Sometimes one swing of the bat can be the difference in a game.

That was certainly the case Saturday night as Salvador Sanchez’s

grand slam home run was the reason the Huntsville Stars (33-36) lost to

the Birmingham Barons (17-31) by a final score of 4-2.

Early on, it was the Stars who looked to be in control.

With

one away in the first, Lee Haydel found a hole on the right side for a

single. Brett Lawrie grounded out, but on the play Haydel moved into

scoring position. After Mat Gamel walked, Zelous Wheeler smoked a

single up the gut to drive in Haydel and give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

They’d strike again in the second. Drew Anderson continued to rake as

he doubled to start the frame. One out later Martin Maldonado hit a

grounder to short and Birmingham’s Robbie Hudson attempted to get

Anderson going to third, but the throw hit Anderson in the back and

everyone was safe. That’s when Lorenzo Cain came up huge with a base

knock to right and the Stars had a nice 2-0 advantage.

But the

lead would be short lived. With two outs and a runner on fist, Stars

starter Amaury Rivas walked back-to-back hitters. The lack of control

came back to burn him when Sanchez unloaded on a pitch for a grand slam

to give the Barons a 4-2 edge.

Rivas (5-3) pitched well, going

7 innings, scattering 5 hits, and giving up 4 runs, while walking 3 and

striking out 6. But he took the loss due to the one mistake to

Sanchez.

The Stars’ offense could get nothing going all night,

as their last 10 hitters in the game were retired in order by Barons

pitching.

Wheeler had a good day at the plate, going

3-4 with a RBI. Cain also had a multi-hit game, as he was 2-5

with a RBI.

Jhonny Nunez (1-4) earned his first win of the

year, going 5 innings scattering 6 hits, while giving up 2 runs, only 1

of which was earned.

Anthony Carter pitched the ninth inning to

pick up his fifth save of the year.

With the loss, the Stars

lose the series and fall to six games back of the Tennessee Smokies in

the North Division.

The finale of the five-game set is Sunday

afternoon. Tune to www.huntsvillestars.com starting at 12:45 pm central

time for all the action. Alex Periard (2-3, 4.18 ERA) will be on the

mound for the Stars.

Huntsville box score

Rivas continues to get ground balls, 11/4 GO/AO today. Lawrie and Caleb Gindl were both 0-4. Gamel drew two walks.

They call E's like mad in the low minors, not to mention the crappy fields and lighting. Everyone has a ton of errors in A ball.

Yea every team has 93 errors through 49 games.

Wisconsin leads the league with 84 errors, the error I attributed to Dennis was actually Dykstra, my bad Chris, however that's 84 errors in 49 games. I was obviously exaggerating for effect above.

Fort Wayne (San Diego) was tied with WI coming into today with 81 but had clean a defensive game. The next closest team is Peoria (Cubs) 70, the best team is Bowling Green (Tampa Bay) with only 45 errors in 49 games. Even if you can explain away ten of those 84 errors (which would be highly unlikely as I listen to most of the games) the T-Rats are still one of the 3 worst defensive teams in the league. Also the T-Rats have the advantage of playing on Time Warner Cable Field which is one of the better tracks in the league.

This has been a bad defensive team so far this season.

Manatees fall 3-2 on Military Appreciation night

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA -One night after being one-hit, the Brevard County Manatees pounded out 14 hits, but came up one run short as the Fort Myers Miracle topped the Manatees 3-2 on Saturday night in front of 2,711 fans on Military Appreciation Night at Space Coast Stadium.

The Manatees got on the board early with a run in the first with a two-out RBI single by Kentrail Davis that scored All-Star Sergio Miranda. Brock Kjeldgaard would then reach after being hit by a pitch. Sean Halton then followed with a single to left and Davis tried to score from second, but was thrown out to end the inning and keep the game at 1-0.

Brevard County would benefit from another two-out RBI in the second as All-Star Matt Cline doubled to left to score Shawn Zarraga.

Manatees starting pitcher Trey Watten threw 4 2/3 innings of shut-out ball and allowed six hits, while walking three and striking out three, but left quite a jam for Brandon Ritchie in the top of the fifth.

Fort Myers had the bases loaded with two outs and it took Ritchie just one pitch to get out of it as Chris Parmelee flew out to right field.

Brevard County loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs, but Anderson De La Rosa struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to leave them loaded.

Miracle third baseman Deibinson Romero led off the bottom of the sixth with a towering solo home run to left field on a 3-2 pitch. Ritchie settled down after that and retired the side.

Fort Myers loaded the bases up in the seventh against Ritchie and he was able to trade two outs for one run as Estarlin De Los Santos grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Nate Hanson and tied the game at 2-2.

One batter later, a wild pitch by Ritchie with Parmelee at the plate scored Jhonathan Goncalves and gave the Miracle a 3-2 lead.

Corey Frerichs relieved Ritchie with one on and one out in the top of the eighth and was able to get out of a jam as he induced a 5-4-3 double play ball off the bat of Evan Bigley.

A one-out bloop double by Cline in the eighth put the tying run on for the Manatees but after a Sergio Miranda groundout moved Cline to third, Erik Komatsu was unable to drive him in as he struck out swinging.

Brevard County had one last chance to tie it in the ninth, when Halton reached with two outs on a throwing error by De Los Santos. Steve Braun would pinch run for Halton and Zarraga would rip a 2-1 pitch into the right center field alley to put runners on first and third with two outs.

De La Rosa came up with the chance to tie it but after fouling off several pitches with a 1-2 count, he struck out swinging to end the game.

Cline and Davis had three hits each, while Kjeldgaard, Halton and Zarraga added two each as well. Davis left the game in the fifth due to an apparent injury.

The Manatees went just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 15 men on base.

Brevard County and Fort Myers will close out their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM (12:05 Central) in Viera.
