5 masterpieces stolen in Paris (estimated $123M value)

The five missing paintings are said to be Dove with Green Peas by Pablo

Picasso (painted in 1912), Pastoral (1905) by Henri Matisse, Olive Tree

near Estaque by Georges Braque, Woman with a Fan by Amedeo Modigliani

and Still Life with Chandeliers by Fernand Leger.

Pretty incredible burglary. I hope the pieces can be recovered.

The Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, located in the east wing

of the Palais de Tokyo building, is separate from the bigger and

better-known national collection of modern art at the Pompidou Centre.

So, I never understood thefts like this. What do they do with them? Sell them? To who?

Edit: This from Wikipedia:

Art theft is the theft of art. This is usually done for the purpose of resale or ransom; occasionally thieves are also commissioned by dedicated private collectors. Stolen art is sometimes used by criminals to secure loans.[1]

Kind of funny... part of the article says, "[t]hough there is often speculation that works have been 'stolen to order'

for dishonest collectors, experts in the field say that in reality this

is very unusual." I would have guessed so-called 'stolen-to-order' jobs would be more common. Why risk getting caught if you don't know you have a buyer?

Totally thought of The Pink Panther also. What great movies. I find it

incredible that someone is able to pull off a burglary like this in

present day.

Ah see I was thinking of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and the rest of Ocean's 11.

I am stunned by the value placed on pieces of art.

They're surely valuable and important--but $123 million? That's huge!

Four years at Harvard is around $200K. This artwork could pay for nearly 2500 people.
