Bowman is pitching well through 5, only 1 ER allowed. I'm pleased that his BB rate is trending downward thus far in career, currently 3.2, and his K rate is back over 7 thus far this season. It's too bad he's given up 6 HR already, his ERA would be very respectable without the 6 HRs in 39 IP. I hope this is a just a blip on the radar, he only gave up 6 HR all of last season.

Yep that's very handy, if they start adding some rates, WHIP, and so on I might never have to use baseball-reference again.

Lawrie is batting .324 over his last 10 games, that's nice to see. Outside of Lawrie, Wheeler, and Cain everyone else on the team has been slumping. As I'm typing this Errecart homers, his BA had dropped all the way to .219. Gamel 1 for 3 in his continuing rehab.

edit. Right after I hit post Cain doubles, his OPS is currently .949 according to Gameday, with the sample size getting larger by the day, over 100 ABs now.

Too bad, Bowman runs out of gas, leaving lots of pitches up in the 6th and now the 7th, Kintzler in to finish off game 1. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

edit. Kintzler allows both of his inherited runners to score, then 1 of his own, he finally has an ERA. Stars up 6-5 now with 2 out and a runner on 1st.

edit 2. Kintzler gets the K to end game 1... a more cynical poster would think he just wanted the save.

Final: Huntsville 6, Birmingham 5 (7 innings)

Huntsville box score

The Stars led 6-2 entering the 7th and nearly faltered, but Brandon Kintzler came on and, despite allowed his first earned run of the year, nailed down the 6-5 victory. Starter Michael Bowman entered the 7th having given up two runs on seven hits and a walk but allowed singles to two of the first three hitters, both of which came around to score. He struck out three. Lorenzo Cain had a big day with the stick, 3-4 with a double, and new/old Star Drew Anderson added a single and double. Every other starter notched exactly one hit, with Lee Haydel adding a walk (keep it up, Lee) and his ninth stolen base.

Huntsville play-by-play

By the skin of their teeth:

Birmingham Top 7th

  • Salvador Sanchez singles on a
ground ball to center fielder Lorenzo Cain.
  • Tyler Kuhn flies
out to left fielder Lee Haydel.
  • John Shelby III singles on a
fly ball to left fielder Lee Haydel. Salvador Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Brandon Kintzler replaces
    Michael Bowman.
  • Dale Mollenhauer flies out to right fielder
    Caleb Gindl.
  • Robert Hudson doubles (1) on a fly ball to center
fielder Lorenzo Cain. Salvador Sanchez scores. John Shelby III
    scores.
  • Jim Gallagher singles on a fly ball to right fielder
    Caleb Gindl. Robert Hudson scores.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Brent Morel strikes out swinging, catcher Martin Maldonado to
    first baseman Chris Errecart.

Heckathorn has been very solid through 5. 4H, 1ER, 0BB, 4K, ERA rapidly approaching 3.0

He just pitched a scoreless 6th, he's right around 75 pitches going to the 7th, wish our MLB staff would do the same.

You can't pitch yourself into a save situation. Because Kintzler entered with the tying run on deck, it was already a save situation.

I was extremely excited about Cain going into last year, the injuries were a big downer, but still had my hopes up for him coming into this season. Am I overly optimistic hoping he could put up a .300/.390/.410 line as the leadoff hitter for the Crew either to start the year next year or at some point in the middle of next year (playing RF after Hart is gone - but that's for another conversation)

Stars hold on, knock off Barons in game one of doubleheader

Aaron Morse/Huntsville Stars

Everyone in the Huntsville Stars’ (23-23) lineup

tallied a hit and a late Chris Errecart home run was the difference as

they got back to .500 with a 6-5 victory over the Birmingham Barons

(14-31) in game one of Thursday’s double header.

The Stars

jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the third. Drew Anderson,

just assigned to Huntsville from Nashville yesterday, doubled to

lead-off the frame. Two outs later, Lorenzo Cain continued his hot

hitting by singling him home. The base knock gave Cain an eight-game

hitting streak.

Huntsville got some help from one of the

major leaguers currently rehabbing with the squad in the fourth when Mat

Gamel singled with one away. With two outs, Caleb Gindl hit a chopper

to the right side, pitcher Justin Edwards was late covering the bag and

Gindl arrived safely. The break gave the Stars new life and Anderson

took advantage as he singled to left to drive in Gamel.

The

Barons would cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth against Stars’

starter Michael Bowman. Cole Armstrong doubled to start things off.

Two outs later John Shelby III delivered a clutch RBI triple that Lee

Haydel nearly caught up against the wall out in left-center field.

But the Stars’ offense exploded in the bottom half. Martin Maldonado

hit a ringing double which was quickly followed by a Cain single to

center. With runners at the corners, Haydel drew a walk to load the

bases. That’s when Brett Lawrie came up big with a 2-RBI single to

extend the lead to 4-1 and take-over the team lead in RBI. The base hit

chased Edwards from the game. New pitcher Andrew Dobies was victimized

by a Zelous Wheeler single to right which drove home Haydel.

