We're starting to see some patterns in these tandems (although they could change again quickly) with Kyle Heckathorn, Jake Odorizzi, and Nick Bucci getting more starts than their respective partners, Maverick Lasker, Efrain Nieves, and Del Howell.

Uber-prospect LHP Madison Bumgarner (Giants) goes for the Grizzlies against the Sounds today.

Dykstra at 3B? When did they make that move?

Final: Wisconsin 11, Burlington 2

Bucci stays hot

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE,

WI – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitcher Nick Bucci scattered seven hits

over seven innings and was backed up by a 14-hit attack in an 11-2 win

over the

Burlington Bees on a warm Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

Khris Davis led the way for the offense with four hits and two RBI.

Bucci

has won three consecutive starts.

But it wasn’t

an easy start. Burlington (15-27) scored first. The Bees got a

one-out RBI double from Wil Myers in the first inning to take a 1-0

lead.

That run broke Bucci’s scoreless streak at 15-1/3 innings.

Wisconsin (15-28)

answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Davis singled

in a run to tie the game. Cameron Garfield got a run home from third

with

a grounder to second to put the Rattlers up 2-1.

The Bees tied

the game in the top of the second inning on a two-out RBI double by

Hilton Richardson.

That was all Bucci would allow. He pitched a total of seven innings and

gave up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

The Rattlers

went back in front with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Cutter Dykstra singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Erik Miller

drove in

Dykstra with a single. D’Vontrey Richardson singled later in the

inning to drive in Miller. Richardson scored from first on a double by

Scooter Gennett and an error.

Gennett went

2-for-4 with two runs scored and extended his hitting streak to 12

games, the

longest current hitting streak in the Midwest League.

Bucci went

into cruise control between the third and sixth innings as the Rattlers

added

to their lead with two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by

Dykstra.

In the sixth, Davis singled in a run for the Rattlers to go up 8-2.

In the

seventh, Bucci walked the leadoff hitter and allowed a single to put two

Burlington runners on with no outs. The Rattlers starter retired the

next

three batters to keep the Bees from scoring.

Chris Dennis

tripled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on a

wild

pitch for the final three runs of the game.

Del Howell

came out of the Rattlers bullpen and struck out four over two scoreless

innings

to close out the Bees.

Wisconsin

wraps up their homestand on Monday with an afternoon game against the

Bees.

Damon Krestalude (1-3, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the

Rattlers. Burlington will send Tyler Sample (1-2, 4.89) to the hill.

If you can’t

make it to the game, you may tune in for all the action on AM1280,

WNAM.

The broadcast starts with the Miller Lite Pregame show at 11:45am. Game

time is 12:05pm.

Wisconsin box score

That 7th inning gives you some insight into Bucci's bulldog mentality and the respect he's garnered from the organization. His final line: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. As the hits inevitable start falling against him, he'll have to pick up the strikeouts and cut down on the walks, and that's just what he did today. Great finish from Howell, too; he seems to really be turning things around. Richardson finished 2-4 with a double and a walk. Dennis was 2-4 with a triple and a walk; I'm glad he's back in the cleanup spot. Dykstra and Miller also had two hits. Oddly, what I'm perhaps most encouraged by is Garfield's 0-3 line, coming as it did with two walks, tripling his monthly walk total. Stay patient, Cam.

Burlington Top 7th

  • Rene Oriental walks.
  • Fernando
Cruz singles on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
    Rene Oriental to 2nd.
  • Ryan Wood pops out to pitcher Nicholas
Bucci on the infield fly rule.
  • Allen Caldwell pops out to
third baseman Cutter Dykstra in foul territory.
  • Hilton

