Umpires ego?

Bill Hohn hasn't exactly been a poster boy for good umpiring, though. And he *does* seem to have a quick trigger.

Update: MLB sides with Oswalt

Astros ace Roy Oswalt didn't win Monday's game, but he apparently has

won a fight with umpire Bill Hohn.

Bob Watson, the Major League

Baseball vice president in charge of discipline, rules and on-field

operations, told Houston television station KRIV that Oswalt will not be

penalized further for being ejected from Monday's game against the

Nationals and that umpire Bill Hohn will be addressed "in a very stern

way."

Watson said Hohn will get a phone call to discuss the matter

with Mike Port, MLB's VP in charge of umpires.

Oswalt was ejected

in the third inning of a 14-4 loss at Minute Maid Park when his 2-2

pitch to Nationals left fielder Josh Willingham was called a ball and

the pitcher looked toward the first base line and yelled something.

Hohn

removed his mask and barked at Oswalt, who then said, "I ain't talking

to you." Hohn then ejected him

"I have never seen that before,"

Oswalt told reporters. "I was actually upset that I threw a ball that

ended up a little bit off the plate. I was actually talking to myself on

the mound and I wasn't even looking his way.

"When I turned

around, he was pointing at me saying something like, 'Keep your mouth

shut,' or something," Oswalt said. "I couldn't really tell you what he

said. I told him that I wasn't talking to him, and he kept on talking."

Oh wow. It was the first base umpire that ejected him?

Can him. Someone needs to be made an example of sooner or later. It should have been West, but this will suffice.

No, Oswalt was looking towards the first base side and Hohn (behind the plate) told him to keep his mouth shut. Oswalt told him he wasn't talking to him, so Hohn tossed him for apparently talking back to him. How dare he.

Ned Yost was ejected today for the first time as Royals manager, but he was justified in his actions. Jason Kendall disagreed when home plate umpire Mike Estabrook called a pitch from Zack Greinke a ball, but didn't do it in an obvious way (looks like he might've just said something while in his crouch). Greinke went to get set for his next pitch, but stepped off the mound when he saw that Estabrook called time walked into the left-handed batter's box and started yelling at Kendall while Kendall remained in his crouch. Yost came out to defend Kendall and got tossed within a few seconds.

Video from MLB.com. The second half shows everything from the camera behind home, where you can see Estabrook call time and start berating Kendall.

Estabrook is apparently a minor league umpire filling in for this game. I think it's safe to say he won't be getting another big league call anytime soon.
