From Brewers Notes:

Second baseman Rickie Weeks needs a day off. Hitting coach Dale Sveum offered that opinion to Macha during an early morning chat.

With Weeks mired in his second slump of the season, Macha agreed, even though Weeks had started every game and wanted to continue that streak. But because Weeks was 4-for-6 against Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey, Macha left him in the lineup.

"I didn't want to (sit Weeks) today," said Macha. "Rickie can get a day (off) but it's not going to be today."

Of course he's starting him again today. Maybe in his old age, he forgot that Weeks could use a day off.

With lefities going the next two days, he probably waits until Minnesota for a day off. The way he's scuffling, he'll be lucky to be above the Mendoza line by then. The guy is coming back from a significant injury, the same one he struggled mightily to recover from last time. For gosh sakes Macha take it easy on the guy!

Calm down guys, Weeks is 1 for 1 with a 3B and a BB against Burress. He's obviously gonna have a good game tonight. /blue font

This season has been a carbon copy of the 07 campaign for Weeks. Same amount of hr's and rbi's. Came off the same injury, but got out to a good start in April. Started lunging at the ball and is now mired in a terrible slump.

I have now officially joined the Ken Macha is an idiot club. Braun has been horrible all year with a runner on 3d less than 2 out. So why would you give up an out to set up that situation instead of taking 3 cracks with a RISP against a guy who all he's done all day is give up a double, has a near 5 ERA etc.

I think Macha was setting Braun up in a situation where he has been failing and in a sense took the bat out of his hands as well as Escobar's. It's like he hasn't been watching the games. And even if you ignore that and just look at the stats the bunt takes you from a greater than even chance of scoring (112%) to less than even (94%). And it's in the 1st inning!

The bunt was fine, Macha's luck isn't. No matter what he decides to do, it ends badly.

Sacrifice bunting in the 1st inning is not "fine."

I think you missed the sarcasm in his post...

Macha has made his own karma by bad decisions in the past. Most of the recent shortcomings haven't directly been his fault, but many of them are exacerbated by things he did previously (e.g. using Todd Coffey, Hawkins or Villanueva down 5 runs late just to save a guy's ego from giving up runs instead of letting him finish the game to save arms).

If Macha is going to sac bunt in the first, maybe he should just bat the pitcher second. Giving away an out there makes no sense, statistically.

As for Weeks, every player is going to go in many hitting slumps over a full season. Is there some other reason why people think it's obvious he needs a day off?

Well, he's in his second slump of the season already and he missed a ton of time last year with the same wrist injury that got him demoted to the minors in 2007.

I wonder if Cain gets called up when Gerut leaves to be with his wife? I guess they still have Stern, but the bench would be awfully short for a game or 2.

Weeks played some poor defense on the recent homestand and has started every game this year. For a guy who played only 35 games last year they may want to consider giving him a day off. Macha's treatment of Weeks stands out especially considering how much Macha has talked about wanting to baby Escobar and Gomez as "young players" with limited starting experience. You'd think a player who is coming off basically a lost season would get the same type of treatment. For comparison Escobar has already had 7 days off, pinch hitting in 2 of those and appearing in the on deck circle in another.