Final: Mississippi 9, Huntsville 5

Huntsville box score

The Stars mounted a spirited comeback, rallying to score three times in the 8th to take a one-run lead...and then Nick Green allowed six runs. Oh well. Amaury Rivas, who I'm sure was rather disappointed to be starting in Pearl, MS rather than Minneapolis, MN, was knocked around--11 hits in six innings--but stayed on his feet and allowed just three runs; he struck out four and walked one, throwing 90 pitches, 61 for strikes. His recent wormburning tendencies were not present today, as he coaxed eight air outs against six ground outs. Brett Lawrie had a great day at the plate, 3-4 with his third home run of the year and a walk. He's flashed his pure hitting talent through, but he may finally be making that key adjustment to AA pitching: over his last ten games, he's hitting .361/.452/.667, and most importantly has only struck out three times against six walks, reversing a worrisome early-season K rate. Lorenzo Cain was 1-5, Lee Haydel was 2-4 with a walk, and Caleb Gindl was 1-4 with a walk.

Down at Brevard, Erik Komatsu is now 11-for-11 in SB attempts -- he was 0-for-2 in an abbreviated by injury 26 games last year. Not sure if that's a big part of his game in the future, but he's doing so wisely thus far in 2010.

Gotta love Stu Paul's enthusiasm on the Nashville call.

Mike Jones loaded the bases on walks, all with none out, in the bottom of the 9th of a 2-2 game, and then worked his way out of it, including a force out at the plate off the bat of phenom Buster Posey.

Nashville had scored their two runs on 15 hits (!) through nine, but Drew Anderson just homered to put the Sounds up in the 10th.

Chris Smith coming on for the save. Enjoy the call, Stu! (Listen in, 7:05 Central, if you're around).

Final: Fresno 4, Nashville 3 (11 innings)

Sounds lose 4-3, split series with Fresno

Nashville Sounds

FRESNO, Calif. - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Fresno Grizzlies, 4-3, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Chukchansi Park in the finale of a four-game set.

With a runner on the second base, Fresno's Jesus Guzman drove home the winning run off David Johnson (1-1) with a base hit the bottom of the 11th inning to propel the Grizzlies to a 4-3 win.

With the loss, Nashville (25-17) splits the four-game series with Fresno. Three of the four games in the series were decided by just one run.

Geno Espineli (2-1) earned the win after throwing a scoreless 11th frame, allowing one hit in relief.

Sounds starter Chris Capuano helped his own cause, singling home Nashville's first run of the ball game in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Luis Cruz hit a base hit to reach base earlier in the frame, moved to third on a Ben Johnson single combined with a Fresno throwing error, and then came home on Capuano's RBI-base hit for an early Nashville 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies got to Capuano in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring both runs with two outs to take a 2-1 lead. After the first two batters were retired, Fresno catcher Buster Posey knocked a base hit to left field, followed by a Joe Borchard single to right. Jesus Guzman then singled home Posey to knot the game at 1-1. Capuano proceeded to hit the next batter and then walked home the other run that gave the Grizzlies the 2-1 advantage.

The Sounds tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning. Outfielder Drew Anderson reached base on a single, and then scored in the next at bat thanks to a pinch-hit double to right field by Joe Koshansky off pitcher Waldis Joaquin.

Nashville regained a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning thanks to a solo home run to right field by Drew Anderson off reliever Osiris Matos, his second long ball of the year.

Chris Smith came in the game to close the contest, but blew his second save of the year after allowing a run in the bottom of the 10th frame to end the game. Tyler Graham singled to reach base, stole second, and then came home on a Brad Boyer RBI-single to extend the contest.

Fresno starter Madison Bumgarner scattered 12 hits while allowing one unearned run over 6 2/3 innings pitched.

For his third consecutive quality start for Nashville, Capuano surrendered two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Reliever Mike Jones pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits with five walks and no strikeouts.

Norris Hopper and Adam Heether each added three hits in the defeat.

The Sounds continue out west with their eight-game road trip and open a four-game series with the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-Athletics) beginning tomorrow at 9:05 pm CT at Raley Field in Sacramento. Left-hander Chris Waters (4-1, 2.55) takes the hill against Sacramento right-hander Clayton Mortensen (4-2, 5.03).

