Can Bill Hall pitch? YES

I think BF.net can just shut down now. It has reached the highest of heights.

Agreed. The great prophesy has come to pass. Time to shut 'er down.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Thought this was interesting:

The Ballad of Bill Hall

Hall's Post game comments:

“I felt good. Haven’t pitched since high

school, so it was always something that if I ever got the chance, I

always wanted to do and just see if I still had it. … I almost got

drafted as a pitcher. I threw pretty hard, so it was fun to get back out

there.”

“I’m not that good. I’ll keep leaving it

up to those guys over there … but there comes a time when you’re going

to have to help your team out, save the bullpen a little bit. Hopefully

we can come out with a saved bullpen tomorrow, still have Bard, Pap and

all these guys that can come in and help us out when we need them.”

“They told me not to turn it loose. I

threw hard in high school, I threw around 95 in high school,

but they wouldn’t let me turn one loose or throw a curveball. I’ve got a

pretty good curveball too. … If I shake (Varitek) off, he’s giving me

another fastball, so saw no use to shaking him off. He told me before we

left the bullpen, I told him ‘I’ve got a curveball too and a changeup.’

He said, ‘I’m sticking down one.’”

(When did they approach you to pitch?)

“It was right when Oki got into a little bit of trouble and they brought

Nelson in. He’s on his third day right now … they said, ‘do you want to

pitch.’ I was like, ‘yeah.’ Took off all the tape and went out there

and tried to help the team.”

(How were they aware of your pitching

prowess?) “I don’t think they were. Couple of the players knew, but I

haven’t done it since high school.”

(Could you catch?) “Funny thing is, I

was the emergency catcher the other day in Tampa Bay after Victor

(Martinez) got hurt. … I’ve been in the bullpen a few times in my career

catching. Came out on a double switch. Our bullpen catcher was hurt in

Milwaukee one time, so I had to go out there and be the bullpen catcher a

little while, so … haven’t done that since high school either. I

would like to play all the positions on the field, but I don’t know

about catching. I told them don’t expect me to block anything

if they do put me out there.”

“I’ve been blessed with enough athletic

ability to be able to move around and I just like being on the field.

This is a game that I love, and that I’ve loved since I was born, so

whenever I’m out there it doesn’t matter where I’m at. I’m having fun

and giving it my all. … As long as I’m on the field, it’s where I want

to be.”

Despite his struggles I've always really liked Bill too. What really needs to happen is for Bill to become the 5th player ever to play all nine positions in the same game. He can pitch, he could probably handle catching for an inning based on his comments and could easily play the other 7. It would have to be a late season meaningless game. I still remember when Campy was the first to do it.

So, for anyone out there familiar with how to do this stuff, how about a face book campaign ala Betty White started by brewerfan.net urging the Red Sox to let Bill do it in a suitable late season game.