The Barons got one back in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single

from Christian Marrero.

With the score 5-2, Errecart smacked a

homer to left that extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

That long ball would turn out to be huge as the Barons tallied two runs

off Bowman and one run off closer Brandon Kintzler in the top of the

seventh. But Kintzler got Brent Morel to strike-out to end the game and

earn his ninth save of the year. Bowman got the win to move to 4-4

while Edwards took the loss to fall to 2-2.

Cain, Anderson,

and Lawrie had the biggest days at the plate as Cain went 3-4 with a run

scored and a RBI. Meanwhile Anderson went 2-3 with a run scored and a

RBI as well. Lawrie went 1-4, but his one hit got him 2 RBI.

The

win breaks a three-game losing streak for the Stars and moves them back

to five games behind the Smokies in the North Division.

Final: Kane County 3, Wisconsin 2

Cougars stop Rattlers' win streak

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL –

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers could not hold on for their sixth win in a

row. Wisconsin

took a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning at Elfstrom Stadium on Thursday

night. But, the Kane County Cougars got a two-run double from Kent

Walton

for a 3-2 lead. The Cougars would hold on in the top of the ninth to

snap

their eight-game losing streak.

Scooter

Gennett walked with one out, stole second and went to third on a

throwing error

in the top of the first inning. Khris Davis drove in Gennett with a

grounder to second for a 1-0 Wisconsin lead.

Kane County

(21-27) answered in the bottom of the second inning. Anthony Aliotti

singled with one out and stole second. Franklin Hernandez singled to

left

with two outs to drive in Aliotti.

The Rattlers

(18-29) retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning in a near carbon

copy of

their run in the first. Cutter Dykstra singled, stole second, and went

to

third on a throwing error. Erik Miller’s sacrifice fly to left sent

Dykstra home with the go-ahead run.

Kyle Heckathorn

took the lead and ran with it. The big right-hander kept the Cougars

off

the board for the rest of his outing. Heckathorn tossed a total of

seven

innings; allowed one run on six hits; did not walk a batter and struck

out

five.

Kane County

starting pitcher Dan Straily struck out 10 over seven innings and

allowed three

hits, but was in line for the loss until the Cougars rallied in the

eighth

against the Wisconsin bullpen.

Santo

Manzanillo walked the leadoff batter. One out later, Mike Gilmartin

singled to put runners on first and second. Manzanillo ran the count

full

to Walton. The runners were off on the 3-2 pitch and Walton doubled to

left to drive in both runners to give the Cougars the lead.

Connor Hoehn,

who came on in the top of the eighth inning, struck out the side in the

top of

the ninth to put an end to Wisconsin’s five-game winning streak.

The Timber

Rattlers continue their 13-game road trip on Friday when they start a

4-game

series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Wisconsin sends Nick Bucci (3-1,

1.82) to the mound as their starting pitcher. Cedar Rapids plans to put

Ariel Pena on the hill. Pena, who was transferred from the California

League earlier this week, will be making his first Midwest League start

of 2010.

Game time on

Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium is 6:35pm. Catch the

action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame show at

6:15pm.

Wisconsin box score

As Mehring said, Manzanillo runs it up there near 100 mph but sometimes has no idea where it's going. Still, it shouldn't eclipse another outstanding effort from Heckathorn. The Rattler struck out a ton today, 14 times, with Davis, Chris Dennis, and Pete Fatse each punching out three times. Dennis at least had a double (though it sounded like it could have been scored a single and an error). D'Vontrey Richardson, Gennett, and Davis were all hitless, though Richardson was hit by a pitch and Gennett, as mentioned, walked. Cameron Garfield singled and struck out twice. Hoehn was the Brewers' 21st-round pick in 2007 but didn't sign.

Wisconsin play-by-play

The Rattlers went out with an echo of a whimper:

Wisconsin Top 9th

  • Khristopher Davis called out on
    strikes.
  • Chris Dennis called out on strikes.
  • Cameron
    Garfield strikes out swinging.

Final: Brevard County 4, Fort Myers 3

Brevard County box score

Down 3-0, the Manatees rallied with two runs in the 7th, one in the 8th, and finally pushed the winning run across in the 9th on a walk-off walk, fittingly on the same day the big-league club won in the same fashion. Dan Merklinger struggled with his control but was otherwise effective, allowing two runs in five innings on three hits and four walks while striking out five. Mike Ramlow relieved and struck out four in two innings while allowing a run and was followed by eventual winner Corey Frerichs, who kept the Miracle off the board over the final two frames. Shawn Zarraga led the offense with three hits and drew the winning walk. Kentrail Davis tripled and was hit by a pitch for the 10th time but also whiffed thrice. Matt Cline, Josh Prince, and Scott Krieger each had key two-out RBI singles. Erik Komatsu was 0-3 with a walk and a sac bunt. The opposing starter was former Timber Rattlers tormentor Liam Hendriks, who naturally handcuffed BC for six innings.

Brevard County play-by-play