Nashville box score

Tough loss for the Sounds. They did a nice job getting hits against Madison Bumgarner, who's been busy reclaiming his spot as one of the best pitching prospects in the game, but couldn't get them across--in fact, their only run against him was driven in with two outs by Capuano.

Final: Charlotte 10, Brevard County 3

Brevard County box score

You know the game's gone wrong when Shawn Zarraga pitches the last innings. Starter Cody Scarpetta fared poorly, going only 2.2 innings while allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, four walks, and a hit batter, striking out only one--probably his worst start since his first. Evan Frederickson was next and was Frederickson-y, getting the last out of the 3rd but walking the first four batters of the 4th, with two wild pitches mixed in, before being mercifully removed. Even the pitcher-friendly FSL can't save you if you walk everyone. On offense, Josh Prince had three hits, Anderson de la Rosa had two, both doubles, and Erik Komatsu had a hit and a walk. Kentrail Davis was 0-4 with a HBP. The aforementioned Zarraga went 0-4 and started at DH before being called upon for mop-up mound duty; the pitcher has to hit if you switch your DH to a field position, but if your DH is pitching, I guess that doesn't matter. Matt Cline didn't play a day after being hit twice and removed from the game. Mat Gamel, continuing his rehab, was 0-2 with a walk.

Brevard County play-by-play

Charlotte Bottom 8th

  • Pitcher Change: Shawn Zarraga
    replaces Lucas Luetge, batting 8th.
  • Stephen Vogt singles on a
line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Greg Sexton flies
out to center fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Leslie Anderson flies
out to right fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • Reid Fronk doubles (11) on a
line drive to right fielder Erik Komatsu. Stephen Vogt scores.
  • Matthew
Hall pops out to second baseman Steve Braun.

Confused about something and interested in an explanation... How is it that Gamel is currently on the 60 day DL, but playing games in A ball? Are minor leagues exempt or something? I am just curious. Thank you.
I'm not 100 % on this, but I think you can be on the DL while playing in the minors and portray like it is a long rehab.

I finally had a chance to watch Bucci's last start from last Tuesday after watching his start prior to that a few days before. He does seem to be dialed in, and is an incredibly intense performer. He also works incredibly quick, and in addition to the fact that he wears #15, he has some Ben Sheets type mound mannerisms to him. His stuff isn't really like Sheets', since he doesn't throw that hard and his curveball isn't that good, but he throws three good pitches, all for strikes. He got strikeouts on all three pitches as well, and overall showed the ability to throw each of the three in a variety of situations. He did a nice job getting out of a few jams that he put himself in to, and is an aggressive pitcher that goes right after hitters. I like how his fastball was his first and primary pitch, using it to set up his changeup and curveball, and he spots his fastball pretty well too. I can see why we heard so much about the organization liking this guy last summer, and wouldn't be surprised to see him promoted aggressively. The only thing holding him back is his experience, as you don't want to rush any young pitch too aggressively given the total number of innings they throw from one season to another.

Arnett is the only pitcher on that staff that I haven't seen pitch this year, but after seeing all of the other guys, I can't believe their W-L record is as bad as it is. There can't be too many staffs in all of the minor leagues as talented as this one.

Thanks for the report, colby. Has Bucci been throwing any cutters or two-seamers?

Players on the DL (either 15-day or 60-day) can be assigned to a minor league club for 20 days (position players) or 30 days (pitchers) on a medical rehab. They don't count against the roster limit of the minor league team.

I've noticed that Gamel has been getting subbed for every game, usually by Steve Braun. Why is he being taken out? Is he still not 100% and they are protecting the shoulder? Shouldn't be for defensive reasons - it's the minors, that's why players are there, to work on things.

This has the Deputy's fingerprints all over it.

Seriously though, they're just protecting him. Gomez came out after six innings in his first rehab start as well. The rest of the team is trying to win the game, but Gamel's just trying to knock off the rust.

Yes, it did look like he could take a little off of his fastball for added downward movement. It's not a lot of sink, but enough to prove he can add and subtract off of the pitch. I didn't see any cutter movement.
