Cubs to sign Bob Howry

As the Brewers begin to rid themselves of under-performing veteran pitchers, I find it an interesting contrast that the Cubs are ready to sign 36 year old Bob Howry, he of the 6 HR allowed in 14 IP and ERA over 10 prior to his release by the D-Backs.

Will the Cubs show interest in the guys the Brewers cut loose?

Maybe its just a one day contract so he can retire as a Cub?
Quit being such a pessimist. We need all the help from Hendry we can get for the Brewers to finish ahead of the Cubs this season. This can't possibly hurt.

This thread made me check out the Cubs' stats for the first time this season. Lee & Ramirez have been brutal, Soriano has been outstanding (along with the rest of the starting OF in Byrd & Fukudome). Soto is off to a great start as well.

Carlos Marmol's ERA+ right now is 348. Their pitching as a whole has been strong. I don't see why they don't just call Samardzija back up instead of signing Howry.

I can only imagine how excited Cubs fans are to have Howry back. Wasn't he the one on the mound when a fan charged the field to yell at him?
Wow, I don't remember that one. Any details?

June 25, 2007

After Todd Helton doubled in a run with none out in the ninth off reliever Scott Eyre, Bobby Howry (4-4) was greeted by consecutive RBI singles from Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe. Tulowitzki followed with a three-run shot to put the Rockies ahead 9-8. Howry is the Cubs' closer while Ryan Dempster is unavailable because of a strained oblique muscle.

After Tulowitzki's homer, a fan jumped onto the field from the roof of the Rockies' dugout and charged at Howry. The fan was just a few feet from the mound when security guards tackled him.

"As soon as I turned around the guy clotheslined him and took him down," said Howry, who hardly moved as the fan charged his way. "He said, 'What are you doing?' I'm trying to give up home runs, what do you think?"
